Bad Sex

Bad sex award 2018

The Literary Review’s annual showcase of ‘outstandingly bad’ erotic writing.

“Empty my tanks,” I’d begged breathlessly, as once more she began drawing me deep inside her pleasure cave. Her vaginal ratchet moved in concertina-like waves, slowly chugging my organ as a boa constrictor swallows its prey. Soon I was locked in, balls deep, ready to be ground down by the enamelled pepper mill within her.

Bullshit!

This is a pretty damn good article that makes a very good point: For everything we've gained in convenience and knowledge, we've lost quite a bit too. The first night described in the article, back when friends were people, not pixels, sounds legend - wait for it - ary. The modern version? Meh, not so much.

The Fine Art of Bullshit: Killed by Google

Two on Trade

Why Trump's Tariffs Won't Cost Consumers a Nickel

Americans Could Learn to Live Without ‘Made in China’

I'm of two minds here. By inclination, I believe in free trade. Absolutely the best idea for everyone, all around. No question about that. The problem I have with the evangelical free traders is, what do you do when you're offering free trade, but the other guy isn't? Seems to me that's The Prisoner's Dilemma, but with one side determined to be honorable at all costs. Over and over and over.. That's...not a recipe for success, if you're the honorable guy.

I see a lot of this kind of stuff on the mainstream right. * Sniff * “That would be against my principles”. Yeah? Well, your principles told you to take in that homeless guy, but he wrecked your car, he's fucking your wife and daughter, and he just pawned all your power tools to buy crack, but we certainly wouldn't want you to endanger your principles or anything*. The entire Republican party is just full of people who keep dropping the soap in the shower, yet every single time they're just so astonished when the Dems come knock-knock-knockin' on their back door.

I don't know what the right answer is, but I do know that:

A) Stop being a chump; and
B) Balancing principles with pragmatism

is a big part of it.

*Man, how long has it been since I've seen Down and Out in Beverly Hills? Gotta be 30 years.

Two on Trump

Trump's Success Reflects Conservative Failures

Is There A 51% Solution For Trump?

Now, VDH is a lot smarter than I'll ever be, but I think Jesse Kelly has a better answer: Get out of Afghanistan. If Trump ends the war, he wins 2020 in a landslide. We can always go back and bounce the rubble if the goat fuckers start acting up.

25 That has been my big problem with the people who keep dreaming out about "free trade" and how Trump implementing tariffs might affect the price of blueberries. We keep finding out that all these countries Trump is talking about imposing tariffs on have tariffs on a lot of US goods. So we already don't have free trade but they're all screaming about Trump but haven't said shot about getting those countries to ditch their tariffs on us.

The counsel of diversification. But yeah, I know what you mean.
Next door to where I work was a big Western Electric plant, then became Lucent (same difference). Toward the end of the telecom boom in the 90's, their stock was going through the roof, and all the oldsters who were getting ready to retire put all their money in Lucent stock. Some were worth a couple of million dollars.

Then, it crashed (and that's another sad story), and a lot of those people who were ready to retire went broke.

145 The things the doctrinaire free traders forget is that tariffs are often for other things than supporting domestic production.

If you have manufactured goods made without safety or environmental concerns, by slave labor, and subsidized by a foreign country that wishes to knobble your manufacturing, isn't a tariff a way of disincentivizing :

a) sweatshops
b) ecological destruction
c) slavery
d) the undercutting of domestic employment by forcing domestic retailers to employ, at second hand, slavery?

It may profit domestic producers, but since every doctrinaire free trader claims that never works, why bother complaining about it and do it for the right reason?

Wouldn't there actually be two different types of sperm making up
the two halves of the male's dna split into gametes. Right? Or am I
misremembering my biology classes which were a few years ago?Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at December 07, 2018 10:07 PM (2y6oq)

Sounds entirely plausible. Optimally encoded, that's 23 extra bits of information per sperm. Not two types of sperm but 2^23 (two choices for each of the 23 chromosomes). But there's still only 46 chromosomes to choose from, so max she's swallowing 75MB per load (=37.5MB x2 - I misremembered as 35MB). Not such a chore.

269 The theory behind free trade not being a prisoner's dilemma goes something like this:

1. When you put a tariff on things coming into your country, you're only making those things more expensive for people in your country.

2a. This means that you're making those things, and everything made from those things, more expensive for people in your country, compared to if you didn't have the tariffs, because competition is lessened by some sellers having their costs artificially raised.

2b. Further, it also means that everything made from those things are more expensive to make, and so make domestic producers of those secondary things less competitive both domestically and globally.

For 2a, imagine if everything that had "made in Taiwan" stamped on it cost 20% more. In some cases you'd just go to the non-made in Taiwan stuff. In many cases, there are only a few alternatives, and so those alternatives will get lazy and not keep their costs down. Also, in many cases there is no alternative, and so you either go without or eat the 20% tariff.

For 2b, which is felt heaviest when there are tariffs on raw materials, imagine a tariff on steel. So now everything made in the US that uses step costs more, both in and out of the US. This makes US businesses less competitive both inside and outside the United States, because businesses in non-tariff countries have access to cheaper steel and so can make the same product at a lower cost.

The standard way around it domestically is to say, well, okay, then everything made from steel also has a tariff on it, which only snowballs the costs both to consumers and to businesses.

The standard way around it globally is to rebate the tariff for US businesses exporting to other countries, so that their products aren't hamstringed by the tariff, but this adds regulatory costs, it highlights that tariffs raise prices for people in the US and not people outside the US, and it creates an annoying grey market where things get exported and then re-imported to take advantage of the lower cost.

Which means that tariffs have two important effects: they raise costs domestically, and they hamstring domestic businesses globally.

This is the theory, as I understand it from reading people like Thomas Sowell. I could well be misunderstanding it. The way he describes it it is really an anti-prisoner's dilemma, where you'd want everyone else to have tariffs except you.

270 The issue with free trade models, at least at the level that most political pundits can understand, is that they assume capital and labor are fungible. This may not be the case.

Which is better for your country?

1) As a consumer you want free trade.
2) As a worker, you often don't. Typical American worker has been burdened by a high burden on top of what he gets in wages. Regulation, social welfare costs, crazy high healthcare costs, high US corporate tax rates. And we pay for a Navy that keeps Apple's sea lanes open. A tragedy of the Obama years was making this worse.
3) Countries that develop and retain manufacturing skills move up the ladder
3) Most successful countries have balanced #1, #2 and #3 with some species of mercantilism.
4) We made unfavorable trade treaties that turned out to be far worse in practice, because our political class and certain industries profited greatly from it

Not dumping on the man, but Bush 41 helped bring us this New World Order.

375 Suppose (and I'm not saying this is so, only hypothesizing) no tariffs means that widgets costs $4, but your domestic industry collapses because all of the jobs move overseas, but tariffs prop up your industries so that people are still employed, but widgets cost $6. Which is better for your country?

I'm pretty sure the answer is that you can't have that hypothetical, because it assumes things that aren't true, and diverts attention from the real problems. It assumes that people will continue buying $6 domestic widgets when they're available for $4 from global widget-makers. And it ignores the most likely reason for domestic business problems is a burdensome regulatory environment, which tariffs won't change. So that domestic businesses will still go out of business, being unable to complete globally.

My go-to example is Apple, several years ago, discovering a few weeks from launch that their design for their phone screens had a launch-killing design flaw. So Apple sent a bunch of executives to China and completely retooled the manufacturing plant with enough time to spare to meet their launch date. This kind of retooling is impossible in the United States, due to environmental reports, union mandates, and so on. Tariffs won't change that. In your hypothetical, any phone company relying on domestic production would have not shipped an product that could compete, and would go out of business.

If I want reality and depression, I can look at my check book. If I want social relevancy and even more depression, I read the news. If I want a decent plotline, I'll read the latest Charles Todd or Carol O'Connell book. I go to the movies to be entertained. 440 >> This kind of retooling is impossible in the United States, due to environmental reports, union mandates, and so on.

The situation you are referring to was brought up by an apple exec. I think the details are that they needed a different screw design so they called the screw factory down the road, and had the workers called in from their dorms to make the change overnight.

He said it was impossible in the US, and as someone with experience manufacturing cell phones, I only have two points.

1. The small parts companies do not exist in the US because all their customers are in Asia. If apple were to open a factory in USA, suppliers would follow.

2. Having to wait for workers to show up in the morning would only cost a half day. This is not critical. And it is hard to argue that you care about the workers, but really appreciate the slave labor in China that can be called out of bed to help you meet your shipment.

What the exec. said at that time was nonsense. The US can build cell phones and while it will cost more because US suppliers don't steal IP, and US workers are paid more, You can not argue that we need to put the US workforce on the dole, and buy shit from China because US can't do it. Or that it is cheaper.

442 Bush was a first gen post war Republican. They were shaped by WW2 and the early Cold War, where international institutions and free trade were a means of uniting the West and pulling the third world into our sphere of influence while constraining the expansion of communism. The problem is that the second gen Republicans didn't know how to adjust to meet the new world after the fall of the USSR.

I actually think Far Harbor is better than Nuka- World. Multiple outcomes without completely tucking over the rest of the game. Nuka- World if you are choosing to go good guy you might as well immediately start killing them all because you won't gain the perks anyway without invading the commonwealth. It's just limiting your options on that DLC for when you can screw over the Raider factions for maximum benefit without the use of mods.

Wow, thanks to your Dad for his service.

I have a book from a local guy who on the Battan death march. Then served in the prison coal mines in Japan. When the bombs were dropped the guards left the prison camp.

He and a friend took off to the coast. In Nagasaki and they saw what they thought were burning tires amongst the devastation. Turns out it was human bodies.

They went to the pier and lo and behold an American ship was coming ashore. They were amazed to find Americans on the dock.

When he was on the ship and examined by nurses, he was ca. 5 lbs and cried because he was so embarrassed.

Book is "You Can't Conquer Them" by Donald M. Nichols.

I wonder if they're finally getting the message that no one cares about them anymore? Those Groupon sales for their L.A. show, the empty seats in the leftiest part of Canada.

What I would give to *know* that they're pissed off, bewildered, humiliated, and fighting like cats and dogs over this dumb idea of doing a joint tour. Screaming at whoever booked these giant venues without "proper" advertising and failing to dragoon bigger audiences.

I hope they're eating their own livers at the thought of the Obamas getting their 9-figure fortune for no damn work at all. Never had to sweat it out in fucking Arkansas! That's exactly it. You can't raise the bottom; you can only lower the top.

Filth, squalor, violence, and oppression has been the norm throughout human history. Occasionally exceptional individuals and cultures rise above it and improve things for nearly everyone. *cough* Western Civilization *cough*

The levelers want to stifle that because it's not "fair". That will end human progress and drive everyone down to the bottom.

The place I get my hair cut at, well trimmed anyway, has a smoking girl working the counter there. Beautiful chick, perfect skin, perfect face, great body and rack, and not really young either, I'm guessing mid- late 30's. She has a tat on her neck and has the sides of her head buzz cut, and the top is never the same color when I go in there. I have seen white, blue, red, brownish red, purple, you name it. I commented on her tat, I asked if it hurt getting it there, and she says I have 9 more, I'm brave like that. I never saw the others, so I can't imagine where they are.

[University of Houston] policy was developed to comply with Senate Bill No. 11, also known as the ;campus carry law, and follows months of discussion and deliberation. Campus community members, including students, faculty and staff, were invited to share their input prior to the policy development through several open forums, a campus-wide survey, and emailed comments at campuscarry@uh.edu.

SB11 allows individuals licensed to carry concealed handguns to carry a concealed handgun on or about the license holder's person while the license holder is on the campus of an institution of higher education and

Authorizes the president to establish reasonable rules, regulations, or other provisions regarding the carrying of concealed handguns by license holders on campus;
Limits authority such that the president or officer may not establish provisions that generally prohibit or have the effect of generally prohibiting license holders from carrying concealed handguns on the campus of the institution;
Allows for broad input from students, faculty, and staff; and
Requires an implementation deadline of August 1, 2016.

I like that idea. But there's have to be a whole lot of them, too many to shoot. And if their government moved against them in any violent way, it'd be impossible to keep that from being known, which could bring some international pressure on the corruption.

676 @562 Agreed. I still can't understand why globalistas aren't trying to make the rest of the world emulate our proven success. There'd be a lot more money for them to pilfer if they did.
--------------

Two reasons. First is because it's easier to make us like the rest of the world than it is to make the rest of the world like us. You have to have certain cultural norms to get a representative government like ours working properly. Some parts of the world are ready for that. Most aren't. And you don't get the wealth without the representative democracy bit.

Second is because a representative democracy can throw them out on their ear when they start getting too greedy. And contrary to what Obama has claimed, they never really believe that they've earned enough money.

Mostly I think it's just rejectionist attitudes. Years of pop culture villification of the alleged "Barbie Doll" look and the portrayal of attractive blonde debutantes as the "mean girl" have ushered in an era of tatted freaks and green haired fatties.

Unfortunately for them, fit blonde chicks are still hot and highly prized, though the possession of a vagina ensures that even what would once be considered a carnival sideshow act is still placated by a subsection of dudes that will bang anything.

Heavenly Sovereign.

It was The Code of Bushido, The Warrior's Code or The Way of the Warrior, that led to the atrocities committed. In Bushido, surrender was not an option and those who surrendered were considered less than whale shit on the bottom of the ocean. When one views those who surrender, as many Allies did early in the war, as not even human, no amount of poor treatment/torture can ever be enough.

An interesting tidbit I remember watching on the dvd extras for The Great Raid. The director had a 'boot' camp for each group: the American PoWs , the Aussie PoWs and the Japanese prison guards.

When the Japanese actors were told to be more brutal, they balked, saying they didn't believe the script, that it was over the top. The director had to show the actors the real story and most of them had never heard about the atrocities committed by Japanese troops, the whitewashing by the Japanese government of such atrocities having been so thorough.

The main problems with Japan post-war are:

1) We allowed the emperor to remain on the throne;

2) We didn't have a Pacific War Crimes Tribunal as was held at Nuremburg, which leads to;

3) Many Japanese view their soldiers in WWII as heroic, not brutal beasts, with rehabilitation ongoing;

4) Most importantly, the atomic bombings are not viewed through the lens of Japanese aggression/atrocities, like the rape of Nanking, but rather an atrocity in its own right.

The Japanese population, as a whole, have no idea about the Imperial Japanese Army actions taken during WWII. That old saw comes to mind: Those who do not study history are condemned to repeat it. In Japan's case, it is worse because of the whitewashing. Compare how we treated Germany post-WWII and how we treated Japan. The Germans are still living with the shame of WWII while Japan has no shame about WWII.

We all agree that tariffs create some negative economic incentives, but income taxes create WORSE economic incentives. You have to fund the government somehow and realistically and historically you have those two options. To be against tariffs means there WILL be income tax because Washington is going to get its money.

2)
The arguments for Free Trade can also be applied to the Free movement of capital and the free movement labor. By accepting the premise of Free Trade you are inevitably accepting Open Borders and mass migrations.

Even Hideki Tojo is being rehabilitated.

Japanese film makes Tojo a hero Movie: Conservative elements in Japan provide a warm reception for the cinematic rewriting of history, but foreign governments protest.

Sun Journal

May 30, 1998 By Jon Herskovitz, SPECIAL TO THE SUN

TOKYO -- A major Japanese movie studio has rehabilitated Japan's World War II prime minister, Gen. Hideki Tojo, in a film that shows the convicted war criminal as a misunderstood hero who was made a fall guy by the U.S. occupation force.

The movie, called "Pride -- The Fateful Moment," opened last weekend in 145 theaters -- 50 years after Tojo was hanged for war crimes.

The Japanese studio that produced the film, Toei Co., said it was made "to correct mistaken perceptions about General Tojo." Its advertising promoted the movie as a struggle between Tojo and America, "a solitary battle for the pride of the Japanese nation."

China and North Korea have officially denounced the film as a historical whitewash, but it was hailed by conservative factions in Japan that have long argued that the country's militarism was a self-defense mechanism to thwart Western imperialism.

--SNIP--

Posted by: RickZ at December 08, 2018 03:21 AM (Y8PSl)

842 There was a Far Eastern Military Tribunal, and also tribunals in the Philippines and I believe Singapore. The story of Tojo's flight, his bungled suicide attempt, and capture - and the melodrama of his wife's pleas for mercy after he was condemned by the tribunal - is quite something. Some consider the Philippines tribunal to have cut some corners and be less than up to standard.

Overall the question of Japanese views of the war is a bit complicated.

As a practical and strategic matter, the crushing defeat destroyed militarism even before our Occupation formally imposed pacifism, both in outlook and law. Which worked spectacularly in the ensuing decades where the Cold War division of labor had the US handling most of the security duties vs. the USSR and China.

Times change. Generational change, North Korean and Chinese behavior, and US weakness under Obama, all accelerated Japanese attitude shift to a more normal zone. Not the slightest bit of war fever. But also very little of the stupid, disgraceful, sidelines nitpicking and moralizing about US military operations that have demeaned Europe and others the last 60 years.

845 Japan is likely wrong in one way that they don't have enough shame in their involvement in WW 2. And Germany is likely wrong the other way. Too much shame to the point that they have rejected almost all national pride of any kind. I honestly don't think that would have happened, considering the historical differences between Germany and Japan. Japan has always been xenophobic, not opening their island to outsiders until Matthew Perry sailed into Tokyo harbor in 1853; one could say that was the origin of 'gunboat diplomacy'. Japan was isolated, being an island and all, while Germany was smack dab in the middle of many European wars, literally and figuratively.

An interesting historical 'What if?' question, though.

You'd think a people arrogant and vain enough to produce the Third Reich would also somehow keep its sense of national honor even in defeat, but I don't know the Germans much. Maybe they did preserve a sense of national honor for a while and the self-destruction happening there now is some new disease that's gripped the West.

852 Let me just add, I think Japan is one of our best allies, both in trade and militarily, not perfect, mind you. Do I trust Japan in the future not to regress back to imperial ways? Again, I don't think so but, as you say Rhomboid, times change and anything can happen.

I will take the Japan of today, no doubt. But I do understand the trepidations of the Koreas, China and the countries of southeast Asia when it comes to Japan enlarging their military, specifically their navy. And a large part of their trepidation comes from the Japanese having a tendency to think themselves blameless in WWII.

855 The arguments for Free Trade can also be applied to the Free movement of capital and the free movement labor. By accepting the premise of Free Trade you are inevitably accepting Open Borders and mass migrations.

Why? People and free trade aren't the same thing. Trade, the economy, the government... it's all there to serve the people. Who are already here. Not random people around the world.

858 The problem with free trade isn't that countries can take advantage of each other. The problem is it increases class disparities within countries. Even without free movement of labor, with free trade companies can engage in labor arbitrage.

There can not exist free trade without fair trade. That is, we echo your tariff policies. 40% tariff on steel? Fine, right back atcha. 200% tariff on milk? Here ya go.

As the world's largest consumer country, we are disproportionately hit by tariffs. All PDT is doing though is turning their policies right back around on them, and adjusting what is subject to tariffs to reflect the impact it has on us.

865 I'll repeat this in the course of the day. The Kindle Daily Deals has many of JRR Tolkien's books on sale for $2.99 each. Besides LOTR and The Hobbit, they also offer collected Letters of JRR Tolkien,
Letters From Father Christmas (a delight), and most of the other books associated with Middle Earth. I have all of these in hardback but at this price I will have ereader backups. It's cheap convenience for a Tolkien fanatic.

I can go months without anything of interest on the Kindle Daily Deals but today is a treasure trove.

Just FYI.

It depends on what you think is most important. People who crunch the numbers generally agree the most beneficial thing is to trade with everyone no matter what their tariff policies are. Most beneficial, that is, to GDP.

But as I noted before, trade doesn't affect everybody equally. There are winners and losers, and the people who generally win are the people who can afford to engage in international trade. "On average" everyone is better off, but that average hides a set of problems.

Posted by: Ace's liver at December 08, 2018 04:58 AM (h2Bdk)

874 Well if people are deciding now, with the current tarriffs, that it's not beneficial to trade with China... do I need a Nobel laureate to drop me the knowledge but it can be seen?

886 The VDH and Klavan articles brought up that gets ignored here. To many people who aren't leftists, Trump's style DOES hurt him. It goes further, some who support him are embarrassed by it. My wife feels like that, and in my experience, many women are especially prone to. (I'm not sure that, without the Kavanaugh hearings, she'd have bothered to vote.)

We, too, live in a bubble here. And insisting on MAGA purity makes no more sense to me than it does when the libertarians and neocons do the same.

891 One thing I've noticed is that people talking about Afghanistan never seem to remember the invasions that won. OK, we can't get away with the methods of Alexander or Genghis Khan. But the 2nd Afghan War was a British victory, after the usual initial embarrassments.

They went in without any intent of civilizing the Afghans. All they were after was what we would now call "regime change", to wit, Sher Ali had to go. Pick someone else to be your Tyrant of the Week.
