"Yellow Jacket" Protests Cross the Atlantic to Mexico, Where People Don the "Chalecos Amarillos" to Protest a Weeklong Gas Shortage

Mexico's new president has shut down several large pipelines for distributing petroleum in order to combat petroleum theft by the cartels, I guess directly from the pipes, which he says robs Mexico of $3 billion per year.

But shutting down the main central hub of gas distribution means gas isn't being distributed much any more.

It's been almost a week since gas stations in the Mexican state of Jalisco started to run dry. Shortages have been reported in at least five other states and in the country's capital, too.

...

Mexico's new President and the country's state-run oil company have called for calm. They say there isn't a gas shortage -- just a change in the way fuel is distributed.

...

But as days pass, drivers' desperation grows. Family members take turns waiting in long lines for gas. Some comb social media for clues about which stations are open. Others have simply decided to leave their cars at home.

Below, video from France 24 of Mexicans protesting the shortages. A few Yellow Jackets are visible among the protesters.

I'm not going to translate it because it's mostly stuff you can get from the CNN article and obvious stuff, like someone saying, "The gas thefts are definitely a big deal, but the people are more important."

I tried finding an English language article that mentions the "Chalecos Amarillos" but no one seems to have written one yet.

57 I do sympathize with the Mexican President here, he's the first one attempting to deal seriously with a problem that all of the past Presidents have (*BEEN PAID OFF TO) ignored.

And the reason it's so hard to stop is that the cartels have underground hidden lines tapping straight into the main pipelines in which they just suck out as much as they want - it will take a lot of work to find them all and cut them out, especially when most of the Mexican Government is on the Cartel's side.

Much was made about Obrador being a leftist, but the cartels and their associates in the Govm't have gotten so strong and taken over so much already that the only way even a leftist can get anything at all accomplished is to go to war with the cartels. And it's a tossup who's stronger, them or the Govm't.

100 I see a similar attitude between the yellow jackets, and the first Tea Party organizers in 2009, even earlier.

A non-responsive, bloated government is what they are rabble rousing about. Heck, it isn't even a real riot! But their response is encouraging.

Just like the Tea Party then, and much of Trump's support now. Non-responsive, bloated government causing big problems.

But good news is coming!

When the shutdown hits 31 days, Trump can start RIF'ing the idled workers.

In another week, unless Chuck and Nancy Rosenberg agree to a partial wall (just 234 miles, according to new Texas Rep. Crenshaw), we will begin to see some of the unnecessary government shut down.

Then it will really start gettin' good!

111 There is something to it. The Cartels have a very big petro-theft operation. They tap the pipelines, run a convoy of trucks, deliver to in-network gas stations. Very tight operation, with plenty of bribe money to go around.

Pemex and the Mexican state (which owns Pemex, at least for now) lose, the cartels win big, the people who buy from in-network filling stations win (cheaper product, because it's stolen).

Shutting down pipelines to go remove and patch illegal taps (of which there are hundreds or thousands, depending on who you ask) disrupts legitimate supply and also (at least temporarily) cuts off the black market - meaning people pay the going rate for fuel instead of the cheaper black-market rate.

They're threading a needle. It's going to be ugly if Pemex/Mexico is successful at all, as this state of affairs is popular with folks who aren't Pemex (the cartels and people buying from them). Mexico let this problem get *really* bad and solving it - if it is solvable - is going to be nasty and probably bloody.

129 I guess the point of my prior comment is more that this isn't *perfectly* analogous. In France, it is the government directly and arbitrarily raising the price of fuel. In Mexico, it is the government shutting down supply to try to deal with the black market problem that is raising the price of fuel (both due to supply and - if it works - drying up much of the black market).

Once that's done, they'll arbitrarily raise the price to bail out Pemex, at which time the protests will have a more similar (though still quite different) basis.

Baker will also be ignored, just like the other dozen or so FBI and DoJ leaders that have been fired or demoted in the last year.

In other words, nothing will happen. Baker, like the others, are on the protected side of our government corruption, not the Trump side.

183 The future consequences of a cartel controlled Mexico on our border should be a National Security issue now. So much so that a preemptive invasion should not be taken off the table. "

Future consequences? The cartels already control almost all of the southern side of the US border. People in the States don't pay much attention to how f'd up Mexico really is. If we really wanted to stop those Immigrant Caravans, we'd need to pay the Cartels to do it, that's who's got real authority there, not the Govm't in Mexico City. Of course, then they'd just slit all of their throats, throw them off the side of the road, and tell everyone it's our fault, we told them to do it.

Posted by: Tom Servo at January 15, 2019 03:33 PM (Kpl3J)

184 They're threading a needle. It's going to be ugly if Pemex/Mexico is successful at all, as this state of affairs is popular with folks who aren't Pemex (the cartels and people buying from them). Mexico let this problem get *really* bad and solving it - if it is solvable - is going to be nasty and probably bloody.

Maybe when it spreads it will be, but not in France. France has a stupid law as of 10-15 years ago that *all* motorists must carry a high-vis vest in their vehicle in case they break down. It was unpopular and really resented by other Europeans when the cops would pull over foreign plates and hit them with fines for not having a high-vis vest in the car.

The French affair involves skyrocketing fuel prices due to stupid taxes. The yellow vest was an obvious choice - they are visible, everyone has one, the protest is related to motor fuels.

Exactly. Going to jail will NOT affect Cartel business.

David Skarbek talked at length about how many criminal gangs, including MS-13, are run out of the prison system.

And even if/when he's killed by a rival, someone else takes over.

Unless the assets are seized and heads are popped off, the Cartels will adapt and go on. Only a National government and National army can do it.

And I doubt they will.

(and hell, this is probably happening at several of them) First they got some of the senior staff on their payroll, and eventually got all of the guards and all of the staff on their payroll. After that, it was a sweet setup - cartel members could set up living quarters in luxury, conduct all of their business from inside the prison (which was out in the country), and still pretend they were "in jail", and even better for them was when they could use their connections to get some of their enemies out to do some time in their care.

Multi-Deported Illegal Alien Arrested For Sexual Assault Of 11-Year-Old In Texas

A 31-year-old man has been arrested for the sexual assault of a child, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

Jose Manuel Tiscareno Hernandez was arrested around 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Conroe, the release said. Hernandez began abusing the child when they were only 11 years old.

When investigators executed a search warrant at a Conroe home in the 400 block of Gladstell, they learned Hernandez was planning to flee to Mexico. Investigators also collected other evidence at another location on Friday, the release said.

Hernandez has been deported to Mexico multiple times, authorities said.

That's why 1867 was a good time to start. The slavery issue was settled. Canada had just gotten it's independence. And we had 3.5 million hardened combat veterans and massive stockpiles of weapons.

A joint war against the rest of the continent with a regionally and racially integrated army would have been a better version of reconstruction.

Well that's why ad homimen and appeals to authority are logical fallacies. Not because they are necessarily false, but because they don't support your argument or counter your opponent's. They're just to shut people up or intimidate in the place of argument.

....

I've worked with thousands of cons.

Most of them have rap sheets pages long, which include all different kinds of crimes.

Here's my best solution.

Most crimes are the result of drug use, either being strung out or trying to get $$ or items to trade for drugs.

You create open drug camps in very isolated parts of each state. Have an endless supply of every street drug available for unlimited use.

You have treatment counselors and medical staff working there. If they choose to clean-up and re-enter society you bring them back. If they stay and use until they die, that's on them.

Meanwhile back in civilization, crime drops exponentially.

Yeah there was a big push in the decades leading up to the war to get more states for the pro- or anti- slavery side. Slave states wanted more for them, so they'd have more votes in congress. Anti- the same. Every time a new stated wanted to form, there was a huge battle, even defining state lines in the process.
