That part is a little odd actually.
Unless Finns tend to keep significant savings, being unemployed is not tenable for long for most people.
It would be interesting to see how many of the people stayed on the whole two year pilot.
Of course if they used corporate types, being unemployed for 2 years would be problematic at the end of the program when interviewing...
By the way the E560/month they were giving them is pretty low compared to the average salary in Finland of E3500/month.

Several years ago, the office I worked for prosecuted a case about jail phone calls. One reason jail phone calls are expensive is that they must be monitored but must also not be monitored when a prisoner is talking to his attorney. This requires a sophisticated phone system.
One local attorney was notorious for beginning each legal consultation asking about his client's sexual encounters. (I must have missed that day of law school.) When he was paired with an inmate notorious for his apetites, well, it was too good for bored guards to miss. A female captain and others gamed the system to listen in. First mistake. They were well rewarded and could not resist teasing the prisoner about his escapades. Now, he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer but even he knew that they shouldn't know that. Long story short, captain convicted and went to jail. She had no intention of violating his attorney/client privilege; it was all for shits and grins.

I remember a half lifetime ago when comedian hypnotist Tom DeLuca performed as part of his act a demonstration of using words to trigger behavior.
Early in the show one of the guys he hypnotized, he instructed "When I say the word 'Chicago' I want you to come up to the stage, grab the microphone and relay an urgent message from space aliens to the crowd". To another he said "When I say the word 'Blue' I want you to come up and translate." He then dismissed them and continued on with the show. For another half hour he went about his show using neither of those words, then in the midst of giving instructions to a third set of people he hypnotized he quickly said "when you are in Chicago.." and instantly the first guy came up and excitedly rambled glossolalia that sounded more authentic than a Pentecostal Prayer Meeting. This went on for about a minute when Tom was trying to talk to the messenger and let quietly slip out the word "blue" in the middle of a sentence.
Up came the translator. It was some of the best improvisational comedy ever - and I personally knew both of these guys who swore that they didn't prepare this ahead of time, and after he "deprogrammed" them they didn't seem to remember what happened at all.
This was part of a demonstration of a technique where a hypnotist, when working with a client over several visits can have the client quickly return to a hypnotic state.

We lost our 17 year old calico last summer. She was my favorite. We still have our old lady, gray and white tabby born under a sheet of plywood leaning against a barn 20 years ago this April. Our "baby", a black Persian mix, is going on 14.
A lot of people don't get cats. And I have known plenty of cats in other houses who fit the description of aloof, mean and cold. But not our kittehs. They're lovey-dovey and are a balm for our souls.
I love dogs. But I love them enough to know I do not have the temperament to care for dogs properly. Cats and I have a mutual agreement which works for both parties, and works well.

I doubt I'd have ever gotten as far as sleeping with them; I made my (very conservative) husband wait a very long time, because I wanted to be sure.

I was reading earlier today online, some people who don't believe the wall will ever be built.
But not because they think Trump's a moron, racism, etc etc etc. They were talking about the fact that if it's built, in Texas alone, a lot of land would end up "effectively" Mexico's, because of the Rio Grande.
The argument was made: let's say the contractors are right there at the big river in El Paso, about to start building. Where will they start? They can't start on the *opposite* side of the river, because that's Mexico. And they most likely can't build in the middle of the river, without it costing tons more money, logistics issues, again etc.
So, the wall can ONLY be built on our side of the Rio Grande... thus, "effectively," ceding the entire river and all the land that happens to find itself on the other side of the wall, to Mexico. A loss of at least thousands of square miles., supposedly. So we'd be paying THEM for the wall, I guess, instead of them paying us.
I'm not saying this is a valid reason to give up on the wall, but I think it's an eye-opening consideration. Just sayin'.

A lot of times, whoever is responsible for the decision of taking that case to court is just there because they think THEIR boss will fire them if they don't. Meaning that when it gets down to actual court time, they put up a half assed attempt and just go through the motions. Because, unless it's a private business and it's coming out of their pocket, nobody actually cares whether or not you get paid. The President has already said that the river areas would NOT work for a wall, but some other physical boundary (that works in a river) would be more appropriate.
So, it sounds like what you're hearing makes sense, but TPTB have already worked out how to NOT give Mexico our territory. I wouldn't worry about that. It's solvable.

Have you actually tried one of those? One of the quirks of tracked vehicles operating as tractors is that the harder they pull, the less you can steer. It's kind of like putting a sea anchor out behind a sailboat; the drag of the sea anchor tends to keep the axis of the boat in line with the drag. I once tried to pull a 6X6 truck with my M29 Weasel, on wet, muddy turf. The Weasel just sat and tore up turf, and bobbed around on the tow line like a plumb bob hanging on a string. Could not steer at all.
I think you might find the Snow Dog tiring to operate, in that it will take a lot of muscle to steer it.

I've heard the notion that if you give everybody the same amount of money that within a year the money would have shifted so that there are some with a lot of money and some with very little or none.
But here's a thought experiment. At the end of every game period, say one year, gather up all the money again and allocate it in equal shares again. What would happen to the entrepreneurial mindset if no matter how clever you were or how productive, or how useful to your fellow citizens, the money level got reset.

The thing that makes me raise my eyes about that one is that the entire 800+ mile Texas-Mexico border is in a river.
And there is no such thing as a boundary that works "in" a river like that, it can't be done. That idea is like a lot of the stuff in AOC's green scheme - pure fantasy. (soft sand bottoms, for one thing - nothing can be anchored in that river)

Bad deal - land on the US side actually has things like working sewage systems, available water and power hookups, at least some level of police protection. Nothing on the Mexican side has any of that. You take a mile on the Mexican side - unless you put a full time Army outpost on it, that becomes Cartel land instantly. With a free shot at the US because it would be inside the wall.
Some realism here is justified here - in many places, any wall is going to have to be up to 60 or 70 miles inland from the border - the geography dictates it. People are gonna say it's been ceded to Mexico, and that's just something we're going to have to live with.
You cannot do a wall on the actual physical border, not in Texas. It won't work.

We can't build a barrier on a fucking river because its fucking impossible, from an engineering standpoint. The lower Rio Grande, like all rivers flowing into the gulf, has a soft mud and sand bottom that goes down for hundreds of feet, and soft banks.
Also, in the Big Bend are, construction in those steep canyons is also physically impossible, you have to come inland a good 80 miles at least before you can build a wall.

Well, as I said above, the closeness of supply is only one factor.
You need customers at the other end who want to buy something you produce to make it economic.
Less ideal (but often easier to arrange) is a triangle trade, where sell widgets from Astan to Bstan, wodgets from Bstan to CStan, and thingumajigs from Cstan to Astan, or possibly even more stages.
Also you have to keep in mind that these were sailing ships. They couldn't just go anywhere they wanted (at least not without being verrrrrrrry slow). They needed to follow the patterns of the tradewinds.

If the water depth at a shipping berth is 25 ft., you'd be likely to see 15 ft. of bulkhead above the waterline, the fifteen foot deep water to the muddy bottom, and the remaining 60 ft. of panel driven into the seabed by way of a crane lifted pile-driver.
But, those same panels could be driven deep into the bed of the Rio Grande, leaving a similar 15 foot height above the nominal annual average water level.
Granted, a marine bulkhead has multiple "tie-back" rods going way the hell back into the full that gets built up behind and on the land side of the bulkhead. We'd have to figure a way to add stability to a mid-river bulkhead system.
The barrier would be effectively higher in drought months, and you just wouldn't have to worry about it during winter floods. The water would be far too swift to even contemplate any kind of vessel making it's way out to the barrier.
Bonus. The environmentalists would have every kind of shit fit known, and invent some new ones in the bargain.
Expensive? Yeah.
But worth it.

Simple solution: make the mile of land between the wall and the river completely uninhabitable. International treaties prohibit the construction of barriers on either side within one mile of the river (this is so the Mexicans cannot build a bunch of diversions to push the river north), the treaties, IIRC, don't say anything about 'landscaping' the area between the wall and the river so long as it doesn't affect it's course.
It's an imperfect solution, but it will deter people from having anchor babies in the area.

So how does that system work when someone is between jobs and wants unemployment? Then distinguish that from the single mother who has two children - eventually those kids grow up and don't need the WIC equivalent.
There are reasons behind each program. The USDA hands out food stamps while HUD deals with housing and each of those are priced according to market and other factors (such as family size). And will the check also include education and job training allowances for the mentally retarded or physically disabled?
Different needs, different programs because different amounts.
You want to save huge money? For several months/years set up a local pay center where every person who is receiving any entitlement must show up in person with their grocery and utility bills, rent and possibly medical or school receipts.
This ought to weed out the dead, illegals, cartoon characters, pets, imprisoned, duplicates, able bodied, etc.
Hundreds of billions to be saved.

OK, you are on to something.
Subsidize Mexican citizens, encouraging them to purchase border property in Mexico and lease it to the US for 99 years. Build the wall on that property and pay them a lease provided they maintain it to contractual standards.
That eliminates the whole Eminent Domain and billions and years spent legally obtaining the land, the issue of invading and seizing Mexican land, and Mexican real-estate must be significantly cheaper than similar land north of the political border.

A wall, they physically have to destroy enough of it to render the wall ineffective - there are optics to that.

In a perfect world we'd have a wall and enforcement and 100,000 border agents and drones and everything else. But in the world we live in, there are finite funds. And what I'm saying is, all else being equal serous enforcement at the employer level would do more good than a wall.
But you're right the enforcement could end with a signature from President Kamala while the wall (in theory) would not be blown up by her.

As for policy issues, birthright citizenship is an outrage and a problem, but the spurting arterial wound is asylum law and the Flores consent decree on detention.
Those two - not affected in the least by border barriers, which nonetheless remain essential (duh) for many reasons - are currently pouring 10s of thousands of illegals into the country (quasi-"legally").
Neither, apparently, were even discussed by the conference committee on border security. I have been unable to find out if the WH has made them part of any request to the Hill, for a long time.
I just wonder what Stephen Miller (top Trump immigration adviser) must think about all this. He and BP/ICE know things are actually cascading out of control, getting much worse.

County lock-up is a scandal in a lot of places, and it's not just "technology companies". There are states where county jail is a revenue center - if you get arrested the county charges you for food and lodging, charges you for any medications and/or medical care, charges you for supplies like toothpaste, charges you for prison clothing, and also add a nebulous "processing fee" for booking your ass.
And these are all technically "fees" and not "fines", so even the DA declines to charge you with a crime you still have to pay. There are places where people are getting arrested because they couldn't pay the fees for the last time they were arrested even though they were never charged with a crime.

I always wonder why some people need to always be in attack mode. I'm not your enemy dude. I am however a realist who lives in the real world. Ain't no wall getting built. And enforcement at employer/local govt. level is not an alternative - ALL of the obvious things should be done.
The "Trump effect" on illegal crossings of all kinds, which one can see in the graphs put together by the Center for Immigration Studies, was dramatic. And short-lived.
But a spectacular example of leverage. Just the *expectation* of serious enforcement and the end to various scams (asylum, etc) produced a collapse in intending illegal entrants.
The leverage of border barriers and enforcement, and internal enforcement, would be tremendous, and have effects more dramatic than Trump's body language on business, taxes, and regulation had on the economy and capital markets - before he even had the time to implement any actual changes.

I am not so sure about that. Texas Hispanics have historically been more conservative than those from say CA and NYC. And our issue is that EVERYONE is more liberal, more leftist and anti American than they were in the past. If the schools start teaching civics and a sense of patriotism, we could turn this thing around. Maybe the leftists will go too far and people will snap out of it? I am not saying it is likely, just that there is a chance.

It has very little to do with background. Hell, the most dedicated leftists have been here a long time. That looks like a General Electric "Monitor Top" fridge. I think it was one of the earliest models to have a hermetically-sealed compressor unit. The refrigerant in that unit might be sulfur dioxide gas. I took apart an old fridge at a dump one time, and let loose the SO2 refrigerant. I had to un-ass the area very, very quickly.
If the motor hums, but does not run, "glitching" it by switching power on and off rapidly might jolt the compressor free. You could also try laying the machine over on its back, or upside down, and powering it up until it starts to run. But don't leave it that way for long if it starts to run.

Its difficult to tell, but how much of the leftist increase is due to demographics or due to the natural socialist bent of large cities?
The bigger the urban center, the further towards communism the people go. I think it has more to do with specialization. A person can do quite well as a specialist in a particular trade or profession and be utterly worthless in any other endeavor. Thus they are highly dependent on a gallery of other people to do the things that rural people would naturally take up (like house and auto repair). Many people are not even capable or willing to care for their own lawns or housekeeping and depend on others to do it for them. Many can't even cook and depend on restaurants or boxed 80% meals meals delivered daily .

That's a function of wealth more than anything else. More people in urban areas can afford to pay someone else to do the cleaning, cooking, auto repair etc. I'm guilty (if thats the right word). I have a cleaning service and subscribe to a food delivery service as well. I don't know how to fix cars and I wouldn't even attempt to fix my house. I once called an electrician who came over, I told him my issue, he went to one of the outlets pressed that reset button and charged me $65. But at least I leaned a valuable lesson
I however cut my own grass. I like doing it.

Actually, beefing up the border between Mexico and Guatemala might make the most sense. We don't get many illegals from Mexico anymore - the Mexican TFR is down to 2.2 now. The current crop of illegals is coming from further south, and the Mexico-Guatemala border would be a lot easier to fortify.

A relative of mine who works at a tech company just bought a tract home from 1913 for right around a million dollars.
It makes a whole lot more sense for her to work a few extra hours at the office for faster promotions/bigger bonuses and pay someone else to clean the bathroom, to cook, and to mow the lawn. Seriously, the difference in her bonus pays for all that stuff plus a whole lot more.
The problem is if you do that for enough years you're so specialized you can't do anything but the thing you do at the office. If your industry contracts, or you become somehow disabled, or you age out (this happens a lot in tech), you're completely adrift.

The issue is that the company that opens an account on my name (without sufficient reason to assume it's me) is not held liable. I AM!!! It's MY FAULT that some asshole credit card company opens an account for some thief in my name - not the company and not the thief - not really, since the only one who has to really suffer is ME.

It is a good idea for sure. Mexico has always been used to cross illegally. Hell, when foreigners wanted to enter the CSA during the Civil War, they often landed in Northern Mexico and crossed the border. That is how Arthur Freemantle "the Brit from the movie Gettysburg" got into the US and bypassed the blockade. Anyway,that was a tangent. I agree Mexico could stiffen its border. They used to have strong immigration laws that made illegal immigration a crime. Now in the caravan era, I guess that is no longer the case. As long as the people are just passing through.

When I was a young lad, I shot a stray that someone had dumped by our farm. Unfortunately, I had only killed small animals (think rabbits and birds) before that and used 20 gauge birdshot in a single shot shotgun.
It's been over 40 years, but I can still see the dog's fur on its chest dimple with the impact of the shot (I aimed center of mass). That was nowhere near enough to kill the animal but more than enough to make it suffer greatly while I reloaded the shotgun with shaking hands. The next shot was to the head while it was rolling around on the ground, howling in agony. I didn't want to torture the animal; I just wanted it to be dead.
I rather doubt someone used a "high powered rifle" to put 6 shots in a dog, unless the order was "in the back" (not dead), "in the back" (now dead), "in-each-leg-to-teach-the-fucking-owner-a-lesson".

I don't even know where to go with this stuff. None of it makes a lick of sense. And the last thing you should do is take my advice or consider my understanding to be the way it is. I am not sure three guys know anymore what is and what is not a tobacco product.
Taking them at their word, they are after e-cigs because the teens are into it. They said it was an "epidemic" When I hear that I think of that monkey movie "Outbreak". What I don't get is how a product can be a "tobacco product" when it does not contain tobacco leaf. I don't understand why e-cigs or nicotine pouches (fake dip) are "tobacco products" while nicotine gum and the patch is not. Maybe they are all considered to be tobacco products at this point? I think that is not the case, what it seems to me is that if a big pharma company markets a nicotine product, it is helpful medicine. And if a regular company markets a nicotine product, it is a tobacco product, even without the tobacco.
Again, none of this makes sense to a normal. Either way, both political parties and the big tobacco companies gave the FDA total control over this stuff in 2009. I just read about a guy who makes high end pipes, the FDA interviewed him at his place of business for over 5 hours.

There's allegedly 4,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke, allegedly (again) 400 chemicals in marijuana smoke.
Vaping 'juice' contains 2 chemicals plus some level of optional nicotine. It could perhaps contain a few more chemicals if people are purchasing flavored juice.
The 'juice' is a common thing at concerts and Broadway style shows where an eerie appearance of smoke is desired. I have a musician relative who used to bitch about the stuff because he claimed it got all over his instruments and was slippery.
But it was fine and dandy for government agencies to permit its usage in a crowd of hundreds and possible tens of thousands of people present. No health warnings posted.
Suddenly, it's the worst thing ever.

The anti tobacco zealots have a history of attacking any type of harm reduction. They say all forms of tobacco and now I guess even non tobacco nicotine products are all equally dangerous. They are basically saying, you stop everything or you mine as well be smoking camel unfiltered. They say cigs, a cigar, a pipe, dip, snus, or chew are all the same, the exact same risk. And now I guess they are throwing vape in their as well.
The science says what they are saying is a lie. I want to be more compassionate here, but the science says it is a lie. And why lie to people if they can reduce their risk? Sure giving up nicotine in any form is a good idea and it is stupid to start using it. But i thought the swamp types were pro science, you know, the bureaucrat lobbyist types.
