Chess Thread 01-19-2019

Normandy oct 1943.jpg
Normandy, October, 1943

Pic Note

Are any of you military-wise morons able to tell, perhaps from the uniform insignia, what army these guys are part of? The uniforms look sort of kraut-ish to me, but I know nothing of such things.

As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Easier Problem - White To Play (887)

Goal: Force a mate in 4
Hint: a7 is the sacrifice square

Because nothing improves your chess like pounding suds during a game.

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (883)

Goal: Mate can be forced in 8
Hint: The queen is free for the taking

This turned out to be an interesting problem. Lots of lines to play analyze.

Solutions Update

Easier Problem - White To Play:

20190119 - Problem 1.jpg
1r6/k4ppp/p1R1pn2/N7/P2r3P/5P2/5PP1/1R3K2 w - - 0 1

Straightforward from here:

1.Rc7+ Ka8
2.Ra7+ Kxa7
3.Nc6+ Ka8
4.Rxb8#

Also, 'Off the reservation' found:

1. Rc7+ Rb7
2. Rcxb7+ Ka8
3. Rb8+ Ka7
4. R1b7#

More Challenging Problem - White To Play:

20190119 - Problem 2.jpg
1k1rr1n1/ppp5/1q3b2/QP1p1pp1/1P3B2/2PBPP2/3K1P2/R6R w - - 0 1

1. Qxb6

The queen cannot be recaptured: 1...axb6 2.Ra8+ Kxa8 3.Bxc7 and now there is nothing but delaying moves to stop the mate on a1: 3...Bxc3+ 4.Kxc3 d4+ 5.exd4 Re1 6.Rxe1 f4 7.Ra1#.

1...Be5 is also futile: 2.Qxa7+ Kc8 3.Bxf5+ Re6 4.Bxe6+ Rd7 5.Qa8#

1...Re5 is probably the best reply.

2. Bxe5

2.Qxa7+ Kc8 3.Bxe5 Kd7 4.Bxf5+ Ke8 5.Bg6+ Ke7 6.Rh7+ Ke6 etc. will probably work, but doesn't look as efficient.

2...Rd6

The queen still cannot be taken: 2...axb6 3.Ra8+ Kxa8 4.Bxc7 which is the same line as was analyzed before.

Also bad is 2...Bxe5 3.Qxa7+ Kc8 4.Bxf5+ Rd7 5.Qa8#

3.Qxa7+ Kc8
4.Bxf5+ Re6
5.Qa8+

Or 5.Bxe6+ Kd8 6.Rh7 Bg7 7.Rxg7 Ne7 8.Qb8+ Nc8 9.Qxc8#

5...Kd7
6.Qxg8 Bxe5

If 6...d4 then 7.Qxe6+ Kd8 8. Ra8#

7.Qxe6+ Kd8
8.Ra8#

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

I'm a patron of his on Patreon because of his hilarious Star Wars critiques, but he also has a chess channel which I'd never looked at, and recently he posted a collection of "greatest hits" which included a spectacular meltdown when he lost an online chess match. About those Hun uniform guys:*

Central Asian Wehrmacht Heer volunteers of the Turkestan Legion play a game of chess on the Western Front. Most members of the Turkestan Legion (German: Turkistanische Legion) were Soviet Army POWs from the modern-day nation of Turkmenistan, with smaller numbers from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the Republic of China. After surrender or capture, many volunteered to fight for the Germans in the hopes of establishing an independent state in Central Asia. After the war, most soldiers of the Turkestan Legion were ultimately imprisoned by British forces and repatriated to the Soviet Union, where they would face execution, gulag camps or prison terms for treason. 25 Yeah, probably Soviet POWs-turned-feldgrau with the Wehrmacht. The most famous of that group was the Korean guy who ended up serving in 3 (4?) different armies in WWII.

Told this one before. Utah Beach, US soldiers encounter lots of non-German Wehrmacht (who mostly surrender quickly). Intel officers can't talk to them, no language connection (not just Asians, caucasians too). Finally one GI comes up to a senior officer and says "sir, just who are we fighting here, anyway?". One of my favorites.

33 A vote in Congress on DACA would be a win for Trump. It would make the issue a congressional one, and an election issue if they pass an extension. Plus, it might help Trump in court if it's shot down, by enabling his lawyers to claim that Congress had the chance to resolve the issue and didn't.

51 Yep Wehrmacht WWII. The Nazi eagle on breast is a good clue.

Properly crushed wheel cap and two bars on collar - Hauptman or Captain. The others are enlisted including two corporals judging by their shoulder boards.

The insignia on the right upper sleeve should be unit but no idea which unit.

But if it was taken on the French coast in 1943 and by the Asiatic look of the enlisted soldiers, then probably are Soviet POWs who switched sides.

After having lived in KC and been a season ticket holder (pray for us sinners, St Marty Schottenheimer) and hung on as a fan for 25 years, a few seasons ago the Chiefs started something ling 1-5.

I threw a fit and vowed never to root for them again. I was going to find a new team, a team that didn't always, always, always disappoint.

The Chiefs promptly went on a 9-0 run and made the playoffs.

Mrs Blutarski will not let me return to the fold and rightly so. But I like this Mahomes kid and his weapons.

Emigrated to the US after the Finns tried him for treason for joining the Germans to fight the Soviets. Joined the US Army and later Special Forces in the '50s, serving with them until he died in Vietnam in '65.

I'm sure you've heard about the Japanese virtual girlfriend devices (and if you haven't, I just told you). Apparently at least one company in China is making one as well. I saw a review of the Chinese version. It appeared to be similar to an Alexa or At Home device, except with a screen on one side that displayed a cartoonish animated female figure.

Much amusement was had at points when the person conducting the review was unable to get the device to understand the reviewer's native Mandarin Chinese, or when the device would appear to creatively misinterpret what the speaker was saying. And the comments for the video noted that those traits made it much more like a real girlfriend.

It was also noted that the device was likely spying on its user, which was just like having a mother in law.

He briefly describes his 24 month experience as a prisoner at Johnson's Island.

It is worth mentioning that Davis and the Confederacy repeatedly approached the north for prisoner exchanges. They would have nothing to do with it:

"If in the fortunes of war you should be captured, you must run the risk of death in a rebel prison. I will not give a Southern soldier for you,—you are not worth the exchange." Gen. Grant said: "Our men must suffer for the good of those who are contending with the terrible Lee;" and ignoring the claims[Pg 108] of humanity and the usages of honorable warfare, he lowered the question to a cold commercial level when he declared that it was "cheaper to feed rebel prisoners than to fight them."

If it didn't exist, white would win. So the key was -- how to get rid of that rook with check each move? So then the answer was easy: Rc7+ Ka8 Ra7+! KxR and now we're back at the exact same starting position, but now with the stupid unnecessary rook out of the way!!

Which means we can now mate in 2: Nc6+ Ka8 RxR mate!

After she passed away, we pondered what to do with her clothes. Some dated to the 40's. I contacted a theater group in Atlanta, and they were very pleased to have them.

I kept a pair of elbow-length white gloves. Every now and then I run across them while looking for something in the top of a closet.

I've been to Slovenia, but long ago was I was very young, back when it was still part of Yugoslavia. In those days, to be frank, it was pretty much of a shithole, especially when you crossed over from Austria, which was a clean clockwork 100%-employment wealthy western nation. All of Yugoslavia was a polluted, depressed, grim grey totalitarian garbage pit. Slovenia did have a "resort area," but we didn't go there, just went to random "real cities" instead, which was a mistake. Worst hotel I ever stayed in in my entire life was in Maribor, in Slovenia.Thought I was going to be murdered in my sleep.

Since being liberated from communism, however, Slovenia has improved a hundred-fold, or so I;ve been told.

344 Of course will have to wait and see, but don't recognize any political strategery in Trump's approach that looks promising.

DACA has been punked by the Dems once before in a very similar scenario - that hurt them sooo badly, they just took 40+ seats and the House, and avoided a bloodbath in the Senate. DACA is a lever without political leverage.

If the courts uphold Obama's lawless DACA, then in a sense it doesn't much matter what Trump or Congress does - the judicial coup will be complete, at least in immigration matters. Almost every week brings a ruling usurping executive power, ignoring statutes, outrageous grants of standing to parties who should be able to sue the USG, creating new "rights" for illegals (one in MD this last week).

Trump if anything understated the gravity of the situation. He'll likely close the border a few times, and seek help from Mexico. Of all the key elements to containing the blaze, only two were even part of Trump's proposal, and then only in fairly weak and fractional form (some barrier, more immigration judges). Not optimistic.

In Golf Company 2/7 in 29 Palms, our company T-shirts had a skull-headed soldier holding two .45s. Weapons Company had a 'Dealers of Death' T-shirt with an evil jester's head and a hand holding up 3 cards-- TOW, machine guns, 81mm mortars.

Saw a guy from a STA platoon (read: snipers) with a crouching skull-headed guy holding a sniper rifle. Motto: MORS TUA VITA MEAM, if I recall correctly.

My unit in the Army after I switched used a skull with jump wings and a dagger, etcetera, etcetera.

Yup. Chuck Cowdery's bourbon blog makes it clear that lying about the ancient roots of your brand is practically mandatory in liquor circles. It might be true some of the time, of course.

The other nearly ubiquitous not-quite-lie is when you don't distill the stuff yourself, but buy it in bulk, and then try your best, within the law, to obscure that fact.

Posted by: Splunge at January 19, 2019 07:24 PM (ed8K1)

390 Cannot remember where I read about it - maybe in Citino's book about the Wehrmacht in the east up til 1942? About how the Wehrmacht hid much of the "ostbattalionen" activity from Hitler, as he didn't approve of recruiting icky untermenschen (he was all stoked about SS volunteers from western Europe, and referred to them repeatedly in speeches).

Any Turkestani Soviets would have been POWs - the Wehrmacht did not get to Turkestan or other areas from which they had volunteers, thus they had to have been captured.

Central Asian troops mostly, I believe, remained in construction and railroad divisions of the Red Army, though they were present throughout the forces in small numbers (a member of the famous small group of soldiers who first held Pavlov's House, an epic stand in Stalingrad, was Uzbek).

422 Jap uniforms were very disappointing. About the only decent stuff was in the upper ranks, and just the Navy. Even the senior Army guys did not have impressive uniforms. One cool thing though was the tropical Army look - shirt collar outside tunic collar. But come on, Yoshi, the Brits owned the tropical military look since it was invented. No contest.

426 @358, my GGF was captured by the Union. He was a one of the only 36 civilians captured that died on Pea Patch Island prison camp (FT Delaware) in Delaware. He died in 1863. He was captured for "disloyalty". Things are sketchy about exactly why they captured and sent him to a military prison camp. He must have done something they didn't like none too much.

I imagine he would be a moron and reader of the AoSHq if he were alive today.

-----
Frederick the Great had two black-dressed hussar regiments -- the Death's Head and the Total Death regiments [Total Death had the entire skeleton with a scythe and hourglass on their mirliton caps] -- in the mid- late-18th C.

And the black-dressed Brunswick troops in exile after Napoleon occupied/dismembered the Duchy and their troops at Waterloo after the Duchy was restored had them too.

The British 17th Lancers had it with a "Or Glory" motto scroll. [Death Or Glory.] I can't recall if there were any other Brit cavalry units with it or similar.

437 Captured Soviet troops from Turkestan recruited into the Waffen SS. The right sleeve patch on the man in the center tells the story.

Posted by: Davis Wall at January 19, 2019 08:53 PM (v4K82)

438 Sleeve insignia marks them as some of tge 16,000 or so members of the Turkmenistan Legion. Most were deployed in rear-echelon areas of Yugoslavia and Italy, but a few were added to coastal defense divisions in France. If I had to guess, and on the assumption these guys really are in Normandy, I'd put them in the 243rd, 709th or 716th Static Infantry divisions. The former two each had "Ost" battalions, though nominally either Russian or Georgian, but by that time the Wehrmacht was so desperate for manpower it's no unlikely they had ad-hoc units scraped up from everywhere. Fwiw, the officer to the left looks familiar. I'm pretty sure I've seen him in other photos of Ost Legionen units. My hunch is that these guys were used in staged photos circulated in Soviet prison camps in efforts to recruit "volunteers." None of these guys fared well. If they survived the war, the allies repatriated them to the USSR, and the Soviets were not forgiving.

439 When I was in Korea I saw a movie allegedly based on a true story. A Korean athlete that had participated in the Olympics for Japan was caught up in anti-Japanese riots in Korea, arrested and pressed into the Japanese army as a laborer. He was in Manchuria in 1939 and captured by the Soviets at Kalhkin Gol. In 1942 he was pressed into the Red Army and was taken prisoner by the Germans at Stalingrad. Pressed into the Wehrmacht, he was captured by the US Army in Normandy, part of a labor battalion. He lived in America after the war.

Posted by: pincorrect at January 19, 2019 10:09 PM (3LmBI)

442 The soldiers are Ostlegionen, specifically I think from the Turkmenische Freiwillige.

Typically these soldiers were former Soviet personnel recruited into the Wehrmacht from POW camps.
They were used for any role that could free a German to do a more important task coastal defence which is why they ended up in Normandy as part of the static divisions. They were actually a fairly substantial subset of the troops facing the Allies on D-day.

Many of these Ostlegionen ended up captured and were returned to Russia to face 30 years in the Gulags.

Stalin actually had the entire Kalmyk population declared as traitors and deported to Siberia.

443 EDIT- "Notably, they were used in coastal defence"

444 They are in all likelihood Soviet Koreans from Sakhalin Island and the Maritime Republic, drafted into the Red Army and captured by the Germans.

An alternative is that they're Kalmucks, an Asian minority group in the Soviet Union who were captured in large numbers and turned. A fellow officer's father started the war in the Red Army and finished in the Heer. While the Brits returned the Cossacks to the Soviets and execution, a great many Kalmucks captured by the U.S. were allowed to settle in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

450 I could tell they were Nazi uniforms (Eagle insignia is a dead giveaway), but I couldn't figure out the collar insignia.

After a bit of research, it seems those collars with the upside-down F-shaped stripes are for Nazi Party ranks (specifically, Hauptstellenleiter, or Head Department Leader), rather than military ranks. So yes, WWII-era Nazis playing chess.
