The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“These kids got a lesson in social media mobs and the mob that forms in social media forms quickly, and it is there to bully anybody from saying what they really think and what they believe, particularly if it’s a conservative viewpoint.” Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY)

Quote II

But at the same time, don’t let those traits, or any other, drift to the extremes. You will fail as a leader, as a man and as a person. Instead, balance the dichotomies that pull you toward one extreme or another.

And pass that balance on to your sons – and your daughters as well. These so-called “masculine traits” aren’t just for men. Jocko Willink

Quote III

“If he truly cared about Dreamers, if he truly cared about undocumented youth, he would not be using us as bargaining chips through his tantrum of getting a wall that makes no sense.

It’s like lighting your house on fire and then going outside and trying to put it out yourself by blaming it on other people” Belen Sisa

Feds Prepare To Bail Out "Vast Majority" Of 90,000 Sears Pensions

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp (PBGC) said in a Friday press release that it believes Sears Holdings Corp's "continuation of the plans is no longer possible" following the Company's October bankruptcy, after it was revealed in a Friday filing that Chairman Eddie Lampert's $5.2 billion rescue package does not include pension plans.

2019, a bad year for the internet?

On the first day of the new year, the Democratic Republic of Congo cut internet connections and SMS services nationwide—for the second day in a row. The reason? To avoid the “chaos” that might result from its presidential election results. Not even a week later, on January 7, Gabon’s government did the same after an attempted coup. And it’s unlikely that these will be the last “internet blackouts” we hear about over the coming months. (Both incidents, ironically, took place after I outlined this piece.)

In fact, we’ll likely see a rise in internet blackouts in 2019, for two reasons: countries deliberately “turning off” the internet within their borders, and hackers disrupting segments of the internet with distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Above all, both will force policymakers everywhere to reckon with the fact that the internet itself is increasingly becoming centralized—and therefore increasingly vulnerable to manipulation, making everyone less safe.

Leave it to California to kill the goose that could have laid the golden egg.

Deep in Gov. Gavin Newsom's new budget is a figure that says a lot about California's shaky legal marijuana market: The state is expecting a lot less cash from cannabis taxes.

The Democrat's proposed spending plan, released Thursday, projects the state will bank $355 million in marijuana excise taxes by the end of June. That's roughly half of what was once expected after broad legal sales kicked off last year.

Industry experts say the diminished tax income reflects a somber reality: Most consumers are continuing to purchase pot in the illegal marketplace, where they avoid taxes that can near 50 percent in some communities.

January 22,2017, English bass guitar player Pete Overend Watts and founding member of the 1970s rock band, Mott the Hoople died from throat cancer aged 69. Watts helped start the Buddies with guitarist Mick Ralphs, a band that evolved into Mott the Hoople after periods in which it was known as the Doc Thomas Group, the Shakedown Sound, then Silence. They became Mott the Hoople after Ian Hunter joined in 1969. Watts continued with Dale Griffin, Morgan Fisher and Ray Major in the Mott successor British Lions. He later became a record producer, producing albums for artists including Hanoi Rocks and Dumb Blondes. via thisdaymusic.com

Math, how does it work?

New York City restaurants, feeling the pinch of trying to make ends meet, are slashing their staff after a state law that took effect at the end of 2018 is mandating restaurants with 11 or more workers to pay a $15 an hour minimum wage.
The legal minimum wage in New York City rose from $13 to $15 on December 31, 2018, giving workers a temporary hourly raise while forcing employers to cut those employees’ hours to make ends meet.

The wage hike is the city’s third since December 31, 2016, when the city’s minimum wage rose to $11 an hour.

You shouldn't mess around with other peoples meals. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day and Genius Award Winner wrapped into one story.

Police say a fatal shooting at an Alabama IHOP began when a customer started shooting at employees and a wounded restaurant worker shot and killed the customer in self-defense.

The Huntsville Police Department on Thursday identified the two people killed in the Wednesday night shooting as IHOP employee Roy Brown and customer Roderick Turner. Brown was 56. Turner was 25.

In a statement, police said Turner was picking up a carryout order and became “disruptive and loud regarding the service at the business.”

Not everyone who works in Hollywood is dirty slime. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

No, Gary Sinise didn’t get to be Time’s “Person of the Year,” despite a viral push. However, for those of you keeping track, he’s still busy demonstrating why he should have been.

According to Fox News, the actor — best known for playing Lt. Dan Taylor in “Forrest Gump” and for his work with veterans groups — raised $1.3 million for his Gary Sinise Foundation by helping auction off a custom Jeep that actually managed to sell twice.

70 The legal minimum wage in New York City rose from $13 to $15 on December
31, 2018, giving workers a temporary hourly raise while forcing
employers to cut those employees' hours to make ends meet.

And minimum wage workers REMAIN at the bottom, while more people get shoved back to the bottom who were just above minimum wage.
And the cost of living goes up because of the increase in labor costs, and the more dollars those jobs are incremented in are worth less.
Nothing changes but the rising number of 'working poor.'

Posted by: Mr. Peebles at January 22, 2019 10:11 PM (qD8gk)

71 Think $15/hour in NYC is crazy. The idiot Denver/Boulder liberals passed a referendum in 2016 to raise the minimum wage STATEWIDE. Small business in a struggling little town in eastern Colorado with a much lower cost of living will also have to pay the higher wages to make the liberals feel virtuous.

Oh but 'tipped wages' will not be as high. So I guess the Starbucks in Boulder can pay less, but if its a McD's franchise in Brush they'll get to pay the full $11.10 this year and $12/hour starting in 2020 with annual COL increases.

81 I happened to be lurking on Reddit during the worst of this, and I saw someone with the handle u/glowingapplesauce trying to dox that kid by linking to a tweet by one encyclopediaproblematica. I thought it it would kind of nice if I could draw a little attention to that.

Now, I'm not even on twitter, just facebook. But facebook has had hashtags for awhile now, no one uses them, but I think they're kind of fun. Anyway, I've been making a lot of posts with #Whoisglowingapplesauce and #Whoisencyclopediaproblematica on them.

I was wondering if anyone here who's on twitter or anything else like that might like to help break these hashtags out of the facebook ghetto? I could send you some screenshots.

82 Gary Senise has played benefit concerts - Rockin' for the Troops - near me at Cantigny Park -

https://cantigny.org/
It's the former estate of Colonel Robert McCormick (who ran the Chicago Tribune).. he was with the 1st Division in WWI, and there is a First Division Museum on the grounds.. a beautiful place with flower gardens in season.
Senise is OK in my book!

88 When you raise the min wage from $13 to $15, the guy making $15 will demand $17. And the guy making $17 will demand $19 and the guy making $19 will demand $21....and so on up the food chain. Which means prices will increase across the board in order for that $2 increase throughout the labor pool.

And what will very shortly happen is the purchasing power of $15 will be what $13 used to be.

And then the fight for $20 will begin, rinse, repeat forever.

90 I suppose this is judging folks by their looks but I was suspicious of Nathan when I saw his broken teeth.

If he doesn't care enough about his teeth when he can so easily get them fixed on the Governments dime (as an 'elder' he'd be sure to know how to scheme that).

He's probably trying for that authentic Poor Indian from the Res look. But they're usually poor because of alcoholism something that Nathan has had documented problems with.

His claim of service sounded fairly bogus too.

And yet the scene had all the elements the Fake News needed and wanted: clean, white teenage boys goofing around wearing MAGA hats, a group of anti white Black nut jobs to provide cover and incidental racial behavior that would freeze any white person let alone a kid. It was made for what happened.

And it's quite possible it WAS made up by a few folks directing the action on the side who then slipped away.

What is the craziest thing you remember from your time as a drill sergeant/instructor?

Dennis Petrinic, former Airborne Combat Medic, Drill Sgt, Private Pilot (1972-1985)
Answered 31m ago

The craziest thing I remembered as a Drill Sgt was breaking the bad street habit of urban youths constantly grabbing their privates. I had one in my formation grabbing for his crotch which I noticed at the corner of my eye. I asked him if he lost something in his pants, with a stupid grin he said no Drill Sgt. I told him I didn't believe him. I asked him who his battle buddy was, which I already knew the answer.

Another crotch grabber from the hood. I ordered his battle buddy to put on his winter gloves, which he did. Both trainees and the rest of the platoon not knowing what I'm about to do.

I ordered his battle buddy to reach inside the front of his buddy's trousers and help his buddy find what he lost. They were both shocked and begging me not to make him proceed with this search. I then turned my attention to the rest of the platoon who were trying their very best not to laugh and ordered everyone to put on their winter gloves. You should have seen the look on the crotch grabbing recruit, his smart ass hood grin turned into the look of panic.

I advised him if I ever caught him or any other recruit grabbing their crotch, I'd have the entire platoon put on their gloves for a search party in the offenders trousers.

This was sort of like housebreaking a pet nearly every new cycle. LOL

156 While it's true that Bowie was a Mott the Hoople fan and wrote and produced "All the Young Dudes" for them, they did put out great music before and after that. Their 1973 album Mott is a classic. Even after Mick Ralphs left to form Bad Company. Bowie's guitarist Mick Ronson.

I saw Hunter and Ronson several times in the early '80's and they were always a good show.

163 I did the Vietnam years part while in college, draft-deferred because student, and immediately after, in industrial construction. My employer among other interests, had the huge maintenance contract at the Fed's Oak Ridge TN atomic facility.

All us engineers got covered by critical skills deferments, whether at the nuke works or not. Me, I was building slab reheating furnaces at the hot ends of strip mills in Gary and at Indiana Harbor next to East Chicago.

It wasn't like America the day after Pearl Harbor or the day after 9/11. No one wanted to go to Nam and get nailed by Charlie.

Strange story about Phillips. Didn't know you could end up a Marine, being drafted.

My arrival out at the first furnace job, a short ride from the Chicago city line, was a month before the Democratic National Convention. Daley's cops made the street scenes pretty entertaining.

Mick Ronson played with Bob Dylan during his 1975-76 Rolling Thunder tour.

I don't know what he looks like, so I can't say for sure that he was playing on this particular song, but it was in the right time frame.

198 The New York Restaurant story reminds me, why aren't Leftists snapping up restaurants in places like New York? Just imagine all the improvements they could make.
1. Use only renewable energy, no fossil fuels.
2. Buy all their food from farms within five miles of the restaurant.
3. Make certain they only make a few dollars more an hour than their bus-persons.
4. Provide full medical to all employees, including maternity and family leave.
5. Include all the employees in all decision making.
6. Charge only what the customer is able to pay.

And with all the profits that would pour into such a restaurant, they could purchase other businesses and fix them as well.
In fact, since everything would be so much better for everyone, one could say NOT buying a restaurant and correcting all the errors is an immoral act.

++++

I know there's many things to criticize that t-shirt over: the crudeness of the slogan, the age of the child wearing it, the disrespect to the fairer sex, etc. But, I want to focus on something else. "Who needs tits with an ass like this". Displayed across her chest (and belly). Is she talking about her rear end, all the way in back of her? You can't even see it when you read her shirt. Or is she calling herself an ass? It is just a lame slogan to display on her front.

The illogic of it is what offends me.

204 CA's problem with their pot tax is it is too high, at 50%. That makes the illegal market the better deal. CO must be taking a smaller piece of the pie.

NJ's casinos are dying out because of the state grab, and of course the unions. In MS, the state bite is fairly mild and no unions and no cap on # of licenses, so casinos continue to be built here on the coast. The delta Tunica casino count has continued to shrink, as they overbuilt there.

It's almost as if there is some invisible hand out there.

207 Hey everyone!

I used some of the suggestions for changes to the Moronopoly concept board, and made a 1st draft of the game. Except for the tokens, because I'm still researching the best deal for them. I think I'm close on that.

The PDF linked below contains drafts for the main box, the smaller box (for money, tokens, and cards), the board, the draw cards, the money, and the deeds.

A couple notes: as always, please don't send any of this to print, it's a draft.

It works exactly like Monopoly, except I included an optional "Death Card." You'll know which one.

Also, since most of the properties are threads I settled on "Comments" and "Socks" for houses and hotels.

I'll bookmark this thread - feel free to leave suggestions/bitter, blistering criticisms.

Also, if you look at this and find anything that's an outright error, or something you think really needs to change, please comment the PDF and return it to the email in my nic.

That makes it easier for me, and I'm lazy.

236 208 198 The New York Restaurant story reminds me, why aren't Leftists snapping up restaurants in places like New York?

People on the left have been telling us for years how businesses should be run. I say stop talking about it and start doing it!

274 One of my first forays into the then new World Wide Web took me to a webpage by a long retired Chicago PD guy. I was probably web searching something about Viet Nam. Anyway it was interesting, as it was completely different than what I was told happened.

The idea was to provoke the cops into doing something. The "antiwar" folks threw shit and bags of urine in the cops and ran up the North Vietnamese flag in Grant Park. The news organizations didn't show any of that, but when the cops started dispensing hickory shampoos then the klieg lights came on.

But it's a tried and true method. Provoke someone to the point where they break, and then claim victimhood. We're seeing the same type of methods deployed today. It really is intolerable. I regret wishing that something will break, because the drip drip drip of commie bullshit is intolerable. It is illustrative to see how useless so many people and institutions have become.

They should have made licensing simple and easy, and not imposed any sales taxes right away. Let the businesses start operating and work out the bugs. Before long the illegal operations would go out of business.

Then when the legal market was established they could start increasing regulations and imposing taxes.

But here in Moonbeamland it's all about regulations and taxes and sanctuary cities.

The sad duties are sad, but in the short term, mostly done.

Took her cremation clothes to the funeral home today. Her favorite things to wear. Wouldn't make the grade for the snobs, but then, she wasn't a snob.

The fridge/freeze was an EPA Superfund Site.

But for the labors of Dodie's friend and volunteer caretaker... it'd be a landfill special.

Now though, it's surgically clean, odor free and ready to resume work in service to a new owner, a few weeks hence.

Bathroom brought to a similar state of surgical readiness, by the same steadfast young lady.

I'll have to come back here in March, for the heavy lifting of emptying the house and making it ready for sale. Two weeks, at the least.

The yard sale on that one ought to be visible from space.

Good news though?

I'm +1 pistol now, found in my late Dad's (passed in '09) ammo locker. Bolt cutters to do the work that the "bucket of keys" heretofore could not.

Unfired Ruger 22/45.

Last gun the Old Man ever bought. Knew it was there, found the receipt in his effects after he'd passed.

But Step Mom never wanted the lock and bolt cutters to meet.

I introduced them tonight, and thus was the happy outcome revealed.

Certainly, I owe both Dad n' Step Mom a debt of thanks for that new gun!

Without appreciation since 1973.

With appreciation, since 1980.

With affection, since 1988.

With love, since 1999.

It was a long, difficult and arduous climb. A lot of those milestones she HAD to EARN, as she came in as an intruding outsider.

My resentments were not without merit.

But she EARNED the "promotions" and was provably devoted to my dad, even through heart attacks, surgeries, procedures, sickness and death.

She PROVED her worth, and EARNED my respect.

And in time, my love.

Which she offered without reservation from day one, as Step Mom's tend to do.

So, I was a fool, but I was also a hurt, stubborn and resentful kid.

Growing up doesn't happen all at once, for some of us, does it.

Do you know her story? It's a long and disagreeable tale. She's a "refugee" from Somalia who married her brother for some nefarious purpose -- to fraudulently obtain citizenship, it seems -- and has gone about since then making her way up the ranks of political power in this country while complaining ceaselessly about the oppression she suffers as a Muslim woman of color.

Because no one else in Europe at that time would have looked for another passage to India.

I know! Just kill all the Europeans!

Plus, if you killed them after they interacted with the natives, it still would have not gone well with them. Small pox and measles can go pretty bad on populations that have never been exposed to them.

500 Interesting day yesterday. Ice storm came thru right about the time my wife was to leave for a doctors appointment. She was nervous about driving in it, so, knowing the main streets still have plenty of salt on them, I volunteered to drive her. It wasn't too bad, other then trying to keep the windshield ice free.

At the docs office the local news was on. They had a segment on where they were talking with the fed employees that are running out of money.
"What will they do" was the common thread thru all of the wailing.
I thought to myself on how often the news would have on the people that were losing jobs during the prior admin, and wailing about the lack of jobs when large or medium companies closed and laid everyone off.

NO I DO NOT AGREE. The average illegal alien commits 5 to 10 crimes weekly.

I'm with you, rhennigantx. I believe this BS has been debunked many times. They are using figures for ALL immigrants, legal and illegal. And if you listen carefully when they are spouting this crap on TV, they always say, "immigrants commit fewer crimes...." They never say, "illegal immigrants commit fewer crimes..."

If only those kids had a PR SWAT team.
1. demand to see the questions in advance and bring them with you.
2. demand that your own camera film as well. or that the session is aired live or not at all.
3. Go on with a lawyer present.
4. Stick to the talking points. Admit nothing.
5. Go on the offensive. always ask "why are you asking me that." or 'what do you mean by that" until you get the real question.

627 Every illegal alien is a criminal.

I like the way the Left tried to dismiss that by saying "hey, if you exclude the illegal alien part, they are all law abiding." Kind of like Marion Berry saying "if you exclude all the murders, DC is a very safe place."

Good point. IIRC even Barry signed the new act that said something about profiting from medals or something similar, and I saw that Chief Ford Ranger had apparently been awarded some sort of Native American Valor something or another.

I do too, and said so before. The behavior is inappropriate. But what in this era isn't inappropriate. I see this crappy behavior all the time. But the thing is, acting a jerk should not equal an event that travels the world like this has. This thing is about the internet, and the lies told by Phillips and the media.

That's a bullshit lefty meme. The truth is that we don't actually know the crime rate for illegal aliens in the U.S. because lots of places (California, for one) won't allow records to show prisoners' "immigration status."

Have to go to school a long time to get that stupid. Wannabes do harm to the genuine veterans and institutions and generally put those same people and institutions in a bad light. They are imposters at best. Very damaging in many ways.

Reminds me of a documentary on life aboard an aircraft carrier. One of the new guys was complaining that after 6 months he was still swabbing out the heads. He was less then happy with joining the Navy.

I know nothing about the service, but I gotta think if you're still Permanent Head Orderly after 6 months, the service is not for you.
