White House Suggests There's a Lot of Wiggle Room in $5 Billion Demand for Wall

Blink.

Eh, what a cuck.

This isn't all on Trump, obviously. The Establishment Party in Power still hasn't gotten it through its head that we are tired of their barely-disguised open borders policy and we're not going to accept their bullshit about "virtual fences" any longer.

"We have other ways that we can get to that $5 billion that we'll work with Congress," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told Fox News on Tuesday morning. She added that the Trump administration could support $1.6 billion in border security funding proposed by Senate Democrats, as long as it can "couple that with other funding resources" to get to $5 billion.

She added that "at the end of the day, we don't want to shut down the government. We want to shut down the border." Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi have cast the potential lapse in funding as the "Trump shutdown." When Pelosi goaded Trump into an Oval Office fracas last week, the characterization appeared to irritate the president.

I don't know what alternate funding sources she means. I've heard claims that Trump could direct the military to use its funds for the wall, but that sounds completely wrong.

Still, Trump himself has not weighed in Tuesday on how much money he would accept. As always, a comment or tweet from the president could trample on the message administration officials try to send.

In proposing $1.6 billion in border security funding, Schumer has said it would go to building new or repairing existing fences, rather than the wall as Trump has proposed it. The White House appears to want to claim that funding as "wall" money to promote a victory.

But maybe this is the alternate source of funding they mean: Some guy calculated that if each of Trump's 63 million voters donated $80 each, they'd have the five billion needed for the wall.

But then, that's not the full wall; that would be the $5 billion sought this year for it.

Still -- it's something.

I'd buy that for eighty dollars.

His presidency is effectively over without a meaningful wall. The half-assed partial fence they're currently building is not what won him the election.

59 Ace, there many ways to interpret this. One, Trump does this to spike the drama and evoke an outcry from his supporters, thus setting up a loyalty circle when he agrees with them. Two, he is actually setting up Nanzi and Chuckie to start dealing and discussing a deal which upsets their base. Three, he is fucking with Nanzi's head while she is trying to become the next speaker. Four, he wants to highlight that Nanzi, Chuckie and all Dems are against Border Security that works. Five, and most likely, he is trying to figure out if he is facing a Banana War with the Dems or War War. If its War War he will take the offense.

147 The problem with the borders is not the wall (or lack thereof) but with the utter lack of interior enforcement and the siding of our courts with the invaders.

A wall is totally meaningless without interior enforcement and without the ability to seriously militarize the area. Of course, if we could militarize the border area (as a national border with a country that has been committing acts of war against us for decades) then we wouldn't need a physical wall, anyway.

I don't care much for the wall. I care only about interior enforcement and having our border area be treated like the serious border that it is, with aliens and people on the other side having NO RIGHTS, at all. That is how things are supposed to be with the whole nation-state concept.

169 I don't care much for the wall. I care only about interior enforcement and having our border area be treated like the serious border that it is, with aliens and people on the other side having NO RIGHTS, at all. That is how things are supposed to be with the whole nation-state concept.
Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at December 18, 2018 04:03 PM (ndSD+)

Yeah.

I think the biggest single change that would turn our whole immigration situation around immediately would be to lower the amount of due process needed to deport someone.

The left does an amazing job at clogging up immigration courts.

There are two immigration cases involving Chinese nationals that could be overturned that would change that in a second. I forget the case names though.

170 It's simple. Trump's Signature Promise is building the Wall. If he builds it, or it's very well into the process of being built--he get's re-elected. If he doesn't, the very people who prevented it from being built will run around crowing that he failed to build the Wall overdo it so much that the people will see that Trump was sincere--but that everyone else was not.
And he still get's re-elected.

179 Here's the deal: I've never supported the idea of the wall (though I voted for Trump). I have reasons for this, but they're not important, unless anyone cares to hear them.

But, I want that wall built, hasta pronto - and the reason is that the voters who won the election by and large voted for Trump because they damned well DID want that wall.

I am SO sick and tired of our government flatly ignoring the will of the American people. I've had it up to here.^^^

If the wall is possible to build (it is), does not violate the Constitution (it doesn't), and can be paid for (it can), then these people need to suck it up and do their damned jobs whether they like it or not.

Maybe it's just me but when he joined Van Halen, the band changed and not for the better. "Why Can't This Be Love" and "Dreams" are not rock and roll. They're easy listening turned up.

If you like easy listening, fine. I let folks like what they want to like. But watching a front line rock band turn into something weak and limp just irritates me.

I know, it's an old story. Happened to Queensryche, to Kenny Loggins, Phil Collins and an infinite number of bands.

Spotify is great.
I think the problem is the audience and the market is made up of a million pieces. What I mean is, back when radio was king, they cherry-picked the most commercial songs and that's what listeners got--and out of those songs, some songs became hits that everybody knows. Now you can get literally all kinds of music, but it's tougher for anything to make a dent in the public consciousness.
Similar with TV. Back in the '70's, you watched The Six Million Dollar Man or Happy Days --AND SO DID EVERYONE ELSE AT SCHOOL. Today, there's a zillion things to watch.

271 Don't think it's as simple as "it's a security issue, he can order the military to do it". In fact, it's not remotely that simple.

Anything not covered by appropriation from Congress would fall instantly as an Anti-Deficiency Act violation.

The alternative there is to "reprogram" appropriated funds. Been a while, not sure exactly what the limits on that are, or whether congressional approval/acquiescence is required, or at what level (used to be funding below a certain number could be reprogrammed, within activities covered by the same appropriations bill, with just notification).

Beyond those almost certain game-stoppers, there's the fact that (like most of Trump's accomplishments so far) any project done through fiat could be stopped within 15 seconds by the next president. And though such concepts really do seem completely quaint and irrelevant now, it would stink of illegitimacy (major political issue where a president cannot get Congress to agree, so he does it anyway), which would make ending/reversing it later politically much easier.

The failure of the last two years, IMHO is ALL on the GOP. Trump has done incredibly good things both from a policy standpoint via the EO and of course tax reform, and at least Gorsuch, as well as the intangible of overturning the tables of the moneychangers in the DC temple and exposing the corruption for all to see. That hopefully starts the process that changes things. By however that happens.

But for God's sake, don't read the fucking internet history of it -
"the world" raised the funds.
And when they went to build the pedestal they discovered unexpected vaults
where it was to be built that were meant as fortification against "tanks and bombs" - in 1884.

I just can't.....my God,why are we bothering to try and save these fucking ignorant savages?

324 Why would I pay more money for a wall? I already pay enough in taxes.

To be honest, as much as I hate the way our borders are dealt with I am highly unlikely to be directly impacted. There just aren't that many illegals running around in my hood.

If those who have to live with this shit, and in California I mean that literally, won't support using tax dollars to protect their homes and they want to live with the gangs, the drugs, the disease and poverty that it brings to their neighborhoods then have at it.

But I'm not setting up a second tax system to pay for stuff the government already gets plenty of my money for.

The irony burns. Once you have the problem, it becomes immensely more difficult to fix it. Those illegals and their citizen offspring, become a voting base that brings in more of them. They call her name at seven thirty

Then I walk down to buy her flowers
And sell some gifts that I got
...snip...
As weeks went by
It showed that she was not fine
They told me son it's time to tell the truth
She broke down and I broke down
'Cause I was tired of lying
Driving home to her apartment
For the moment we're alone
She's alone
I'm alone
Now I know it

366 Visa over-stays are a serious issue, but not the biggest one - and there *is no* "biggest one". They're all important, all easily addressed, progress on all would be very synergistic. Border barriers address completely different problems not involved with visa violations.

And "internal enforcement" doesn't even address everything. Barring a level of enforcement that is unlikely to inconceivable, *even magically assuming* "sanctuary" lawlessness is eliminated (um, it's expanding).

But observing even this crowd discuss the topic perfectly illustrates exactly how we got here. Doesn't affect me directly/tomorrow (this is behind many ills, including the continuation of the O-care disaster). Oh, I'll take this vs. that (this and that BOTH are needed, and easily accomplished if the effort were made).

And pooh-poohing the darkest forecasts on this situation ignores reality. Last month was the record for illegal migrant families exploiting what is essentially a fake-asylum Golden Ticket to illegal migration. The "Trump effect" disappeared from general illegal cross-border activity months ago. There will be no asylum law fix (there MIGHT be a judicial fix for the absurd ruling blocking implementation of Trump's emergency regulatory fix). There will be no real barrier where there isn't already. Mexico clearly got their USMCA without being forced to make a deal on illegal mass migration.

Damnation is good, but being mellowed out all the way through it's an outlier during that period of their career.

The ironic thing is that the decrease in watching the NFL, and the decrease in attendance at games, will eventually mean the salary cap will peak, and then decrease. Ratings are still down around 20% from 2 years ago, and many stadiums are half-empty or worse, with a quarter of the regular season to go.

All the SJW performers are boycotting this year's halftime, because of "kneeling".

Thus, accelerating the time when the players will lose money.

488 Trump can't get funding for the wall unless he has 10 Democrats in the Senate to vote for it. It's that simple. And Schumer is only interested in doing whatever it takes to refuse anything Trump wants that might take a single illegal out of the potential voting pool for Democrats.

OAN has been running a video of Schumer on the Senate floor back when he voted for building a wall and curtailing illegal immigration going on and on about how we MUST have border security through a wall and other means, and we must have merit based immigration. He sounds right of Trump in the video. NO one else is running that clip as far as I know, including Tucker, etc.

Once the House ends this session, Trump will not only have the Senate Dems to fight, but he'll have a House that will refuse to fund virtually anything he requests, will not produce a budget, and will simply use CR as political weapons.

I"m not sure why everyone is blaming the GOP for this, other than possibly McConnell for not changing Senate rules to allow for a simple majority. The entire current GOP could vote to fund the wall , and just 1 Democrat in the Senate says no, then it's dead.

556 $5 billion? With our spendthrift government and Congress? It's just pocket change they vacuum up on the floors of the House.

They are religiously determined to screw taxpayers and legal citizens at the behest of the Socialists for the Rich aka the Chamber of Commerce.

I'm going to out-Kerplach Kerplach and say not just the GOP but our whole federal government is a useless pile of dogsh*t.

558 OT ref. last thread

On the package stealing racket, my son is a young cop. The town was getting hit by package thefts so he and a couple of others really focused and caught one. They were then actually able to "turn" that guy, set up a little sting operation, and catch the whole crew of several people.

He was skeptical, though, as to what the court would do even when handed a completely air-tight case.

We'd be at Zero Population growth if we stopped immigration.

You know, like the GREENS want? so we don't use our resources too fast?

Why do we NEED an expanding population?

Country if full, Moose out front should have told you.

564 >>You don't need 60 for budget items. that's been my understanding.

>>How did we get a trillion dollar tax cut with less than 60?

They used budget reconciliation. Only takes 50 votes but there are strict rules and normal legislation like funding a wall don't apply.

For normal legislation you need 60 votes.

In fairness, back in 1986 the Soviet Empire still looked formidable. Problems like immigration seemed quite small then. Do not view History with Perfect Hindsight, it is a short step from that to the kind of nauseating Leftist anti-American fault finding we get all the time.

Based on voting patterns of racial groups, if America had the same racial makeup in 2016 as in 1966 Trump would have won all 50 states and the Republicans would have super majorities in both houses of congress.

Posted by: 18-1 at December 18, 2018 04:55 PM (cRkMZ)

567 As I noted above, I think there would be serious legal and political and practical issues with trying to use some ill-defined national security authority to build effective barriers, with either appropriated or privately-donated funds. Not so sure about the private one - I think WWII war bonds went into the general treasury funds (as you can still donate via the tax form if you like).

And as I said since last year, one thing neither the administration nor Hill GOP has done is to "politicize" the issue the way it should be. In a way that raises its profile even more and makes votes important for incumbents (both parties). The way all big issues were always handled, until 2009 when most big votes disappeared and CRs replaced regular appropriations.

Conway slipped in one interview immediately after the March CR debacle and said Trump had been "blind-sided" by the CR lacking his key immigration items, esp. border barrier. It's plausible, though unimaginable at the same time. The legislative affairs shop could have blind-sided him and the senior staff, though how anyone from that office could be at their jobs the next day is beyond my comprehension (Trump's handling of personnel, at least on the "bye bye" side, is excellent, and business-like).

In any case there was no sense of urgency, no serious political operation (which would include primarying GOP types) surrounding this central issue that made Trump president. And now? Barring some black swans (a whole flock), as I've been saying, no real action on urgent migration issues until 2021 at the earliest.

In a lot of ways Japan mirrors us. Hi tech, civilized, sophisticated. Yet they've somehow kept their instinct for self preservation up and down the line. Washington has sold us out, as you and Blago note by mentioning Hart-Celler and Reagan. I'm sure all politicians are scummy, but ours are the worst, the shittiest. Japan, Israel, Hungary - they are not willing to destroy their own countries.
