45 A Two-Pronged Wulff-Amish Scythe Fly!

Tie it yourself (from "A Martian Boy's Life," 1922)

"First, select a live, healthy human. Holding the human by the torso between thumb and forefinger, insert the blade of the scythe into one--not both--of the human's calves. Insert the handle of the scythe through the human's back, above the waistline but below the sternum. Attach the line with a surgeon's knot at the point where the blade and handle meet. Set the fly in a field at dusk. Others will congregate. Then...strike! Pan-frying is best."

Did I ever tell y'all about the two pictures I picked up at the flea market last year? Reproductions of a couple American Primitive portraits of small children, a boy with his puppy and a girl with her doll.

Both just sitting on the floor right now, because I can't put holes in the walls of my apartment per the lease agreement and I don't trust sticky hooks to stay put with the weight of a picture and frame on them.

Kim Yong Chol, a former spy chief, arrived at Beijing's airport and was booked to leave on a flight for Washington with two other North Korean officials later in the day, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said.

A motorcade that included the North Korean ambassador's car and a Chinese car with a sign reading "state guest" could be seen departing from a VIP area at the airport.

Well, sure. I would agree that their formative years were spent getting their whims catered to, just as boomers were insulated from a lot of crap by their Depression-era parents ("I don't want them to know the hardships I suffered!!!").

And yeah, college has long been cynically sold as THE way to get professional success, which really oversells it.

I'll just go back to what Monty used to rail about...he hated parents telling their kids "you can be anything you want to be if you try hard enough." No, you can't. But somewhere along the line that crap became accepted wisdom.

189 I love the painting but find it disconcertingly dark. Don't know if that is intentional, besides the dawn thing. You could imagine that the joyful response to the lark's lovely song (it is lovely) as storied in literature could be tempered by a Solomon-like gloom about the meaning of it all as one heads out for a yet another day of sweaty, hard labor. (All is vanity.) On the other hand, the rest of the laborer is sweet.

I also bought a house at 29.

That's the other thing with the yuuutes of today. They scoff at the idea of buying a house. Cuz like buying like means you can't like move and stuff man. Now buying vs renting isn't always easy to decide. Sometimes renting is better. But in the long run, nobody gets rich being a life long renter. Yet for the millenial generation, the thinking is renting until you're dead is the way to go.

As a landlord I welcome that mentality, but for their generation it's gonna blow.

Hydro, you say? What made your precious gensets that you set into the dam complex? Also hyrdro? Wind? Pixie dust?

Speaking of wind, how about windmills? What forged your steel pylons? What mixed your concrete? What powered the train and truck infrastructure that delivered the damn things?

Oh, so solar? Is the mining equipment "carbon free?" How about those big ships that burn bunker oil that brought the panels to you? Well, I guess I have it away there.

Piss up a rope, Cuomo. Going "carbon free" means turning off modern civilization. And by "modern" I mean approximately the early 18th century. If you count burning lesser fuels like wood and peat, we can go back to the trees.

The civilization that made this asshat possible drinks carbon energy and shits out industrial goods at a scale inconceivable to your grandparents. All of the good things - ALL of them - come from delicious, high-density energy. And not just your phones and computers. How about your food and water? You really want to mess the two cornerstones of modern civilization (refrigeration and water treatment, and the industrial infrastructure required to make those two cornerstones possible)?

Hah, what a crock of shit wind power is. On top of being incredible inefficient (~80% of the power is lost in heat, through step-down transform) it also may be slowing the average surface wind speed of the planet. A new report says there are so many wind farms, that convection induced wind energy is being depleted.

Somewhere around here is variation on the scythe and cradle, and I can't remember what's it called. Maybe "rack" is in it.

It's old as hell and may date to my great-grandfather. Anway, it for cutting grain somehow and has a large "rack" to catch the falling grain stalks. Rather than let it fall on the ground, it gets caught on the rack. You lay it aside.

Americans who may not be federal employees are feeling the effects of the shutdown.

Over the last several years, phones around the country are ringing more because of robo-calls.

People are getting calls from telemarketers, bill collectors, and scam artists.

And the partial government shutdown, may be making the problem worse.

The Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission are part of the shut down.

So, there is nobody in Washington to administer the country's anti-robo calls rules.

And there's no one to warn Americans about possible scams that involve automated calls.

To make matters worse, if you want to add your number to the 'No Call List' or check to make sure your number is on the list you're out of luck.

That's part of the shutdown too.

Consumers are faced with a website that says the government is "unable to offer this service at this time."

Experts say the shutdown may be giving scammers and companies who routinely break the rules the upper hand.

I can remember the old timers talking about that. Long dead now, older than my 91 yr old father's generation.

Wheat was shocked out the field, waiting for the thresher, stationary thing set up. Shocks were brought to the thresher and piled up, where they were fed in.

The came combines. Pull-type. But no storage bins. Output was bagged. One guy drove the tractor pulling the little pull type combine, and the other rode on the back and sacked the grain coming out. You'd drop the sacks, 100 lbs, right in the field, then come back and pick them up.

That would be a job I'd have to soy boys do as well.

I'd love to see them react to all the dust along with heat and humidity.

Just them drop of heat stroke right in the field, then put the next soy boy on line until he dropped.

Those anti-robo call laws have never been enforced or the so-called "don't call me anymore" laws.

when I got rid of my land line I had a brief ending of the robo calls and unsolicited spam calls. Now I get tons of them on my cell phone and I can't refuse to answer if I don't recognize the number calling. Too many doctors and hospitals calling all the time on different phones.

I once took a deposition of a board-certified woman physician who had gone to law school, been awarded her J.D., and had taken the bar exam 5 times and flunked each time.

She was smart enough to become a doctor, so one could have reasonably assumed that she could become a lawyer too if she put in the effort. And yet she did, but she wasn't able to achieve that goal.

Sometimes hard work and persistence just aren't enough to get you there.

The Belarusian cyber-criminal known as Policedog online started hacking early on, and by the age of 20 he says he was earning $100,000 a month as a "carder", turning stolen credit card information into cash. By the early 2000s he was one of the leading figures in the Russian and Eastern European cyber-underworld.

In an exclusive interview Pavlovich, now 33 and with a 10-year jail term behind him, gives a rare insight into a community that has been accused of carrying out aggressive cyber-activity on behalf of the Kremlin.

While Pavlovich says he won't comment directly on the US election hacking allegations he does say it is getting easier to access government organisations across the world thanks to the help of new apps being developed every day.

356 I always took the whole "you can be anything you want to be" theme as the child-like simplification of a much harder concept to understand. That concept is more like "You can be anything that you want to be, for which you are willing to put in the requisite hard *and* for which you have the required natural talent such as intelligence, strength, etc. You can do anything you want to so long as you can do it because no one will stand in your way. There are no sclerotic rules, clerics or aristocrats to tell you "I don't care that you can do it and are willing to - you must not because I said so."

In that interpretation, "you can be anything you want to be" is a brief summary of the "American dream." In the other interpretation as a literal, you get the Handicapper General so anyone can be anything so long as it is mediocre.

Mine weren't that big, but count me in on the "I will be unhappy" point. From age 22-28, I managed to increase my income by about 75%. I increased my consumption (my lifestyle) by 0%. Every nickel went toward getting the millstone off my neck. I don't want to work for it twice, especially since the second time around it less efficient due to intermediation and for someone I don't know and with whom I probably disagree.

Start saving your known #'s as contacts. SHoul;d cut down some on the BS calls.
One of the new tricks is to spoof a number very close to your inbound number. Most people think it's someone from your office calling and will answer.
What sucks about the Federal No Call registry? You can only register private numbers. All commercial #s are, apparently, fair game.

384 Hi, sorry I had a phone call.

Monty's thought came to me as I was thinking about 30 yos being told all their lives that if they work hard enough, dammit they will get their $1,200 phones and $15 arugula sandwiches. And aside from what I think is that a fair chunk of those 30 yos are suffering more from inappropriate senses of entitlement than anything else.

Also brought to mind one of his stories of a lawyer in NYC who quit her job to run a cafe or something in Union Station. It was her lifelong dream to do it, and she failed miserably despite all her hard work. Because he said she was likely told all her life that all she had to do was work hard.

So I'd agree the constraints on that dream are missing more often than not. "Hey, you want to be a powerlifter, well don't let your 90 lb frame dissuade you! Work hard!" And kids are EXPECTED to take things literally and be obtuse and all that shit, so yeah messaging matters.

I would tell my kids "you can't be ANYTHING you want to be, but you can be MORE OF WHAT YOU ARE." Hopefully they won't turn out to be drunks.

395 Be anything you want to be by working hard....

For a while, back when, I was thinking of the Air Force Academy. Now, firstly, I didn't have the grades and had been the captain of no sports teams, but that's beside the point. I was in the process of assessment. One of the requirements is that you get your Senator (or whoever... I think it was Senator) to write you a recommendation.

I worried about my grades and extra-curriculars and I worried that it would actually be a good "fit" for me. But I never worried about the endorsement.

Later, I was talking about this to a classmate in college, a super sexy Greek fellow from Cyprus, explaining that I'd decided not to pursue it. What HE found utterly shocking was my attitude toward the endorsement. The idea that I thought that I could actually just send a nice letter with my qualifications and ask for an endorsement, completely Nobody Me, was something so far from his life experience that he thought I was nuts.

THAT is what it means that you can be anything you want to be if you work hard... you do the "stuff" you need to do. It depends on what you bring to the situation and it doesn't matter who your family is, where you were born, if you were poor, if you have "connections" or if you're a girl.

Interest rates blow up at some level of risk.

For example, to first approximation, risk goes as default rate. Say the default rate is 5%. There's a 5% chance the lendee will default. For every dollar you lend, you're going to lose 5 cents on average (for a large number of loans).

So you need to charge 5% interest just to make that up from those who do pay it back.

That 5% is the "risk premium" which you add in, or "price in".

But, the default rate itself is function of interest rate as well. The more interest you charge, the higher the default rate.

So, at some "interest free" default rate, the basic chance of failure, the interest rate equation will blow up.

That is where it becomes "unlendable". A similiar behavior results in "uninsurable".

451 There has got to be some sort of technology fix to prevent number spoofing.

I bought what's called a PBX, although I haven't programmed it yet. It'll only ring thru to me once the caller has pressed "1", for instance, "because your call is important to us!". The automated calls won't do that.

On the upside, contrary to common 'knowledge', old people smell better than young people:

Thus, three irrefutable facts to place before uppity hipsters:

A. I may be older, but I smell better

B. So far, I have outlived you

C. Wisdom (as opposed to 'knowledge'), being necessarily a product of age and experience, I am wiser than you.

I think it's funny that everyone on the left is all "Trump did this or that illegal to steal the election"

Willfully ignoring the fact that he campaigned like a bastard in all the places he needed to win. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Hillary was lazily gliding around California and Illinois running up meaningless popular vote counts, in between losing bouts with gravity.

461 Non stem College degrees to me only mean someone was able to complete a goal to get a piece of paper. Hopefully it helped them learn responsibility and other work skills. When I was reviewing resumes and doing interviews I would consider how long it took someone to graduate college and why.

463 College is a pretty giant waste of time and money. Posted by: garrett at January 17, 2019 11:01 AM (AU1m0)

Everything is relative, so in comparison to what? If your child is a talented engineer but hates organized classes, there are plenty of certification programs to do on your own time that lead to highly paid jobs. No college degree required. If, however, your kid is interested in lab work or something more cutting edge, college and graduate degrees are an absolute must-have.

If your kid is just serving time, maybe taking sociology classes or something, then I completely agree. That kid should join the military and see the world. Grow up a little, manage some people, maybe gain some technical skills, and he/she will finish with a little money in the bank for college (if it makes sense) and lots more maturity.

My kids have a PhD and three masters between them, and zero debt. But it took dedication, planning and hard work on every one's part to pull it off.

My point is you don't even need a marketable skill to benefit from working rather than continuing a useless (majority of degrees offered) 100k education.

Shit. When I went to college I could already build a house. Using not much more than a string a shovel and a hammer.

A feat which none of my architecture profs could have accomplished.

467 "You can be anything you want to be."

I always took that as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in action. We threw off that English idea that if your father and grandfather were day laborers or butlers, you had to be one too. Here a poor kid can rise as far as their smarts and their ambition can take them, assuming some bad luck like ill health doesn't put the breaks on it. It doesn't mean everyone will be president some day. But yeah, the idea got perverted into "Society owes you the life you want because you want it".

Would you consider them average?

Because they sound exceptional, to me.

The average person would benefit much more from real work experience than they do from college.

477 That field is... strange. While I admire the artwork I suspect the artist had never actually been near a wheat field except maybe in a passing carriage or train. Either that is a stony field with some sort of dwarf wheat, or the previous reaper only harvested 7 out of 10 wheat stalks in a semi-randomized scatter manner with near prefect mathematical precision.

Or perhaps the reaper man is walking through a fallow field with a few scraggly wheat stalks to get to the real field.

Either way, odd, at least for this guy who spent some time on a farm. This suburbanite is not claiming to be a farm raised kid, but that strange wheat just bugged me.
