On this day in 1797, the British fleet under Sir John Jervis met and defeated the Spanish off Cape St Vincent. Best remembered for "Nelson's patented boarding bridge" - taking one Spanish ship, then boarding another one alongside her.

Many times ruins can symbolize sadness at a once-great but now-lost civilization. Not here, not to me. Here I get the sense of age and consistency. This is a place that feels lost in time. Where the troubles and progresses of the world on the other side of the mountains don't matter here. The one figure on the porch leans against the pole in a care-free attitude. The horse dozes. Another grazes quietly on the hill. A small curl of smoke rises out of the chimney. This is how it's always been and this is how it will always be.
I really want to go here. Posted by: Kris at February 14, 2019 09:35 AM (OyyDO) 36

I just read the draft agreement for DHS. What a piece of crap. I don't think the president has a choice but to take what he can and sign it. But if you read the details Democrats have stuffed all kinds of goodies for illegal aliens. There is over $200 million for illegal alien healthcare, food, etc. That's more money than they allocated to many aspects of law enforcement. They have over $20 million stuffed in their for infant formula, food and childcare. There's more- but I just, can't.
I mean, WTF. They stuff hundreds of millions each year to care for people but won't build a barrier that stops this crap? Meanwhile our citizens in needy areas like our inner cities don't get that kind of money. Unreal. Could the GOP finally get their heads out of their asses? "CA is still building part of the choo choo train from Bakersfield to
Fresno. So Newsom will say the $3.5B was spent on that portion of the train and no need to give it back. " The contract is not written as an "all or none" if you build part of it. It takes a total project perspective and allocates monies on specific conditions and terms. He can't just say well- we built part of what we said, so we get the whole Magilla. The Feds will say you built 1/100 of what you contracted for so here's 1/100 of the monies allocated according to terms. There are also usually terms that have punitive clauses like- if you don't build the total project according to terms, goodbye to any federal monies. This isn't a linear argument. Ah, yes. "But that wasn't REAL socialism." Ever notice that advocates of every other form of government can point to good and bad examples? You don't have to be a Red Sox fan to see that Boston is a lovely town. It's very walkable and doesn't have that overwhelming scale that NYC has, where it wears you out just trying to take it all in. On the other hand, if you are also a sports fan, you may note that the football Patriots are world champions (again) as are the baseball Red Sox (again). The way I see it, trains work well for close by urban to urban travel. Downtown to downtown within a few hundred miles. That sweet spot where flying doesn't really make sense since it takes longer to get to the airport and go through security than the flight itself.
The problem isn't train travel. It's the bureaucracy that takes a $10B project and turns it into a $100B project. Posted by: Lurking Lurker at February 14, 2019 10:25 AM (Zq9Pe) 300

I think it's fine to have a first date on VD. I'm assuming that he wanted it to be special. BitterClinger sounds like a smart guy with a lot of insight into people and the ability to listen, In that case he can make a joke about it and get things out in the open, "I guess sit could be kind of awkward to have a date on VD because it's fraught with expectations and emotions, but I just hoped for a nice and fun time and wanted to get to know you better.
And there does seem to be a little bit of virtue signaling in general about VD when we all say (I did it too. " I don't go out on VD. I show my love all the rest of the year" or "I'm not like those phonies." People should do what they want on VD. It's their money. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 14, 2019 10:40 AM (AllCR) 383
