A clever way to sign his work!

And yes, very photorealistic. When you enlarge the picture, you can see crinkly skin at the corners of the Irritating Gentleman's eyes. His beard and mustache look like real facial hair, and her gloves have a faint sheen like well-tanned, used leather.

The texture of his hat brim suggests the hat might be a straw . . . but then, why would the mournful guy behind him be wearing a fur hat?

Beware averages. Go to an old cemetery and look at the headstones - a lot of older people (fifties and above) and a lot of kids. If you made it to later pre-adolescence, you usually made it. The life span was crap compared to now (and we have good sanitation to primarily thank for our improvement, along with improved medicine), but few people died in their thirties or twenties.

The original title is "Der lästige Kavallier" btw. While irritating is a proper translation, lästig is a stronger word, and Kavallier is in the German language more akin to a wooer or ladies man. So the 'pesky gentleman' or 'the annoying gentleman' are almost better translations.

160 106 Beware averages. Go to an old cemetery and look at
the headstones - a lot of older people (fifties and above) and a lot of
kids. If you made it to later pre-adolescence, you usually made it. The
life span was crap compared to now (and we have good sanitation to
primarily thank for our improvement, along with improved medicine), but
few people died in their thirties or twenties.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 11, 2019 09:57 AM (I2dne)

I did some research on that a couple of years ago when we were debating raising the age for SS. (which we have already done 2 or 3 times BTW)

The actual life span has not increased that much since the 30s. But what caused the increase is better live birth care and fewer wars. Some countries to not call it a live death if within a year or more of birth. We do. The other thing is the death rate from heart attacks has decreased to about 30% of the heart attacks.

I do a lot of Ancestry.com. A lot of kids died, oftentimes in the first few months. Then a lot of people died in their fifties, probably when their hearts gave out. If you made it through that, you were around until your late 70s through 90s. And everyone had either a nuclear family member or a cousin die in the Civil War. Everyone knew someone who died in the Civil War, and there were a lot more women than there were men in the postwar years, meaning a significant proportion of the women of that generation never married.

As a young soldier boy, I was riding a bus, and on this bus was a matron who would not stop talking. She was directing her comments to the bus driver a few seats forward. I had the seat just across the aisle from her.

I thought the bus driver might be growing tired of the non-stop chatter, so I leaned over to ask the woman a question which then caused her to engage me in conversation. All I had to do to keep her engaged was nod my head, as appropriate, or perhaps another question.

This went on for a very long time, earning me a look from the bus driver in the overhead mirror. At the end of the journey, this nice lady gave me her address and asked me to write to her. (Knowing what I know now, I should have guessed that she was a cat lady.) She thought I was a very nice young man.

True story.

I think I like today's better. The other is melodamatic, which was the style at the time, so OK. But here the story is subtle, left to only three details, the black dress, the man's pervy smile, and the single tear in the girl's eye. By having the girl stare me in the face, I am drawn in, then I pick out the rest of the details and piece the story together myself. It makes it a more effective piece to me.

On the other other hand, I can see where others may like the other, for at least two reasons.

406 The reason we say that the acceleration of the collapse of Iran's economy is much higher than Venezuela is because it took two years for Venezuela's inflation rate to increase from 57% to 254%, but in Iran it took only five months.

According to Professor Hanke's calculations, Iran's inflation rates were 211%, 244%, and 268% on September 2, 3, 4, of the 2018 rate, respectively. That means, in just three days, the poor Iranian people witnessed a 57% rise in the inflation rate under the management of the Islamic Republic Regime.

Who said there were "no" sexists on the right? Or "no" racists? Who said the same about the left? Even if this was sexist (I am not at sure that it was), you have to ask whether it was *a* bigot (bigots are easy to find) or if that bigot is *representational* of the group. The answer on the new right is "no, it isn't institutionally bigoted." And you know it. You just suck.

I saw a guy get run over, or run into really fast. He went over the hood and onto the street. I went out and did all the Boy Scout stuff. Stopped traffic, yelled at someone to call 911, and then went to check on the guy.

Now, I was pretty sure he was dead. And I was bracing myself to touch a dead guy. Self, you're about to touch a dead guy. So I got ready for him to be cold.

It turned out that he had a pulse and was warm but afterwards I felt silly for thinking he'd have lost all of his body temperature in the thirty seconds since he got run over.

604 This painting really struck me. Not only does the young woman look a lot like me at a younger age, but the artist really captures the essence of being a woman (especially young, especially attractive) and having some dude imposing on your time and space pretty much every day. Yuck, I can feel the irritation and slight edge of fear all over again. I see the woman as being not only sad (mourning) and irritated, but also apprehensive. Her right hand is set in a defensive posture and she seems to be imploring the audience for a little help or sympathy.
