(And The ONT)

The Saturday Night Joke

A Marine squad was marching north of Fallujah when they came upon an Iraqi terrorist who was badly injured and unconscious. On the opposite side of the road was an American Marine in a similar but less serious state. The Marine was conscious and alert and as first aid was given to both men, the Squad Leader asked the injured Marine what had happened.

The Marine reported, "I was heavily armed and moving north along the highway here, and coming south was a heavily armed insurgent. We saw each other and both took cover in the ditches along the road.

I yelled to him that Saddam Hussein was a miserable, lowlife scum-bag who got what he deserved.

He yelled back, "Barack Obama is a lying, good-for-nothing, left wing Commie who isn't even an American.

So I said, "Osama Bin Laden dresses and acts like a frigid, mean-spirited lesbian!

He retaliated by yelling, "Oh yeah? Well, so does Nancy Pelosi!

And, there we were, in the middle of the road, shaking hands, when a truck hit us.

The government shut down.

Many couples felt their cabin fever break when the snow began to melt. But for federal workers trapped in the void of the shutdown, there is no tomorrow. There is only one long today, with walls inching in around them and nothing to do but annoy the people they love most

Hey Honey, want a crisp? (Wink, wink)

Love your partner and love crisps - then here is the perfect Valentine's food for you.

Tyrells has launched the first ever crisps to contain aphrodisiac properties.

The crisp brand claim their new aphrodisiac variety will "get pulses racing" on Valentine's Day by combining two simple ingredients - sweet honey and the firey spice of chilli

The Opioid crisis has hit the pet world.

This can’t be real, Kentucky police officer John Thomas thought to himself when he got the call from Elizabethtown Animal Hospital on December 4, 2014. Veterinarian Chad Bailey explained that Alice, a female golden retriever he was treating, had identical, 2-inch scars, and he suspected the owner was responsible for both. Furthermore, according to the dog’s medical history, she had been injured and treated for the same injury a half dozen times over the last year. Bailey first called other clinics, warning them not to prescribe the pet owner any more medication. Then he called the cops. “Dr. Bailey knew exactly what the woman was up to,” Thomas tells me. “It was the vet equivalent of doctor shopping.”

NEVER. SAW. THIS. COMING!!!

One set of identical twins, two different ancestry profiles.

At least that's the suggestion from one of the world's largest ancestry DNA testing companies.

Last spring, Marketplace host Charlsie Agro and her twin sister, Carly, bought home kits from AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA and Living DNA, and mailed samples of their DNA to each company for analysis.

Despite having virtually identical DNA, the twins did not receive matching results from any of the companies.

A daycare operator in Maryland is facing charges of child neglect stemming from an incident last April when a young child was discovered drunk while in her care. Doris Ott called the young boy's mother when he fell out of his chair and would not wake up.

When the mother arrived, she found her son "pale and limp" and rushed him to the hospital. Doctors said that he had a blood-alcohol content of .203, which is nearly three times the legal limit for an adult

What is most significant is not that Trump made the offer, but that the Dems rejected it out of hand and thereby demonstrating their unreasonableness.

45 My analysis of Trump's offer:

He made a really good, highly negotiable offer, intentionally including many things Democrats would like. He knew they would reject it out of hand. If they didn't, fine, he's ready to negotiate with it as a basis. If not, Phase II: Emergency declaration, military builds the wall, and he has a really good story about why he did that.

64 Guess we'll see soon enough, but I do not understand why anyone thinks Trump's proposal changes a thing, politically. The Dems are the same ones who just romped in the mid-terms. The same filter/barrier/distortion provided by the "press" is in operation this moment, and most people will not think the Dems unreasonable, who didn't think so a week ago.

Allegedly some freshmen Dems in the House are a bit uncomfortable. That's nice. And meaningless, without enough of them literally revolting against their leadership - odds of that?

DACA - a ridiculously unconstitutional bit of vandalism that of course actually takes more than a week to erase in the judiciary - has shown it's a lever without leverage. Trump punked the Dems on this once before. Zero impact on anything.

In any case, it's a good thing the mid-terms are just ahead, because putting all this front/center before the voters is the only way to actually effect change, via election outcomes based on actual issues (the way Trump was nominated and elected).

Oh.

Greetings fappers and fappees.

Just got in from my gig and talked to B'Gal in the hospital. She's in good spirits but still isn't feeling too hot. Her hemoglobin count got critically low and she got a call from her rheumatologist around 5:00 yesterday and he said go to the ER right now. They gave her a transfusion and finally got her diastolic BP into the 40's, up from the 30's when I took her in last night. Systolic BP was fine, which I thought was kinda weird.
Anyway, she's making a pit stop and will call me back in a couple of minutes. She thanks you all for your prayers and well wishes. And so do I. Y'all are teh shiznit.

113 One of the reasons given why Nancy didn't choose to fly commercial into Kabul was that there are so few commercial flights into Kabul that the Taliban would know when to target the airport when Nancy arrived.

Today, there are four flights to Kabul from Dubai, one from Istanbul, three from Delhi, and two from Sharijah, all of which would be plausible flight transfer points after leaving the US.

With ten available flights a day, it would be a breeze for the Taliban to figure out which one Nancy was on, obviously.

I am actually quite impressed with how closely the twins matched on four out of five of the services. 23andme was the outlier, but they were still within a a few percentage points for each category on the samples from the two women.

My normal expectation would be that if you took 3 samples of your own DNA, and ran it through those tests 3 times, you would get results about as varying as those 23andMe ones.

324 For the record - Fox radio news is indistinguishable from the rest of the commie media.

So weird when you're looking for Levin, Rush, even Hannity, or the like, and the local talk radio stations put CBS or ABC or Fox on the half-hours. ALL GARBAGE, ALL LIES, ALL THE TIME! Well, I guess they make some bucks, but, really?

Fox: After reporting fairly but perfunctorily on Trump's speech, the News Jockey chick said, "Polls show the majority of Americans blame Trump and the GOP for the shutdown." (I would say, thank?)

Fox: Long clip of Gloria Steinem speaking at the March for Death today. "Greetings, Comrades! Orange Man Bad!" *or equivalent* (to huge cheers).

Fox: And Chug Schemer saying Trump is engaging in blackmail or hostage situation by keeping the government closed. Classic high-order projection there, blackmailer Chuggy.

Okay, sorry to drag politics into the ONT, but you'll understand how I had to get that off my chest, out of my soul, and off my shoes.

A relative of mine used to work at a veterinary clinic. It's not in the greatest part of town, so they have steel doors, bars on the windows, and a strongroom to keep the medications.

One morning they discovered they'd been the victim of a break-in, and the thieves had made off with a considerable amount of apomorphine. Sure, it has "morphine" in the name, so it must be good to get you high, right?

Well... not really. The clinic uses it to induce vomiting in dogs (because dogs will eat anything). The wiki page says:

"IV administration of apomorphine is highly discouraged, as it can crystallize in the veins and create a blood clot (thrombus) and block a pulmonary artery (pulmonary embolism)."

Yup. The local station that used to have Rush, Hannity, etc. had Fox on the half hour, which was bearable. They couldn't afford to renew their contracts, so another local station got them, and...they have North Carolina News Network at the top of the hour, which is exactly like listening to CBS news at its very farthest lean to the left. I have returned to the Duchess' lair. Problem is fixed. 'Twas and IP address mismatch with the DNS server on my router. IOW, my router was reporting a different internal IP address than the machine actually had. Which the DHCP server on the router gave it.

It was odd, and I'm wondering just why that happened. It was the static DHCP assignment. A MAC address change didn't seem to persist across router reboots.

That's the trouble with remote access. If the network gets screwed up, the whole thing is fucked.

No, it wasn't the ISP. This was all internal -- LAN side of the router. The router is a Linksys 3200ACM running the OpenWRT custom firmware, which is complicated as hell, but gives you endless configuration options, including a DNS server for the LAN side.

Now, my new screamer motherboard has three fucking networking interfaces onboard. Two Intel chipset, and one 10Gbps Aguantia. I had switched which one I was using, and updated the static DHCP assignment.

It seems that didn't persist through a reboot, because the router didn't remember the new MAC address. When the machine rebooted, it gave it a different IP4 address. But since the computer name was associated with the static IP address, that confused the DNS server, and it didn't report the correct IP4 address.

There was no actual central heat, just a coal stove in the living room and a coal fireplace in the dining room. And nothing at all upstairs, where the bedroom was. Oh DAMN did it get cold. I slept in shorts and tee shirt, sweatshirt and sweat pants, socks, had three heavy blankets on top of me as well as two large cats that slept on my feet and legs.
Bathroom was downstairs. I put that shit off for as long as possible at night.

483 There was an article a week ago about how the lines at mexicna gas stations are going around the block because the new pres is cracking down on theft.

there is so much theft at so many points along the route from the refinery that the gas stations cannot be supplied without the thieves.

no reason to assume anything nefarious in the pipeline explosion.

only interesting thing is it shows how much closer mexico is to a third world shithole than a civilized nation.

There are a couple of pipelines that run through here. One is out of service and they ran fiber optic through it.

The other two are still going. When I was a kid, late '70s, one blew. Big ol' boom in the middle of the night, and there was a lake of diesel fuel about 2 miles from here. Major repair op. My father and some neighbors went over there and talked to the guys.

One neighbor, smart ass, said something about all that free diesel fuel just lying around.

The pipeline guy said, "I can't condone that, but if you did come out, don't smoke and be sure and filter it well. It would save me a lot of cleanup...."

Nobody took him up on it.

Heh. Yeah, that was my thought too. I've heard a lot of excuses-er, justifications this past week.
-The doctor said it would be okay as long as she just rested-The others just want to "take in the resort experience"-Due to the gas shortage they wouldn't be doing that much outside the resort anyway
-The resort just got bought by Americans, who had to bring it up to American standards (still not sure on the veracity of that one)-Crohn's isn't "that big of a deal"-And the unspoken, biggest justification of all: I doubt they'd get a refund
Oh well, I just have to help watch their kids and dog while praying for their safety for the third year in a row.

I can't figure out where to turn mine off either. The valves under the sink don't shut it off completely (they're seized or corroded), so I can't really take the thing apart. I followed the lines back along the basement ceiling as far as the wall to the laundry room but for all I know, they go all the way to the main and the water heater. And besides, even if I replace the faucet, I still want the shut-off valves replaced and I don't have the tools or expertise to put new ones on. At this point, anything I do will make the inevitable plumber call more expensive. Might as well get it done right.

I live in an old house that was converted into a duplex long ago so both units are on the same water meter and the landlord gets the bill. The tubs don't have an on/off valve so the only way to do it would be to turn it off at the meter. I've found that but can't get the handle to budge. I'm terrified of breaking it. I can also see me getting the handles off to replace the gasket and then not being able to get it back together right and making it worse.

Those valves are usually threaded. You've got a threaded adapter on the pipe onto which the under-sink valve threads. Replacing it is usually just a matter of screwing the old one off and screwing the new one on.

559 Hogmartin,
Jim at New Dawn isn't wrong. Pex, sharkbites, and an $80 crimper can flat cure ANY plumbing problem nowadays.

Plumbers here charge $110 to show up, then get $110/hour in 15 minute increments. I've never seen a quick one.

Posted by: MarkY at January 20, 2019 01:19 AM (b7HO6)

560 The pluming solution is to replace everything with PEX lines and fittings.

See, wasn't that easy?

--------

A few years ago, I had pipe rupture in my bathroom. I had to shut off water and go in through the bedroom wall. Very frustrating.

It was the first time I used PEX/sharkbites but it won't be the last. Super easy!

I'm just a running an i5-9600K. 6 cores. It's a screamer compared to my older systems.

The plumbers were easily the worst. They took the time of true craftsmen, without the quality. Drove me nuts. I fired them after the rough-in inspection.
Learned a whole lot about it. More than I wanted, and now more than I need.

565 >> Are you running Windows 10, or did you manage to get a Linux variant running?

All of the above. I've got Fedora 29 installed to the bare metal in UEFI mode.

And I've got two Win 10 Pro x64 installs, one UEFI, and the other one in CSM mode.

Intel (and MS) don't support anything pre Win-10 on the 390 chipset. All of th 300 series I think. You can't install anything before that. It won't recognize any of the hardware, and no one has hacked up any thing for it, and probably won't.

Now, interestingly the 32-bit Win 10 will install, and I played with that in CSM mode, but only 2.2GB memory is usuable! 1.8GB of stuff is mapped into the lower address space.

Linux runs fine. The catch is the Optane accelerator thing which I'm using. It pairs a hard drive with a M.2 Optane module. It works like a charm. However, Intel only supports that with 64-bit Windows 10.

Linux sees that as Intel RAID drive which it won't touch. But, other than that, it works fine.

Well I'll have to look into that, this thread is the first I've heard of it. I get it. But the way the plumber is gonna do it is use a short pipe cutter, and cut everything above the copper completely away.
He's gonna install a sharkbite fitting that slides over that copper pipe, giving it the seal of an old-fashioned soldered connection, with a nipple the size of a standard sink fitting...
Hook it up and charge some sweet labor.

Honestly, though, it's like working under the steering wheel of a truck or car. I'd just as soon pay someone to lay on their back and do that crap anymore.
If it cost $1000 to hire it, and I could do it for $200, okay, I'll lay on my back for a coupla hours.
But it isn't gonna be that kind of spread. My guess is he's gonna charge 2 hours, and $100 parts. You'd save maybe a coupla hundred.

Yeah, that's really where I'm going with it. It's way the hell under the back of a deep sink, behind a disposal, and I don't know what other surprises I might come across during the installation. There are some discretionary repairs I can do to learn how PEX works, but since this is a scheduled call and not emergency I'd rather have it over and done and not have to crawl under that particular sink.

I used to dread soldering ("sweating") copper pipe. Until I learned how to do it. Now I love to do it and prefer it to anything. I was in my late '20s IIRC when I learned how to sweat correctly.

And another trick. Heating with an O/A torch. :-) It will heat it up so fast the solder will flow like water in no time. Hold it on too long and you'll burn up your flux, though.

You know, that copper pipe may not be all the corroded. The brunt of it may just be the valve material. Copper is pretty noble. I've seen that a lot. Piece of steel fitting onto copper. Steel is corroded to shit, but the copper is still good. Just surface crap.

If only there were some kind of component that could - bear with me here - take on some of the energy from the flux, store it, and discharge it at a later time. That is, take energy from the flux, hold the energy, and then discharge energy through the flux. What would we call such a thing?

588 Leftists frequently view politics through the prism of gang rape, don't they?

Remember Sandra Bernhard fantasizing about Sarah Palin being"gang raped by my big black brothers" if Palin dared to come to New York?

Then we had Azealia Banks saying,"Honestly, lets find the biggest, blackest, burliest n*****s and let them run a train on her(Sarah Palin). Film it and put it on World Star."

At the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, we had Democrats breathlessly accusing him, without evidence, of having routinely organized the drugging and gang-raping of young women while Kavanaugh was in high school.

Democrats also insisted that the "Devil's Triangle" game that Kavanaugh and friends frequently referenced in high school referred not to a drinking game, but their affinity for forcing a woman to have sex with three men at once.

And now we have Alexandria Ocrazio-Cortez telling us that the Democrat Party is going to "run a train" on America using the "Progressive" agenda....

Wow.

It's certainly possible and maybe even likely, but I really can't tell until I get it apart and wirebrushed down. I guess. You'd use a wire brush for that, right? See, I don't even know. But if it is corroded and it disintegrates right there, I am nine kinds of boned. Better to have somebody with a van full of stuff who's seen it before than me, who has no van and who has not seen it before.

592
I'm remembering on of an old aunt's plumbing repair jobs I had to do. It was a bathroom sink, shut-off valve corroded and stuck.

Here, they had used a galvanized nipple coming out of the wall. It just screwed into a female copper fitting sweated on. The damn thing had corroded all over.

The whole thing came out when I put a wrench on it, and I just stubbed a brass nipple back into the wall.

You could put a wrench on it and see if it wants to turn. It might. If it doesn't want to,then call the plumber.

The boundary, inasmuch as I've ever thought about setting one, is: what happens if this thing breaks and I'm not around? That rules out things like water, gas, and electrical service. Gas, I don't think I can even touch if I want my homeowner's insurance to pay up when my house explodes. Electrical I could do but don't until it comes out of a wall (so a replacement ceiling fan is OK, but I wouldn't fit a new receptacle and add a circuit). Water is the least of these but unless someone who knows what they're doing looks it over after I'm done, I'll always have the nagging feeling that I'll come home to a waterfall in the basement because I overlooked something everyone else already knows.

--------

Never use lighter fluid or any petrochemicals, even wax, to start a fire under your chimney. Residue from hydrocarbons in the chimney will void many insurance policies, even if the fire is totally unrelated to a woodstove or inset.

So even if it's a gas explosion or electrical fire, some companies will use this as a loophole to get out of paying the policy.

Everything is running fine. The thing came with the version 1.6 BIOS, which I flashed to 1.8 after I got Windows first installed. They just released 1.9 and I flashed that earlier tonight.

Fedora installed in UEFI mode without a hitch and is fast as hell. Now don't have any SSDs on the M.2, just the 32GB Optane module on the M.2 #2 slot.

I've got 3 hard drives in it, a 3TB, 4TB, and 2TB. Plus two other old ones that had data from previous sytem on it.

The 3TB and 4TB are GPT, and I've got them with EFI sys partitions. Fedora boots of the 4TB. Win 10 off the 3TB. The Optane module is paired with the 3TB drive.

The 2TB I use for CSM booting, and that's where the CSM install of Win10 x64 is. The Optane drivers work with it and recognize the paired drive, but it works best in system drive mode.

No real problems. The only thing is crazy. Using EasyBCD, Visual BCD and some other low level BCD tools can lock the thing up hard when it boots in the UEFI mode. No problem with Win 10 in CSM mode.

That's the only funny business I've seen with it.

You might want to check out ASRock's boards and read the threads. You might find stuff there on any problems with the setup you're planning.

622 Today, they'd probably have child protective services called on them--

Why are you letting your child play in the creek?!

Why are you letting your child play 'kick the can' in the road?!

Ride their bike to the next town alone?! What are you thinking?

623 I swear just looked at the clocka few minutes ago and it was only 3am.
Everyone in my neighborhood and time were free range kids.

Despite having virtually identical DNA, the twins did not receive matching results from any of the companies.

Someday the police will come to your door, with a warrant for your arrest, with a charge of murder in the first degree. Based on DNA evidence from one of these companies.

628 He's gonna install a sharkbite fitting that slides over that copper pipe, giving it the seal of an old-fashioned soldered connection, with a nipple the size of a standard sink fitting...

Sharkbite fittings aren't really a permanent repair. Especially with chlorinated water. They have some sort of plastic washer in them that eventually breaks down from the chlorine in the water.

I'm not sure what the timeline is for that. Maybe it's one decade, maybe it's four.

629 Got up early to see how much snow we got...hard to tell. My neighbors roof is clear but weather lady says 8 inches. What happened to the pussy parade yesterday, were there millions there, or am I confused about there being such a thing...

Looks like rain stops at around 10 am this morning with a temperature then of 43 degrees. By 2 pm it drops below 32 degrees. By 8 pm it's 20 degrees. At 8 am tomorrow it's 7 degrees.

Hopefully the roads dry up between 10 am and 2 pm or it's skating rink driving conditions.

To me they're for a quick temporary repair only. Like if you're roughing in copper and want a quick temporary cap.

BTW: This is a pretty good site for hour by hour in the Pville area:

Yes. Little action. I didn't see any tear gas, flash grenades, or even confrontations. Just a lot of marching around. One guy said he walked for 7 hours and a total of 20 miles.

I think the police got told to ease off. There have been a lotta of people getting hurt. One guy in a coma near death after getting beaned in the back of the head. One young girl lost an eye. Another girl jaw fractured in three place. Images going around of nearly 100 people with face and neck injuries.

Police looking like they're trigger-happy doesn't make Macron look good.
