Wow, it's Saturday morning already. Good morning Horde. Let's take a look at a few stories that didn't get too much attention this past week here at the AoSHQ.

***

  • Russians lie!H/T Anonosaurus Wrecks

  • Turning Japanese Korean.

  • Rats in the senate. What else is new?

  • If true, OUCH!

  • It's getting to look a lot like Christmas.

  • But does he pour maple syrup on French Toast?

  • My guess is that the 'ettes don't want these.

  • Polly wants a cracker Fvck Off

  • This Santa knows who has been naughty.

  • Random guy and the body slam.

  • Well, that didn't work out too well.

Enjoy these stories or something else that tickles your fancy. After all this is an open thread.

The regular Saturday rules remain the same: No running with sharp objects, no pulling 'ettes pony tails and play nice with one another.

I'm with PETA for once. It's cruel to put innocent rodents in close proximity to politicians. What dread diseases might the poor rats catch?

And it cannot be a good moral influence. Remember, there are some things rats won't do.

    Mornin', Morons

I have a prayer request for you, and I just sent it off to Fen.

One of my co-workers and a good friend, Juan, is going into the hospital next week for removal of a brain tumor. Sounds worse than it is, but it's been pressing up against his optic nerve and pituitary and is starting to affect his vision. The doctors are telling him that this type is a fairly common growth, and is virtually always benign (the MRI leans that way as well). Having said that, it's still surgery, so prayers would be appreciated.

And I'd like to also say a special thanks to Fen for managing the Prayer List. Even us non-churchgoing heathens greatly appreciate your efforts.

125 And of course even after the law is ruled dead by a judge, it still stays in place. But the second a liberal judge rules something unconstitutional it stops immediately. Funny how that works.

Trump should have immediately said the law is no longer in place. Health insurance companies are free to offer any product they want. Instead nothing changes until the years or appeals will take place by which time Trump may be gone anyway.

How did Pitbull ever become a thing?

But, still...Aquaman say it ain't so!

Does every movie have to end with a rap close-out over the credits?

"Overlord", which theoretically took place during WWII ends with a blues harmonica riff that morphs into a full out blues stomp, so-

cool and reasonably appropriate for the era, but then it changes into some lame ass rapper rapping about his lame ass and spoils the mood.

175 Does every movie have to end with a rap close-out over the credits?

"Overlord", which theoretically took place during WWII ends with a blues harmonica riff that morphs into a full out blues stomp, so-

cool and reasonably appropriate for the era, but then it changes into some lame ass rapper rapping about his lame ass and spoils the mood.

I think the answer to your question is: Yes. Yes it does.

Most Hollowwood movies these days are cookie cutter stamped out of the system, so thoroughly tested to maximize profit, that there's probably, literally, some guy in some department whose job it is to pick out the "appropriate" rap song to play second during the credits.

247 Found out yesterday that our illustrious Dem governor has vetoed a constitutional amendment that was duely approved by the voters.

"The fundamental flaw in the bill is its sinister and cynical origins," the governor said. "It was designed to suppress the rights of minority, poor and elderly voters. The cost of disenfranchising those voters or any citizens is too high, and the risk of taking away the fundamental right to vote is too great, for this law to take effect."

Basically, the language of the law, nor of the practicality of the law, nor the Constitutionality of it mattered. What mattered is that voter fraud must continue and ironically disenfranchise lawful voters by cancelling their votes with illegally cast votes.

306 Hey! Here a fun cocktail I found in an online video for uh...who's the late night NBC guy. He sucks but this cocktail looked good so I tried it.

There were no measurements, as the cocktail was from some restaurant, but it looked easy to duplicate and was.

I'll probably post it on the food thread tomorrow, but you can get a head start Today!

    This is for two people.

Step 1: Finely grate an English cucumber, jalapeño, and ginger root. Roughly between one to two tsp of each. You can vary the amounts for what you like. If you want it lighter and more refreshing, heavy on the cucumber and ginger. You like spicy- heavier on the ginger.

    Put that inside your shaker.

    Step 2:

    Add

    1 oz simple syrup
    2 oz fresh lime juice

    Step 3:

Here's where you also get to make a choice:

The original recipe was for vodka but it also works well for gin.

But, what really works the best is:

    Mezcal from San Luis Potosi!

Most of the mescals from SLP don't have a smokey flavor, so if you hate smokiness. Don't worry. These mescals have a fruity flavor with a strong hint of green pepper flavor and it really blends well with this combination. I'll recommend a few below.

    Okay. So...Step 3:

3 oz of vodka or gin or mezcal

Step 4: Shake with Ice. Strain. (Don't worry to much about getting every little bit of grating out. Makes the cocktail look yummier)

    Drink.

Try it. Today! You'll love it.

San Luis Potosi Mezcalsmade from Agave Salmiana)

    1) Mezcales De Leyenda San Luis Potosi

    2) Mezcal Derrumbes San Luis Potosi

    3) Miel De Tierra Joven Agave Salmiana

    4) Cobardes Mezcal Salmiana Joven

    5) Wild Shot (this one is smokey - imported by a CW singer trying to be the Jimmy Buffett of Mezcal I guess. Tastes good though, if you like or don't mind smoke)

    Check it out.

308 Even if ruling stands, unless entire law is struck down (and as a super-legislature, the "courts" can decide to just amend the law by dropping, er, I mean "striking down" certain elements and leaving the rest), the biggest damage to the country, the destruction of the individual policy market, will be unaffected. And even *if* that pernicious crap goes too, most of the affected population (living in "blue" states) will get no relief, as those states will immediately take steps to make sure the disaster continues in that segment. At least I'm confident of this outcome.

Obama's election and O-care (to include all the court actions) were two definitive national IQ and integrity tests, and the country flunked both terribly. The little tantrum in 2010 at the polls was a corpse twitch. Voters don't know or care enough to govern themselves intelligently, institutions are collapsed, this is what you get.

And even *if* that pernicious crap goes too, most of the affected population (living in "blue" states) will get no relief, as those states will immediately take steps to make sure the disaster continues in that segment. At least I'm confident of this outcome.

If Trump's really popular with the voters,

a lot of the big up and comers will stay away so they don't get the stink of failure from losing a national election.

In that case, a wild card like Clinton was with GHWB or more likely - Hillary! and/or Biden as the President since they definitely won't be able to run again.

With an up and comer as VP, so they can strut their stuff in speeches but not take the blame for losing.

Me too. We are entering into uncharted waters.

That should be slapped down ASAP. It's unconstitutional to begin with and look at all the people who can't afford it. You'd think somebody in the GOP would start proposing a genuine solution to that idiocy. We had the best health system in the world prior to Zero-Care and it was run by the private sector. There's no reason that can't be done again, better and cheaper.
We need to get out in front of this and get back to some semblance of common sense in government. I believe it was the Italian PM who said the other day, "Let's not make progress towards more mistakes" or something similar. That's a good way to put it.

Check the remaining glass for cracks. They will spread during future heat cycles, so replace it if there are cracks. Check periodically to see if any cracks appear or expand.

If the broken edge is sharp you need to fix that. Go to the hardware store and get a fine sharpening stone or the right kind of sand-paper (garnet or sapphire? I forget which, but the people at the store should be able to help with advice on a stone or paper) and gently round the edge. Emphasis on gently and patiently, since you do not want to cause further chipping.

As a Christmas gift, a couple of my husband's realtor colleagues were planning to provide hotel rooms for families who were living in their cars. You know, give them a warm place to sleep and relax and shower.

The local hotels have tried this before, though, and have found these families express their appreciation by trashing and destroying the hotel rooms. The hotels are not interested in dealing with the aftermath.

The realtors adapted their approach and have instead purchased things like blankets that might help the families be more comfortable in their cars.

463 A lot of the homeless population are, to put it bluntly, on the run. We had one in this area, captured, sentenced, for murder in a hobo camp along the railway. He was released on diminished mental capacity years later (from death row).

464 Being homeless isn't usually the only issue with homeless people. Shitty choices, drugs, drinking and/or craziness.

466 Utah is set to become the state with the strictest limit for alcohol consumption before driving, dropping the standard for blood alcohol content (BAC) from the nationwide standard of .08 to .05.

    -
Depending on weight, how quickly you drink, etc., a single beer could put you over the limit.

472 Many are homeless because they don't fit common society. In times past they would have been housed in a facility that would be helpful to them and separate from a world they cannot cope with.

Arm yourself with irrefutable facts/data. Be prepared to cite them and back them up.

Not that this will make it past the Left/Liberal/Prog/Dem filters that have been installed in their psyches, but it will force them to respond.

That response is usually, "Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree." Which means, of course, that they have no substantive counter-argument.

As I have said here several times, I no longer accept that response, pointing out that it tacitly suggests that both arguments have equal merit, which they don't. I after all, have cited data/facts, they have cited nothing but their 'feelings' or perspective.

479 Tickled Pink, have you considered AeroPress?

French press is okay if you like grounds in your coffee. I have one, but only make coffee with a manual pour-over setup. I have a cone-shaped thing that sits over a cup and holds a filter and I pour hot water over the coffee grounds. No machine required.

Replacement glass is usually available for a lot less than the cost of the microwave, although it's not cheap (it's not normal glass, it's probably borosilicate glass). Given a brand and model number, it's a few searches on the internet to find a replacement, especially for major brands. Try to watch the chip and make sure it's not cracking and spreading. You don't want to chew on or swallow a piece of glass.

I just wanted to repeat myself (yes, I am getting old). The glass in a microwave is subject to heat cycling. Thermal cycling causes stress in the glass which causes cracks to propagate. If new cracks start showing up or spreading, definitely stop using it immediately. If you keep checking the chip and it never changes, you are probably OK.

You can always remove the glass and microwave on top of paper towels to try to reduce cleaning while working out how to fix the glass. If you have one of those spinning tray models, you won't get as even heating, but that doesn't really matter.

488 The local hotels have tried this before, though, and have found these families express their appreciation by trashing and destroying the hotel rooms. The hotels are not interested in dealing with the aftermath.

The realtors adapted their approach and have instead purchased things like blankets that might help the families be more comfortable in their cars.

But dang! Why would people treat others so shabbily when they are receiving a thoughtful gift?
Posted by: Emmie at December 15, 2018 11:06 AM (4HMW

You don't suppose it could be that those "families" living in their cars are doing so because they don't have the necessary self-discipline to behave themselves in normal accommodations?
