As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Easier Problem - Black To Play (844)

Goal: Easy mate in 4
Hint: Get that rook out of there

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (817)

A tricky endgame.

Goal: White can actually force a win from this position
Hint: Use queen and knight to force Black to give up his newly-won queen

Solutions Update

Easier Problem - Black To Play

20181208 - Problem 1.jpg
k4r2/ppB5/8/1P1p2p1/6Qp/1P2P1nP/2PP1qPK/6R1 b - - 0 1

1...Qxg1+!

That rook needed to be gotten rid of. Now the checkmate can be executed by the rook supported by the knight.

2.Kxg1 Rf1+
3.Kh2 Rh1#

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20181208 - Problem 2.jpg
8/8/8/P7/3K4/1N6/4pk1p/7B w - - 0 1

1.Nc1

This stops the pawn. If now 1...e1Q?? then 2.Nd3+ wins with the fork.

1...Kg1

2. Nxe2+ Kxh1

And now Black can push his other pawn.

3.a6

The best. Trying to stop Black from queening his pawn is futile: 3.Ke3 Kg2 4.Nf4+ Kf1 5.Ne2 Kg2 6.Nf4+ Kf1 7.Ne2 Kg2, etc.

3...Kg2
4.a7 h1=Q
5.a8=Q+ Kh2

And this is where it gets tricky. White's strategy is to maneuver Black into having to stave off a mating threat by blocking with his queen on a square that is also covered by the knight.

6.Qb8+ Kg2
7.Qb7+ Kh2
8.Qh7+ Kg2
9.Qe4+ Kh2
10.Qh4+ Kg2
11.Nf4+

This is the key move. Black needs to go to g1 to protect hid queen. My chess app, seeing the approaching end, simply gave up: 11...Kf3 12.Qxh1+ Kxf4 13.Qh5 and wins.

But humans want to hold on to the queen:

11...Kg1
12.Qe1+ Kh2
13.Qf2+

And now we're at the critical position. Black's only move is to block.

13...Qg2
14.Qxg2#

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

29 I mentioned this earlier today. The Kindle Daily Deals has many of JRR Tolkien's books on sale for $2.99 each. These are the 'today only' category. Besides LOTR and The Hobbit, they also offer collected Letters of JRR Tolkien,
Letters From Father Christmas (a delight), and most of the other books associated with Middle Earth. I have all of these in hardback but at this price I will have e-reader backups. It's cheap convenience for a Tolkien fanatic.

I can go months without anything of interest on the Kindle Daily Deals but today is a treasure trove.

Just FYI.

I've got to buy some new T-shirts. Miley had a shit fit over the holes in some of mine. Why, I've got one on that's barely broken in, with just a little hole under the armpit and she thinks that's just awful.

119 Easier puzzle: Four? What am I missing?

1... Qxg1+
2. Kxg1 Rf1+
3. Kh2 Rh1#

More challenging problem: I hate endgame puzzles. The decision tree branches off too many times with an open sandbox. The only move I foresee for White that forestalls disaster is 1. Nc1. This way if Black queens on the e-file White can respond with 2. Nd3+! forking the queen. It will cost the knight, but with the other pawn blocked and a passed pawn that would get the job done. Even if Black refuses the gambit and just moseys over to take the bishop and liberate his pawn, White queening on the same diagonal would prevent much advantage.

"Just a little hole under the armpit"? There was a herd of holes, my good man! The other one sent me to my fainting couch. You looked as though Ben Hur had been dragging you around the arena a few times.

You must renounce your holey ways. I do not darn holes in t-shirts. Don't think I won't speak to your mother personally about this. And then she's going to feel terrible - terrible, I tell you - that after years invested in your upbringing, she has failed to "finish" you.

Avoid this by purchasing a new t-shirt for every one you convert a to car-polishing rag. I would suggest a few in black. Very stylish for the modern redneck.

Maybe a black wife-beater...

Similar to the California House races that were all ripped off by the Demos.

VH is illegal in almost all states, but Calif legislature made vote harvesting legal in 2016 in their state. VH is despicable and destroys the concept of the secret ballot.

Bought this DVD recently of Idena Menzel (Frozen, Wicked) who is describing paying her way through college as a wedding singer. Popular tune for her to sing was a Whitney Houston tune, "Saving All My Love For You" with lyrics that include the line, 'A few stolen moments is all that we share, You've got your family, and they need you there.'

Celebrating their marriage with a song about infidelity, is how she put it.

friggin' booze laws. In CO you can't buy booze (or wine or real beer) in Walmart, but you can stand in the parking lot of a liquor store and hit the next liquor store with a rock. Wyoming's truck stops have little walled-off segments where you can buy, but it has to be in a little cubicle, separate transaction. Montana stores sell full-strength beer.

The Left has gone completely insane after the Rat Cohen agreed to a plea.

You are correct in your analysis. What they are hanging their hat on is that they are trying to make the bimbo payoffs into a campaign finance violation, which somehow makes it an impeachable offense and a criminal offense.

Except that paying off bimbos, WITH YOUR OWN MONEY LIKE TRUMP DID, is perfectly legal and happens all the time.

But the Lefties (quit using the term "Liberals", they don't exist in America any more) are chanting and chirping like never before. They are literally turning insane in their own bubble of fake reality.
