"Soypunk Dystopia:" Is FaceBook's #10YearChallenge Meme Just A Sneaky Way to Get People to Upload Pictures of Themselves So That FaceBook Can Improve Its Facial Recognition and Aging Effects Projection Software?

"Soypunk dystopia" coined by Tim Pool.

So, if you've noticed people posting pictures of themselves in current year along with a picture of themselves from ten years ago, that's because >FaceBook told them it would be a fun, cool, hip, harmless game to do so.

But is it?

If you use social media, you've probably noticed a trend across Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter of people posting their then-and-now profile pictures, mostly from 10 years ago and this year.

Instead of joining in, I posted the following semi-sarcastic tweet:

My flippant tweet began to pick up traction. My intent wasn't to claim that the meme is inherently dangerous. But I knew the facial recognition scenario was broadly plausible and indicative of a trend that people should be aware of. It’s worth considering the depth and breadth of the personal data we share without reservations.

Of those who were critical of my thesis, many argued that the pictures were already available anyway. The most common rebuttal was: "That data is already available. Facebook's already got all the profile pictures."

Tim Pool (not the author of the piece) says his reaction to that wasn't one of relief, but of alarm: Oh shit, that's right. I've already given them all this personal shit about me without having thought about it at all.

But that's not quite true. I'm guessing that most people who do this "Ten Year Challenge" stage a new photo in which they are angled and posed exactly as they were in their photo from ten years ago, to better show Now Vs. Then.

Which is exactly what you'd want to sharpen a facial-aging-projection program. You wouldn't want to have to compare a three-quarters semi-profile with a straight-on shot. You'd want the faces to be in the same postures and in the same angles, so that the programming as a true apples to older apples database to work with.

This is creepy shit and these people are no one's friends.

5 Justice Ginsburg is not in the office today because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday.

Once again, Justice Ginsburg will be celebrating the holiday by performing for family and friends her annual one-man play depicting events in the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The performance will last for eight hours with a five-minute break at the halfway point.

Those fortunate enough to have been in the audience in past years never fail to marvel at Justice Ginsburg's amazing costume and character changes, including among others her uncanny and frankly rather disturbing portrayal of a Birmingham, Alabama police dog.

Those sitting in the front row may wish to wear a poncho.

14 The only thing is they already have all those photos to pick from and they know when you uploaded them. Why only use two photos when you can use dozens or hundreds, from different angles and lighting, and use all that data combined for a much better overall result?

Computer learning works better when you have a whole lot of different inputs providing options, rather than just a single before/after comparison. You've already contributed to this if you've been using Facebook over the years. Just one more reason to delete that shit.

Symmetry is not a big thing with the older actresses, these days - not even old, really, ... they start screwing up their faces in their mid 30s, it seems. They don't care what their final proportions are so long as no age lines can be spotted. Look like a sick fish face or some mongoloid sideshow attraction? No problem. As long as the lines in her, now rigid, forehead are hidden.

Still, I don't see that as the greatest danger of facial recognition. Years ago I got pulled over by a cop who was randomly typing license plate numbers into a computer. Years later I got pulled over by a cop who had a scanner that automatically read plates and cross checked them with the database.

I worry about the police using FR to scan public spaces and arrest people who are just walking around.

When I was undercover as a Marine Recon Ranger Raider in Cambodia I injected myself with Cong blood and buried myself for 3 days under jungle loan and elephant shit so I wouldn't smell like round eye, eating nothing but stinky fish sauce and baby foreskins so my farts would be authentic.

Then, I flew into the insertion point via monkey powered hang glider and landed on a temple spire, ready to act. I had to kill the monkey to keep him from talking in case of capture. I was able to use his guts for my radio antenna and call in air strikes from the Franco-Irish Ambulance Brigade, a front group for the Peruvian First Peoples Front.

They fvcked up the strikes and ultimately I had to do it my self, but that's another story... a story from the case files of Agent Orange...

But the best part was that, in the end, they are in the "sanctuary" of the blind people, impervious to the whatever the fvck it was ... but there are still crazy mothers out there who can see and want to kill everything in sight. The blind people really can't do anything to stop that ... and that little door on their compound isn't gong to stop much of anything. My wife says I'm paranoid but I don't care. I even put a band aid over
the camera on the computer. I leave my cell phones in 1 room when not
talking on them because I don't trust them not to be sending voice and

Due to my job I attend a few DoD oriented tech/trade shows each year. One of the most popular freebie items that gets handed out over the last few years? The little sliding laptop camera covers (with whatever company or vendor's logo printed on it; for instance, the one on my laptop was handed out by American Cyber and has their logo).

Zuck: yea so if you ever need info about anyone at harvard

Friend: what!? how'd you manage that one?

Zuck: people just submitted it

Zuck: i don't know why

When I asked Zuckerberg about the IMs that have already been published online, and that I have also obtained and confirmed, he said that he "absolutely" regretted them.

Here's the huge difference between Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, et al, and Google, Facebook, Twitter, and the like:

Apple and Microsoft and Amazon sell you things for money. If they collect information on you, it's so they can figure out what kinds of things you would buy so they can sell you those things in exchange for your money.

When Google and Facebook collect your information in exchange for a service that you don't pay for, it's because they already have a buyer on the other line offering money for their product, which is your information.

The earliest organized system for identifying known criminals and repeat offenders used tattoos and unique features as well as basic facial features to identify them in England and later New York City. This was before fingerprinting and identifying fingerprints was really understood or could be done reliably. They knew what finger prints were but they could only make use of visible, existing prints on things, not "lift" them etc.

407 When I was still working, our "district" was featured in a company-wide newsletter. Everyone went outside to pose for a photo. I *volunteered* to be the one who stayed inside to handle whatever came up. Because I did not want them having me even in a group photo.

5 years later, they wanted photos of all of us who were on the Safety Committee. I flat out refused and told them why - that I do not allow my name and a photo to be associated in any way shape or form on any internet site for privacy reasons. They could not seem to grasp the idea that their website was not secure.

1. a realistic, but fictitious name with a surname that is statistically common in a state far away from mine.

3. Access only an a throw-away virtual machine.
Hopefully, this will keep FB's prying fingers off me.

This story has really rattled me. My children attend Catholic schools - one private, one parochial (like I think Covington was? or maybe it's fully private). We sacrifice A LOT to send them there. Both schools had buses that went to the March for Life as they do every year.

When I saw the original video I didn't understand the massive negative reaction honestly! even presented that way I didn't get the vitriol.

The Touch ID biometrics Apple uses are actually treated a lot like how password are treated, with a one-way hash function. Like how you can't determine someone's actual IP address from their post hash, you can't work out a password from a properly hashed password, and you can't re-create an image of a thumbprint from a Touch ID hash.

470 "Not really. They are *always* going to want to refine and reduce error rates."

That is true, but my point was that the technology has progressed to the point where the data you would get from this particular exercise would not be all that useful.

The original version of the challenge--or, at least, the one most of my friends who participated did--was "first and current profile photo." Profile pictures are already public and already sorted by date. If they were going to use that to refine their algorithm, it's long been done. In other words, zero of my FB friends participated in a manner that was of additional value. Plus you have to weed out the joke posts, the profile photos that were of someone else or an inanimate object, the posts that were not actually taken 10 years apart (mine was not), etc.

They'd get better-quality data to work with elsewhere.
