The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Funny, I always thought (and was taught) that the proper approach for reporters was to be strictly impartial, and that opinion was the purview of the columnists and pundits. Frank Bruni: professional homosexual and bulimic, seems to think that is an antiquated technique, and President Trump should receive negative coverage, with the intensity of its cant presumably decided upon by our betters at the Old Gray Whore on 43rd St.

Too bad Bruni has no sense of the arrant stupidity and arrogance of his beliefs, because otherwise he might begin to understand why Donald Trump is President of The United States of America, and Hillary Clinton is desperately grasping at whatever relevancy is available by cawing and screeching at every camera in sight, and fanatically trying to revisit her and her husband's popularity by booking large venues and then selling dozens of tickets!

Strictly down-the-middle and unbiased is the only way to go, and for Bruni to suggest otherwise is disgusting. He should stick to food writing (he wasn't bad) and tales of his struggles with eating disorders and being gay (he was tedious). At least they will be topics he has some passing familiarity with, because the proper function of the 4th Estate is far beyond his intellectual capacity.

NYT Writer Tells CNN The Only Honest Way To Cover Trump Is To Be Negative

Stelter asked, “But this idea that news coverage of Trump is negative, is too negative, where does the truth lie there?”

Bruni replied, “I disagree wholeheartedly with that. He’s a singular president. He was a singular candidate. No one has lied like him, I mean at that altitude. No one has had the sort of ethical problems that he does, no one has had the areas of ignorance. To call that out accurately is to end up with a body of coverage that is unusually negative, but it absolutely appropriate to the man and the situation at hand.”

Stelter summed up, “So negative, but accurate.”

Bruni then stated honesty required the Times’ coverage of Trump to be negative, saying, “Yeah. Anti-Trump connotes driven by some sort of animus regardless of the facts. I don’t think we’ve been anti-Trump. I think we have been negative and I think that’s the only honest way to cover this president.”

Does this entitled pseudo-elitist even understand English? Do we need to start a Go-Fund-Me and buy him a good dictionary?

This is the usual ignorant article that carefully avoids discussing the real reason why Europeans are trying to arm themselves. There is not a single mention of Arab or Muslim immigration and violence in the entire article, but there are a few head-scratchers!
Gun Use Surges in Europe, Where Firearms Are Rare: Growing insecurity spurs more people to clear high bars for ownership
But Europe's shift has been rapid, and notable in part because of strict national restrictions. In most European countries, gun permits require thorough background checks, monitored shooting practice and tests on regulations. In Belgium, France and Germany, most registered guns may only be used at shooting ranges. Permits to bear arms outside of shooting ranges are extremely difficult to obtain.

Strict registration requirements don't account for -- and may exacerbate -- a surge in illegal weapons across the continent, experts say.

Many illegal weapons come from one-time war zones, such as countries of the former Yugoslavia, and others are purchased online, including from vendors in the U.S.
Maybe I am hopelessly naive, but is the dark web really a significant source for weapons, or is this just more journalistic bullshit?

11 When people are facing an existential threat (and normals in Europe probably are), then black markets get really creative when it comes to weapons. War zones? Websites? Whatever works. The black market is probably *preferable* to the legitimate one because the government in those places is in opposition to the people - and the people know what those registries will be used for.

"Dark web" or basement bazaars, I suspect the black market for weapons in Europe is going to thrive bigly.

16 I mean... when you take hating Trump as a given, it's true that negative coverage is the only honest way to cover him.

I really wish that we could dispense with this notion that media ever can actually achieve "fair" or "unbiased" reporting. Editorializing happens by necessity in what stories you cover and what you don't, regardless of if you give time to "both sides."

I'd much rather we take the the entire journalism profession down a few pegs by having them admit that they're all biased, and "objectivity" is a just a buzzword.

108 Trump Lie: "It'll be a big beautiful wall. Concrete slab along the whole border!"
Trump Truth: "The wall might be steel slat. Border Patrol likes being able to see through it."

Obama Lie: "If you like your doctor, you'll get to keep your doctor."
Obama Truth: "All choice of medical services is gone if you live in a rural area. If you're urban, you will likely be unable to afford anything and will be on medicaid and thus lose doctor choice."

Big difference here. One is Trump hyperbole and a technicality - a wall is a wall. The other was a deliberate lie when they knew the outcome would likely be the opposite to sell a giant new program with disastrous consequences.

But yeah, Trump is the dishonest one. No - he's bombastic and hyperbolic. He didn't "lie" about the wall - he's gonna build it (though the materials details will apparently change).

Remember Salena Zito's point. Trump's supporters take him seriously, not literally. His detractors take him literally, not seriously.

Only one side has survived. I suppose there's a reason it's been that way.

159 In Europe, people can literally walk, drive or take a boat from these war zones and be in people's back gardens in a matter of hours. The dangers have only been highlighted by liberal, left-wing governments importing these people en masse. Many Europeans now realize the government won't protect them, they have to have some magnitude of protection for themselves. That's why many of my friends and relatives there have told me they are battling the very restrictive laws on guns.
They really didn't see the need for them before this, and the previous bucolic environment somewhat support that fiction. But those halcyon days are gone now, and they're not putting that genie back in the bottle.
And yes, the "dark web" is a thing, but not as big as they are making it to be.

189 Where does this end?

French politicians accused donors to a defense fund for a protestor of being "accomplices" to his violence. The man, a former boxer, punched a policeman and then turned himself in for prosecution. The defense fund has irritated politicos, because it has become a tangible symbol of how pissed off protestors are at taxation and climate change policies.

The use of the word "accomplices" indicates politicians want to criminalize these donations, and may try to do so.

English Brexit protestors (on both sides) are also being subjected to police actions. Anger seems to be rising against government, on both sides of the channel.

241 French politicians accused donors to a defense fund for a protestor of being "accomplices" to his violence.

Anger seems to be rising against government, on both sides of the channel.

source for weapons, or is this just more journalistic bullshit?

I think it's journalistic bullshit buried in the wording:

Many illegal weapons come from one-time war zones, such as countries of the former Yugoslavia, and others are purchased online, including from vendors in the U.S.

Sounds like to me the "others" are really "not illegal weapons" that are purchased from vendors in the U.S.

The other possibility is that they are legally purchased and shipped to one country, then illegally sold and shipped to the end user. Either way, I'm wondering how ITAR restrictions affect this; a lot of items can not be sold out of the U.S. if the value is over $100 due to ITAR. That's not just guns, but also parts and accessories (e.g. optics).

372 @NBCNews
NEW: US Customs and Border Protection encountered just 6 immigrants on US-Mexico border in first half of fiscal year 2018 whose names were on a federal government list of known or suspected terrorists, according to CBP data obtained by @NBCNews.

"Just"?

That's only a dozen terrorists a year. Say a half dozen casualties per attack; that's only 72 deaths a year! Barely an inconvenience.

We're talking illegals on our southern border.
There shouldn't be ANY goat humpers.

Since there are, lock it down.

374 If it were just *western* Europe, that'd be one thing. But the EU and the Schengen area now embraces big chunks of the Former Soviet Near Abroad.

Though I will note that what might be political 'reality' isn't necessarily commercial reality - if you rent a car anywhere in "western" Europe they'd sooner you didn't go to Italy or Greece, and there's all kinds of thou-shalt-not in the paperwork about Poland, Czech, Slov(ak|en)ia, or any of the Baltics or Yugoslav fragments. I don't recall seeing anything about Turkey which was surprising.

A Venezuelan Supreme Court judge who once supported President Nicolás Maduro has fled to the United States and publicly denounced Maduro's re-election days before the inauguration.

Justice Christian Zerpa left Venezuela with his wife and two daughters, according to Miami broadcaster EVTV. Their destination in the U.S. was unclear.

Zerpa met a reporter in Orlando and told the outlet, "I think the president, Nicolás Maduro, does not deserve a second chance because the election he supposedly won was not a free election, was not a competitive election."

They refused to give him any loyalty and were insubordinate, long before the hurricane incident. In fact, Queeg went to the officers and asked for their help, pleaded, begged for their help. And they pointedly ignored him. That was one of the main points of Greenwald's criticism of the rest of the officers, if not THE main point.

Queeg was sub-optimal as an officer, but he was also a hardened veteran of the sea and combat, it's probable that he was pretty much burnt out, and that's the fault of the Navy for not recognizing the fact before putting him in command. But his wardroom had an OBLIGATION as commissioned officers to respect his rank and position and to carry out his orders to the best of their ability. And they refused. Not because he was incompetent, but out of butthurt because Queeg was strict and they were used to slack discipline.

378 Played a charades-like game at a big family gathering recently. Write some recognizable peoples names on little sheets of paper and stuff them all in a big bowl.

Our Bernie-bro nephew got Christopher Columbus and took the occasion of the game to give us all a little mini lecture about how Columbus wasn't the first.

And of course you cannot disagree or even discuss. Nephew is a high school teacher in a private boarding school teaching environmental science. Probably like a mini Evergreen.

A part of me wishes I'd have responded with a rant.

OK, so Lief Ericson. So who cares? I think your underlying point isn't that the Nordics were first, but that it's racist and patriarchal to honor the white guy that brought on the destruction by either the sword and axe, disease, or enslavement of tens of millions of little brown people.

In 1491, the continents of north and south america were lightly-peopled with humans living a stone age life, with no 4-legged animals for domestic use larger than a llama. They were essentially 10,000 years behind, and the advanced folks on the rest of the earth with their guns, steel, ships, warhorses, palaces, and cathedrals were beginning the arc of expansion via exploration and colonialization with Columbus the spearpoint.

So we recognize him for that. We name things for him. Would you have us dishonor him instead?

Should we tear down his statues? Re-name Columbia U for maybe Che?

If it hadn't been the Spaniards, then who? And what, given the times and the mores, what would have been the alternative outcome?

Hawaiians weren't going to open up two new green continents and bring only the light touch of grass skirts and beach campfires, leaving the natives alone. The americas and their peoples could never exist going forward as some stone age theme park for the rest of the world to just visit and admire.

381 If Trump truly were the tyrant they pretend he is, and if they really feared that Democracy was on the brink of "Dying In Darkness" and that they were engaged in a holy cause to save the world from a ruthless madman, then they would not be hurling their polemics at him in between car commercials and network promos for soft-core porn programs on international TV; they'd be in dingy basements cranking out handbills and pamphlets in the dead of night on antique printing presses while their comrades keep watch at the cellar door, ever alert for the sound of police whistles and jackboots.

What a gang of infantile self-fabulists these Indigo Children of The Press are.
