WRT money for The Wall: PDT can make the simple case that the "border barrier" will MORE than pay for itself eventually (likely in weeks or months) simply in the raw savings of not handing out the eventually more than $5 billion that the otherwise perpetually newly-invading hordes (and their subsequent anchor babies/chain-migration relatives) would collect from the U.S. Treasury in welfare, education, food, housing, etc. and other transfer payments.

The homily the priest said at the Mass for the suicide, which the family interrupted and objected to, is available. https://tinyurl.com/ybjkw933 Of it, canon lawyer Ed Peters says: "More importantly, and flatly contrary to how LaCuesta's homily has been portrayed in the media, I don't see Hell mentioned anywhere, anywhere, nor any language that relegates this poor young man thereto, and instead I see clarion reminders of the mercy of Christ recited at least half-a-dozen times. I see, too, the moral gravity of suicide - itself approaching epidemic proportions among Americans today - directly acknowledged and fears about its eternal consequences candidly admitted, but I also see consoling references to how much more God knows about one's life than do those even closest to Him and how much that deeper, likely mitigating, divine knowledge leaves the rest of us mortals, grieving a suicide, room for real hope. And I see real sympathy for the powerless, abject suffering visited on those left behind by a suicide, on people who would have moved heaven and earth to help a child seriously considering self-destruction, but who are now forever bereft of that chance (save for their prayers for the departed, of course). "And yet these few, balanced, honest, words were twice interrupted by family members for their failure 'to celebrate the life of the deceased', and the secular media, always ready to encourage a 'Let's you and him fight' scenario when it comes to Catholics and the Church, fomented a picture of this priest as a heartless thug without citing so much as a single independently-reported word of his homily?" Madamemayhem: I recently read "Dead Wake" by Erik Larson. It's about the sinking of the Lusitania, which of course was during WWI. The narrative switches back and forth between the Lusitania, the U-20, and British Intelligence. It's a fast-moving story that is highly engaging.

Looks like you have done a solid job with that one. Anyone who is interested in 20th century history, I would recommend 'The Great Terror' by Robert Conquest. It is pretty dense, but important stuff. Not graphic, except when it finally sinks in the numbers he is talking about. I am checking out Amazon to see if I can find 'Russia in WWII' which was used in a class on the subject in college. As far as Bubonic plague stuff, I would have to go back through my textbooks. Most of them were... dry, to put it mildly. 'Diary of a Plague Year' is used a lot. Aetius it's a very interesting book. Much of the material comes from veterans interviewed by the author, and the son of the most famous Soviet commander (Chuikov, 62nd Army) there.
Two colorful items from it. The city of course was mostly wrecked, and evacuated. Soviet commanders had their HQs in dug-outs, large draining pipes, or other improvised shelter. But they began using nice doors, looted from wrecked buildings, for their entrances. So these dirty sand-bagged field HQs would sometimes have beautiful doors. Bizarre. And Mosin-Nagant shooters would be amused/comforted to learn from a veteran of the Red October factory battle (fought *inside* the factory) that 1) his shoulder became very sore from constant shooting 2) he had to use a piece of cement or brick to close/open the bolt after the dust/filth began to impede operation 3) during prolonged engagements the rifle became too hot to hold, through the birch front handguard. Treacher isn't a cuck; he's broken. And I think the subtext of his rant is a longstanding personal vendetta against us right here in The Horde.

For instance: I disagree with some of Tuchman's conclusions about WWI, but The Guns of August is impeccably researched and written.
Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at December 17, 2018 09:26 PM (5aX2M) No, it is not. It is well-written, at least in terms of being an exciting narrative, but it gives almost exactly the wrong impression of the start of WWI, precisely because she didn't really research anything, but just re-wrote from a limited range of sources and wasn't really well-informed. In exactly the wrong areas, she deals with complex and critical issues in a single sentence. But don't take my word for it. I post this link every time this subject comes up, to an article from a better historian titled "That Terrible Tuchman Woman": https://bit.ly/2ErY92O, which contains links, in turn, to much better works on the subject. I particularly recommend July 1914 and The Sleepwalkers. Posted by: HTL at December 17, 2018 09:46 PM (RwInT) 210

Another book I really enjoyed (although it is very sad) is Japan At War: An Oral History by the Cooks. Japanese people talking about what they did and what happened to them. They sowed the wind and reaped the whirlwind. One of the most moving parts was about Japanese school girls (about your daughter's age) drafted to construct balloon bombs in horrible conditions intended to set America ablaze.
https://amzn.to/2ChZLL8 One caveat: These are people talking about themselves and I suspected in several places that human frailty being what it is that imperfect memory and imperfect understanding cause factual errors. Two examples. Japanese hiding from American soldiers in caves on Saipan describe us using poison gas to get them out. That certainly was not American policy although never underestimate the know how of frontline soldiers. I suspect they were using white phosphorus. A Japanese medic who participated in horrific incidents against the Chinese and who who was later held incommunicado for years by the Chinese communists may have "remembered" what he needed to remember to confess for the purpose of gaining his freedom.
