The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition

Love it or hate it, New York City is The country's (and perhaps the world's) premier city, and to allow it to descend into the maelstrom that Giuliani (and to a lesser extent Bloomberg) rescued it from is criminal.

NYC is the first stop for many tourists, and it gets more visitors -- something like 50,000,000 -- than any other city in America. Politics aside, we should be proud of this gateway too the country, and we should expect that it is maintained to a minimum standard. Unfortunately it is immersed in the politics of pretty much everything under the sun, except for silly things like minimizing crime and keeping the streets clean. DeBlasio is an incompetent hack, and it is sad that most New Yorkers are so apathetic about politics that they allow a small minority of well organized fanatics to control the destiny of what once was a great and safe city.

Re-civilize the Streets

Though the city’s official crime numbers have not yet worsened, signs of increasing disorder are everywhere. The city is filthy; any mayor should be ashamed to have European tourists witness our inability to keep the streets free of trash. Vagrants are multiplying. The solution to colonization by beggars and addicts is not more taxpayer-subsidized housing, which the city already provides in massive amounts at the expense of basic public services. The solution is enforcement of the law and willingness to insist that the mentally ill stay in treatment.

Those "official" crime numbers are crap. They ignore a lot of stuff, and have decriminalized a lot more, so any comparison is specious. Ask any New Yorker who isn't a liar and he will tell you that, "Yes, it's gotten worse." And the worst is yet to come.

I am literally shaking with rage at the thought of a room filled with people mocking the need for safe spaces. It’s like encountering hundreds of micro-aggressions all at once, like tiny paper cuts embedding themselves into my crevices. The first time I saw that clip, I zipped myself into my portable isolation chamber and ate nothing but tinned pineapple until the fear subsided.

72 Where I come from, New York City is not viewed or discussed with anything remotely approaching National Pride. It's openly scorned typically as somewhere best avoided. That view crosses most political and economic lines.

This is one of those great big glaring differences between the Mid-Atlantic/New England Urban View of the world, and the Southern/Midwestern Rural View. Those views are much, much more apart than folks care to realize. I think they're irreconcileable.

Beyond NYC, communities are crumbling and businesses are closing because the money is spent on giving out free college, free healthcare and welfare to everyone they can for votes. People who can leave, are, and they are not being replaced with people who can make the same tax contribution. There is nothing that makes it endearing any longer. I've been to third-world dumps that have a shiny city they use to falsely build up the image of their state. Now that number is way too low to reflect reality - but think about it... The City proper (where they did the study) only has about 710,000 people. It would need a population of millions for that number to be appropriate for our size.

On Flynn's refusal to recant his guilty plea; I don't know the ins-and-outs, but could that somehow be used against him in a trial?

And/or that his defense relies on state secrets that he can't or won't use?

The reasoning might be that the prosecution is not asking for any jail time, so Flynn is unlikely to get worse than that from the judge. If he goes to trial, he could get worse and he's back to going bankrupt from attorneys fees, too.

I don't know what options the judge has to reject the charge if the plea deal stands.

240 My BA is in history. I think the study of history has real value; it's undervalued, if anything. Having said that, I don't see why history departments should not be shut down. The standards have gotten abysmally low in many places; the humanities attract a lot of pseudo-scholars who offer bullshit courses. And a BA in history basically qualifies you for minimum-wage and entry-level positions having nothing to do with history. Given the debt that modern education imposes, you'd be better off reading history on your own.

Having read the 302 and compared it to the indictment, it appears Flynn told the agents (Strzok and Pientka) that he could not recall the details of the calls, rather than actually lying about the substance. This applies to 3 of the 4 accusations in the indictment.

254 Interesting that Amazon and Google are moving into NYC. I guess where they come from they won't mind paying a city income tax, high rents, traffic, parking that costs as much a house payment elsewhere, paying toll to get in, taxed on about everything. But of course they are used to that, coming from SF and LA etc.
