Gun Thread: All I Want for Christmas Pt. 2 [Weasel]

remington-ad scaled.jpg

And who doesn't want Christmas to last a lifetime? Hmmmm? Commies and Liberals, that's who!

Last weekend we had some fun talking about BB guns, something many of us started out with as kids, and which several of you mentioned still having to this day. This week let's take a look at the next step on the gun ownership ladder which for many was a .22 caliber rifle. This is the time when the good lessons you learned in the backyard shooting BBs begin to pay off!

stevens ad scaled.jpg
Santa delivering Guns!

At some point you probably put down your Daisy Red Ryder and started looking for something a little more powerful. Maybe a rifle to hunt squirrels or to shoot cans off or a fence rail. There are many possibilities with this great cartridge.

Pop some caps in asses for Christmas!

The 22LR cartridge was introduced by the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company in 1887, as a hybrid of the 22 Long and 22 Extra Long cartridges, falling between the two at 1.0" overall length. Bullet weights vary from 20gr to 40gr with a wide range of velocities from subsonic to nearly 2,000fps, and with a maximum effective range of about 150 yards. The rimfire 22LR cartridge is extremely economical to produce and for this reason has become a favorite of shooters around the world. The same cartridge used in rifles is also wildly popular for handgun shooters. It's often the introductory choice for new shooters due the negligible recoil and is used for plinking, hunting, pest control, marksmanship training and competition at all levels. It is a truly versatile round, and is a great option for the young and old alike.

Savage 19 Scaled.jpg
Savage 19 NRA Match c. 1920's

Here's an interesting rifle - the Savage Model 19 NRA Match. Designed to satisfy the demand from shooters trained on military bolt action rifles, the Model 19 was one of the first to capitalize on the civilian competitive shooting market. It's barrel and receiver are cut from a single block of steel and the apeture style rear sight is fully adjustable for windage and elevation. It's truly a competition rifle and is a lot of fun to shoot!! I have spent many an enjoyable afternoon plinking at a steel plate from 75 or 100 yards with this rifle and not worrying a bit about scores or group size or anything other than simply having a good time. It's also a great training rifle and some reports indicate several thousand were purchased by the military for basic marksmanship training purposes. In my opinion, these rifles are under appreciated in the collector's market and can sometimes be found for as little as a few hundered dollars.

One for Dad, too!!

But what's a good choice today? If you're buying for a little Moron, something a little more in the "general purpose" category might make sense. Fortunately, many options exist and today's buyer will find offerings from nearly every major manufacturer; including Savage, Remingtom, Browning, Ruger and others. In fact, so many choices exist with regard to design and function, it probably helps to have a good idea of the most likely application before heading to the gun store.

ruger 10_22 scaled.jpg
Ruger 10/22

Here's a great choice - the semi-automatic Ruger 10/22. Available with an array of features, prices for this superb little rifle generally start around $250. This is a rifle that anyone would be happy to see under the tree! The examples I have seen are well made and are good shooters.

Do you have a .22 and do you shoot it often? How many of you have kept the rifle you had growing up? When was the last time you went shooting just for the fun of it? How about ammo? Do you have a favorite, what is it and why?

Here's a cool video from a couple of weeks ago on the manufacture of 22LR ammunition. Check it out! Cool Video: 22 Manufacturing Process

Can you reload 22LR ammunition? Why, yes - yes you can! Although it seems like a complete pain in the ass, it apparantly can be done if you're really out of other options or just have some time to kill.

This Old Gun

22 caseless pic scaled.jpg
Neon Madman bitch slaps us with knowledge!

This week's old gun is once again comes to us from our ol pal Neon Madman, after having read last week's BB gun thread, thought he'd share from his collection. Neon madman tells us:

This is my Daisy VL .22 caseless cartridge rifle, the first production rifle that used a caseless cartridge . Daisy manufactured it in 1968 and 1969, making about 23,000 units in three models. The cartridge is a .22 bullet with a chunk of solid propellant on the back, and is ignited by a jet of compressed hot air. It was an ingenious system, but between the gun control efforts in 1968 and the fact that Daisy wasn't licensed to produce firearms, the company dropped it. I purchased this from the hardware store where I worked at the time (197 for $39.95, and later found a brick of 1000 rounds of ammunition. It has been fired three times, and in the safe since then.

Now how cool is that? I'd never even heard of this type of gun. Thanks Neon Madman!!

5 As a kid, Dad would take us to the Southern Pacific freight yards in downtown LA to pick out Christmas trees. They came in boxcars and were packed in ice that stood at least a foot deep on the railcar floors. The trees would be dripping wet. They probably came down the SP Coast line from Oregon. And all this was open to the public.

We would climb in to the boxcars to look them over. He had a limit of $3 for a 10-12 ft Douglas fir. "They wanted five bucks! It's highway robbery, I tell ya!" We would strap the tree to the top of the red and white Pontiac Super Chief wagon and drive home.

Dad, I wouldn't have the heart to tell you what I just paid for a 12 ft tree today...

6 22s are fun to shoot and as cheep as you can get for ammo, not a fan of relying on one for defense.

7 I have a few .22's, like you do.

I just bought a SIG 250 in .22 but it hasn't arrived yet.

Apart from that, I have been practicing with my new Ruger 10/22 takedown. The rifle only works with Ruger mags, sadly, but it's super portable. It breaks down and fits in a yoga mat bag. Sufficiently accurate and very easy to clean.

.22 is a filthy, dirty girl and needs lots of regular cleaning unlike my 9mm pistols.

I kinda wish I'd bought a M&P 22. I can't justify another .22 rifle, though.

11 The santa-themed bullets are wonderful.

Also, the Remmington ad is downright triggering. A white man talking on the phone to another white man is bad enough, but he's ordering a gun! But only because he took a shine to one he bought for a *child.* I am sure a school shooting is right around the corner in that charnel house of a town!

My, how times have changed. A good gun is a great Christmas present. Always has been.

Well well well. My first .22 lr rifle arrived yesterday!

It's a Rossi RS22 - just the same as Mossberg 702 but it has a better stock (sling mounts!).
I was just about to clean it before shooting it tomorrow but discovered that a shotgun cleaning rod is too fat][ to clear a .22 barrel. Imagine that!

Easy enough to get a .22 cleaning rod tomorrow.

I also got a Glock 17 and am eager to test that tomorrow!

35 It may not have the name "gravitas" of the Ruger 10/22, but my little Marlin 795 is just about perfect for me.

It is the same as their Model 60, except it has a detachable magazine and a composition stock (lighter weight). I have run many different brands of ammo through it, and not a single misfire yet. (knock on wood, er, composition plastic)

It is so doggone accurate that after I suck at hitting the target with other rifles and handguns, I pull it out and drive some nails, so I don't go away completely dejected.

A great example of American manufacturing. It's just a little .22, but I love it so.

for shits and giggles, i looked through their used gun offers, and found a "nearly new" Springfield M1A for $950.

yes, $950, and, by nearly new, they mean "essentially un-used", as it doesn't even have a primer ring on the bolt fact.

it will be home before Christmas.

my first gub, besides the Daisy that's still at my parents house was a Marlin Glenfield 22, that i still have. no idea why my parents bought it for me, as i have cheerfully forgotten most of the details of my less than wonderful childhood, but at least i have the gun.

When the gun grabbers come, I assume they will look around the house first. In the garage I have an overhead storage place with several old lawn chairs on top the the guns, all wrapped in blankets, and all in gun cases. I take them out and check them, and they are fine.

Oh yeah! That CCI video about the manufacturing process for 22 ammo really brings back the memories for me. I started out as a tool-and-diemaker and learned how to make all the various tooling for stuff like that. Swaging, forming, capping, piercing, all that stuff. Wow.

A lot of those machines are original from the '50's.

The noise. The dirt. The danger and caution that you have to observe...glad to see those industries and the people are still around somewhere.

I need a cigarette now. BRB.

81 My first rifle, a Remington 572 ADL Fieldmaster. Bought it used for $35, circa 1973.

USAF and poverty in the Carter years, I had to sell it, and have regretted it ever since. But, it was sell or starve, so that was that.

My favorite .22 rifle now sits in my safe.

CZ 452 Lux. Bought in '04. It's insanely accurate, and with subsonic ammo out of it's 24 in. barrel, it's nearly as quiet as if it wore a suppressor.

If you find one for sale, buy it. They're that good.

But a couple of boxes of ammo and taking my time will provide an afternoon of fun. It's also probably the best rifle teaching tools ever made

131 First rifle: Remington 512 Sportmaster .22.

Bolt action tubular repeater.

Got stolen out of my apartment. I inherited it from my dad, so, you can imagine why I might miss it.

Anyway, funny thing you should mention 22.

Yesterday was our departmental Christmas party. Wife wasn't feeling well, so, I dropped of some food, Mac N Cheese (page 164 of TDG, though, the recipe has since been updated) and my white elephant gift, which was a box of CCI Minimags, 100 rounds. (I don't shoot .22 much any more, though I've a CZ 512)

Anyway, I know guys have .22's and, I was sort of hoping the gift might also annoy the head of my department, who I don't much care for. Win/win!

Anyway, I'll find out tomorrow if my gift raised any eyebrows as I couldn't stick around for the festivities.

142 I'm restoring a Savage 99EG in .300 Savage. Have a new walnut stock blank and fore end. Almost has the ballistics of a .308, just a little softer. A bit of pitting in the barrel, nothing serious. The long range strategic plan is to finish the stock and fore-end this winter.

My problem is that I freeze when it comes to checkering. I have all the checkering tools, but when it comes time to score that nicely finished woodwork, I just wimp out. A mental block. In other words, I don't think that Purdey would offer me a job. So I'm debating whether to leave it un-checkered, or to send it out to a pro.

You'll probably want to replace the trigger with something a little lighter; stock it's about 7-8 lbs (or at least, that's what it feels like). Otherwise, I like mine just fine.

When I was a Boy Scout in the '60s, these were the favorite at scout camp. A beautiful old rifle and pretty unique.

158 Actually I have no .22 rifle at all. Friend who helps run the action
rifle match I shoot is going to lend me his 10-22, or AR in .22, for
the next non-centerfire rifle match (the match alternates between
centerfire, and mixed rimfire/shotgun rimfire/centerfire formats). I
actually would prefer all centerfire - it's the only match where I get
to shoot my M-1s and Mosins and M-1 carbines at steel, with movement and
use of cover, etc.

I have a Single Six (with the 22 mag
second cylinder), and an M and P 22 pistol. Single Six was the first
gun I shot, about 10 years old, with my oldest brother, who's been a gun
guy since waaaay back then.

The M and P 22 is very nice - it's a slightly smaller version of their standard M and P polymer semi handgun platform (might be like a compact, not sure - though it seems close to "full size"). Shoots very nicely. Have tried about 5 flavors of ammo in it, no systematic problems. .22 semi-auto, so there's the occasional stove-pipe or some other loading/ejecting issue, but very reliable. Highly recommend for anyone looking for an M and P practice platform, or a just a nice .22 semi.

Like shooting from a snow globe.

The DE in .44 Mag not so much.

I think dollar for dollar and pound for pound, Vortex is putting out the best balance of price AND performance (not "vs" performance) on the market today.

I know the pros in the Sandbox tend towards Nightforce, the higher end Leupolds, Schmidt & Bender and Zeiss.

So, I'm curious. Ask your Vortex friends for an update as to their equipment being used in-theater. ESPECIALLY more in the high-end scope world, but yeah, let's hear how their Red/Green dot stuff is doing, too.

174 Cannibal Bob, as Mark said - the 870 already is a home defense platform, basically. What's the barrel length? The 18.5" is generally handier in closed spaces, obviously, but longer barrels are fine too (don't know your situation).

As Mark said, get a light for it (there are various after-market light mounts for that model), maybe a saddle for extra ammo. You're in business.

But two things. Practice. Not just the shooting part, the loading/reloading part. I recommend getting dummy rounds for reloading practice (dummybullet.com has great ones). And ammo. If it's for home defense, buy the appropriate ammo. I'd recommend the reduced recoil buckshot, and reduced recoil slugs, available from various companies (Hornady, Federal prominent among them). Basically it's "law enforcement" ammo of the type used in police shotguns. (ammoseek.com, use appropriate search terms, you'll find lots of sources and best prices)

195 Blake - the action rifle matches are shot on a private club main range, at hanging plates at 100, 175, and 200 yds - with movement, use of cover, a few "weak hand" (left-handed for most) shots, etc. Also, there's a separate, large shelter with big berm inside at 50 yds, they'll put paper silhouette targets up at that range, sometimes we advance and shoot on those (shot placement counts in that case).

Then there's the pit - as it sounds, a sunken area, high berms all around. Paper targets obviously. Movement/use of cover, sometimes shoot from inside a truck cab (quite a sensation shooting an M-38, a Mosin "carbine" - they just lopped some length off 91/30 barrels - from inside a truck cab - I double up with plugs/muffs for that one).

One standing joke at these matches is when I hit a 100-yd plate squarely - the things fly back violentely and swing for 30 seconds. The RO will call out "hit" - and my standard response - "are you sure?" As there can be a fair amount of trouble even determining whether the AR guys' shots are hits (90% of shooters are shooting ARs in .223) due to the light rounds, especially on the 175 and 200 yd plates, it always gets a laugh.

201 About that maximum effective range for .22lr you quoted...

I have had considerable success shooting at standard 19x30 silhouettes at an actual range of 312 yards. With CCI MiniMags (40 gr) and 40 gr Auila Super Extras out of my Marlin XT-22 bolt gun I have scored between 75% and 92% hits - depending on what the wind is doing that day. At that range 22 is all about wind reads since a 5mph cross wind will blow a Mini-Mag about 42 inches (1.9 mils) or so off line (depending on the air density). Even at that range a .22lr is still potentially lethal.

Posted by: An Observation at December 09, 2018 08:34 PM (Wf/fS)

202 Jim ,
I have many Vortex scopes along with Nightforce, Schmidt un Bender, Ziess, etc, etc.

I concur on bang for buck. My Razor (Gen 1) is a very good scope. I have transitioned from MOA from years of Fullbore shooting to MOA (workplace demands) and have not lost anything in the process. Vortex have made that slightly easier due to the reticles that they offer. My thinking is why pay over the odds for the best glass, best turrets, etc when you get a reticle that covers the target at long range. A hole where the middle of the cross hair normally would be for the win. Fill the hole with target, pull tit, watch target drop.

205 Cannibal, dummy rounds = cartridges (any caliber, centerfire or shotgun) reloaded without propellant or primers. So, they're physically identical to normal rounds, thus will load/eject/handle the same - but they're inert. Perfect for practicing loading/reloading, and checking function, without shooting or having a live round in the chamber.

Now that I reload I make my own, have them for every gun I own.

As Blue Bird noted, they can also be used in various ways for drills and training, at the range, combined with live ammo.

207 First one was a Rem Nylon; sold that to a roommate. Many years later, bought a 10/22 semiauto, then spent a few hundred on a Clerke bull-barrel, a 3X9, a jeweled trigger-set and a Hogue overmolded stock.
With a bipod at 50 yards, 5 rounds, one hole. I can't believe it, either, but.... After 25 years, I had to replace the ejector spring.

Anyhow. Just bought a Ruger American bolt-action .22LR for the g-kids to use. Still bare-naked iron sights, 'cause they have better eyeballs.

211 One standing joke at these matches is when I hit a 100-yd plate squarely - the things fly back violentely and swing for 30 seconds.

Heh, Yeah, I've nailed a few poppers with the Garand it levels them unlike the 556. Anyway, thanks and I'm jealous, because I'd love to shoot those kinds of matches. Unfortunately, though, not readily available in Commiefornia, near as I can tell.

212 I saved up and bought a Marlin 39A when I was 13 in 1966. I still have it and it's still a tack-driver. My son handed me a Marlin 336 to match this father's day, to replace the Winchester '94 I left with my daughter in N.C.

213 201 About that maximum effective range for .22lr you quoted...

Oh, I believe it! I suspect the sources for the 'effective range' business are considering the average shooter, and it sounds like you're well past that point. I repeated it here because I felt like I should list *some* max effective number, and 150 sounded reasonable for a plinking distance.
Thanks for the input!

214 To stay on topic regarding .22's:

I only have one rifle - an 1890 Winchester pump, in .22 short.

A "gallery gun", made in 1916.

Maybe one day I'll buy a grown-up's rifle.
Kinda doubt it. Mouse guns are my niche.

215 199 I still love the .22LR and still have two. My dad bought a .22 bolt action from Sears for my brother and me. My brother still has it. I think it was made by Marlin. This was back in 1965. I think my brother should give it back to me.

217 Almost bought a surplus Polish .22 trainer rifle for the Mosin-Nagant platform a few years ago. Think they're all sold out from vendors but occasionally pop up on the private market. Thing is, I only consider buying a gun if I have a real use for it/particular interest in it/need for it. In this case, thanks to buying so much surplus 54R when it was dirt cheap, there's actually not that much $$ incentive to get a .22 practice platform. I just shoot the real thing for practice.

And it's all "practice", as I have no plans to be involved in any land wars, or other sorts, any time soon. And Mosins and home defense are not a preferred operational or legal combination.

Could be that we are. My absolute favorite rifle bore is a 6.5... it's just that mine is the Swede in the 6.5x55 chambering.

Not to say I won't go over to the Creedmore.

Ruger Precision Rifle is an object of pure lust-quest.

And that's when I'll step up into the Razor series of Vortex scope, too.

Love my Viper though. It's 2nd focal plane, for the same reason it's MOA. I prefer the finer MOA reticle hashes vs. "dots", and again, I "think" in 2nd focal plane, even "rangefinding" quite effectively at a known magnification.

And don't diss the open, partridge type rifle sights, either. They can with practice, yield some amazingly tight groups, all without obstructing the target itself.

Anyway, there is a really cool rifle match run in Tuscon, AZ. More of a two gun match, rifle-pistol, that I keep telling myself I'm going to try out.

The club I belong to used to run rife matches once of twice a year, but with the changes in the laws and having the local Sheriff's investigating one of our members put a chill on our rifle matches.

232 Jim,
Dots as in the MIL- dot really are a waste of time and target. Trying to range a target in the 1980's fine, today with laser rangefinder now redundant. MIL scope with fine hash marks and graduations are the way to go especially for long range. One qualification , there absolutely MUST be indicative numbering on the reticle. Otherwise you are trying to count fine hash marks while looking at wind, sort out range and maybe a moving target. I keep losing my place without a reference especially on a busy Hourus style scope. Again no middle cross hair, just a small hole.

241 Really old 22s are so useful and fun. My friend and I taught his little boys the basics of shooting with our muzzleloaders. As a dessert, they got to shoot their great-grandfather's gallery gun with 22 shorts and a little single shot for 22lr, another pawn shop special. I cut back the rear stock to fit them. Those rifles were light enough for kids and made them feel 'grown-up' since they didn't need supports to fire them.

On reading a bit more about it, the hot air to ignite the propellant was produced by compressing it, something that Daisy knew a little bit about.

There's always a chance, it's just that like you said, it's a TON of work. And I've had my hands full with....work. *sigh*

Several of us have tried like hell to "imagine" various .22 rifle match formats, but it's proven (so far) futile, as a great many people simply don't have access to ranges greater than a mere 25 yards.

Also, those same ranges MOSTLY don't allow "position" shooting. You're stuck shooting from a bench, most often.

Then, there's iron vs. scopes. Another hurdle.

So, if there's going to be another Postal Match, I'm thinking same rules and format as the original.

Is it the best? Likely not.

But it does give access to "the match" to the greatest number of Morons n' 'Ettes, and that's really the MOST important thing about it.

279 Late to the party as usual. Arizona time.

Learnt rifle shootin' on a Marlin 60 in early teens. Moved up to a Savage-Anschutz model 64 in high school and shot indoor 50 yard target matches for a couple of years. Not as nice as the 54 but loved it anyway. Sold it for books and food in the lean college years for stoopid cheap. Regret it to this day, of course.

Now I have a 10/22 with a cheap scope for kicks, a stainless Ruger Mark II Target with 6.875" tapered barrel, and a blued Single-Six Bisley with 7.5" barrel and extra .22 mag cylinder. Mag cylinder is from a different gun but indexes correctly and is a hoot to shoot.

284 I wanted to pass this on. The Winchester 700 Long Range in .300 Win Mag is a notoriously inaccurate rifle. Hard to see why; Fiberglass bedded stock, free floated barrel etc. Sadly out of the box it is about a 2.5 moa rifle. I have figured out why; it has crown problems. The solution is really simple. I bought a Khantrol bolt on muzzle brake and the accuracy problems vanished when I installed it. The Khantrol MB covers up a lot of the crown and the controlled expansion of gasses inside the break cause the bullets to fly true. The rifle is now easily sub moa.

The rifle, scope (SWFA fixed 10 power Mil-quad) mounts, and muzzle brake all came to about $1200. It out shot a $7000 rifle chambered also in .300 Win Mag, with a $3000 scope on it. The guy on the table next to me had that, and we talked going down range to check our targets. He was none too pleased when he saw my 10 shot group was a single elongated hole while his didn't have any rounds even touching.

If she can get somebody to agree with her to do that, I'll be happy to file a felony complaint with the FBI about them. Agreeing with somebody to oppress people's Constitutional rights is a felony violation of 18 U.S. Code 241. By the way the agreement alone is a felony, they don't have to pass any laws or anything.

Club where I RO and this other one where I shoot matches do not police anything other their own rules. Fairly sure there is no legal exposure for the clubs if, say, some insane, Nazi gun-nut (ya know, the typical gun-owner) uses some 20-ROUND MAGAZINES IN HIS ASSAULT RIFLE !!!! whew, sort of faint there, such insanity scares me ....... and I know this sort of thing has been carefully considered by the club's lawyers.

We get that sort of question fairly often. Our answer - we police our own safety rules and SOPs aggressively. We police nothing else.

327 I'm the odd one out on Remington Thunderbolt .22 ammo.

My Browning Buckmark seems to like it a great deal, and with no misfires or other faults.

The CZ 452 Lux though, loves CCI Mini-Mags, and will hold right at 1 MOA with iron sights at 100 yards, and just a wee bit larger at 125 yards.

150 yards though, and the group becomes a "pattern", alas.

I'm going to have to try some real MATCH ammo in the CZ sometime, just to see what it'll really DO.

328 Not a lot of people voiced opinions on 22 ammo. Maybe next week in the comments?

My crappy shooting can't justify "good" (say Eley Club or better) ammo so I've standardized on Federal 711B and Federal 719 and stock up when I find either on sale. I was using 719 in the 10/22 with a Green Mountain barrel but recently tried the 711B. The grouping at 25 yards (indoor range) was much better but had like 50% FTEs. I think I'll switch to a reduced power recoil spring and then won't need the 719 for much of anything. Well, come to think of it, the CMMG AR conversion probably needs high-vel.

MAKE it your thing, then, ma'am.

Here's what I mean.

You design a jewelry piece, similar to an enameled lapel pin.

Make it so it works as a lapel pin, pendant, bracelet charm or other all-around jewelry piece.

You're the designer, but here's what it needs to convey.

The Ace of Spades Gun Thread.

Inclusive of all Morons & 'Ettes, all types, actions and calibers.

You might just end up with your largest series order, yet.

Work up say, two to five "designs", and let us vote on the most desired option?

This will be a well, duhhh comment but in addition to the crazy/evil it shows, I was very surprised at how young they all looked.

361 I perused National Review a bit today. First time in a long time. I knew that place had gone left, but ho lee fuk. If I hadn't known what/who I was reading it could easily have been Vox or HuffPo.

363 Well things did not turn out as planned for the bad character.

A the target started to turn so the scissors in the back turned into scissors at the base of the neck.

B the target is taller so not a lot of downward momentum with the strike

C there is now a dog barking.

364 Hogmartin.. I bought some and then ended up having to buy a drill to make a hole in the bottom. It took some work but I did make a casing then glued bling to it and made a necklace but I wasn't happy with it. I need to spend some time on it.

366 Well, my slow-cooker meal is yummy. A small pre-marinated pork roast, bag of baby red potatoes, cut up carrot and turnip, some pot barley, and onion soup mix. Enough water to cover, plus 6 hours.

Oh! Must have been some other secondary character, then.

368 Kevin Williamson is still at it attacking deplorables. Turns out he didn't learn a fucking thing after his 5 seconds at the Atlantic.

369 Guess I will have to wait til tomorrow guys. I'm beat and gotta work tomorrow.

370 Cya Jewells.

Back to writing now that we have cleared up the confusion of secondary characters.

deep-fried bacon.

Maybe cut the case head off at the base for a disc-shaped lapel pin or earring or something? Solder the mount onto the primer pocket on the 'inside'.

375 Jewels, how's this?

Ace symbol, but overlaid with a target and group from the Postal Match a couple years back. Pick one that's very clear and sharp, that would "image" well.

At the base of the ACE's "stem", meld with a casting of the letters "ONT".

And much as a military Marksman's medal has "rockers" that hang on wee small chain links under the primary medal...

...per Bob the Bilderberg's quip, have one "rocker" be an canoe displayed upside down.

Participants in the original Postal Match can have a rocker that'd say "AoS / PM '15" or whatever year it was. And just put the correct years for any subsequent year-rockers.

Not that its gotta end up this way...just trying to seed the field with ideas for you, ma'am!

376 I had a friend in the Manson gang (did not participate or know about the killings) My closest neighbor to the north was Spann's ranch. (I was born and raised in Chatsworth.) I rented horses from them, and once held a Stevens double 12 on them. And yeah, I was a teen and they weren't much older than me.

I have a key ring I made when I was ~16, with a M98, 7.92x57 empty cartridge. Not too common among 16 year old drivers.

379 My father gave me his paternal grandfather Stevens Tip-Up rifle which has an 1864 patent date and came in .32 long rifle. Fortunately, it is center-fire. My gunsmith friend checked it over for safety, and bought .32-40 cartridges (until recently, ammo for it was scarce to non-existent). Cowboy shooting has caused ammo such as this to make a resurgence. A few weeks ago, my sons and myself were able to do what my father was never able to do....go out and shoot it. It was a great rifle to shoot....extremely accurate and smooth. With open sights at 50 yards, we were able to shoot consistently tight patterns. It was a very special day.

381 That old ad made me tear up.

I have on the top shelf of my closet a Remington 69a-22 my grandpa got for Christmas in the 30s. He gave it to me this past summer, and died in the fall.

383 "Can you reload 22LR ammunition"

Another bit of info most people don't seem to be aware of: with a set of dies, a spool of soft lead wire, and a bunch of spent .22LR cases, you can make your own jacketed .223 projectiles.
The dies aren't exactly cheap - about $350 or more, IIRC, but knowing that it's possible is somewhat relevant from a comprehensive DIY standpoint.
Similarly - but in a bit more of a hacky fashion - it's possible to re-prime spent metallic primers and re-use them with a fair bit of success, if you're desperate enough.

385 I received a made in 1961, Single Shot, bolt action, full choke Springfield M-951 .410 Shotgun in 1963 for Christmas. At ten years old it was My first firearm to hunt Rabbits and squirrels with my Dad.I still have it and hunt with it, Dad and Mom bought it at the Western Auto store that was in our town.Recently I replaced the extractor on it.I'd say that was a good investment.Three Christmases ago I gave the oldest Grandson a .12 gauge single shot and last Christmas his brother a .22 lr. Rifle.
