I've heard that from a lot of people. I don't really get that. I've never had the issues others complain about (meats too gamey, etc.).

idk.

Every way I've cooked it (marinade, salt & pepper, etc.), it's come out well. I think the trick is to make sure you pull it off the grill right before it hits an internal temperature of 130, then put it under foil and let it rest.

If you overcook it, it gets a weird texture.

Posted by: Delaforce the Air Mechanic at December 04, 2018 09:35 AM (fhKm4)

Based on comments of the French who are living this (just my opinion from Twitter and elsewhere): they are enacting their response to Thatcher's: "running out of other people's money." Services they expect (firemen, schools, judges, etc.) have been severely cut (despite extremely high taxes, even on the lower middle class) to accommodate those who don't contribute (and their children.) At this time, it seems to be anger over the $ going to urban from the less populated areas, but maybe they will eventually figure out how mass migration caused that.

Yes. It's very interesting what inspires artists and why. For this, was it the violence of the act, or the idea of the lower-class working man at his job? Maybe the necessity but distastefulness of butchering meat for food? I find it interesting how vastly different people with vastly different philosophies and experiences can take the same theme, and by manipulating the elements of art in different ways, can make that image mean completely different things. Compare this Carracci to the Soutine I posted above, to any of Francis Bacon's contributions to the genre.

It seems he totally disregarded the purchase price of the cow.

I've done this, and all said and done, with a cow, I was at around $1000 for the cow and butchering.

Deer, $80 for the super combo license, $500 for a lease (which is STUPID cheap), then time, ammo and about $100 to $200 for processing, depending on requirements.

A conflict over blood sausage just got a politician kicked out of Germany's CDU party.

The interior ministry had a conference about Islam. They served food. Among more than a dozen appetizers was blood sausage, which is not halal. Some people lost their shit.

A Kurdish-German politician tweeted 'hey, if you're twisting your panties over blood sausage and ignoring that critics of Islamism are having to live under police protection then you're kind of tetched in the head".

And then a Turkish-German politician called him an Islamophobic rat and some other nasty things and the Turk got kicked out of the party.

Deer lease is where the cost is.

Private land deer lease runs anywhere between $600 a gun per season to $2,000 per gun. (Meaning ass in a blind seat)

Not much public land in Texas. And no guarantees on public or private land.

120 lb field dressed Texas whitetail or 1200 lb black angus steer.

Roughly the same cost after fees & processing.
Fees being hunting license & deer lease.
Posted by: rickb223 at December 04, 2018 09:38 AM (c3AZU)

...How is that possible?

I don't really hunt, but my buddy is an avid hunter who lucky for me has a family of wimps who dont like venison so I always end up with a full freezer of meet at the end of every season.

I think he said its like $100 per deer for butchering, then $35 for a hunting license which gives you 2 tags. (my buddy also does archery and whatnot for additional tags)

Probably the hunting lease (paying a land owner for permission to hunt on his property) that causes the price differential.

Private land deer lease runs anywhere between $600 a gun per season to $2,000 per gun. (Meaning ass in a blind seat)

141 Just reading an article about the Watts family murders (the CO guy who strangled his pregnant wife and smothered their two little girls).

Article said that Watts has lost 30 pounds since going to prison. It's only been a few months, and Watts was not overweight when he went in, so this is interesting.

There is a YouTube video of Watts from a few years back where he's giving some sort of oral presentation for a class he was taking. He is pudgy, soft, overweight, and kind of dorky looking.

In the year before the murders, Watts lost weight and started bulking up. If you look at the wife's FB photos of him, he's quite buff, with a very muscular upper body.

Could these murders have been the result of some 'roid rage? Watts was a mild-mannered, wimpy type (according to his wife and going by the YouTube video). Suddenly he's losing weight, bulking up, acting out rape fantasies with some random chick on Instagram, and asking his GF for butt sex and threesomes. Then he murders his family and goes to prison. Suddenly, he's 30 pounds lighter.

Seems like a classic steroid abuse case. Sudden increase in musculature, changes in personality, increased sex drive, rage, etc.

Yeah thats the way it is in NH.

In fact, a law in NH says landowners have no duty of care to hunters (or others engaged in 'outdoor recreational activity' like snowmobiling) as long as they don't charge a fee to hunt on the land.

If they were to charge a fee, they'd potentially be liable for any accidents caused negligence or failure to alert invitees or whatever else (which is how it is in any context anywhere outside 'outdoor recreational activities 'in NH).

So it's a big incentive to say "hey, hunt for free." and there's an informal culture of offering some of the butchered meat to the landowner as a thank you.

My lease is off the Brazos river, which has been flooded a LOT this year, so my $500, + time and effort has gone for naught.

I read someplace that in some areas bears will actually flock toward the sound of gunfire, because they have learned that sound means that somebody just shot a deer and there's fresh meat there now. Hunters have to be warned about this, as it's rather a dangerous situration: You bag a deer and go to collect the kill and a hungry bear is there first. Or sometimes more than one. Not sure how true that is in the real world.

I don't know if they know what to do with them after that. Probably were donated to a local food bank. But hunting on the first day was an experience for a 15 year old. Gun shots all around you, and it was cold and snowy. Dad always gave me a couple Hersey bars to keep me going. I was actually quite successful, and learned how to cut open a deer and gut it, before getting it to the car, the hardest part...

Posted by: TheQuietMan at December 04, 2018 10:34 AM (OLCnA)

248 I read someplace that in some areas bears will actually flock toward the sound of gunfire, because they have learned that sound means that somebody just shot a deer and there's fresh meat there now. Hunters have to be warned about this, as it's rather a dangerous situration: You bag a deer and go to collect the kill and a hungry bear is there first. Or sometimes more than one. Not sure how true that is in the real world.

That's a real thing. Happened this year, couple hunters were quartering out an elk and got attacked by a sow. I think the one guy, the guide, got killed. Hog-leg pistol was ten yards away on his pack.

I watched them butcher a lot of meat using the band saw and stuff, but never got into that part..

I wish I had paid more attention.. not sure why.. but it's nice to know where different cuts of meat come from.

And cuts of meat sure have changed over the years! When I was growing up, we used to be able to buy whole sirloin steaks... filet and bone included. You cannot find that cut any longer.

I've never seen Amelie.

I have seen, I think, three French films in my life - Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (which, IMO, gets tedious really fast), La Grande Illusion (because, well, Erich von Stroheim) and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (because I'm a sappy, hapless romantic).

OK, four - The Artist, though filmed in America, was helmed by a Frenchman.

I saw this on Twitchy last night. The left is all lathery about McCain wanting to control other people's speech. They've even cued the "hypocrite" loop, you know because conservatives talk about liberals *actually*, *legally* or *institutionally* shutting up other views.

And yet you hear the left complain about "whataboutism", and Behar can't take criticism that in talking about Bush Sr.'s death, she can't stay on the topic of Bush Sr.

The left's complaints about "whataboutism" is the same as all their complaints: paper thin.

Besides, I have a really developed argument against the "whataboutism" complaint.

Deer season was a scary time when my parents had their farm in Vermont. The horses had to be put out in the pastures with orange blankets because there were lots of drunk hunters who would shoot at anything that moved.

We used to find liquor bottles in the woods all over the property despite the signs and my mother actually came upon a hunter in a crude platform in a tree on their property when she was out for a walk with the dogs.

Local environment has a lot to do with it, too.

In the desert or in the winter, hardly any of my cuts get infected. I don't mess with dressings or band-aids until the work day is done, unless it won't stop bleeding.
