Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | March For Life ONTPretty light on content tonight (read: none) because I was at the March For Life all day and I'm tired, but I will write down some of my impressions of the day. I'll try and throw in some ONT type stuff at the end, if you don't care about the march just scroll down.
It was an overcast day in DC, with temperatures in the 40s, but that didn't seem to dampen anyone's enthusiasm. The ground was covered with an inch or so of snow that had fallen overnight, snow that was rapidly being ground into slush and then just water, creating a quagmire on the National Mall. I was glad I was wearing boots, although I saw more then one Franciscan Friar wading through the morass in sandals. I got there by Metro about noon, arriving at the Smithsonian Metro station. There was a man there with a large wooden cross made of seasoned 4X4 timber trying to figure out how much he needed on his metro card to exit. Turned out to be a quarter, which I gave him, telling him that I'd always thought Matthew 16 was metaphorical. I then joined the crowd passing through the turnstiles. As I came up the elevator into daylight, I could hear the buzz of a gigantic crowd above. Exiting the station, the speaker's podium was just to my left, with a large screen above it showing the current speaker. I had arrived too late to hear Ben Shapiro refuse to kill baby Hitler, but the slate of speakers was in full swing. I circled around to the edge of the crowd along Jefferson Drive to get a better view as I ate the sandwich I had brought for lunch.Vice President Pence soon spoke to the crowd, oddly enough he didn't mention electrocuting gay folks in concentration camps.
*Mumble mumble* years ago, a young woman found her life shattered. She had fallen for a man who turned out to be a cad. He left her alone and pregnant, to return to a wife and kids that she had known nothing about. Scared and humiliated, she traveled to Texas. There she gave birth to a son. The nurse handed her the baby, and then realized that this was an adoption case and took him away. Sobbing, she thought "He's going to a better life. He's going to people who will love and care for him, as I can't" And I did. But she was wrong. She may not have been able to care for me, but I never for a moment believed that she didn't love me. 35 years later we met again, for the first time, and I told her that. And that's why I have 2 moms. This is what #MarchForLife means to me.Now let me see if I can squeeze some ONT content in. Jobs for Morons Cops are looking for volunteers to get drunk Kutztown is looking for a few good drunks. Cops in the Allentown, Pa., suburb posted an ad on their Facebook page seeking three "volunteers" to drink hard liquor in excess and maybe even mouth off to arresting officers without consequence.Better get your applications in fast, they only need 3 people. Every year they do that. Every. Damn. Year. Not like old hunting and or fishing shows. My student said he will not be an uncle because his brothers are such jerks. Then he said he could NOT wait to be a father!!! And I said he had better and his female classmates said they were going to warn his girlfriend. Ha ha.

If I'm buying, it's Popeyes. Even then, only the spicy version.
About 8 years ago, the local KFC had an all you can eat lunch buffet for $4.99; I'd hit it every couple of weeks and that would be my only meal of the day. I'd bring a book, and wait for fresh hot crispy chicken to be brought out. Their slaw and mashed potatoes are/were decent too. It would get crowded, so I timed my visit to near the start of the buffet. Then came the descent. First, they jacked the price by a buck. My visits became rarer. Then they stopped serving breasts, and I quit going. Then they jacked the price again, and NOBODY went. Goodbye, buffet. Posted by: GnuBreed at January 18, 2019 10:27 PM (Z4rgH) 138

The album hits an all-time McCartney low with "Despite Repeated Warnings". Six plus minutes of execrable nearly tuneless music and stupid lyrics. It's sad really. Paul McCartney is one of the few people in the world who doesn't have to prove a damn thing to anyone. He's been wildly successful for over 50 years. After watching the self-pantsing exercises of Buzzfeed and NBC I do have to wonder..... Is the Golden Scalp Weasel pranking them? I know he did that years ago, calling radio stations and claiming to be a "John Miller" (or some such name) to give info on the Donald's movements. Is he doing that now? Having people "prank" the news media since they are suckers for anything anti-Trump to destroy their reputations? Jewells, you don't like *anything* Paul McCartney did solo, even in the 1970s? Really?
I can understand disliking his first solo album, which I've read sounded like a bunch of thrown-together rough demos of songs, especially compared to the super-polished work the Beatles always released. Supposedly Paul was just plain pissed off about the breakup, and at the same time desperately to record and release something where he didn't have to run all his ideas past John. But IMHO a lot of what he did from 1971 to 1983, especially Live & Let Die, Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, Another Day, Listen To What The Man Said, Band On The Run, is as good (or sometimes, even more enjoyable) than a lot of Beatles tracks. I also in fact just got McC's solo albums, Ram and Band On The Run. I found I really like Nineteen Eighty-Four (although I don't understand why Paul did this weird southern twang for it) on BOTR, and Smile Away on Ram (which sounds to me a lot like his kiss-off song for the Fab Four). Christopher, I can understand that about George Harrison. Sad that John/Paul were so dismissive of so much of his work when the band was together.
In ANY OTHER BAND, Harrison would have been the natural leader. But it was just his luck to end up in a band where the two major players, besides being in charge, were actually (or at least, considered) even more talented that he was. Posted by: qdpsteve at January 18, 2019 10:58 PM (miE9U) 257
Speaking of adoption - does anybody watch Long Lost Family on TLC? It's about adoptees searching for their birth parents and birth mothers searching for their adopted kids. Occasionally it's a sibling searching for an adopted sibling. Ancestry.com is a sponsor and helps with the research and dna testing. I don't think I've watched an episode yet where I haven't cried. Really moving - and it's sad how so many of the moms think their kids will hate them for giving them up, and that's never the case. The kids are always so grateful and understanding of why their mothers gave them up.

I have an 'idiot at work' story that, if it had been filmed back then, would have made the video.
In college, I got a summer job at a small local lumber store thanks to my friend who was driving their delivery truck. He left and I took over driving the truck. It was a 12-foot flatbed, 8-gear truck with very touchy air brakes. So I'm teaching a new guy on the truck as I'm leaving the job. He goes with me on a few runs, both warehouse pickups and home deliveries. The day comes for his big solo. He goes out and comes back with a load of 2x4s some of which had crashed through the back window, not quite reaching the front windshield and also narrowly missing his head. What happened? After all the warnings about the touchy air brakes, he had hit them too hard with the load he was carrying. He was gone within the hour of returning with the now damaged truck. Really moving - and it's sad how so many of the moms think their kids will hate them for giving them up, and that's never the case. The kids are always so grateful and understanding of why their mothers gave them up.
I highly recommend the show. It's one of my favorites. Posted by: biancaneve at January 18, 2019 10:58 PM (hkMx0) -------------------- As I mentioned earlier, I'm an adoptive parent. I'm not sure if I would want to watch that show, just due to my own daughters circumstances. Her Birth mother is an alcoholic, and her sister is 18 years older than her. Last I heard, her sister was still in jail for accessory to murder. No word on Birth mother. Thankfully, we got her when she was one day old. My theory on the Pelosi kerfluffle
First up, to requisition a large military (luxury) aircraft for the junket, she added Afghan and Egypt stops when her main goal was to partay in Europe for a week. And notice the only invitees were House Dems; this was a reward to her loyalists for making her Speaker. Then Trump caught wind of her scheme, and we all know what happened next. Then came the one day delay in a response from Nancy, as she cooked up a plausible semi-lie to explain away this second House vacation in less than 3 weeks in session. And throw a little shade at the Trumpster while she was at it. Heh heh heh. Posted by: GnuBreed at January 18, 2019 11:09 PM (Z4rgH) Posted by: freaked at January 18, 2019 11:09 PM (UdKB7) 296

@Calm Mentor - You at least know enough to give your daughter some bare bones info about her birth family. Some of the adoptees on the show know absolutely nothing about their origins. And of course they only show the stories that are successful and where both the parent and child agree to go through with the show. It does give a realistic look at abortion. Some of the moms were in a truly bad situation and are still not doing great. In those cases it's very clear that they did their child a huge favor by allowing the child to be adopted.

Posted by: biancaneve at January 18, 2019 11:25 PM (hkMx0) ------------------------ Agreed, but we were kinda forced into this. It was supposed to be a "closed adoption", meaning no information about us went out to the birth mother's family. We communicated by writing several times a year in writing through our adoption agency. Well, they got sloppy and forwarded written stuff with our return info on it. We then began getting late night phone calls, drunken, from birth mom, and letters from her sister, from prison. This was when daughter was 12. We had told her, early on, that she was adopted. We did this at the time she began to ask where babies came from. We in no way wanted her traumatized later in life by finding out she had been living a lie. This was an upsetting couple of months for her, but she came around. Kids are resilient, thank God. Posted by: Calm Mentor's GoFundMe at January 18, 2019 11:44 PM (ffYR/) 357

Posted by: Froderick Wonkensteen at January 18, 2019 11:51 PM (+dsLj) Bush was forced on Reagan by the GOP political 'consultants'. Reagan was an outsider, not as much as Trump but still an outsider, so Bush was put in to temper the Reagan 'tantrum' exhibited by the voters. Then Bush proved he is no Reagan by losing in his second election to a governor from Arkansas. I fear the problem with Reagan will be the problem with Trump: Who comes after? Who can carry the torch with sufficient 'I don't give a fucks'? Who would pull Imperial Nancy's plane at the last second like Trump? 80 Jewells: That's when you buy a spool of ball and chain wire from Fire Mountain and whip out a bunch of necklaces. Twenty or so inches of chain, a ball and chain connector, a bunch of 18 gauge jump rings, and the medallions. You can make a couple dozen in less than an hour -- unless you have one or two feline assistants. Then it takes all day.

I'll only say this. The pro-abortion movement tries to make it all about how we treat the pregnant woman. But the pro-life movement is about loving and caring for both the woman and the child. We're the ones that built adoption agencies, crisis pregnancy centers, counseling centers. We're often the ones that cover the bill when it comes due.
Why? Because it's about love. And the folks who have shouted about "free love" for 5 decades have never understood the thing for which they clamor. Keep loving. Keep helping. Keep strong. Keep life. Posted by: GWB at January 19, 2019 01:02 AM (xY/CR) 462

Sad to say, but plagiarism is totally acceptable to the Left. Doris Kearns Goodwin. Elizabeth Warren. Joe Biden. None of them even blinks an eye. That's just the way the cookie crumbles to their way of thinking.
OTOH, back many, many years ago, I freely admit to a couple of accidental plagiarisms of my own if you go by the once accepted standard that three words or more cited without attribution was considered plagiarism. I'd take notes from various books, changing the wording as I went along. Then when I actually wrote the paper, my brain would remember the original wording, I'd think it sounded better, and my notes had different words. Voila! Instant plagiarism. Talk about embarrassing! But it looks to me that not only did Goldberg exceed the three word rule on several occasions, he also lifted the entire concept. Again, going back to my school years, finding the same fact or assertion in three or more books by different authors made it "common knowledge" and needed no footnote or other citation. Goldberg originally credited Ace as the originator of the idea which means he damn well knew Ace was the one and only primary source and he should have acknowledged that right off the bat. I hope Ace eats him for breakfast. (As both a history major in college and a bookseller for eighteen years, damn little annoys me more than plagiarism. It's nothing but stealing under a different name.) Posted by: Captain Josepha Sabin at January 19, 2019 01:44 AM (VUg7O) 502

If the Senate has any balls, if the House tries to subpoena Trump's translator when he was talking to Putin, the Senate should subpoena Valerie Jarrett's translator when she was negotiating the Iran deal with the Iranians. Also, looking into ValJar's finances might be illuminating - I remain convinced that a lot of the cash money that Obama sent the Iranians got recycled back to Washington DC. Any opinions out there among the Magyar?
Posted by: Bandersnatch at January 19, 2019 01:38 AM (fuK7c) There has been a change in linguistic understanding (settled science and whatnot). There are two theories about the origin on the Magyars; the less accepted is that the tribes originated in the far, far East. There is evidence for this, but I haven't heard about a specific connection to Koreans. If you had suggested it when I was teaching Samsung engineers in Hungary, hilarity would have ensued (those guys are lovable maniacs). Hungarian and Finnish are connected in language, and Hungarians and Finns by significant DNA. However, it seems that the Finns and Magyars are not parts of the same tribe, but that they travelled together with reasonable friendship and cooperation for centuries. Ergo exchange of some linguistic elements and, uh, DNA. Posted by: Miklos, de la Raza Ungara at January 19, 2019 01:49 AM (zCyNd) 506

My cousin was adopted. My aunt tried to have kids for years and it never happened, so she eventually adopted a girl, and as luck would have it a year or so later she got pregnant and had her own kid. Anyway, my adopted cousin met her real birth father this past year. He was blown away. He never knew he had a daughter out there because the mother, the women he was dating, never told him. I guess they separated and she went off and had my cousin and gave her up. By all accounts he is a really good dude and is absolutely over the top thrilled by it all. He is married and has a family. Seems the mother on the other hand was a different story, my cousin don't really want to associate with her or her family. I don't know the details. The upside though, and to her credit, is that she had my cousin and didn't abort her. She was a great kid and became a great mom with 3 kids of her own.

I recall that Nancy threw a fit once because the AF had only a smaller plane available, which had to stop to refuel half-way to California. When Leon Panetta was Secretary of Defense, he got a big military plane filled with communications equipment when he flew home to California, because he was in the military chain of command, and needed to talk to the White House and the military if a North Korean missile strike started coming in. She hates it when I say that. I make it too "personal". ---- This illustrates the need to take back our language, and "framing" the conversation. Generally we are polite and refrain from unpleasantness, but doing so we've allowed the enemy to gain an upper hand. It is now better to be this blunt and honest. Now the March for Life was a yuuge crowd--but most of the press simply said "thousands" attended. Well "thousands" can mean anything from two thousand on up---and in this case waaay up. But you won't hear it in the press. Posted by: Comanche Voter at January 19, 2019 12:50 PM (WRSbt) 689
