Death records for more than 11,600 veterinarians filed between 1979 and 2015 showed that almost 400 veterinarians died by suicide during this time period. Consistent with general population trends, more male than female veterinarians died by suicide (326 versus 72) during the study. From 2000 to 2015, roughly 10% of deaths among female veterinarians could be attributed to suicide.

This does reduce the cost for that service/product, but at the expense of the earnings for that job going somewhere else as well.
So, when an American engineering job moves to India, yes you save on the cost of the job (presuming it is done well, a big if), but that American engineer still has to make a living for himself.
Mostly what has happened in practice is that this has allowed corporations to stop training people for jobs here in the US, and forced many Americans into lower paying jobs or on fake "disability claims".
Is it worth it from the perspective of the United States as a whole? Probably not.

American cities are a weird amalgam of high paying jobs, the rich, nightlife and....the very, very poor.
A better way to handle government charity would be to move free/low cost housing out to areas where there is low skill work available - farms, factories, etc. Hell, you could strike a deal with some businesses for low cost labor to pay for the government "freebies".

Oh, we used to go to the Mad Hatter in Underground. $3 to get in on Penny Beer Night. And beers were...wait for it...one cent. I lost a bunch of chromosomes in that place because I ran out of brain cells.

Back in the olden days, Cash was King. You could go to a dealership and use actual cash to buy a car at, get this, way below the sticker price or the goofy price on the windshield of a used car.
Not today.
Nobody wants to "deal" anymore. (Private sellers are a different story, this is about new/used dealers). Dealers ask stupid money for their used cars and they don't budge.
When I was looking around for a used car last year, I could not understand why no one wanted to budge from their high asking price. Then I figured it out. The dealer will eventually sell that car, and at their asking price. Why? Because someone will come along and finance it, the worse credit the better because that buyer will just be happy to be approved.
The buyer (lendee) won't complain about the price of the car or the interest rate. People today are buying cars (and houses, again) with $0 money down.
Yes, just about anyone can get an auto loan. The buyer is happy to have wheels; the dealer is happy to get full asking price; and the lender is happy to have another guppy on the hook for 84 months @ 10% for a used car.

Some dealers will deal. It does take some effort to make it happen though. And you have to be willing to travel for a deal. Last new car I bought was 600 miles away. I flew out and drove the car home. Saved about $4K compared to what local dealers were willing to do. Well worth the $200 flight, $75 in gas and a few hours behind the wheel.

True story:
Last April 2018 I looked at a car at a used dealer near me. It was a 2007 Lexus RX350 with 85K miles. Very nice shape. Windshield said $12,000. This was on a Saturday (a big day for used car lots), and I was the only person at this lot. I thought it was closed, but the owner was there inside the dark building.
I haven't bought a car, I shit you not, since 2003.
So I stupidly figured this guy would jump on $11K.
Nope. Not.Even.A.Counter.Offer.
Because he knew a buyer would come along soon and pay $12K with financing.

When the AR was being designed, the mil specified that the round remain transonic to 500 yards. Thus, the .222 which was the first choice, was not quite hot enough. They could have (and in my opinion, should have , chambered it for the .222 magnum, which actually has ~5% greater case capacity than the .223/5.56.
The only thing I can figure is that the ammo manufacturers saw a lucrative market for a new proprietary round to be supplied to the mil.
At any rate, the question here is what constitutes 'effective', as even a .22 rimfire is still effective to at least 400 yards, based on penetration tests.

And for the love of God, don't ever trade a car to a dealer. Sell it privately and you'll save a fuckton of money. But that takes a little effort and so few people do it since it's easier to just roll it into the loan over 96 months.

We were travelling through north Kansas down a lonely US highway a couple years ago, and stopped at a small cemetery on the edge of a tiny farm town to stretch. There was an information board there, and a story about some of the folks buried there. Aside from retired veterans from both sides of the Civil War buried there, there was information about a number of families who were killed by Indians. Essentially, the husband was out in the field, and got murdered. Then they went to the house and set fire to it to burn the mother and children inside.
If I recall, the info said it was the last Indian attack in Kansas.
In one situation the mother begged and pleaded to spare her child, and amazingly, he was.
Bottom line, it was a killed or be killed situation for these pioneers.

I figured it was something like Saxon losing its case endings due to mixing with old Norse which was very similar, but had differing case endings, causing code confusion that was resolved by using pronouns and helper verbs. But I realize I know little of Roman declension and next to nothing of Gallic.

2. Buy your own tread depth gauge at an auto supply store. They are cheap.
3. If the tires are real cheap crap tires, or expensive, sticky "high-performance" tires, they could wear that fast. All other things being equal, high traction usually does not correlate with "long lasting".

If your car has a spare, then you don't have run flats.
Run flats aren't a brand, they a type of tire that can run for 50ish miles even when they go "flat". Sounds good in theory but they last less than regular tires, are much more expensive and cars that come with them have no spare.
Sadly most cars are heading in this direction.

A lot of times nobody knows what the car costs the dealer. And no I'm not being facetious. With all the holdbacks, volume bonuses, etc, nobody really knows what a car will cost until the end of teh month or sometimes quarter. So in Jan 16th let's say, nobody at a dealer knows what the "invoice" is. They sell based on an estimate of what they think will happen but it's at best an educated guess.

I had that happen once with a set of tires. It might be that they are "winter friendly" tires made with a soft rubber compound. More traction in the snow, but they wear down like a pencil eraser.

I'm only a decade away from having spent a decade in retail automotive.
Couple things, here.
A Factory Invoice is a real thing, Federally Regulated under the Moroni Act. Fucking with that invoice is a Federal Offense, a felony.
That said, all the invoice DOES, is to stipulate the MSRP sticker price, the "Invoice" price to the dealership, and the amount "behind" invoice that the factory RETAINS until quarterly payouts, known as the "Holdback".
These are all REAL numbers, but there are factors that can render them "fluid".
Factory Sales Bonuses can be paid out to dealers based on the number of units sold in a given time period.
Dealer might get a $200 bonus per unit if they sell 50 of 'em, and then it'll step-up to a $350 bonus of they sell 80 of 'em, and then up to $500 bonus if they sell 100 of 'em. That's back to Unit One of the period, by the way.
This is called a "Stair-Step" incentive, and the dealer will literally take one HELL of a loss on that 100th unit, just to make the bonus.
Those were low numbers, just for example. Ford Truck Month, those Stair Step numbers can get into low four figures per unit, easily.
But if the dealer gambles, and sells only 97 units? He's dorked in the squeekhole, bigly.
Likewise, there are Factory Incentives which the customers never see, no matter how good their Edmunds-fu might be. "Dealer Cash" is one, and certain financing incentives are another.
As to the trade? In Texas, the trade value is more than the quote itself. Texas' tax on motor vehicle sales, and you don't pay tax on the amount traded in. That's at a 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax rate.
So, for example, your $10,000 trade truck, will actually lower your out the door net by $10,625.
But yeah, the appraiser IS going to try to hold at least $500 on your trade, and that's if it's beater.
If you see a $10,000 figure on the appraisal with a "check mark" behind it, they're holding $500.
If it's a plus sign, it's $1,000. And those "codes" will vary by dealership, but those are common ones.
Most honest guy in the process is usually the salesman. He's usually more on your side, in desperation to make a deal, ANY deal. So he can eat.
Sales Manager and F&I team are the ones putting the butthurt on you though.
And they don't care as much as the salesman if you walk out. There's ten other guys out there bringing them more deals, always.
But to that salesman, he just canceled his Valentines dinner with his wife. Each sale matters that much, to him or her.

I have a LOT of shelving. All my LPs are stored, sleeved, and vertical. Snug, but not tight. No large gaps for LPs to lean in.

Space is a major limiting factor for most people, fortunately I have a lot of that here.
I usually keep my large racks no higher than 5 -6 14" shelves in a built in unit and 4 when on casters.
As far as maximizing space, the only real way to do it is to cull the herd.

1 - 2 13 1/2" Shelves in a stand alone cabinet with hairpin style legs.
Good for 150-200 single LPs.
I have them peppered throughout the house.
Also a couple turntable/amp stands with 1 storage shelf that will hold about 75 LPs or so.

Thor's Man Cave is roughly 1000 sq ft, and pretty much all the walls are taken up by that sort of thing, only he won't go over 4 shelves. I am used to 7 ft bookcases and don't see why he can't go higher and now I am gonna tell him he can,albeit it not as high as I thought.
He's got a fuck-ton of lesser albums in our barn conversion ( his studio), but he's not as picky about those.

And look, we're not talking anything overly valuable here, he's picked a lot up from thrift stores. We like all kinds of music and it's also just fun to try completely random shit for a buck.
We have compiled one helluva Classical collection, and they are always in pristine condition. But not brand new, like never listened to, just well cared for. Big Band stuff is also usually in pretty good shape.

I've never been to Jordan but I have been to Cairo. If you're on one side of the Giza pyramids you just look down the valley and there's all of Cairo and millions of people. If you ride out in the desert on a horse or a camel and come back to the pyramids you don't see any sign of civilization, just desert and pyramids. It's a 5,000 year old sight.

I'm not sure if a finding of fault was made. But, regardless, the car's collision-avoidance software failed to prevent her being hit. And the freakazoid behind the wheel, had it been paying attention to its job as a "safety driver" could have hit the brakes or steered around her. It's pretty much bullshit about not affordable housing. Average price of a new house is about $250,000 last time I checked. A couple with a combined income of about $60,000 a year should be able to swing that. Twenty-five percent of income for housing is a long established benchmark.
But, but, but... add in property and school taxes, insurance, electric, heating and cooling, and it starts to become unaffordable to many. Builders can't do a damned thing about those costs.

The last time I saw the old house I lived in before I left CA was selling for around $600,000. This house was built in the early 60s and sold for $30,000 then when it was new. It was about 1200 sf and located on a tiny lot just big enough for the house and a lawn chair in the back yard.

All home prices are set by location-location-location. That has always been true. When I bought my house in this neighborhood in 1981 for $50,000 I could have got a house of twice the size, but a smaller lot in the city limits for $40,000 with an "assumed loan" at 8% instead of the 16% I got with 6 penalty points up front.
But it was inside the city and nobody wants to live inside the city for various reasons, most having to do with taxes.

They shoot the M1 Garand at National matches at 1,000 yards which is about 900 meters. And that is about the max range that people can shoot at without extremely expensive and specialized gear like Snipes have.
You simply can't do that with the AR-15. I have heard of guys shooting the AR-15 at 500-600 yards and getting somewhat decent groups but for the standard AR platform ~500 yards is it.

Yeah, some audit recently showed (to no one's surprise) that CA has hundreds of thousands of ineligible recipients on its Medicaid rolls. (Gee, wonder who they could be?) But AFAIK nothing has been done about it, and the feds (meaning the rest of us) keep sending the checks.

Exactly. So instead of purging the ineligible from the roll and possibly charging them with criminal fraud or minimally demand civil restitution, these feckless politicians demand "everyone should be on medicaid - including you (but continue to pay as if you were receiving royal treatment)".
