Saturday Morning Coffee Break

sat coffe be strong .jpg

***

Good morning Horde. Saturday morning, let's take a look at a few stories that didn't get their due here at the AoSHQ this past week.

***

  • Bath bombs and vaginas don't mix.

  • Pants optional.

  • I have one question: Why?

  • You can pick your nose, you can pick your friends but you can't pick your family

  • Now for a much better Father/Daughter relationship.

  • I must be ill. I don't hear my wife most of the time.

  • Autonomous vehicles have a long ways to go.

  • The perfect Valentine's Day gift? You decide.

  • Just how much did this guy have to drink?

  • Whole lotta explainin' going on here.

  • Valu-Rite faces a stiff challenge.

  • Once you learn how to tackle you never forget.

  • Sir, are you aroused or is that a big ass snake in your pants?

You know the rules, enjoy these stories or whatever tickles your fancy in this open thread. Don't be running with sharp objects and the 'ettes don't have cooties. Be nice and have a great weekend!!

    2 Saw "Glass" yesterday-

Starts off like the best thing M. Night Shyamalan ever directed. Very crisp, very sharp script. Nice acting. Great directing.

Then as it seems to be comfortably fitting into the superhero mode of escalating battles between SH and SV-

MNS short-circuits the whole thing and takes it in a different direction.

How you respond to this short-circuiting will determine whether you like the movie or not.

    I suspect that there'll be a 50/50 love/hate response from the audience.

Clearly, MNS has been thinking a lot about society lately and wants "Glass" to be as intellectual as it is visceral. This movie has a lot, a lot going on underneath it.

The final twist(Hey! It's MNS. You knew this was coming.) and the way it's motivation it's presented makes me think MNS is a conservative or at least leans in that direction as a classical-style liberal.

I'm trying to be vague here - so nothing to spoil your experience.

Try to read as little as possible before you go.

I liked "Glass" quite a bit but didn't love it. I suppose I admired it's ambitions and construction more than its....uh, let's just say overall story.

Weird sideways semi-sequel possible, but not mandatory depending on how well "Glass" does at the box office, I suppose.

    Check it out.

33 For the record: I don't think Jonah Goldberg committed plagiarism per se, what he did was try to pass off someone else's idea as his own, which is also bad, but not quite the same thing.

It's like writing a column and claiming you have this unique insight only to find out that it's Conquest's Third Law or something like that.

Goldberg knows the rules. If you're a political pundit, you have to give credit for whoever comes up with the concept, be it a Kinsley Gaffe or Muggeridge's Law. To try to pass off an insight as your own when it manifestly wasn't is deeply dishonest.

    In fact, it's theft.

Given that Goldberg's entire gig is to provide political insight, I'd argue that his offense is actually worse than just lifting a paragraph without attribution. He's trying to pretend insight that he simply doesn't have and make it his own.

Because if he had come up with it, you can be damn sure he'd be reminding everyone that it was HIS idea.

BTW, I'm starting to think that Kurt Schlichter's throwaway line about his "smoking hot wife" is a direct challenge to the GOP cucks (like Goldberg) who are married to plain women.

The legal system is crap. Look what Mark Steyn's been dealing with. NRO will move to delay, delay, delay and it will never even get a hearing.

Public humiliation is faster and more effective.

Political types deeply value their own unique insights. They dream of coming up with a concept that other people find useful, which is why they ALWAYS attribute things properly (Kinsley Gaffe, etc.).

76 Some conditional move by Trump today - such as setting a deadline, calling special session, linking everything to real action on border - does make the most sense.

But one tea leaf - this morning's tweet by Trump that "Mexico has done nothing" to stop latest "caravans" from Central America - might indicate a near-term bombshell as well. Closing the border. He did it for 5 hours back a few months ago, in the San Diego sector.

Oh boy. Instantaneous howling from all parties - of the right sort, directed at the provocation (illegal migrants), not the response (US closing the border).

I remain baffled by failure to insist on an ironclad side-agreement on all this with Mexico, in connection with the USMCA trade deal. Anyway, we'll soon see.

Hi Bill. I was a pretty new hire (but still there) at that time and was part of their IT shop so, it missed us. But, as you know, they shuttered a few of the rolling mills and, if memory serves, one or two of the blast furnaces.

BUT - the white hats told us (young IT types) to quit wearing ties/dress clothes to work and to keep our Hondas, Datsuns and Toyotas out of the parking lots. To lay low and watch our asses in the local bars. We hung out at La Villa on Poland-Canfield Rd at the time and really didn't have much trouble but we did keep quiet. Lotta guys never worked again after that.

    1. Some aged German model likes putting long slithering muscles around her neck.

    2. Bob Mueller is colluding with Trump on this Russia thing.

    3. Nevertrumps are nevertrumping.

    4. Some government employees are looking at people's meat, and not getting paid for it.

    5. Gillette only wants to sell razors to chicks and femboi dudes who grow beards to hide the fact they're not really men.

    6. France has a problem with wasps.

    7. R. Kelly, is the greatest magician in history (successfully hiding in plain sight for decades).

    8. Someone else packs Nancy Palsi's luggage.

    Anything else?

92 All right, a story that is sort of related to the china bigamist (trigamist ??) story. With all this newfound wealth, well-to-do married Chinese men are being heavily pursued by young ambitious women. So, the men fall for it, they set them up, visit them, etc. So, there is this entrepreneurial dude who started a service. He, for a reasonable fee, will talk to these 'ladies', and explain to them that it would be best to leave the guy alone. That the family insists, and that there may be consequences. Concubines were part of Chinese culture for centuries, but Communism done away with it.

Just make sure that people like Carlson and Schlichter know what Goldberg is doing. Roger Kimball - basically anyone at American Greatness.

95 About the lying Media. The trumped up anti POTUS stories all have an underlying implausibility that's never questioned. Media lies by giving these stories the time of day.

e.g. Trump never built anything in Russia. He thought about it, and like any early stage development project, non-binding indications of intent got passed around. And had he not gotten elected he might have built. Or not. How did Putin get leverage over something that was never going to happen if Trump got elected. It's a total nothing burger.

145 a brief comment on "plagiarism" and the legal system, since it's being talked about here:

First, did Jonah "plagiarize" Ace's old article? Looks like it. Is that a cheap and lazy thing to do? Sure is. Is that illegal? Actually no, there are no laws per se covering this issue. In Academic circles, its punishable and can get you in hot water with the Academic Promotions Board, and in literary circles it's considered Bad Form and can get you Shunned by Right-Thinking People - but is it "illegal"? Nope.

Now, if a writer can show specific dollar damages in court, due to lost sales for example, then he has a cause of action to sustain a lawsuit. But to do that, the plaintiff has to specify the exact amount of damages and put forward a credible case to support such an estimate.

In this case, Ace could probably waste $50,000 and launch a suit that could cause Jonah to waste $50,000 defending it - but the whole thing would be laughed out of court, eventually. Of course, then there could be suits countersuits and the like over malicious prosecution and the like that could go on for the next 20 years, and they could both throw every last dollar into a fight which neither side could ever win, but which both sides would absolutely lose.

It's been done, quite a few times in fact. This is the how a whole lot of lawyers make easy money - but they're the only ones who benefit.

176 I had to find the link and read Ace in the original (?) post on MacGuffinization of Politics ... to even know what the kerfuffle is. I didn't read Goldberg, just some of those twitter responses defending him. Mostly they say it is OK because MacGuffin itself is an old term.

But my instant analysis is that is not the point ... the point is the application of that term to identity politics, most notably the cult of personality of LightBringer Obama. So Ace did a whole post on that, and Goldberg basically rewrote that concept as his own?

I have no clue how original Ace's original post actually is ... but it seems specific enough that Goldberg should again acknowledge Ace if he is "re-purposing" the whole "package" to expand into something else.

It is more egregious, if the whole article is just restating Ace without giving credit, and not expanding from Ace's "research" into new developments. That is just "I have nothing new to say, I'll just pass off Ace's post as my own".

And it is no defense at all to say MacGuffin was an old term ... it is the expansion of that term applied to Obama's cult of personality ... toward not even achieving policy, just in demanding submission to the man (the god man that came down among us ... or as Oprah said ... "I do BELIEVE, he may be The ONE").

We now have "dirty" Trump as the opposite of Obama, with the MFM trying to destroy the man, but Trump working on policy that the ignored majority demand. We need Ace to write on Trump exposing the fake MacGuffin (kabuki theater) realm .... and doing the hard work of implementing the will of the people. imo

There was about $100,000 in controversy. They fought the suit, through a clearly wrong lower court decsion and through the Texas Court of Appeals, where 6 years later they finally won.

In the end, they spent $1.1 million in legal fees to win $100,000. The other side also spent $1 million of its own. That's what fighting without thinking clearly costs. But the lawyers on both sides were thrilled!

Right, probably not down to any one comment or incident. We also had people around here defending the broken wing girl, when Cory Whatshisname stopped her from following Trump.

That lasted way longer as a serious "debate" around here than it ever should have, and it illustrates how some folks had made up their mind, everything Trump did was badwrong, and they remain, many of them, to this day incapable of seeing how Trump is doing anything right, or that Trump's opponents are doing anything wrong.

That's not about holding onto principles.

One of the early primary debates in '16 (or '15?) had a lot of bickering back and forth (because of course it did), and Trump was being ganged up on by the moderators and a couple of the candidates. Of course he was giving it back better than he got, but...

At one point a question was posed to Cruz. He started to speak, in something of an attempt to calm down the yammering, I think, and in the middle of a nice, reasoned comment, the moderator said something like "oh, it's time for a commercial, so pipe down).

    And Ted piped down.

When they came back from commercial, the moderator opened up a new line of "debate" so the bickering and yammering by the others could begin again.

Did Cruz speak up and let everyone know he wasn't finished with his comments? No, he did not.

Ted is a smart, principled man. By all indications, a truly decent human being.

    He's a terrible politician, though.

I actually don't remember Y-Not's departure, so I'll grant you her for the sake of argument. Jeff B was perpetually snarked upon and I suppose just ultimately got tired of it. Trump's playing a clever game here. He's letting federal employees know that he doesn't hate them, they're simply Pelosi's hostages. He's breaking the linkage between gov't employees (who are disproportionately minority, btw) and the Democrats.

This is how Trump works. He doesn't nip around the margins, he attacks the center of the enemy's strength. Pelosi is pissing off her base and her caucus is starting to freak out.

It's hard for them to blame Bad Orange Man when he's promised no layoffs and full compensation. And then you have Nancy going on junkets.

Was it authorized or actually appropriated?

Lots of budgets are passed 'authorizing' funds so that it fits within the arcane budget caps, but then the appropriation still has to be made.

This allows Congress to claim it voted for something without actually doing anything tangible.

The Soo Locks got money "authorized" for a new lock, but it was meaningless until the actual appropriation happened. That's when dollars were spent on stuff.

For starters, they live daily with the fact that most people hate them, and if you're the kind of person to seek that position, you're the kind of person who thinks that's kind of funny. It was the aftermath of the 2000 election. Before then, there was no consistent rule about which party got which color in the networks' election coverage. Sometimes different networks used different colors in the same election.

But in the 2000 election, the electoral map showing Bush states as red and Gore states as blue was shown night after night, and those colors became cemented in place.

309 Ugh. If we're going to fuss ahoht NRO, it bears mentioning that Legal Insuurection bans for (fairly) criticising Jacobson and staff.

A year of, every so often and politely as possible, asking why one guest was allowed to routinely abuse the other guests without consequence. While we were asked to just take it. Not even the courtesy of a response. And so, further remarks that allowing your guests to be continually abused in your presence was of poor character. Either allow us to fight back or ban the abuser.

All complants, from dozens of regulars, completely ignored. To the point where it becones fair game to speculate that "Rags" must be a sockpuppet that Professor Jacobson (or staff?) don to troll regular and loyal readers with a kind of verbal diarreha, a kind of Jekyll & Hyde indulgence from a professor of law? On a high brow site that prides itself for adherence to Principle and the Rule of Law?

But apparently speculation in the face of deliberate silence (waves to NRO) is not to be tolerated. So Nurse Fuzzy Ratchet strolls, makes up lies you would expext from a Freshman Admin drunk with powernd bans not the abuser but the victims who have been complaining about the abuse. Then proceeds to troll those (like me) who point out the errors, and deletes responses of anyone trying to defend themselves from her distortions of them. And does to me exactly what Amazon did to Legal Insurrection. While the esteemed Professor Jacobson looks on.

Not much different than how the NRO staff is treating Ace at the moment.

So sure, give Legal Insurrection traffic, great blog. I've been a regular there wihout incident since their Martin-Zimmerman coverage. But be warned something weird is going on over there, and Jacobson is not the kind of man he presents himself as.

    Not that I know of.

I had been under the impression that blue was used for the incumbent party and red for the challenger, which makes sense. But in researching coverage of pevious elections, that turned out to be wrong. There was no consistent color scheme between different networks in prior elections.

320 If Cruz and his voters are worried about Cruz vs. Beto, maybe it's time
to select a strong young Trumpist to fill his seat, so he can take the
one that opens up when RBG's Pike Chair trundle off into the sunset.
    =====

Not yet, please the Good Lord, not yet. Cruz has done remarkable things in committees (NetNeutrality, Global Warming, Judiciary, etc) and his influence is making life a lot better for ALL of us, not just Texas. He can lead the honest intellectuals (scarce as they may seem sometimes) and really hit where it counts in the Senate.

The man isn't even 50 yet, I think there is time.

321 "But in the 2000 election, the electoral map showing Bush states as red and Gore states as blue was shown night after night, and those colors became cemented in place."

Everything you said is spot on up to this point. I don't think tbey became cemented by coincidence, I believe it was a deliberate choice by the networks because some specialist advised them the subconscious mind responds more favorably to a flag colored Blue than it does to Red.

Interesting how before we were all on the same team and just swapped Red-Blue jerseys depending on who was defending this time around. Now we have tribal flags. That wasnt a coincidence either.

It's the post-modernist Marxists. We are going to have to wipe fhem all out. We cannot afford to keep letting them get up off the mat. We are running out of good men. Ever notice how the likes of Sydney Blumenthal and Fusion GPS keep turning up like a bad penny? That needs to stop.

322 ChemJeff left with the hounds baying for his head. He was being prickish sometimes, but if that were a mortal sin here, the site would be blank.

What a weird take. chemjeff wasn't being "prickish sometimes", he had become a tedious repeat loop about what awful human beings Trump voters are. The sanctimonious asswipe left of his own accord, after months of calling Trump supporters racists, because he didn't want to hang around the kind of alt-right knuckle-draggers who would cheer the election of such a terrible person.

Yes. Chemjeff had been a moron in good standing for years, but at some point he became fixated on the desirability of open borders, and considered anyone who opposed them to be racist. He got to be like a broken record on that point, and flounced right after the election.

And Im fine witb that, i was born on Usenet. But either let us troll back or enforce the rules you punish everyone else for breaking. Let us defend ourselves. Are we invited dinner guests to be abused at your table for your amusement? Then drop the highbrow principled act, clutching pearls when we spit back at your butt buddy.

Either toss out the brawler or let us fight back without being tossed out.

Tbe concept of equal protection shouldn't be a foreign concept on legal blog that clams to stand for Principle.

328 237 It was all about the money. Cruz was outspent.
He had to compete with big media, big money, corrupt politics. and Beto.

Want Cruz to do better? Find him a pot of gold. "

And that's straight from the playbook of the Consultant Class. Mo' Money! Mo' Money! Mo' Money!!!! Just give us Mo' Money!!!

How did Trump win while spending so much less than Hillary? IDEAS!!!! Connecting with the people through his IDEAS!!! Cruz sat back and did next to nothing while believing that all he needed was a couple more stupid Ads - WRONG! Winning today means going out and FIGHTING.

Cruz didn't have a single good rally in his re-election campaign until Trump came and gave him one. That's just incompetence.

Trump got all tons of free pub early on because the MSM was laughing at him, revelling in his campaign to fill air time with the hilarious MAGA shit show, unwittingly spreading his message. They never took him seriously enough until it was too late.

329 And honestly I don't enjoy being That Guy. I had a great deal of respect for Professor Jacobson and Ive been kickef like this many a time before. Although mainly from sites like Dem Underground and HuffPo.

But if we're going to call out foul play from sites like NRO, we need to be warned that some of our own conservative brothers like Legal Insurrection are no better.

Enjoy the site. Just be aware "they don't really believe in the things they lecture the rest of us about".

331 "even powerline unless you become nasty"

Not true. I was banned from Powerline for either

    1) remarking that Paul couldn't help but insert digs at Trump even in articles completely unrelated to politics, tbat he was becoming predictable

    Or

    2) that if the Marxists kept trying to get at our guns we were going to have to kill every last one of those mother f-ckers

I'm not sure which because I didn't even get an explanation. Although it would be amusing if #2. Congress critter can call the President a MF and John and Scott can write 500 word essays about, but don't you dare describe Marxist gun-grabbers as MFs on Powerline. Ahoy! LOL.

Anyways, my main point is that we spend alot of time decrying Patreon deplatforming, Twitter banning, FaceBook censoring, WaPo suppressing. But I've noticed a trend of conservatives doing the same thing, and not just to Lefty trolls but to our own people. And over simple criticism or disagreement instead of blatant vile trolling.

Look at how National Review is treating Ace. One of their staff steals his work, passes it off as his own, snd their Staff doesn't even have the courtesy to respond to his inquiries. Why? Because he's one of those sub-human deplorables? What does that maje us? Their kind will no doubt mock me for whining, but I'm only extending mercy - you know that recurring scene in the movies, where the Clueless Twat is about to get tossed off the bridge snd he keeps begging for a chance to explain himself but they don't care? This is the part where I will carefully listen to any explanation he gives...

Maybe it's because of our civil war with the NeverTrumpers, or maybe we've becone the abusive father who only beat our own kind because thats what we were taught by the Left. But it's not going to end well.

And I don't understand the lesson of our side's anti-speech cullings. Random permabans without explanation for mere the mere sin of sharp criticism teach me nothing. All they do is radicalize me further as I fewer and fewer venues to express myself. I am a former United States Marine. I can hit center mass at 500 yards with iron sites. I can build IEDs in my sleep. And I think society is much better served if I am allowed to express myself in writing or verbally.

332 "We are legion. Cruz lost, and Trump has been better than I expected. I can live with that."

Same. I worked (paid) for the Cruz campaign. I only supported Trump as a block to Hillary. Expected him to be Democrat Lite.

Its an understatement to say he exceeded expectations. He's been the most conservative Republican since Reagan.

Never been so happy to have been so wrong. We needed a Wartime Consiglierre.

So i dont know how i can back it up for you. Other than my word. Other than the fact I was loyal regular there for 8 years without incident.

My history and rep is known. Ive been "Fen" at Althouse and AceSpades since 2000. And Insty can show my disqus history undef Fen to prove i am not a psycho troll. I only post here as Fenrisulven because i didnt want to crowd Fenalon (im so mean!)

Fen's Law? "The Left doesn't really believe in the things they lecture the rest of us about".. Thats me, my creation.

So all i can offer you is my word based on my rep. And even then, you dont need to believe me, just be careful when you step in over there - Jacobson is not the honorable man we credit him as.
