Ah...A Bit Of Sanity To Help Put Out The Hair Fires: China Is Losing The Trade War

Japan Inc. of the 1980s was an unstoppable economic powerhouse that was going to buy up every bit of American real estate, sell us all of our cars and electronics, and then finally win the war they started in December 1941.

It didn't work out quite the way it was presented to us by an hysterical media, and today Japan is in social and demographic trouble beyond the worst projections for America.

So here is a breath of fresh air about the impending doom barrelling toward us in the shape of the Chinese Dragon.

China Is Losing The Trade War In Nearly Every Way

China is still the world's No. 2 economy and is still the monster of emerging markets, but regardless of those bonafides, Xi Jinping's country is losing the trade war in nearly every way imaginable.
As the article points out, China plays the long game, but at least for the time being, America has some qualitative advantages that are going to be hard to beat. And China has demographic issues of its own that are significant, chief among them a declining birth rate and a lopsided male:female ratio. I guess that whole "One Child" plan had some unintended consequences!

21 Ah...A Bit Of Sanity To Help Put Out The Hair Fires: China Is Losing The Trade War

China could never win a trade war. They don't trade, they just export.

The US has long had this neurotic view of itself that we needed any of these countries. No. They need us. THeir entire development has been on the backs of our markets.

We see the same shit with the illegals. There are billions of people on Earth dying to immigrate here. We are lucky enough to be in a position that we get to pick and choose who we want. But, there are so many in this country who make these ridiculous arguments that we are beggars for immigrants and, therefore, have to take the dregs who decide, on their own, to invade us. Crazy.

China should have had it most favored trading nation status yanked decades ago ... but, of course, Clinton and the dems were too busy giving China the keys to the kingdom in exchange for a few tens of thousands in buddhist temple campaign loot. The "free trade" (LOL - they really mean 'free export to America') conservatives have also been a major problem in this area. They're just crazy with the delusion of a borderless world. Assholes.

Tariffs don't work! They penalize the people in the country imposing them! There are graphs, and everything!

I actually think Trump is sincere about going for zero tariffs/other impediments. I think on these things he is a true believer.

The more interesting story may be the situation with the EU. The UK's sad "elites" are putting on a clinic on repudiating/nullifying representative government in putatively representative systems, how that turns out and the US reaction may be somewhat interesting.

40 I've been predicting China's collapse for some time. I give the current regime 10 years.

One Child blew out decades of demographics, and it's coming due. China's median age is 38 -- the US is 36.5 -- and it will now get real old real fast. Dynamic economies are often young. Taking care of the old is an economic burden.

Every 75 to 100 years China blows up with rural uprisings against the elites. This time with pollution. The water is worse than the air.

Central planning works! Until it spectacularly fails!!

44 I have a couple of Chinese nationals on my team. You should hear their stories of their home life. One room thatched and mud huts with dirt floors and no heating other than the mud "stove". Any disabled child, if they weren't abandoned to die in the woods, live with the pigs and ducks.

They both came from small villages. The folks that work in factories in the cities may even be worse off. Crammed into tenements and damn near slaves chained to their work stations.
They aren't ever going back.

51 I'm not a fan of Trade War and they have to lose for us to win. Trade is almost definitionally positive for both sides, but I'm not here to fight the free market wars today.

China for years has had (at least) two systemic problems that will render its dominance unsustainable.

A non-convertible currency and a thoroughly corrupt reporting system means that their real growth and productivity are not measurable.

More than that, econimic freedoms have made many Chinese rich. But they still have no political freedom. It is easy to oppress poor people. I don't think rich people will put up with it indefinitely.

And have an economic "safety net".

China still uses the model "eldest child takes care of the elderly parents".

So now, new-college-grad boy looks at his prospects.

In a few years, his parents will be moving in with him, and his salary will be supporting three people.

If he gets married, his wife will traditionally become a stay-at-home non-working mom. Or, stay-at-home non-working elder-care provider.

So now his salary supports six people, because his wife's parents aren't living with their eldest son, they're living with her, because one-child policy.

Then they have a kid.

Seven people. On one salary.

Marriage is now limited not to those of age, but to those whose parents have died already, or to the Chinese version of "the one percent" who can live like this.

(Based on a conversation with a work-related contact in China.)

The "free trade" crap ignored most of that with the promise China would become more free ---> world peace in our time. It was a fabricated lie from the start. Jeanne Kirkpatrick knew this about the commies ...

A razor used for shaving should never go dull, and yet they do. Ever wonder why?

Rust. That and the glide strips degrade to the point where the shave feels uncomfortable to the skin as compared to new.

But under a microscope, the blades get just a bit of rust on their cutting edge, and it becomes deformed just enough. The extreme thin-ness of the blades makes deformity for likely too.

So take your average safety razor and that cheap blade, and if you take the blade out after every shave, wipe off the residue and store it in a small container filled with alcohol where it'll never rust, it actually should last forever.

What? You think those hairs on your face are dulling the blade? Really?

When Barky slimed into office (in large part due to the oil price spike that kicked off the credit crisis) the MSM and financial centers slickly changed the "price of oil" from WTI (which had the highest at the time) to Brent crude, which immediately shaved about $20/bbl off oil when Barky slimed in. Like a miracle! And they never mentioned that they had changed the basis of "the price of oil" ... even when they pointed out historical peaks (which had been hit by the "other" oil and not the one they were currently talking about). Sneaky, sneaky ...

The 'hook' for current stories is however, that the school and mayor are 'investigating' the students.

Thus allowing the media to perpetuate the original lie.

There was no systemic weakness until they ADVERTISED the 'toxic assets'. They made people panic, which caused the economic downturn.

Note, not a single toxic asset was ever bought by the Government. They are STILL OUT THERE being traded.

It occurs to me that the Left fears right wingers, alt-right whatevers, military vets, people like that. What they really need to be worried about is that generation of kids, who are growing up and maturing and being told left and right that they're evil and scum and their religion is for braindead peasants.

I'm 37-- wait. I'm 29 plus 8, and this stuff has gotten much worse since I was in school. These kids have to be steeped in it by now.

These kids are learning valuable lessons right now. Unfortunately, the biggest one is that if these people decide to skin you, you will be skinned and a lot of the people you thought you could trust will drop you like a hot brick. They will see; they will remember this.

I just got done reading Witold Pilecki's 1945 report about setting up and running the underground network inside Auschwitz. These guys did a lot of stuff that could get them horribly executed, even for tiny things. Why do it, then? Because when the penalty for *everything* is Horrible Death, you might as well just go ahead, because fuck it, why not?

No, I'm not saying these kids are like Holocaust victims or anything. I'm saying that when guilt and innocence and facts no longer matter, you might as well do whatever you want and whatever it takes to protect yourself because, in the words of the former secretary of state, "What difference does it make?"

talking about, or what the "free trade" BS is based on. Mercantilism is
strategic trade based on what is beneficial to the nation state. Early
America traded ... America was mostly mercantilist till when??? post WW2
I guess.

Posted by: illiniwek at January 20, 2019 03:16 PM (Cus5s)

The US did not invoke mercantilism as the British did. They were forced to trade with British firms who paid them off in "goods" instead of gold which they needed to pay their taxes with. This is why smuggling was such a big deal in the early colonies. After the civil war started Lincoln was in favor of what is known as the American System. It had been blocked by the South who hated it. It favored high import taxes to be used to pay for improvements the North wanted. With the South no longer blocking it he implemented that. And we operated under that system until the income tax was passed. we still operate under it to some extent.

the history of mercantilism involved gold, but that was currency. Trump is returning to America First, which was American policy till the "free traders" arrived and said only profits mattered, not how or where that profit was made.

America First style "mercantilism" (you brought up the word) ... is about returning to that pre-80's globalism adventure, in which we built China into a threat, and enriched a lot of globalists along the way.

"CEOs, stated in 1981 that 'the long term viability of the corporation
depends upon its responsibility to the society of which it is a part'

That view changed in the 1980's spurred on by Milton

economists who argued the 'only social responsibility of business is to
increase its profits'

You can't really trust Wiki on anything remotely political. The British form of mercantilism designed their foreign and trade policy around favoring "industries' they liked and who supported them politically. One example was the India based tea companies.

So the public got to pay higher prices for goods from the favored companies who made huge profits.

In the American system importers of foreign hardware products had to pay higher prices for those goods or the ones made in the North who were protected. This was a major sore point with the agricultural based South and what produced the term "tariffs of abomination" which sparked the Nullification Crisis in the mid 1800s.

Nothing of what our current economic policies, under Trump or anyone else resembles mercantalism in any way. Mercantalism wasn't nation building, it was amassing fortunes for the monarchies by turning their population into serfs. Pressing subjects into service to export goods and ship currency back to the country. The little amounts of imports allowed were mostly exclusive to the aristocracy.

What mercantalism does resemble, is the modern day socialist autocracies like China, Venezuela, Cuba. It's is not a policy for building nation states, it is one that rots them and deprives their subjects of material comforts in life.

Trade deficits are misunderstood as something inherently bad because the media uses them to bludgeon Republican presidents and their readers are conditioned to think deficit = bad, surplus = good. Wealth of Nations was a hard refutation of mercantalism because Smith demonstrated that trade is intuitively mutually beneficial for both parties, there isn't a winner and a loser absent fraud. In the event that either party would be disadvantaged by trade occuring, no trade would occur.

China has accumulated lots of US dollars from decades of exports and very little imports. Sitting on those dollars doesn't do much for them, eventually most of those dollars will go into buying American goods or reinvesting into American businesses.

236 This was a major sore point with the agricultural based South and what produced the term "tariffs of abomination" which sparked the Nullification Crisis in the mid 1800s.
Posted by: Vic at January 20, 2019 04:02 PM (mpXpK)

Especially important to the South because their agriculture economy was export heavy to Europe, and so tariffs on European goods directly reduced the South's wealth by reducing the volume of goods they could get in exchange for their cotton and tobacco.

238 "The British form of mercantilism designed their foreign and trade policy
around favoring 'industries' they liked and who supported them
politically." vic

that partly sounds like America First, except the part where they used slaves for their tea products, and basically forced America to buy it. This article may interest you Vic ... on the subject of the colonialists ... addresses your intolerable acts ... and more. and on their mercantilism ... (thought they favor "fair trade balance" to combat the China mercantilism)

"This boosted wages for Englishmen and multiplied the number of
individuals working in 'cutting edge' industries like textile mills.
Thus, tariffs -- mercantilism -- fertilized the soil in which the Industrial
Revolution sprouted."

240 I take a look at Drudge just about everyday, seeing what's the stupidest news tidbit they're pimping. Today has a world wide survey saying globalism is the way to go. 10,000 people out of the worlds masses were surveyed. Out of the billions, that should give us the pulse of the people, providing they contacted the Sami in north Finland and the starving pygmies in New Guinea.

thx for the better explanation, but as my first link showed, China does not just sit on those dollars and wait to put them back in some magical global trade balance.

They buy assets, including our debt on which we must then pay them interest. Even worse when they come to America and buy up our industries, or our real estate. (I know that didn't work out well for the Japanese in the 80's, but it may not be the same now).

The other link with Bannon shows they have a plan to build out their own trade routes, and are buying up resources around the world. None of that is part of "balanced trade" and it does not magically balance out in the end.

"Nation Building" ... well, it can build nations, even if the people become serfs. But it could also bring back jobs, if done with a different government ... all "capitalism" mostly served the wealthy historically ... it is our liberty and justice for all government that made the difference. (till globalism and 2Big2Fail/Jail bailouts)

242 Thought we had moved to the new thread, so it here it is again:
Recent discussions on free trade and mercantilism are off the mark, IMHO.

The current issue is that the US has done several things (or allowed them to happen) over the last few decades that have pushed jobs abroad, especially in manufacturing.

High US corporate tax rates is but one of many examples. So the recent cut from a 35% rack rate to 20% was a Jobs Bill, you see. (Only industrials paid rack rate, you see).

Classic economic theory assumes that we're each a selfish Nietzchean monad. But it's in my interest that a guy in Indiana has a job to pay into our Welfare State rather than being a meth head burden.

And we've enabled China to be a global trade leech in so many ways, at the expense of our own. In theory, and even more so in practice.

And no one used to talk about it. Except in elite rags to say that flyover Deplorables should just fuck off and die already.

Until Trump saw his political opening. Miles of undeveloped beach front property that had been left abandoned by smart politicians.

Gee .. that sounds so nice and innocuous. If only ownership were totally meaningless ... "they're just dollars ... nameless, faceless, ownerless dollars .... they're all coming back!"

I mean, really.

246 yeah - competition against a strong, relatively unified America with a huge manufacturing base of the 70s and 80s is just like competing against a Balkanized, service industry based, wussified America of the 2020s... Idiots.
