Netflix Revives Early 80s Muppet Bomb "The Dark Crystal" As a Series Because There Are Literally No Ideas Left

I tried to find a non leftist news site to link here, but Google keeps those way down the search list now.

So here's NBC. Google pretty much forced my hand.

At some point in the near future we'll see the last actual New Thing the entertainment industry ever created. After that, it will just be reboots of old things.

Oh, and the press is now heckling Sarah Sanders:

Time to just cancel that. Let them eat silence.

Open thread.

14 Dark Crystal has had a pretty good cult following over the years. In terms of remakes, it is the most out there because there is nothing else like it. I can appreciate it for that at least as opposed to a Brady Bunch remake, Chips remake, etc.

35 I can only think of one reason why Trump would back down on the shutdown. Trump has more to lose by backing down than sticking it out.

Unless the one thing came to pass, that turns the shutdown into pure downside for Trump... and that would be if the GOP caucus informed the White House that they'd join with the Dems for a veto override.

Before we get too far down the 'culture is just a retread' path- how many actually new stories are there or have ever been?

Most of them revolve around love. Boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love. Some Problem. Resolved in some way.

The best stories are not usually all that original in general structure, they just put the story together in some new way that resonates or we like the way the characters are written and or acted.

Posted by: Mr. Peebles at December 18, 2018 07:41 PM (oVJmc)

115 I think all the writers in H'Wood have been poisoned by Trump Derangement Syndrome and are unable to get their creative juices flowing.

That and all the restriction there now are on what the movie should 'say', who can star in it (black character with black actor etc.), no cultural appropriation, no xxxx Face actors or characters, no masculinity, limits on the enemies (no muslims).

And all sorts of other limitations placed upon the writers of new stuff.

So they revert to something that was saleable some time in the past but even that doesn't work well anymore because of those self same limits they demand be contained in even a reboot.

They've painted themselves into a corner where they can only produce crap that most ppl won't want to pay to watch. And when they do produce something that will sell, they are shut down because it doesn't have the limits imposed on other stuff. Like Gosnell was shut out of theaters just because.

I wonder if the media and movies will all implode at once. Many of them are connected to the same umbrella company and if enough of them die off, the whole edifice may crumble.

I got a new one. It'll be a sitcom in which the main topic of jokes will be sex. I mean we'll mix in some fart jokes or whatever, but it'll mainly be sex jokes.

Maybe it'll be a rich guy whose poor brother and son move into his house on the beach. Or a couple of waitresses. Or a group of nerds. Whatever. The important, new thing is that the plots and jokes will revolve around getting sex.

It's fresh, it's new, and yes it's risky. But with something new there is always risk!

Somehow this subject came up today while I was paying for my purchase, and I had to know, who buys these cookies? Apparently these are a 'thing' with people planning bachelorette parties. The inference was that they only need the boy cookies if you know what I mean, nudge nudge wink wink.

The best stories are not usually all that original in general structure,
they just put the story together in some new way that resonates or we
like the way the characters are written and or acted.

I grok what you're saying. I have this conversation with B'Gal pretty regularly where she points out that reboots expose allegedly good stories to a new generation, which I can sort understand. Right up until I realize that if those young skulls full of mush had any sort of education, they'd have an appreciation of the true classics in literature, art and cinema.

Every little gift shop had multiple items featuring the notorious RBG on them. T-shirts with RBG pumping iron, knee sox with her face on the front, coffee mugs extolling RBG's choice of fortifying beverage. And it was pix of RBG from around 40 years ago, no joke.

I have been trying to think of which stories or movies I have watched in say the past 10 years were original.

John Wick- old fashioned revenge flick which most of those can be looked at as a Count of Monte Cristo.

Tolkien is probably the closest with the anti-quest type of thing. It was not to find the magical macguffin, but rather to destroy it.

I don't know about that but he's putting in a good effort to solve some problems.

Posted by: freaked at December 18, 2018 07:26 PM (UdKB7)

What I meant (should have clarified), is I thought Trump would solve our problems because he clearly does not go gentle into that Deep State night, and he would actually FIGHT, instead of GWB, etc doing Lib-Lite with more government assistance shit like the prescription drug plan and 'compassionate conservatism' and getting slagged by the Obamas, only to offer Mooshelle gum on a regular basis.

I mean, who would be super nice to those assholes? They took a nice shit on the Constitution, and made good inroads in destroying the greatest nation ever to grace this planet. But no, GWB has to 'show he is a better man' and be friendly. YOU DO NOT MAKE FRIENDS WITH PEOPLE WHO HAVE BETRAYED THIS COUNTRY. Period.

So I thought with Trumps election, we'd have a juggernaut to get some stuff done for the republic, instead of seeing it get ratcheted back to more liberalism. But I didn't count on the perfidy and depth of the Deep State entrenchment. It actually makes me unutterably sad.

239 I think all the writers in H'Wood have been poisoned by Trump Derangement Syndrome and are unable to get their creative juices flowing.

Posted by: jakee308 at December 18, 2018 07:41 PM

Partly. A lot of it has to do with how hollywood operates now. Good writing is not a priority anymore. Hollywood just doesn't have the patience for the time it can take to perfect a script. Nor does it want to allocate it the required budget.Even if there's a screenplay that has already had years of work put into it and should be worth it's weight in gold, they pass it on in an act of nepotism to a hack for "improvement". He gets the credit, a large chunk of the bucks and ensures that it has some "urban" appeal, lots of shiny things and planty of added scenes that the director can use for shaky cam action and insipid dialogue. It can still be done and sometimes is... but it's rare. The discipline is gone.

Exactly this! I thought, ok we'll have a few days or weeks of lamentations and then we can get on with the transfer of power the way it's been done for over 200 years.

This treasonous coup, with the deep state in the government, the media, and most of the republicans themselves, well it just never occurred to me that Trump, his family, and his administration would be criminalized the way they have been.

Draining the swamp is hard when it's the gators themselves who guard the plug.

254 The Deep State is rubbing our faces in it now.

They're saying there's nothing we can do because they can rally the bureaucrats which is what millions of willing minions to do their bidding and all under cover of law?

They've revealed that it's not the Dems and Media that are the problem with the country and countering them won't help. The force we are up against is infested in the very fabric of the Government.

They've thrown down the gauntlet and declared to us the only way to take the country back will be to eliminate the government on a wholesale basis.

Since that's unlikely at this point there is no further point in struggling against what we now know are the real rule breakers and deal makers.

The only other option is succession.

327 With the Deep State having a firm grip on the reins of Law, it is next to impossible to root them out by normal legal means.

They control the courts, the prosecutors and the enforcement arm.

There is no way for even an organized group to tackle that degree of poison.

I think everyone thought they were localized in another part of the Government. We never imagined it would be those at the pinnacle of law enforcement that would take over the country and do so with glee.

They've had since World War II to perfect their positions and the means to thwart any restructuring or investigation.

They've been at the heart of every investigation ever done and have twisted the outcome in their favor.

I'm sure they've done ops where they've planted evidence so as to impugn the reputations of those that posed a threat. And also to put those they feared in prison.

And by passing the so called 'Patriot Act' we handed them all the tools they need to make their hold on everything complete and unassailable.

I'm just surprised they haven't held a press conference and told us who our new leader is and how the government will operate openly in the future.

The original Star Is Born was released in 1937, staring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. Filmed in Technicolor, produced by David O. Selznick, and directed by William Wellman, it's a real scathing look at Hollywood during that time period. An industry that sucks people into it's glamor and stardom and then, spits them out. I have a Super 8mm sound print of it I bought back in the mid 70's. Worth a look. No music, straight drama.

479 Rewatched Sword and the Sorcerer (the Rifftrax version.) I always remembered the sword as being cool, but there were a lot of trick swords in that movie.

But, gratuitous nudity, hot female lead. Lee Horsley. Not that bad of a movie. Just cheesy, which is on the box.

480 414 Really we need WWIII or CW 2.0 to give the screen play writers some new material...

Posted by: sOME mORON at December 18, 2018 08:41 PM (ICWiF)

Nah, they have a lot of WW2 material to mine. For example, a woke remake of "The Sands of Iwo Jima" with the John Wayne role played by Leonardo DiCaprio, as a closeted gay, who keeps the troops he'd like to screw from danger, and giving the ones who suspect he's gay all the risky assignments in hopes they are killed.

Poster tag-line: Who's more dangerous to Sgt. Stryker - the Japanese or the homophobic Marines in his unit?

When the Netflix executives mention that that was 'technically' against the law...well, then they need new Netflix executives.

570 I remember it being garbage. Shocker they want to remake it. All these people want is a pay day, the art is irrelevant. If I hear one more time about movie "tent poles" it will be one time too much. What happened to just making a good movie?

When did someone last make a decent stand alone movie like Jaws, Rocky, or Raiders? Sure all three kept going with the franchise but did they ever even come close to the original? When was the last time there were just good fun movies like Crocodile Dundee or Romancing the Stone? At least those movies last and still give enjoyment.

I guess there are people who think franchises are great and the superhero/zombie/absurdist genre is great, and I hope they enjoy it. But the fantasy if ruined a bit when you know that a studio plans 5 films from day one and they purposely put in as little dialogue as possible to exploit the foreign market. To me, movies just don't have the same impact. But that might just be an age thing.

580 The government budget is $4,094,000,000 they can afford to build the wall on the tax money they've already collected without needing anyone's donations.

Except 86 percent of that is on auto-pilot. That is, if Congress never convened again, 86 percent of the federal budget would automatically renew with a built-in increase. No budget or vote required.

Its the remaining 14 percent that is what all of the fighting is over.

594 The sad part about it is the Mad Martigan character is a good, solid character- and I thought Val Kilmer did a great job with it- but the rest of the movie feels... shallow.

I agree, him and his character had one wonderful feel, the little people had another feel, more serious, and the rest of the characters had a third feel of being more faerie tale.

If they'd picked just one of those and stuck with it I could have even put up with Lenny and Squiggy the faeries. Instead it was all over the place and while I like Warwick Davis okay he couldn't hold a movie as the main character (Billy Barty was more charismatic "The bones tell me nothing!").

One of my hopes with the rise of Amazon Prime and Netflix was that we'd see a shift, with more short series and such that would allow writers and directors to actually tell a story without the constraints of a movie, or the need to fill 22 episodes for a television series. It has not turned out that way, I think.

Corriea's stuff is not bad. MHI is a series that epitomizes: not heavy, just fun.

Brandon Sanderson's stuff is good, but odd. He writes so much different stuff though, that by my calculations, I will be long dead (and so will he) before he finishes his big series.

Jim Butcher's Dresden Files is... getting long in the tooth. I liked the beginning of the new Cinder Spires series, even if it felt just a bit like a safe beginning for a new series.

651 I just watched DC Cab for the first time a few months ago. It was garbage, but somehow entertaining garbage. Couldn't be made today. Way un-PC.

I always admired Heinlein, because he did both. Some stories were small, some were big, and they all tie together.

I always thought Methuselah's Children would be a nice concept for a movie..or series even.

653 Yeah Dresden Files is writing its self into a corner. He started out great with an interesting setting and concept, but like a lot of authors kept snowballing making every story mean more and be bigger and things got worse and the scope got more epic. And lost his way.

654 I've only heard of it in cooking terms .

Consider yourself blessed.

It is cool someone else knows the film. It is my go to obscure bad movie reference. Most have never heard of it.

656 DC Cab has a good Irene Cara song. That's about the best thing I can say about it.

657 Probably has to do with first seeing it at a young age, but I still enjoy the Dark Crystal.

Good call. It was terrible. I guess some like it for some reason. A few of the actors became stars later I guess.

660 Dark Crystal is a classic. It's absurd to describe it as a "early 80s muppet bomb."

It may be all factually correct, but it is still completely misleading. It's like describing "It's a Wonderful Life" as a "schmalzy bomb from the mid 40's."

As for Sarah Sanders, don't cancel it. Use it to punish bad behavior. There are countless no-name journalists and low-budget outfits that would jump at the chance to be briefed by Sanders. Kick out the misbehaving and lying bums and talk to outlets and reporters that try to get at the truth and can behave.

661 "Age of Resistance". Hm. So the Skeksis' are now either allied to, or ruled by, The Dark Lord Trump, huh?

662 I'm glad (maybe not so glad) to hear that I'm not the only one who can't get just about ANY conservative sites on Google searches! I'll even try and search a topic that just screams out sources like Breitbart, or heck, even Fox, (closest mainstream conservative leaning sites I can think of now) only to be directed to Vox or Huffington Post.
In all seriousness, are there ANY less left leaning search engines out there???

663 Here's an idea for any aspiring filmmaker looking for new ideas:

Walk into an American Legion or VFW, and spend a few hours gabbing with the vets.

You'll have enough fresh, interesting ideas for a lifetime of film.

Or if you don't want to actually get off your butt and out of your office, just google "Medal of Honor citations"
