Google Plans to Embed 1000 Reporters in Local Newsrooms

Yayyy.

CJR'S MOST RECENT print edition focused on local news, the backbone of an industry suffering from the steady shift of advertising dollars away from print, leaving newsrooms in crisis--bleeding staff, scaling back coverage, and grasping for solutions. A project announced yesterday at the Google News Lab Summit hopes to help address those concerns.

Report for America, an initiative of the GroundTruthProject, Google, and others, plans to place 1,000 journalists in local newsrooms over the next five years. Writing in CJR, the project's co-founders argue that America needs "a dramatically new approach at the local level--grounded less in the traditional commercial model and more on a reawakened spirit of public service among reporters."

...

As the program begins placing reporters, it will be important to ensure that the journalists chosen represent a diverse cohort, both racially and socioeconomically, that underserved areas which may not have an active local donor base are not overlooked, and that young journalists who participate receive not just initial training but support throughout their employment.

Google will now be arranging for the payment of its own cadre of "journalists" embedded in local news stations across America.

I wonder if the media will become even more pro-Google than they are now.

Oh well, it doesn't matter -- #MuhPrivateBusinessDecision and all that!

I've had DuckDuckGo running for a number of weeks now and the security precautions are quite nice. If you search for a YouTube video it will caution you that if you click on that link you'll be going to Google which will track and record your viewing. They provide an option to watch the video within their own safe confines.

As far as search results - nothing deficient in that regard. Comparable to Bing. First result between the two is almost exactly the same, time after time.

The Tech Companies, absolutely - here's why. Suppose Trump builds a wall, but the Tech companies retain their power and get a hard core prog like Beto or Kamela elected down the road. The instant that election is over, all wall enforcement is cut, the gates are throw open, and it will be like the wall never existed.

The wall, no matter how high it is built, will never be stronger than the party holding federal power at the time.

Look at facebook stock. Stories about evil tech is good journalism -- people like to read about how some new thing is going to destroy their world and there is a lot of conspiracy potential there.

So maybe they are afraid that some newsrooms will play to the audience and do stories about how creepy controlling big tech is.

I think of the stuff that's actually backed by some level of contemporary research. Like Clarke's use of the very earliest of ideas for a space elevator for The Fountains of Paradise.

The problem is that most of the people who know the science are awful writers. Kim Stanley Robinson is obviously someone who understands the geology of Mars and the potential efforts (thought of at the time) around terraforming, but the man can't write compelling characters to save his life.

For me, a lot of the movie's theme is about knowing. The cops 'know' who is going to commit a crime and when and they act on that. That plays into the idea that an omnipresent surveillance state is a 'good' thing...right up until an innocent person gets wrongfully accused. And even then, the only reason Tom Cruise's character thinks its bad is when it affects him personally, at least at first.

That moral struggle is what makes the movie more interesting to me as I think about it.

I mean, that's pretty much an inevitable conclusion. Pre-Crime dying will mean more guilty men get away. But it only ever took off because of an innocent woman being murdered, and once there was the uncertainty introduced, that in the right circumstances you can still have a choice, it becomes immoral to keep the system running.

Of course there's also the theory that Anderton never makes it out of his halo. I think that's probably garbage, but MR did start as a Total Recall sequel, and TR definitely has the "did this even happen" vibe in it.

And even then, the only reason Tom Cruise's character thinks its bad is when it affects him personally, at least at first.

That moral struggle is what makes the movie more interesting to me as I think about it.

That moral struggle is what makes the movie more interesting to me as I think about it."

The film took an old moral dilemma, one that all societies have struggled with, and cast it in a futuristic setting.

It has always been true that tightly run police states have much less street crime - Hitler famously made the trains run on time, after all. Put a government agent in every apartment building full time, pick up and jail anyone who the government feels is "suspicious" - it's been done many times. And the conclusion we've come to, in our culture, is that living that way is far, far worse than living with the possibility that people may commit crimes, even terrible ones.

When people have freedom to act, some of them will always use that freedom to do very bad things.

352 There's also an important moral issue in the movie that goes to the heart of the concept of Guilt or Innocence in western societies, back to Rome and even before. Is it a crime to Think Bad Thoughts, or is it only a crime to Commit Bad Deeds?

Even since the Enlightenment and the end of the Religious Wars, Western Society has come down on the side of Bad Deeds are the only things that should be punishable. (What is Heresy, after all, but a Thought Crime?) But other societies - the Chinese, for example, and the Muslim world - have never accepted that, and punish Bad Thoughts just as or even more harshly as Bad Deeds.

The Concept of Pre-Crime is a stand in for the idea of Bad Thoughts. The Danger in punishing those kinds of things, which we have understood up until now, is that if you allow the Government to punish people for what it thinks they will do, just like punishing them for what it thinks they think, then that Government has the power to crush anyone at any time purely on their own say so. And that is pure Tyranny, by anyone's standards.

I couldn't pay off my student loans from Columbia School of Journalism. I was desperate and Google made me an offer. They sent me here, to reinforce the local news, out here, in Trumplandia. I confess, I thought it would be daring, to bring enlightenment to these hunched-over Morlocks, to spread tolerance and diversity. When I stepped out of my Subaru I took a deep breath and immediately chocked on the scent of the slaughterhouse. My office, I learned, is in a rundown annex that I think was once a chicken coop. I then found that I was getting up at 2:30 am in order to interview farmers, the professors from some state cow college, and USDA ag officers for the morning farm report.

I thought I would change them, but I feel they are changing me. This morning at the diner I got a cup of regular coffee, black, and drank through two refills before I realized I no longer craved a non-fat soy mocha grande latte! I found myself saying "A-yup." to a question unironically! I may not be able to last much longer, my cynicism is fading. +++++++++
Possibly. Some currents against that, though. They have tried very hard in Sweden and even they're walking it back - it froze too many people (even there, where they love non-cash) out and caused serious blowback. The ECB has even formally walked back its "we want a cashless society" goal.

Beyond that, though, our (the US) unusual position with regard to currency *and* corruption might help keep that at bay.
1) Some foreign countries use our currency, and a lot of trade settle abroad in USD. If you can't cash it in - literally - that becomes a hard sell with a lot of consequences.
2) We pay for a lot of shady shit with pallets of currency. If that currency can't come home, or if people stop wanting so much of it because it is harder to convert it anonymously, we can't fund a lot of our shady work abroad.

I don't think for a moment that the government doesn't *desire* a cashless economy, but the risks might outweigh the benefits when most transactions are already cashless.

Well, even absent the idea of a minority report, he had a different experience than most criminals because he intercepted his own red ball. He knew he would commit a murder in 36 hours but had no idea why. Though I agree that, absent the minority report, he'd have found Crow, found the pictures, and shot him.

I am always amazed that modern producers seem to be unable to understand that - look back to the original Star Trek, for example - it wasn't popular because of the sci-fi, although that was fun, or the stories (some of them were awful!) It had a great attraction because it was built around 3 powerful characters that people liked and could identify with, and their interactions - Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. That's what all of the success was based on.

It's a generic term for "writing software." Software all starts out as source code in some programming language or another. Once you have your software source code, you compile it and then you have usable software (like a web browser, a video game, a database, etc.).

"Coding" is often a short-hand for "software development."

457 426 I suppose it's also kept vague because it makes the underpinning moral quandary a bit more difficult. We never find out if anybody else's minority report was valid because everybody else is just caught by pre-crime. It's an immoral system either way, but it's a lot worse if it was consistently tagging innocent people.

Which comes right back around and begs the question of if he was innocent. Actually he wasn't...right until the end, when he was. So Precrime was 'correct' again.

461 What's the big deal? These people will be embedded in organizations that conservatives all know and avoid. They won't be worse that the journalists already out there and the idiots who watch and believe them will be absorbing the same nonsense they've always absorbed.

I read something a few years back that Salon has almost never been profitable since it started in the 1990s, and yet here it is. Fascist orgs like google who have the means have always propped up these news outlets.

That's because it's like advertising. You lose money on paying for the ad, but you hope the propaganda *contained* in the ad will eventually earn you back your investment.

So people like Soros and companies like google prop these places up because the circulation is sufficient that they think the propaganda will eventually permeate the dense skulls of enough leftists such that it will benefit them in the end.

Of course they're not stupid - when circulation falls below a certain amount, you get:

This is the point. If you invert how investigations are supposed to work, then it all starts to make sense.

You're supposed to investigate an incident or a crime. You work your way from the incident to the person.

If you turn that on its head, though - in all contravention of modern Western norms and rules - you start at a person and work your way out to find an incident. We don't do things this way because people are innocent unless proven guilty. If you throw out those precepts, though (and we have already in some narrow circumstances - see Mike Flynn), then the only question that remains is "are they interested in me?"

Right now, the answer to that question is almost always "no." As it becomes normal to work this way, however, the threshold for a "yes" answer will gradually collapse. Right now, you have to be a major opponent of the deep state or have knowledge of their perfidy. In a few years' time, looking cross-wise at a beat cop will be enough to trigger an inverse investigation. Then your life is over.

When I was in TV school in the early aughts, one of the buzzwords going around was "glocalization." Disregarding the appallingly bad word, it was the concept of global media firms creating derivative versions of content for local markets - same message, same characters, same stories, etc., but tailored for local audiences in smaller countries.

This is the same concept. A local patina on the same old globalist message.

Wasn't "Mountlookatthat" on We Made It?

No, "Mount Lookitthat" was another planet, another human colony. A robot had said, sure, there are habitable places. So a slower-than-light ship went (to Tau Ceti, I think), and they were horrified to see the planet was like Venus -- "an eternal searing black calm," as Niven describes it. Then they spotted an enormous plateau the size of California that projected above the clouds and was the only habitable point . . . and someone on the ship goes, "Lookittthat."

In later stories the planet is also called "Plateau."

We're never told why We Made It is called that, but the main city is Crashlanding City, so . . .

529 Maybe they will be heavily armed so as to ensure the party line is being strictly adhered to.

Yesterday, as I was transiting DFW, I was looking for some reading material to pass the time flying. I had a copy of The Economist with me. Word of warning - DO NOT read it if you want anything on the United States. The Economist IS ENRAGED that the United States is not a one-party dictatorship. If millions of Americans were being massacred by police for even daring to vote Republican, and were being dumped into mass graves, a la Stalin's USSR, The Economist would not be able to contain their glee. It has good international coverage still, and I respect the fact that they wear their biases on their sleeves. What bothers me about them is that their editorial stands so wildly contradict each other and that they cheerfully embrace the doublethink. (Example: The Economist HATES U.S. police officers but at the exact same time hate, with a passion, the idea that American citizens have a right to defend themselves protected under the Constitution. That the police can be so augmented by an armed citizenry that police forces can become smaller, cops fewer and more professionally trained seems not to have occurred to them at all.) But anyways...

Just glancing at the fish wraps blew my mind. "GOP looking for an exit strategy" screamed the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The Democrat Morning Snooze (h/t, Pratt on Texas) had an article on a Dem superstar they hope will make waves in the Texas Legislature.

Local editions of Neues Deutschland. Or Pravda. All of them.
