I was telling my dad last night that Trump's win broke the Clinton hold on the party. All those wild-eyed ideologues suddenly were free to be themselves. Before, the Clintons and their acolytes controlled the purse strings. Now, it's a free-for-all. Additionally, Obama was devastating for the party. His eight years, and Obamacare, gutted the party like a Tijuana hooker. As a result, the Dems who were left were often safe in deep blue districts. The more conservative Dems, and the younger Dems, were all from purplish states. Once they were voted out of the lower levels of government, there are now few people with 10-15 years of experience who could take over the reins. You have an aging cadre at the top, and the young radicals at the bottom.

There was a big re-org after they created the Department of Homeland security.
So INS is now Immigration and Customs Enforcement (they deal with exactly what it sounds like) and Customs & Border Patrol just patrols the border and ports of entry for exactly what you'd think they do.

The Left understands this, and so people like tfg and latin loopy lu are appealing to their constituency. The have very few old-style democrats who represent the working (producing) class because they know they are now the enemy.
The establishment Right, on the other hand, is confused. People like romney think maybe it is about race after all. Or religion. Or something, but he has no idea what.
By tweaking the language to producers vs. takers it casts everything in an interesting context. A blue collar worker and a business manager can both be seen as producers. They are the makers, the doer of deeds. I think Trump gets this.

I think there is something to be said for restricting the "distance from border" capability for *arbitrary* stops. Most people live within 100 miles of a border (international airports and seaports are also borders) and it gives the BP potential for really significant abuse should someone want to do so. This is a stupid and inane non-reason, though.

To be honest, I'm kind of with that proposal. I live in a border state. It annoys me to no end to get pulled over many miles from the border and get stuck in a stupid checkpoint where they say "are you an american citizen?" and I say "yep" and they say "okay, carry on." and I say "why the fuck did you set up a roadblock across an interstate in northern new hampshire you dicks?" (under my breath while I drive away)

Abuse is a strong word. But it's a huge annoyance.
Also, there have been some interesting 4th amendment cases. CBP stops a car, far from the border, does a border search, finds a bag of weed... is that admissible evidence? They had no probable cause to stop the person or search the car...
It's just much cleaner if this all happens at or very near to the border. When its 50 miles away from a border, it's much more... messy.
NH's Supreme Court has said "no bueno, guys. Bad arrest." But most states aren't as privacy conscious as NH.
Here's an article on the controversy that erupted last year at an immigration check point (with drug sniffing dogs) in Lincoln, NH -- an hour and a half from the Canadian border.

So let's say you overstay your visa, get arrested for a DUI, and the local cops arrest you.
ICE is who comes and gets you (theoretically) and brings you to immigration court (theoretically) where you are then deported (theoretically.)

I think a 100-mile blanket jurisdiction and the right to end-run "probable cause" for stoppages (e.g., checkpoints) is unreasonable and a giant abuse opportunity.
Obviously pursuits and the like are different, but the way it is structured now is excessive and has lots of bad potential.

They would cultivate several candidates, from their early years, because some would burn out, some would fade away, and the horses that had the right stuff would be there. Ready. And has no relationship with Penn State, which is not anywhere near an ivy league school.

I'm convinced she went to the College of Liberal Arts at BU. It falls into the second category and mostly requires you can pay the tuition.

Anna, if I saw it on the red carpet or on the street I would think they were smoking something, possibly. But context is everything. As dance costumes, and especially with the fabric in motion, the effect is quite lovely.
