I want to super mega ultra apologize for my latest outburst.
I understand that I upset a number of folks, and I want to especially apologize to those folks. They've been through hell and come out the other side, and it's terrible of me to equate my problems with their real life suffering.
All I can say in my defense is that I've never been in these circumstances and I don't know how to properly react. (Again, a pretty pathetic excuse, but the only one I have.)
What I want to emphasize is this: ignore me. Please. That's been the best strategy for the last ten years (at least) of my life.
All of you, all of us, have problems. PROBLEMS, for emphasis. My problems are no way greater than yours. Everything keeps getting worse, but it's still less than most of you folks have suffered.
I have been, and always shall be...nothing. At best, a footnote somewhere.

Just a final update on my mom. She is doing well, and was released from the hospital today. She was in a little longer than expected, as they found a blood clot in her leg. She'll be staying with my sister for a while to recuperate (it helps that my sister is a PT).

It would be rather permanent, but you might consider defogger repair paint. Any auto parts store. It's just powdered copper in a lacquer.

Wow, that is surprising, but maybe it shouldn't be. I see the article says "temporary". Hell, I'd just slather up Miley's heat sink with butter all over if it would last, but I'm leery of that.
She has a Toshiba Satellite C55 laptop that she thought was dead. It just needed a hard reset, but the damned thing is overheating. I looked and found Toshiba had problems with their heat sink design.
I took it apart, and sure enough, the little fins on the heat sink, which use a copper heat pipe thing to carry it from the CPU to the front of the fan, were clogged up with dust.
The damn paste had dried up as well.

I don't know your circumstances, but I do know that the key to happiness is being able to see beauty in the smallest things, the most everyday things. Free your mind from yourself long enough to appreciate the beauty of Christmas lights against the backdrop of darkness, or a balmy day in December.
That is what got me through the darkness after losing my husband. For awhile I really didn't value life at all.
Think outside yourself, anyway. Try to help other people, even if incrementally. These distractions give the mind something else to do besides self-absorption.

Miley's will be fine -- the damn very fine heat fins on this thing just got completely coated over with dust causing no air flow. I've got it cleaned it up and it will be good to go. But the thermal paste is a must and I must have that before I can put it back together.

Well for sure you'll want to get rid of that first, or else you won't get any metal-to-metal conductive heat transfer.
Butter works but isn't ideal long-term; the article says it will liquify pretty much immediately. Also butter is for eating. Some other commenters have suggested less-silly substitutes. You can probably find something that'll work for a day or two until you can get real thermal paste. Getting the dust and gunk out should make a huge difference. If the fins on the heatsink are easy enough to get to, a couple drops of 99% isopropyl every once in a while helps too.

Then, the 'Battery Low' warning came on. Whut? I mean it was plugged in. Checked the 'AC Adapter', i.e., in-line power supply, and sure enough, dead soldier.
Apparently it had been on it's way out for a while, and was not not fully charging the battery. Now, it is simply a fact that RF receivers (and transmitters, for that matter) become less sensitive as their power supply droops.
That seems to have been the case here. Either the computers internal switching supply was sagging, or the wireless link is powered off the unregulated battery. Which ever, I kludged on a Dell 18V supply in place of the Toshiba 19V supply, and everything has been hunky dory.

Before JFK you're looking at guys like Eisenhower (way too high up the food chain for combat in WWII) and Truman (saw combat in France in WWI).
JFK was in combat (although his biography puffed up his bravery quite a bit, he really was on a torpedo boat that got sunk by the Japanese).
Ford was in numerous naval actions on board the USS Monterey.
Of those who didn't see combat:
Johnson was in the South Pacific, and volunteered for observer duties on a bombing mission on a Japanese base in New Guinea, though the plane he was on developed mechanical trouble and didn't complete the mission. Technically not combat, but neither was it the safest duty station in the world.
Nixon was also in the South Pacific as a logistics officer (at his own request... he had a safe billet in Iowa, but asked to be transferred to a combat zone).
Carter didn't graduate from Annapolis until '46, so didn't really have a chance to serve in WWII.
Reagan's eyesight disqualified him for overseas duty.
After Bush I, we're pretty much looking at Korea or Vietnam, not WWII.

I don't remember how it happened, but we managed to swap roomies so the annoying boys were together. And of course drove each other twice as crazy as either had been driving us before.
One of the problems was Other Roommate's girlfriend.
Anyway, Other Roommate ended up being one of the first folks I knew to move off campus, where he shacked up with his girlfriend, and My (Ex-)Roommate had the room to himself, so everybody was okay.
I just mention it because I'm pretty sure the couple in the last pic are Other Roommate and his girlfriend.

Well, I think Silly Putty is silicone filled with some sort of mineral filler, which should improve its heat conductivity. Note that actual heat sink compound contains metal oxides for that purpose.

From what I'm seeing, it is:
65% - Polydimethylsiloxane
17% - Silica, quartz crystalline
9% - Thixotrol ST
4% - Polydimethylsiloxane
1% - Decamethyl cyclopentasiloxane
1% - Glycerine
1% - Titanium Dioxide
There's nothing in there that strikes me as particularly thermoconductive, but for all I know, it doesn't take much so there might be some low fraction that does all the work. Anything I search for turns up loads of articles about combining it with graphene, which seems to be what all the cool kids are doing these days.

I've seen the recommendation of coffee filters. Basically you just want something lint free. I've done removal just carefully using paper towels squirted with the paste remover and cleaning solution.

I was "enlisted reserve" from the get-go... My only active duty was BT and the annual two-week ADT, so, I assume, I was officially done with the Army after BT...
I recall I had to write a letter and wait to get documentation of reserve service and discharge status... I'd changed addresses after I separated, and the papers I got mention that I couldn't be found at the time for formal separation processing, or some such...

That shit paid my way through school. All the people I still have as friends quit doing/selling them when it was time be adults. It's better than having debts, and all the idiots are dead or in prison, so I guess it sorts itself out.
But... there was a lot of risk for everyone on every step of those transactions, and a lot of people faced consequences.
What happens if it's all legal, and a lot of the consequences are obviated?
I don't know if it ends like 19th century China, but that's a distinct risk. There's always the possibility that our society rots from the inside and some other one takes us down.
I'm not saying that would happen, but it's still something to consider.

The campaign tells the story, but the short of it is that I have been looking for any kind of work for 4 months. I am 56, partially handicapped but able to work phones. It is like I don't even exist in the job market these days. I have been everywhere, and gotten nothing. Public assistance is not an option, as I ran the evaluation and food stamps are the only available assistance for me, despite having tiny assets and zero income.
Things get very bad here within a week. Anything you could do would be greatly appreciated. Be well.

That did make us more open to things outside our own very brief time span. I've found the younger generation mostly unable to process stuff even from the 90s, let alone earlier. And don't even mention black and white to them. I've actually seen "all time" lists which don't go back 25 years.
It didn't however, stop us from being a bunch of pernicious self-absorbed self-righteous shits.

We've all been saying for years, it's rural vs. urban America. The big cities skew elections all the way to the left.
In France, the socialist President sticks high fuel taxes on the population, knowing full well the worst burden will be on rural areas.
Now it looks like the battle has begun in earnest as the 'rurals' have blocked the roads into the cities, cutting off the food supply. That was my prediction for a quick victory in CW 2. Starve the fvckers.
We will see what Macron does. Well worth a trip to the store for additional pop-corn.
