For Those of You Who Hate Will Ferrell and Have Been Asking the Career Fairy to Take His Career Away, Your Wish May be Granted

No one is talking much about the Holmes & Watson parody and there's not much advertising for it.

I think this may be a one-cheek sneak release.

12 Ted Kennedy can kill his girlfriend and he's the "Lion of the Senate". Reporters write articles explaining how the deceased would appreciate all the wonderful programs he enacted if she weren't, you know, dead.

But Donald Trump pays off a gal to keep quiet and that's an impeachable offense?

Ironically, a Republican paying hush money to a girlfriend isn't a campaign violation--but the malicious prosecution as such is actually an illegal campaign donation to Democrats. The only ones making any illegal campaign contribution are the prosecutors themselves.

43 Ferrell's funny in some movies. Stranger than Fiction he plays straight. The ice skating movie was funny, too. I'm probably one of the few who liked both Zoolander and the sequel.

But "Holmes and Watson" looks dreadful. Obvious jokes that fall flat. Jokes that are funny only because they're topical ("selfie" with an old-fashioned camera ... ha?).

I'm a fan of vulgar humor, but it has to be well-done. The Brothers Grimsby was side-splitting. Spy is on my top 10 list.
This is shite.

Beyond that, the guy sucks. He's not a leader in a comedy. Hollywood has been trying to make him a leader in a comedy and every time, it has failed.

Even Alan Covert has successfully pulled off a lead in a comedy. "Grandma's Boy". I suggest everyone here save the money and time they would spend on this new horseshit and go watch Grandma's Boy instead. You will thank me.

109 "Will Ferrel is the new Chevy Chase."

I was going to post that, but then I realised that would be unfair... to Chase. Chase was a successful lead in several 80s movies: 'Funny Farm', 'Christmas Vacation'. Ferrell got nothin' that lasted over ten minutes.

Instead it focuses almost entirely on the misery instead of the actual hopeful story it should be.

training class. He's offered to let me out of it if I come in all night

220 I saw the trailer for this a weeks ago but couldn't finish it. I don't hate Ferrell and think he's had some funny moments but his schtick does grow thin through an entire movie; big and loud does not always equal funny.

I like a more subtle comedic style, case in point, Jack Nicholson in As Good As it Gets is very funny. Probably helps that he's an asshole in real life but his dialogue was a great compliment to his mannerisms in the movie.

Pimp? Are you listening to my story?

But Walberg was the real surprise in that story. And Steve Coogan was stellar--besides some legit deadpan by a comedy vet Michael Keaton (who got into comedy to act--which explains his early splash in comedy films eclipsed by his totally serious films, later on).

well, that's the thing tho...I think the real scenario was this...cohen got a knock on his door by some playmate/pr0n star looking to get paid. He shrugged, paid them, got them to sign an NDA and just went about his business without ever contacting trump because that's their arrangement.

Cohen, as a lawyer, had no idea that it couldn't be a campaign finance law violation because:

1. it isn't
2. he's a bad lawyer
3. he doesn't own a crystal ball

plus

4. he didn't really think about campaign finance law.

so, when the SDNY goons got him to confess to whatever, it's clearly goes against any paper trail out there. like him submitting a bill to PDT asking for some cashola.

The Ana Navarro with the bizarre notion that the Oscars *just* got political because Trump, and also, are required to call out his lying and racism and thoughtcrimes because...I don't knw why, but the person heading up the Oscars lynchmob -- er, telecast must be sufficiently cleansed of past sins before doing so.

In a film full of bullshit, unbelievable scenes, the worst is the climax, where the temporarily paroled Irish terrorist runs up to the highly trained FBI HRT sniper and says "gimme your rifle". And the stupid Feeb HANDS OVER THE RIFLE WITHOUT A THOUGHT. Fuck.

Plus, there was a missed opportunity for badassery when the former terrorist chick gone straight shoots Willis. Instead of getting all weepy and weak, they should have had her walk up, look down in contempt and say "what? did you think I'd forgotten HOW?" while he bleeds out from his sucking chest wound.

Not as meh as the first totally-slack conflict-lite movie, and actually picks up interest in the story. if you magically change the laws to make NDA's campaign contributions, then there's a whole can of worms.

And that requires making EVERYTHING a campaign contribution once a person declares their candidacy.

Buying a new tie? Campaign contribution, because you want to look nice.

Buying dinner? Campaign contribution, becafuse you can't run if you starve to death.

If Trump had bought people off in the past, or had a policy to, even when he was just a celebrity businessman, it's obvious that it didn't depend on his candidacy at all.

But all this overlooks the simple point that Mueller is supposed to be looking at ROOOSHIN CULLOOSHIN! and has accomplished zip on that score.

One of my favorite movies with him is Sam Mendes' Road to Perdition--which is awesome anyway. Law shines even as a sort of shriveled, pathetic, balding hitman. It was kind of an odd role for him. Also Hanks and Newman were excellent in that movie--I think that's my favorite Mendes movie.

Apparently Cohen did not bill Trump correctly for the hush money. And as it was campaign season, this somehow makes it a campaign contribution.

that even though there is tape of Trump saying make it legal, do it right, somehow comes back on Trump.

413 Grindlewald continued: Depp was his median brilliant--but sort of locked into the role of the Seductive Villain or Villain Orator that Rowling, as a fledgling screenwriter didn't know how to break him out of. I'm most disappointed in David Yates, who I've always championed in the HP films, also not giving the Dynamic Depp a break-out scene. (The director is the *chief actor* of a production).

However, Law, as a Young Dumbledore was unarguably the chief figure of the film and the history that Rowling is trying to backfill. And, while I wondered throughout the HP series when Law was going to enter as a character, it seems that they may have reserved him as the most suitable actor to fill the role of a young Dumbledore.

I don't really know what is going on with Yates, though. We saw an introduction of *performance* into HPs 5-7b. Thompson, Oldman, and Ricks--some of the best performers tasked in the HP series--got scenes that they could really create in (probably thanks to veteran indie Kloves). Perhaps he just feels to owing to Rowling, who is struggling as a film writer, IMO.

Too frenetic, too energetic. Dumbledore should not be out of sorts, IMO.

By the same token, Rowling did not finish the series as she began and has been taking things in a different direction before the main series even ended, so what do I know?

454 The idea of a moronic Sherlock Holmes has been done before in the excellent, underrated 80s movie, Without a Clue. It featured Michael Caine as Holmes and Ben Kingsley as Watson.

The hook was that Holmes was created out of whole cloth by Watson, who was the actual deductive genius. Once his reading public clamored to see the actual Holmes, Watson hired an alcoholic actor (Caine) to play the part. It's a really funny movie and I can't imagine this abortion with Will Ferrell will top it in any way.

Because 34 Senate No Votes would give him Carte Blanche. The power to refuse the Ninth Circuit. The power to Run Wild.

And if he Has It, but won't Use It ? That's just the same as don't Have It. Holding the Top Trump until the last trick, letting lower cards take tricks, is the kind of thing I've seen "Smart Players" do more than once. "Smart Player" being in their own minds.

475 John Pinette was funny as hell, working mostly without profanity or politics. Gaffigan is one of the funniest guys out there, again no politics or much profanity. Seinfeld, perennial face-hurting comedian--no politics, little profanity, until near the end with light profanity--heck I've never shrunk at profanity--if you're funny.

I think John Mulaney is tremendously funny--and I just groan at his osmotic political stuff. It is funny, though, in a different sense. His first two specials were outstanding without political humor. And his last, he take shots at Trump, while becoming more mannered that he ever had been. It's like he's adopted the idea of what he should be like. He managed to be funny, but he's like Harrison Bergeron, taking on the weights of the crowd to not be as much of a standout.

THat got a legit L.O.L. from me.

Spent a lot of time working with some libs that I rather like, and overhearing their discussion of that movie. It's funny how they see the setup Judge puts to that movie and blame the reproductoid conservatives--but fail to see that most of the ills of society do not come from, say, "Papa farmer urgency" but cosmopolitan slackery.

They actually described that movie as a "cautionary tale"! LOL. It's a social commentary--and too farcical to be what reality actually becomes.
