It's Valentine's Day. We are all wondering where they are.

Posted by: JackStraw at February 14, 2019 09:31 AM (/tuJf)

22 On this day in 1797, the British fleet under Sir John Jervis met and defeated the Spanish off Cape St Vincent. Best remembered for "Nelson's patented boarding bridge" - taking one Spanish ship, then boarding another one alongside her.

23 Almost looks like it's from the American West, except you wouldn't have the ruin and what I guess are two cedar trees.

I like it, it's very evocative. I wonder what the people are doing there. It doesn't look like they're farming.

Maybe it's just where they hole up between raids on trade caravans.

35 Many times ruins can symbolize sadness at a once-great but now-lost civilization. Not here, not to me. Here I get the sense of age and consistency. This is a place that feels lost in time. Where the troubles and progresses of the world on the other side of the mountains don't matter here. The one figure on the porch leans against the pole in a care-free attitude. The horse dozes. Another grazes quietly on the hill. A small curl of smoke rises out of the chimney. This is how it's always been and this is how it will always be.

I really want to go here.

107 I like the way the stonework in the buildings echoes the mountains and how the subtle colors of rock and growth blend. There is a sense of sturdiness and longevity about the buildings while the ruin and beaten paths provide a clue as to how long the area has been occupied. I find it to be attractive and evocative.

Yes, I would have it on my wall.

Part of a movie idea of mine:

In a world where spontaneous musical numbers are merely a fact of life, there are people who've never been at the center of one.

Our main character is one, and he goes to a Non-Musicals Anonymous meeting. Forced to speak, he talks about the closest he's gotten to the center.

It was at his divorce. He signed the papers, silence. His wife took up the pen, and musical notes begin to sound. As she signs, she breaks out into song, and he has to act as support to her through the entire thing.

136 I just read the draft agreement for DHS. What a piece of crap. I don't think the president has a choice but to take what he can and sign it. But if you read the details Democrats have stuffed all kinds of goodies for illegal aliens. There is over $200 million for illegal alien healthcare, food, etc. That's more money than they allocated to many aspects of law enforcement. They have over $20 million stuffed in their for infant formula, food and childcare. There's more- but I just, can't.

I mean, WTF. They stuff hundreds of millions each year to care for people but won't build a barrier that stops this crap? Meanwhile our citizens in needy areas like our inner cities don't get that kind of money. Unreal.

Nah. The way feds allocate monies for these projects is pretty water tight. Newsome can sue and even protest. But in the end the Feds always win on this. They've been wise to some of the corrupt practices for a long time that divert money for other uses and therefore these monies are very tightly coupled with terms. Like I said, there could be a court case, but that just delays the inevitable.

The contract is not written as an "all or none" if you build part of it. It takes a total project perspective and allocates monies on specific conditions and terms. He can't just say well- we built part of what we said, so we get the whole Magilla. The Feds will say you built 1/100 of what you contracted for so here's 1/100 of the monies allocated according to terms. There are also usually terms that have punitive clauses like- if you don't build the total project according to terms, goodbye to any federal monies. This isn't a linear argument.

Yeah I don't envision a time when I take a train from NY to LA. But for something like LA to SF or Dallas to Houston, Atlanta to Charlotte, etc, why not?

People do drive in Europe. And they fly and they take trains. It doesn't have to be an either or. The more options the better. Those goat size streets are in the old parts of cities, where tourists go. But Euro city suburbs streets are no less wide than American cities where most people own cars.

When I lived in NYC I took Acela to Boston several times and it was great. Way less hassle than flying or driving.

Maybe at 3am you can. During normal hours....not so much. It once took me 6 hours to get from Midtown to Boston. It was the last time I attempted that insanity.

Door to door including a can on both ends from the train station was about 4.5 hours with Acela. I think top speed was 150 MPH, but it was a while ago so maybe I am mis-remembering.

Me and my ex had given up years ago. I think the last straw was having reservations at a really nice Chinese restaurant I'd been going to all my life. We not only had to wait forever to get a table in spite of reservations, but were handed a photocopy of the "special" menu of the day. No, we're not doing anything from the regular menu. One from Column A, 2 from column B.

And there does seem to be a little bit of virtue signaling in general about VD when we all say (I did it too. " I don't go out on VD. I show my love all the rest of the year" or "I'm not like those phonies." People should do what they want on VD. It's their money.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation said Wednesday the company has a history of supporting anti-gay causes and that Rodney Bullard, a Chick-fil-A vice president and academy graduate, shouldn't speak at the school's upcoming leadership conference.
