81 I don't know the story of Truth coming from the well but the painting is interesting. I assume the two guys are trying to put truth back in the well so they, and mankind, don't have to face what they have done.

The figures are both realistic and romanticized. The background is darker and emphasizes the figures and the foreground. I like the retreating perspective of the buildings in the rear. It's an effective work to study for technique. Boobies notwithstanding, I wouldn't put it on my wall. Too preachy for my taste.

107 BTW, if you've wondered about this winter's extra helping of cold, fear no more - it's warming up.

No, seriously. The latest trial balloon is "higher high low temps"...

The warm spell in the Houston area last week had most days 5 to 10 degrees below record highs for a given day.
However, the LOW for several days was a near or record high LOW temp, so WARMENING!!!

Now with daily high temps some 20 degrees below normal (yeah, that's cold), the temps are "around normal" because.... wait for it... the low temps are only one or two degrees below the "average low".

111 Well since the Truth must come out, let me give you this:

The Long Black Robe:

(The true untold story of the man who witnessed the passing of Notorious RBG)

Ten weeks ago
On a cold dark knight
A justice went down
And gave up the fight

Just a few at the scene
But they all said, "Forsooth"
The judge who died
looked a lot like Ruth

Well the Justice said son
How'd you know I'd died
When I still cast my vote
It was obvious you'd lied

But I said not a word
Though it meant I paid
And she stayed on the Court
To save Roe vee Wade

Well the end is nigh
And eternity nears
But she stands in the crowd
And says, "Hold my beer"

And sometimes at night
When the cold wind moans
In a long Black Robe
She cries all over my bones

She walks these hills
In a long black robe
She visits my grave
When the night wind blows

Nobody knows. Nobody sees!
Nobody knows but meeeee!

162 Sorry I'm late. Reading some of the above comments, a lot seem to be on the right track. I had to look up the meaning of the title, cuz I don't speak heathen.

"Truth Coming Out of the Well". She is the allegorical representation of Truth. She is topless and barefoot, clothed in a toga-like peplos. The mirror has many meanings, but here is means fact because a mirror never lies in its reflection. The two men are trying to stop her and even put her back in the cold, dark, forgotten depths of the well. The guy in the mask is probably deceit. His face is hidden, he doesn't want to be recognized. The other guy is hard to identify. He looks like a cavalier, so someone who's cavalier with the facts?. I don't know if the French has the same dual meanings as the Queen's language. Also notice that the two figures assaulting Truth are men, the opposite of women -- the opposite of Truth? The eternal clash of fact and fiction?

The water is spilt. Water is life. In the struggle to suppress truth, life is being wasted?

If this is related to the Dryfuss Affair, then it seems particularly damning that the men are dressed as chevaliers. French knights not being particularly chivalrous with the Lady, perhaps.

257 There is a good article in The Hill this morning about Democrats wanting to end the filibuster in the Senate IF they take back the senate and the presidency in 2020. This should scare the shit out of everyone who isn't already horrified by the Democrats agenda.

Not only do they believe very strongly they will win the presidency, no matter who wins, but they also believe they will own the senate and ergo all three branches. The plan is to then turn those majorities into a rubber stamp for all of their destructive, anti-democratic, socialist policies by ramming everything through without objection.

If you are not already working to ensure your local party members get out to vote, and supporting Republican candidates, you should be. The future depends on it.

Dirty little secret:

This is why symbolism and allegory are very interesting topics. In a work like this, even though the date pins it to the Dreyfuss Affair, the symbols are eternal and universal, they can be used in any era and still retain their meanings. Truth is beautiful and always fighting to be released and it is always suppressed by deceit and lies. It is as true today as it was 120 years ago.

484 An allegorical painting by Edouard Debat-Ponsan. His painting is a derivation of the story of the Truth and the Lie. Instead of Truth emerging from the well armed with a whip (to whip the Lie for stealing her clothes), Debat-Ponsan has the Truth carrying a mirror. The two gents (Designated Liars, of course) represent the Aristocracy-Army and the Catholic Church (the behatted character is wearing the garb of a Cure`). Debat-Ponsan was an ardent Dreyfusard and he donated this painting to Zola.

I don't drink much, I don't really crave alcohol, but I can drink a lot when I do. I had friends that were just mean violent drunks. Get some drinks in them and they were ready to head butt the cigarette machine in the bar. Nah. Look, Democrats were previously correct to hide their real intentions. That's how they won the midterms along with the Trump! Resist! hyperbole.
People are not going to vote in large numbers for the crap they are talking about. It's too easy to defeat those arguments with pure, lucid facts and material arguments.
The people buying this shit, as far as I can tell, are already Democrat Party members. That is, ignorant people who are immune to actual facts and substance. They are not going to pull in Independents and the middle of the country they need to win elections for this garbage. Don't mistake hype and the media's idiotic ruminations for something meaningful. In the end, people vote for their own self interest.
That said, we need to educate people and get out there with the counter argument. As usual, Romney's Niece and the people at the RNC are sucking their thumbs and missing an opportunity.
For a really good perspective, read Kimberly Strassel's OpEd in today's WSJ.
