Moving beyond Judeo-Christianity [KT]
The stereotyped hatreds were battled by the melting-pot forces of assimilation, integration and intermarriage. Civil rights legislation and broad education programs gradually convinced the country to judge all Americans on the content of their characters rather than the color of their skins or their religious beliefs. And over the last half-century, the effort to end institutional bias against African-Americans largely succeeded. But recently, other ancient prejudices have been insidiously returning. . .Prominent among these are prejudices against Jews and against serious Christians, particularly Catholics (at the moment).
Progressive senators such as Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), and Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) have attacked judicial nominees on grounds that they are Catholic, apparently because the Catholic Church and its affiliates officially disprove of abortion and gay marriage. Feinstein complained that one appeals court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, was a dubious choice because "the dogma lives loudly within you." Hirono claimed that judicial nominee Brian Buescher was suspect because the Knights of Columbus held "extreme positions." Harris whined that the public-service Catholic organization was an "all-male society comprised primarily of Catholic men." Recently, a number of newly elected congressional representatives--Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib--have voiced virulent anti-Israel bias that came off as anti-Semitic. Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) compared Jewish settlers on the West Bank to "termites." CNN pundit Marc Lamont Hill (who has since been fired) parroted the Hamas eliminationist slogan "Palestine from the river to the sea," which is code for the destruction of the Jewish state.This made me think of a quote from 1978, a little over 40 years ago. I ran across it on Facebook. It's from an official in the LDS church, the late Neal A. Maxwell:

Let us cite but one of these ironies which is yet in its subtle stages: we shall see in our time a maximum if indirect effort made to establish irreligion as the state religion. I expect they wouldn't want to hear much about the charitable work of Mark Tapscott's Baptist group, either. Note on the Green New Deal The resolution may have seemed insane, and it may have been filled with typos, but I think Neo is right. It appealed to the activist base which appreciates the "spirit" of the resolution, allowing Democratic presidential candidates to connect with them.
Isn't it very very extreme, so extreme it will alienate people? For the answer, just do what I did: spend a few hours reading MSM sites and seeing reactions from Democrats. It's an education in how the GND is being responded to, and why the Democratic candidates have all hopped aboard the extremist green social justice jobs for everyone train. Last night I watched a clip of some liberal spokesperson or other being quizzed by a conservative as to what she agreed with in the details of the GND. "Its spirit" was all she could come up with, but for her it was enough. She seemed embarrassed when asked about particulars and couldn't endorse any, but she pooh-poohed--almost ridiculed--the need for details.Isn't that "spirit" stuff sort of religious language? The resolution moved the Overton Window. And it will make future Democratic proposals seem reasonable. Neo will be writing more. What do you think?

Elder Neal A. Maxwell was an apostle in the LDS Church, and a *very* smart man. Every single talk he gave (and he gave at least two a year while serving as an apostle) was filled with wisdom. Unfortunately, those same talks also tend to not be easy reading. But they're usually worth the trouble.

The GND is ultimately a fundraising gimmick to set AOC up as a power broker. She's branding herself as the only one truly serious about climate change to attract the donors. All the folks who are true believers, and all those cynically virtue signaling and those exploiting it for gain.
She wants to be the next Pelosi, the one controlling the spigot of campaign cash picking and choosing who gets it. Ensuring she gets more far left socialists in that owe her.
Of course the GND is ridiculous and impossible to deliver. This means she never has to deliver, and allows her to do a progressive 'failure theater'. Telling the base that they just don't have enough folks in office yet, but more donations and getting more progressives in and they'll get it passed, promise, cross their hearts.
Yeah, AOC eventually wants to be Maduro with her and her cronies accumulating the wealth and power while the rest of us starve. But don't think for a minute they were ever serious about this monstrosity GND getting real traction. It's about attracting the dollars and building power.

I don't think at a practical level the Green New Deal (not to mention the Democratic Goal of Legalized Infanticide)-
are jokes at all.
Look, at the history of the Democrat Party.
No matter how absurd the proposal, no matter how long ago it was proposed, no matter how damaging to the people, customs, government, Constitution, economy, military, morality of the Untied States of America.
They will continue to push it in it's original form until they have the political power to enact that proposal.
And they will make it law.
So, yes, unless fought tooth and nail, at some point in the near future, we will get "The New Green Deal" to destroy our economy and society.

Taxes on meat to offset the environmental impact of cow farts. Look at what happened with cigarettes. Today the vast majority of the cost of a pack of cigarettes is taxes, not the actual cost of the product. So beef costing $100/ lb. will not bother the ruling elites at all, but it will be unaffordable to the proles.
Requiring that older homes be retrofitted for energy efficiency. Homeowners will be forced to pay for expensive retrofitting, or pay higher property taxes. That will force people out of private single-family homes and into Soviet-style apartments. Only the rich and the connected will be able to afford single-family homes.

Speaking of enviroidiots. There have been articles with our cold weather talking about elec. vehicles and their performance in the cold. A loss of 40-50% was seen in our last cold snap. Gee, you mean cold is hard on batteries? Thanks sherlock! One guy interviewed said his range was down to 60 miles on a charge. LOL. One of the articles recommendations was to pre heat the car while at the charging stations or keep it in aa heated garage. Yea, that's some earth friendly stuff there.

Part of the problem of (or explanation for) the rise of these ancient prejudices is the almost total failure of individuals anymore to exercise their basic self-respect and to challenge these prejudices with righteous outrage. I've got nothing against bad art, but I am firmly opposed to bad PUBLIC art.
The folks who choose public art and make taxpayers fund it, always seem to have very bad taste. The crap they plant in my city appeals to nobody but the people who write and cash the checks. It's like The Emperors Clothes: the boosters say it's magnificent, even though there's nothing there.
We have an OK park-district plant conservatory in town. Year by year, the govt operators add more and more hideous artjunk in among an expensively maintained plant collection. Why? Are people bored with looking just at the plants? And the "art" looks better somehow?
Glad we're spending hundreds of dollars a day maintaining the correct temp and humidity for a collection of glass statues.

But if Orwell HAD read it, he might have grasped that "democratic socialism" is actually a contradiction in terms and that maintaining the outward forms of "democracy" will not prevent the inexorable slide into totalitarianism.
In any case, there is no doubt in my mind that Orwell would see the echoes of 1984 in the "democratic" Left today.

I cannot fathom where that defeatist attitude came from originally. It's possible that somebody misinterpreted Jesus' exhortation to "turn the other cheek" and that we were supposed to just take any and all forms of abuse in order to be considered Good Christians.

I do not believe that our rulers want to eliminate the middle class and I think they want it to be prosperous, at least up to a point.
But they want the prosperity and security to be entirely dependent on THEM.
They don't want a bunch of small farmers and businessmen. They don't want corporations that aren't under the thumb of the State or party-controlled unions.
Ideally, we should all work for government directly.
If not, we should work for corporations allied with government.

We've had similar pushes here in the US. I can't remember the details, but in at least one case a government office insisted on getting a list of stuff mentioned in a church as part of an application process for a (socially conservative, of course) process that an individual (who I can't recall off the top of my head) was going through.

So while it read like a high school girl's science project, the basis is something real, that many people in the world claim to believe, even if they don't know what it says.

I wish I could have a garden, we live surrounded by woods, I can hardly grow grass it's so shady. Our soil is sandy and acidic due to all the oak trees. So I will avoid the garden thread because nothing here will be green for 3 more months.

If you believe in Milankovitch cycles, which I do, the planet is slowly tilting to provide more solar radiation to the southern hemisphere in their summer at the expense of the northern hemisphere in our winter. It will continue this gradual tilt for another 10,000 years before reversing.
Our winters will become nastier, theirs will be setting records for heat. On balance, it should be interesting. But it wouldn't surprise me to gain North Pole ice and lose some South Pole ice.

The bottom line is this: a society must have a shared, coherent system of faith and ethics to continue to exist as a culture. Without this agreed upon system of behavior, it will crumble, splinter, and disappear.
That doesn't have to be Christian or Jewish. It can be Islam or Buddhism or Communism, but it has to be agreed on, shared, and consistent.
The problem is that the left has torn down everything that came before, and offers nothing to replace it. Its like ripping the skeleton out of a man and then expecting him to stand. They pretend that they have a replacement system, but it changes so often, so radically, and so irrationally that nobody can keep up or try to follow it, let alone agree to it.

They pretty much finished up around noon. Good activity, not a lot of tear gas, few if any bang grenades -- I think the police are taking some heat for using them -- as another guy had his hand blown apart lobbing one back last week. I saw the video, the hand was unrecognizable.
They torched a Porsche, which was kinda interesting watching the firemen put out. It looked like a stadium sized crowd at one point. You didn't miss much.

Jussie Smollett is in the hot seat after there have been several reports that the openly gay actor may have possibly filed a false report to police. If that's the case, the Chicago Police Department promises to charge Smollett for making a false police report in regards to the alleged hate crime perpetrated against him on January 29th.
The investigation is still ongoing, but with the Empire actor refusing to hand his phone over to authorities, the 36-year old actor will have a hard time proving his case and avoiding jail time as his alleged assailants have managed to do.
In the meantime, Chicago PD Superintendent Eddie Johnson vehemently states on social media that if Smollett is found to not be telling the truth he will be charged.

I'm very skeptical about the whole "Overton window" thing, though. Especially in cases like this. I think it's generally a misreading of the problem. The problem is not that people get habituated to dumber, more pernicious, more repugnant stuff, little by little. It's that they don't think, don't think critically, and/or don't even have a base of reasonable values to start.
That's pretty academic for a gray Saturday busy with house cleaning and reloading, but there it is.
People in CA, for example, actually don't understand and accept the self-imposed idiotic costs and restrictions they live under. They *don't understand* how basic things work. No Overton windows shifting - just laziness, ignorance, inability/disinclination to think.
Rejection of the rent control initiative last November was, I think, the only intelligent electoral outcome in the entire state (might have been local ones I missed). Not sure if that showed any vestigial, fleeting ability for voters to think (vs. emote, or chant the mindless idiocies of the age, esp. on "environmental" issues).

Oh, she's a bimbo. But the thing to remember about IQ scores is that there is the time factor involved. You don't achieve a high IQ score by taking four years to figure out the obvious, what others figure out in seconds. People who take four hours to answer the questions on the test don't score anything like the people who turn the test in in 20 minutes.
Unfortunately there are too many in this country that will require four years of pain and suffering before they figure out the obvious.
That is an indictment of the so-called 'education system' of this country.
