Posted by: Guy Who Thinks Things Are Always BeginningIt will be red and big, and then it will disappear in a total eclipse. The total eclipse will begin at 11:41 Eastern, but the partial eclipse, in which the moon will dim and turn reddish, starts at 10:33 Eastern. This unique total lunar eclipse will begin on January 20 at 10:35 p.m. ET and end at 1:51 a.m. ET on January 21. "Viewers will see a normal full moon at first starting at around 10:35 p.m. Eastern time," said Walter Freeman, assistant teaching professor at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences' physics department. "At that time, the Earth's shadow will begin to pass in front of the moon, blocking almost all of the sun's light from reaching it. Observers will see the moon appear to be progressively 'swallowed up' starting from the lower left. This process will end at 11:40 p.m., when the Earth's shadow covers the whole of the moon's surface; this is the beginning of 'totality.' This will last until around 12:40 a.m., when the motion of the Earth's shadow will carry it past the moon, and the moon will gradually again be lit by the sun. At 1:45 a.m., the moon will be fully visible again."Note that the precise times given by sources vary. The exact times might depend on your exact position on the earth. Anyway, they all seem to agree about those general times. It will be a perfect eclipse through most of North America and South America. Here's the Farmer's Almanac about the meaning of a super moon and a blood moon: 2. What is a SupermoonThe wolf moon is just the first full moon of the new year. If you have misbehaving children, tonight is a good night to Re-Impose Your Parental Authority by taking them into the back yard and telling them you will Destroy the Moon unless they clean their Legos off the floor. Open thread. Obviously you can't talk about a coming eclipse very long, unless you're a crazy person. I'll do another post on this later, and then maybe put another one up around midnight. It's disgusting. ... the NeverTrumpers jumped on the ShameTrain and baseball crank is even now saying "They should have known they were asking for trouble, wearing MAGA hats in DC, as is their right as Americans." Or words to that effect: https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1087086518055944192 "Look at the way she was dressed, she was asking for it." Anyone think Baseball Crank would be saying "Of course she got her hijab snatched off, she should have known wearing it in public would invite hostility." They literally hate conservatives and take every opportunity they have to attack them or justify deplatformings or even actual assaults on them. But they're the Real Conservatives. They love conservatISM (allegedly), they just hate actual conservatives, and want them attacked and deplatformed and shamed or beaten out of the public square. All of this moon hysteria is pure fake news garbage. None of these terms are real "scientific" terms -- there just jazzy-sounding buzzwords recently coined to manufacture clickbait headlines. There is no such thing as a "Super Moon" or a "Blood Moon" or a "Wolf Moon." There's just an eclipse (commonplace occurrence) happening at perigee (routine standard occurrence) occurring at some random date on the meaningless western calendar (irrelevant). It is neither rare nor significant in any way.
It amazes me how everyone (mostly millennials) falls for this clickbait idiocy. Posted by: zombie at January 20, 2019 04:30 PM (c+2jX) 157

Recent discussions on free trade and mercantilism are off the mark, IMHO.
The current issue is that the US has done several things (or allowed them to happen) over the last few decades that have pushed jobs abroad, especially in manufacturing. High US corporate tax rates is but one of many examples. So the recent cut from a 35% rack rate to 20% was a Jobs Bill, you see. (Only industrials paid rack rate, you see). Classic economic theory assumes that we're each a selfish Nietzchean monad. But it's in my interest that a guy in Indiana has a job to pay into our Welfare State rather than being a meth head burden. And we've enabled China to be a global trade leech in so many ways, at the expense of our own. In theory, and even more so in practice. And no one used to talk about it. Except in elite rags to say that flyover Deplorables should just fuck off and die already. Until Trump saw his political opening. Miles of undeveloped beach front property that had been left abandoned by smart politicians. Posted by: Ignoramus at January 20, 2019 04:42 PM (1UZdv) 213
But don't worry, even though their emotional attachment is to the left, and their readership is increasingly leftwing, they will remain conservatives forever. As you know, they're very courageous and loyal people.
Posted by: ace at January 20, 2019 04:27 PM (PbpT7) I opposed Trump because I thought he was a leftist posing as a Republican. But he has been one of the most conservative presidents ever, so I'm happy. I thought the Never Trumpers' opposition was for the same reason too, but clearly not. They really have gone off the deep end and are now embracing leftist behavior, something they accused Trump and his supporters of. And they are letting their intense hatred of Trump scramble their brains. Look at this craziness from Jonah Goldberg: https://mobile.twitter.com/MZHemingway/ status/1086471036416258048 Continuation of Mollie's response: https://mobile.twitter.com/MZHemingway/ status/1086473244172013569 Is that a conservative approach? And his lackadaisical attitude towards not crediting Ace was really low. See also J Podhoretz's accusation that TWS was "murdered" by the owner. No taking of any responsibility for putting off their readers, no acknowledgement that under capitalism, failing enterprises shut down. Nope, they are entitled to others' money so they can write what they want but no one else is interested in. Trump's election has been really eye opening. A serious question:
What, if anything, do the NeverTrumpers still object to? These so-called "True Conservatives". What conservative policy prescription do they suggest that is better than what Trump is doing, is claiming to be doing, or claims he will do in the future? What facet of Trump's administration do they claim is "not conservative"? I really don't think i've seen anything from the NT's since the beginning other than: - Ad hominem horseshit - Rote repetition of confirmed leftist lies - Hollow virtue signaling - Deliberate misrepresentation of Trump's administration So it really must be true that their opposition to Trump is that he's "not one of us, you see". I understand the trepidation at first, is he a shill? Is he lying? Is he a stalking horse for the globalists? But now? Come on, people. You're in a full blown cranio-rectal inversion at this point, and it's nothing more than sour grapes and clickbait. Posted by: Warai-otoko at January 20, 2019 04:49 PM (Ct55T) 236

Serious question: If the eclipse is caused by the sun casting a shadow, why does it happen at night?
Posted by: Muldoon at January 20, 2019 04:17 PM (m45I2) I didn't see a serious answer to this (I suspect because it seems like a setup), but in order to see the earth's shadow, from the surface of the earth, you have to be in it (nighttime). Or to put it another way, note that the moon has to be full in order to be eclisped (its orbit has to put it 'behind' the earth for the sunlit side of the moon to be visible in its entirety on earth), so a full moon cannot be seen in the sky at the same time as the sun. *********************** That's interesting, my parents just replaced their toaster oven with an air fryer. They love it depending on what you cook. They just bought a whole chicken and used the air fryer to cook it today and it came out perfect. For other things like french fries it takes some trial and error to get it right, but on a whole the food they've been cooking has come out more flavorful and tastier using a fryer. 200 53 Ace posting on Sunday? His photograph above the fold on the current post of The Other McCain? Posted by: Duncanthrax at January 20, 2019 04:10 PM (DMUuz) Indeed! Posted by: Aetius451AD at January 20, 2019 04:39 PM (ycWCI) Very interesting article about Ace over at The Other McCain. It provides insight about the mysterious Ace that makes a lot of sense. The Other McCain made a statement that Ace really hides his true identity, otherwise the Leftists will harass him and ruin it. Living behind enemy lines here in Seattle, I get it. Discretion truly is the better part of valor. Perspective is a powerful tool that the right uses as often as possible, while the Left despises it because the natural next step is that people start thinking for themselves. Ace's posts are based on facts. Which is why the Left considers him an enemy. And some day, I would enjoy buying him a cold one for his efforts and perspective. Not to nitpick, but shouldn't this be called a "terrestial eclipse?" A "lunar eclipse" is when the moon blocks the earth, so the proper terminology should be used for the opposite effect.

>>> A "lunar eclipse" is when the moon blocks the earth, so the proper terminology should be used for the opposite effect.
no that's a solar eclipse -- the first word refers to the thing being eclipsed, not the thing doing the eclipsing. When the moon eclipses the sun, it's a solar eclipse, because the sun is being blocked. When the earth eclipses the moon, it's a lunar eclipse, because the moon is being blocked. The lunar eclipse itself is just a MacGuffin.
A MacGuffin is a term of art in screenwriting. It's the thing the hero wants but the bad guys are trying to get, and therefore it drives the action of the story. In John Huston's The Maltese Falcon, the Maltese Falcon is the MacGuffin. In Raiders of the Lost Ark it's the Ark. In Dude, Where's My Car? it's the car. The lunar eclipse isn't nothing, but in the context of disciplining your children, it might as well be. What really matters is the effect of the lunar eclipse on misbehaving children. Because tonight is a good night to Re-Impose Your Parental Authority by taking them into the back yard and telling them you will Destroy the Moon unless they clean their Legos off the floor. At the rate the SJWs are ruining our culture, I expect the four NFL teams that played today will be forced to change their names within 10 years. Why? see below -
Patriots: Too nationalistic and one-world-unfriendly. Chiefs: Denigrates Native Americans, and Native American women, especially. Saints: Do I need to explain why? Rams: Describes only the toxic males of an animal species; completely ignores the struggling and sacrificing females. And within 25-30 years, I expect use of any animals as team names/mascots will be right out. I cannot imagine what small set of things will be acceptable team names/mascots by mid-century.
