This is Realism. The idea is to depict life as it is, rather than as a romanticized version. Add in the historical context of post-Napoleon Europe and the rise of Socialism and Marxism, and Realism would be seen as subversive and anti-Traditionalism (which it was, in a way). A Realist would only depict what he himself witnessed. No abstraction, no symbolism, no idealism. The writings of Gustave Courbet, its unofficial leader are instructive to understanding Realism's motives.

It existed - as Grassley well knows. It was written by Agent Pientka, who also took extensive handwritten notes, whose name is redacted from Mueller's filing, and who seems to have disappeared. The color palette is interesting. Yellow dominates, with just minuscule dashes of red and blue -- the primaries. In a similar work, The Gleaners, that particular shade of yellow is supposed to get the viewer to feel the hot, laborous task of harvesting in an open field while the hot sun beats down onto your back. It's noteworthy then that this is that same shade (or supposed to be since The Gleaners was lost in WWII and any color versions are based on memories of those who saw the original).
Notice how the blues on the lounging workers is faded and dull, but the blue on the girl on the left is still deep and rich. Could it be implied that she's new? Her clothes have not yet been worn out by the hard work on bright sun? Notice also, that the man on the left is the only one in red. He is meant to stand out. Why? Is he the foreman, the boss? Notice he's darker than everyone else. Is this a hint at how the viewer is supposed to react to him? This is a very interesting piece to write about. The slave auction video, it emerged, was the tip of the iceberg of a forced labor market estimated to be worth $150 billion worldwide. Images resurfaced of black Africans being detained by militias in cages in Tripoli zoo. There were videos of Libyan coast guards whipping terrified black women and children at sea.
Perched on the northern coast of Africa, some 120 nautical miles across from the Mediterranean coast of Italy and Malta, oil-rich Libya has long served as a launching-off point for Europe. For nearly four decades, migrant numbers were controlled by the country's flamboyant dictator, Muammar Gaddafi. He periodically threatened to unleash an "influx of starving and ignorant Africans" who would turn the mainland into a "black Europe" - in order to wrangle cash-for-migration-control deals. I find Jean-Francois Millet paintings interesting for what he details (landscape versus people) and for his use of color. I especially enjoy his night and twilight scenes and the way they reflect a quiet mood. Of course there's a bit of the limp noodle BS, but it includes a very interesting comment. He says that Sullivan himself could order a special investigator to look into Mueller's conduct. And that he'd done so in the Stevens case. (Of course PM dismisses it as unlikely.) To me, that is a very interesting idea. Or, to put it differently, "Oh, please, please, please." God, I want to see Mueller in the dock. Then in prison. I do not see how he can escape obstruction charges himself, for instance. *Mirengoff seems eager to be the Allapundit of his site. 165 I once heard a theory about the way Millet rendered faces on his workers... They look almost simian, with very little detail. This could be to accent the primitive-ness of the lower and worker classes, to highlight the less-than-human-ness for these classes.
IF this is true, then Millet, who was a Socialist, was commenting on and criticizing the prejudices of society and it's social elites. One of the tricks of art historical analysis is to eliminate your own biases and put yourself into the eyes of the artist creating the work. You then should have a greater appreciation for why the work was made and why it looks the way it does. Unfortunately, not many students will do this. Instead, they will try to analyse art from the past through today's lenses. Not only is that unfair, but the student will get a grossly distorted understanding of the work and judge it accordingly.
Sometimes this involves reading and understanding very unpleasant writings or ideas. Posted by: Kris at December 17, 2018 10:44 AM (OyyDO) 307

Those types of "students" need a phrenologist. I recommend Bugs Bunny. Somebody needs to whomp some sense into their skulls to replace the mush that's in there now. The whole idea of learning is understanding that you, the student, doesn't know everything. Which I'm pretty sure is the exact opposite of what they're being taught now. Posted by: BackwardsBoy at December 17, 2018 10:51 AM (HaL55) 331
