Think Macron considers surprises to be good right now?

Ace and others have been writing here about the Yellow Jacket protests in France this week, which were expected to escalate today. I have seen some interesting information in the AoSHQ comments this morning, too. Skynews reports that tear gas and water cannons have been used. There are several dramatic photos at the link. Weren't we just told that Trump was a war criminal or something for using tear gas? How could this be happening under Macron?

The Wall Street Journal had a headline up reading, "Globtrotting Macron overlooked swelling anger at home". On Facebook, they referred to him as being "Astride the globe". How long do you think THAT will last?

Richard Fernandez made the following observation about this unexpected preference cascade:

Macron, the media -- nobody saw it coming. Nobody really predicts anything. Pearl Harbor, Hitler's invasion of Russia, the fall of the USSR, 9/11, 2008, Brexit or Hillary's loss. The really important info is not what you know but what you've ignored.

Bush the Elder didn't seem to like surprises

Speaking of the fall of the USSR, Michael Walsh wrote this about Bush the Elder:

Cautious, diplomatic, pedantic ("the Helsinki Final Act")--this was classic Bush, a man who prized "stability" over everything else and did all he could to maintain the status quo. Why this should be surprising is unclear. Bush had been Director of Central Intelligence at the end of the Ford Administration and like most DCIs, and the agency in general, had evolved a modus vivendi with the KGB and the other enemy intelligence services. Each side knew where the boundaries were, and nobody actually wanted a "final" victory.

The last thing Bush wanted, or could handle, was the sudden collapse of the postwar bipolar world. His disgraceful "New World Order" speech came on March 6, 1991, even before the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and the end of the Soviet Union. With its chilling echoes of Hitler's "New World Order" speech of 1941--which White House functionary approved that phraseology?--it made clear where Bush's sympathies lay.

Walsh was in Eastern Europe before the Fall of the Wall, and has some interesting observations in addition tho those above.

A surprise from Chicago

I got a little surprise of my own this week. Glenn Reynolds linked a column from the Chicago Tribune about a young condidate who is getting a lesson in the Chicago Way. It is written as a David vs. Goliath story:

The David is David Krupa, 19, a freshman at DePaul University who drives a forklift part time. He's not a political powerhouse. He's just a conservative Southwest Side teenager studying political science and economics who got it in his head to run for alderman in a race that pits him against the most powerful ward organization in Chicago.

The Goliath is the 13th Ward Democratic Organization run by House Speaker Michael J. Madigan, aka Boss Madigan, the most powerful politician in the state. Boss Madigan has long hand-picked his aldermen. He likes them loyal and quiet. The current silent alderman of the 13th Ward is Marty Quinn.

Is there something I don't know about the Chicago Tribune? I was surprised by the strong description of "Boss Madigan". And of the corruption in this case, which involves getting people to sign notarized retractions of signatures they never made. This is apparently a felony.

Anyway, is this kind of writing expected from the Chicago Tribune or is this something new?

I have no idea, but there does seem to be a trend toward certain characters becoming "WOKE" ... to things like China not really being interested in global "free trade" and world peace.


China has from day one (with a little help from their friends like Clintons) planned to use our "naivete" (on capitalism being a magic potion for liberty) ... use our dreamy visions to conquer US, building their military and an alternative to BrettonWoods like economic/monetary/military hegemony we have largely enjoyed.


Even Clinton/Merkel have recently made concessions (at least in word, not in deed) ... that borders can't be completely open (but only cuz it might lead to the "rubes" electing more Trumps).


Royko exposed The Boss back around 1970, and nothing much changed. That was Richard Daly, then his son, then Madigan acquired "Boss" status after a long apprenticeship. But IL just elected a "mob" governor ... after Madigan thwarted any efforts by Rauner to make any change in their mafia rule and IL massive debt.


I'm kinda hoping for a new ice age to bury them in snow ... since nothing else is changing for the better, now that they took the governorship.


Maybe the Tribune is challenging Madigan's Boss status, or maybe they are just "normalizing" that status, idk.

My opinion is that all of the hysteria is bullshit. The temperature has been in the mid 40's all week. The ground is warm, the pavement is warm.

I expect that we will indeed get some snow overnight, there will video and etc., but by Tuesday or Wednesday, no one will remember that it happened. This ain't the blizzard of '93.

93 So here is the "am I not being a proper lady" conundrum:

So, bf suggested we spend New Years together (not just that night, but like the weekend before into New Years) which I thought sounded like a good idea. I agreed. We said we'd tentatively plan on it.

BUT....in the meantime, this was weeks ago he suggested it, and I have heard nothing since. No mention of it at all.

Herein lies the rub. Historically, I am the planner. No matter which of us suggests our weekends together, I am usually the one that takes the reins and does the planning because 1) I like doing that kind of stuff and 2) I'm good at it.

Well, I was advised by some friends that I needed to be a "proper lady" and "let him lead" on this. It was his suggestion, and as a woman, I should let him put the work in and that guys actually like to work for it, so to speak. So they told me NOT to do the planning thing, or even bring it up, and let him do it.

But the only thing is......if I have always been the planner, he might be waiting for me to get the ball rolling. Also, he is very much a weekend to weekend type planner. If I do nothing, it very well could be like, 12/27 and he's like, "Well I'll see you in a couple of days"

Were my friends right, and I should just lay back and wait for him to be proactive? Or did they completely steer me in the wrong direction?

He was both an Assistant Attorney General and then AG under GWHB. Also worked for Reagan for a bit, and before that, for the CIA. Both times the Senate confirmed him without a roll call vote, and the Judiciary Committee didn't give him much grief. He was 41 when he was AG the first time. So now, at 68, and having done this job once before without controversy, they're going to give him grief? Of course, because Trump. Everything goes along just fine until some change makes everything go to hell. Then it sorts out again.

The problem is that Socialists of all sorts aren't happy with equilibrium and keep pushing all the time. Either because they have some goal in mind to engineer, or the totalitarian need to be incredibly intrusive and controlling on every citizen's life to make sure they know who to bow to (in the name of equality and fellowship) so no equilibrium can be found.

The Tribune has been thru a number of ownership changes since then, but Kass has been with the paper since '83, and has bearded the Chicago Machine from time to time.

There is an express line at Joliet State Prison for Chicago aldermen; hell, they have their own floor there and valet service.

The tank probably has a bladder with a hole in it, and the water is trapped between the inner tank wall and the bladder. If you are discarding it (it's not fixable), it won't hurt to drill a drain hole or two.

This is one reason I distrust climate "science" as it is currently. They are continually coming up with new factors that they were apparently unaware of previously ("the ocean is hiding the warming", "winters are colder because the polar vortex is warmer", etc.). Eventually you start to wonder how many other factors are they still unaware of that might falsify their predictions?

I grew up in Park Ridge, and used to like Royko a lot. I moved to Atl. in '86, but have read a fair amount of Kass's stuff. They seem a lot alike.

Yeah, I love how Trump was criticized for pulling out of the Paris Accord, then France enacted the taxes required by the accord, and riots ensued. So I guess those who criticized Trump think we don't have enough riots in the US.

442 FOX has as bad a case of TDS as any other channel. It just happens to be on for background noise and I just picked up "when the RUSSIANS were interfering with the election" stated as a matter of fact with the overall gist of the story being that Team Trump was colluding with RUSSIA... Mueller just needs the proof. If it weren't for obstruction of justice he'd have confessions already. Aside from FOX repeating gross conjecture as fact, all I caught was that Mueller has EVIDENCE, but Manafort and Cohen not confessing is keeping him from getting the PROOF.

I think all the put downs of "FAUX NEWS!" and "FOX NEWS viewers are dumb" finally got to FoxNews so they are like. "Oh yeah? We'll show you how much we hate Trump!" That plus all Fox gets in terms of ads are My Pillow, William Devane hawking gold and catheters...

A lot of advertisers know that Fox pulls in more viewers--but not the "right kind" of viewers. This is also why Kimmel and Colbert get away with all the Trump hate. Their viewers have more money to spend.

It's not fair but this is the way it is.....

Does anyone on these shows ever ask WHY Manafort and Cohen don't sing for Mueller? Does it ever dawn on anyone that maybe, just maybe, neither has the goods on Trump?
But they have their narrative and they won't give it up--even if the facts invalidate it....

453 Kass is the one reason to still read the Trib. Unfortunately, he often gets stuck behind the Trib paywall for that reason (at least he used to; many of these papers seem to have policies that change from week to week!)

Kass has been writing against the Democrat corruption for ages and ages. He's coined terms to describe it; he's a big reason some of this stuff is even known. He's famous for his writing against Rahm Emanuel, but it was news - and funny - that as Kass started referring to Emanuel as the "Rahmfather", someone did up a nice artwork-quality movie poster of Emanuel as the Rahmfather... Emanuel saw it and liked it so much that Kass gifted him one. Chicago politics, I tell you!
