Senate Republicans Not Happy With Mitt Romney's Grandstanding

Meet the new cuck, same as the old cuck.

Sen. James Lankford will occasionally take issue with President Donald Trump's tactics and rhetoric. But he's not sure what Mitt Romney was thinking with his biting condemnation of the president before he was even sworn into office.

"It kind of felt like the same thing Trump does to everybody, Romney does to Trump. Smack you, and then want to negotiate," said Lankford, a Republican from Oklahoma. "It is funny to me that while he was complaining about President Trump's personal attacks, he was personally attacking President Trump. I don’t know if he sees the irony in it."

When Romney heads into his first Republican Conference meeting later this week, he might face an awkward reception from many of his fellow Republican senators. Some are scratching their heads about why Romney ripped Trump in a Washington Post op-ed; others are angry about reopening an intraparty divide. And it could color how Senate Republicans view Romney over the long term, raising questions about his effectiveness in the GOP conference.

"Focusing on our political opponents that are trying to annihilate us and embarrass the president is probably a more productive focus, rather than just criticize what the president is, how he does things," said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the former whip who is running for reelection as a Trump ally.

Senate Republicans say that many of them have to run for re-election on a ticket with Trump in 2020, and see Romney's efforts to create a new NeverTrump Vote Out The Republicans campaign hurtful.

Although Politico doesn't mention this, Romney stinks, as he has always stunk, of rank opportunism and severely conservative lies, and he's probably appealing to Pierre Omidyar and Bill Kristol's other NeverTrump funders for a possible primary challenge in 2020. He may not be decided on that course, but he probably wants to keep his self-serving options open.

People ACTIVELY went out and voted for Trump - including many Democrats - precisely because of his message.

Yeah, I think she'll be around for a while, and maybe even someday be a senator from NY, but I have a hard time picturing her running for president or anything, especially since shes way too young to legally do so now, and by the time she's old enough to run, she'll probably have said and done enough stupid shit that the D party won't let her win the nomination (see: Sanders, Bernie).

But who knows?

172 Donald Trump is not my role model for behavior. He does not need to be; I'm an adult.

But he honestly tries his best to keep his campaign promises and succeeds quite often, which makes him heads and shoulders above the vast majority of politicians in terms of character, as pertains to their jobs.

Which is why, although I didn't vote for Trump because I erroneously thought he was a self-serving non-conservative phony, I now support him based on his actions as president. This is why I have no respect for the NT position.

Romney's idiotic op ed has finally revealed to me what people have been saying for a long time, that he is a sleazy opportunist. He may not use any cuss words, but I'm pretty sure, for example, he would have allowed the character assassination of Kavanaugh and dropped him like a hot potato. Trump +100, Romney 0.

I'm glad other GOP politicians are making their disapproval known.

He has to be seriously out of touch with the people and party he purportedly represents to have pulled that dumb stunt.

I doubt it - because he doesn't seem to want to. He could. If we've had a president in my lifetime who I think could issue a call to arms and launch a dictatorship, he's it.

Let me be clear on this: I think he*could* do it. But he *hasn't* and seems to be making no moves in that direction.

This is why I have said in the past that the Left ought to be thanking their lucky stars that Trump is a reformer and not a destroyer. I believe Ace did a whole post on the weird relationships of Liberal voters and their betters vs GOPe and it's betters.

Dems don't eat their own, unless it's a petty barb. But even then, it quickly vanishes. Think back to the comments about Pelosi and her bid for the gavel part two. So many people with the negative talk and then all the sudden, nothing. Crickets. She walks away with the gavel.

That's power.

The new divide is the Producer v. Taker divide.

The Left understands this, and so people like tfg and latin loopy lu are appealing to their constituency. The have very few old-style democrats who represent the working (producing) class because they know they are now the enemy.

The establishment Right, on the other hand, is confused. People like romney think maybe it is about race after all. Or religion. Or something, but he has no idea what.

What you take as proof that President Trump is a strict democrat, I take the exact opposite way. If he wanted to, he could very easily defy a national injunction against asylum terrorists or MS-13 child drug mules. He could crack down on the Federal Reserve for trying to sabotage the American economy. He could seize Facebook and expose their perfidy. He could certainly purge the DOJ and FBI for their many, many crimes. That would be the work of a hypercompetent grifter or standard issue demagogue, not a very patient man with his finger on the pulse of America.

The last election was so crooked I'm surprised anyone still has faith in voting. I don't think Trump is a great enough fool to prepare himself to relitigate 2016, as the Democrats are.

It makes sense that he tries to maintain a facade of normalcy and stability, until the center cannot hold.

I love my fellow Mormons, but I will admit that some of them do that smug righteousness schtick annoyingly well. Use their ability to follow the word of wisdom (no drinking/black tea/coffee) as a sign they are morally superior to the lesser humans that enjoy these things. (Meanwhile they have plenty of other food vices, like eating every Mormon casserole or home baked sugary treat known to man.)

Smug piety is not solely a Mormon trait, obvs. And those I love most in the church would never dream of doing that. But Mitt gives me that vibe at times. I bet it sticks in his craw that the POTUS doesn't drink or do drugs. Can't use that against him.

Here's a counter-punch idea: When the bill gets passed by the congress (and it will), hold a signing on TV.

Before signing the bill, though, sign an EO suspending Pendleton and then another laying off all the "non-essential" personnel who were locked out due to the shutdown.

Then reopen the government by signing the spending bill.

It'd get overturned by congress, but the terror it would spread among the Dems would be astounding.

356 Not sure how much credence to put into it but I ran into someone (facebook) who claimed to be a Republican strategist and to have known and been friends with Trump and also with Romney. Very stuffy about her credentials and how she "gets more votes" for candidates than other strategists. Was talking up Romney as a "real Republican" and "classical-liberal". Now, I never minded Romney much and am not sorry to have voted for him. But he's not and never was "conservative". Much like McCain he was the Republican candidate by virtue of being the most boring "moderate" can't-possibly-claim-he's-scary fellow available. Back when we were trying to put people that couldn't be lied about on the ballot and before we realized that truth didn't matter and a candidate's record didn't matter.

And then she talked about Trump's "bigot" problem that he attracted right-wing crazies, about how he wasn't loyal "to the party" and how the party was the most important thing. And then (because I brought the national gun registration up) went on a long rant about how this simple moderate thing was important and necessary and anyone complaining about gun national gun registration was a kook, after all, she's owned a gun her whole life and it's always been registered so what are you complaining about. And that these concessions were super important because above all else the Republican Party must not fail or the whole country would fail.

And you know... if she was telling the truth and she really is a high level Republican strategist... it would explain a lot.

The level of smug suggests that it might have been true.

But Romney drinks caffeine free diet coke.

I had a mormon friend in high school, even he couldn't explain this shit to me. He drank soda, but he wasn't supposed to, because caffeine is a drug, but the church won't stop him, because free will, but it was frowned upon, but Jesus drank wine, so that was okay, but only if it was home made, and only if it didnt get you drunk.

I was telling my dad last night that Trump's win broke the Clinton hold on the party. All those wild-eyed ideologues suddenly were free to be themselves. Before, the Clintons and their acolytes controlled the purse strings. Now, it's a free-for-all. Additionally, Obama was devastating for the party. His eight years, and Obamacare, gutted the party like a Tijuana hooker. As a result, the dems who were left were often safe in deep blue districts. The more conservative Dems, and the younger Dems, were all from purplish states. Once they were voted out of the lower levels of government, there are now few people with 10-15 years of experience who could take over the reins. You have an aging cadre at the top, and the young radicals at the bottom.

PDT jokes, in this video, about how he and Chris Coons often disagree, but that here--on the topic of stopping human trafficking (this law) and building a "barrier" along our southern border--the two are in agreement. And Chris Coons nods his head and smiles, bigly.

Cause Coons is a worthless prick and Trump can use hims as the figure head of a bipartisan act.

I'm glad someone found a use for that jerk.

461 FenelonSpoke, the no coffee and black tea thing comes from the vague wording in the Word of Wisdom, a set of revelations given to Joseph Smith.

They used to hold church meetings in the prophet's home, and his wife Emma complained that the men were spitting tobacco all over her floor. The prophet decided to consult the Lord about the use of tobacco, and not only did he get revelation not to smoke tobacco, but revelation on a lot of other food and drink related items.

The word of wisdom says to not ingest "strong drinks" or "hot drinks." That is it. This has been interpreted by church leaders, and the majority of the church, to mean no coffee, tea, alcohol. Some of the over-the-top pious Mormons also took it to mean no caffeine, and could be a real pain about it, especially when BYU banned caffeine on campus so it was taken by people as gospel when it was not. You can imagine their horror when BYU revamped their soda vendor contract a few years ago, and finally allowed caffeine drinks to be sold! Hahaha I laughed over that one. It was huge Utah news. The less pious of us had fun ribbing the more sanctimoniously anti-caffeine Mormons. (I am sure this change was done for money reasons, btw. College soda vendor contracts are lucrative.)

Because mormons eschewed tobacco before the health hazards of it were known, and tea before studies about tannins came out, some in the church take it to be a sign that we are blessed by true, new revelation from the Lord, therefore superior to other religious groups. Those people are of course idiots.

There are exceptions to some of these WoW rules for medicinal uses. I drink green tea for health reasons. I am sure some in the church would feel I am breaking the WoW by doing that. But in my temple recommend interview, I asked about drinking it, and they said it was fine. The person interviewing me drank it too! Everyone has their own personal standards of how they interpret the WoW. There are some big understood no-nos, but the rest is up to our personal interptetation after discussing it with the Lord.

Mitt, it's not a good look when the lying lefties display more loyalty to their side than you do to yours. Unless of course you are a leftie.

463 >>> The Deplorables are constantly being berated for simply voting for Trump perhaps Utah voters need to be reminded of their responsibilities should Romney continue to harm the Republicans' cause.

Romney needs to be reminded that a huge amount of his constituents in Utah ARE deplorables, and voted for Trump! If he is only schmoozing those living in SLC or Park City I can see why he has forgotten this.

This is the new hobby. He is too old to learn new tricks so he can only do what he's done all his life, dismantle things.

467 Bless my soul, but Mittens has some bad timing and crazy expectations for himself! Not even in office 1 week and he has to ankle-bite Donaldus Maximus and pose like he is relevant to the situation.

I am not interested in voting for him again either. The GOPe backbiting has got to stop before it does any more harm to the party, Trump, and the Republic in general.

468 The intelligence of the Utah electorate has cratered in my estimation.

469 He's an embarrassment to the state of Utah. He was better than the commie racist he ran against in 2012, but he'd have had to be pretty damned bad not to top that jerk. Let's hope the blowback from this idiotic stunt makes him see that we've had all the "maverick" crap we can stand and that trying to be another Arizona-type jerk will just make him truly loathed.
