Chess Thread 11-17-2018

International Master Sopiko Guramishvili

As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Easier Problem - White To Play (794)

Obviously, with his overwhelming material superiority, this position should be an easy win for White. And it is. But what is the FASTEST win White can force?

Goal: White can force a mate in 2
Hint: Restrict Black to one legal move, then Kaboom.

20181117 - Problem 1.jpg
B1k2K2/1N1p4/p2Q4/8/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 1

Six Games, Six Draws

According to this article, Game #6 of the W. Ch. match between Fabiano Caruana and Magnus Carlsen was characterized by Fabi moving his knight around a lot. The score is tied 3-3.

Meanwhile, the online commenters were using computers to find forced mates that no human could possibly find OTB. I wonder how useful this really is.

I'm not going to do much commenting on this match other than to post links to other sources who actually know what they're talking about.

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (831)

Goal: Win by forcing an advantageous simplification
Hint: That pinned piece will be Black's downfall

Easier Problem - White To Play

20181117 - Problem 1.jpg
B1k2K2/1N1p4/p2Q4/8/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 1

This is the forced line, a win in 2:

1.Na5 Kd8
2.Qb8#

Which, much to my embarrassment, I didn't find. My app did. I thought the answer was

1.Qb6 d6
2.Qd8#

But I had overlooked 1...Kb8 2.Nd6+ Kxa8 3.Qb7#

Which is still a win, but one move longer than the fastest.

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20181117 - Problem 2.jpg
7k/7p/1Rp2np1/1p6/5q2/7P/6P1/Q6K w - - 0 1

1.Rb7 c5
2.Rf7 Qd4

Nothing can stop the killer move Rf7. If 1...Kg8 then 2.Qa8+ Ne8 3.Qxe8+ Qf8 and either 4.Qxf8+ Kxf8 with a won endgame for White.

3.Qxd4 cxd4
4.Rxf6 and wins

Or there's a forced mate, but it's a ways out: 4.Qe6+ Kh8 5.Qe5+ Kg8 6. Qc7 Qf1+ 7.Kh2 Qf6 8.Qxh7+ Kf8 9.Rb8+ Qd8 10.Rxd8#

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

Work afternoon at Schloss Hadrian:

Her Majesty: "Can you get the lawn mowed this afternoon?"

Me: "I'll have to do it by hand. Ground is too soft for the riding mower."

HM: "It's not good for you to use the push mower that much. Do what you can with the riding mower."

Me: "It's a major pain if it gets stuck. It's almost impossible to pull out."

HM: "Try it anyway."

So I broke down and bought Red Dead Redemption 2. Beyond beautiful graphics. I have the base level PS4 and I'm just running it into a standard hi def TV, no fancy equipment. Probably the best looking game I've ever owned.

There is the sinking suspicion that at the ripe old age of 29 I might not actually enjoy actually playing games quite as much as I used to. But the anticipating and buying have not lost any of their appeal.

What??????!!!!! Didn't we do this last year?

Posted by: bluebell at November 17, 2018 06:42 PM (U5tDi)

I know. My foot stuck on a stair (running shoes on stairs that have slip resistant treads is sometimes not a good thing.) and the rest of me kept going. Tore a ligament in the foot that was operated on last Christmas, but the knee took the brunt of this injury. Fibula doesn't seem to be where it should, it hurts and is flopping around. If I wear the boot for my ankle, it stabilizes the knee, so I can function, but that's not a long term solution.

Still: it's better than back pain. I will take my floppy knee over pack pain any day of the week.

So Jane, please, take care of yourself, especially if you have to cook for all those people!!

Geez, even the gang movies were more innocent back then.

A remake today would have the Bloods doing a drive-by at a Crips funeral, or vice versa.

And let's not even get into the Mexican drug cartels decapitating their rivals and hanging their bodies from highway overpasses.

325 Maybe we can reverse hack the IP Hash and hope he wasn't using a VPN to post so that we can get an idea of his location based on IP.
Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at November 17, 2018 07:16 PM (boNFp)

It's a one-way hash, so not likely.

Besides, it's probably in the server logs, but then - if you decide to take a break from posting, would you want Pixy to hand your IP over to the cops for a wellness check? He didn't post any threats to himself or anyone else, I think it would be crossing a big damn line to publish any info that he didn't post himself.

327 Completely up to you, grammie. I'd certainly understand if you decide not to.

Posted by: bluebell at November 17, 2018 07:20 PM (U5tDi)

328 There is the implicit risk of being sucked into Pixy's vortex of doom when you call a nood. I thought everyone here knew that and accepted it.

Ricardo Kill disappeared just like that. His health was poor too, I think.

I completely agree. It would be a horrible invasion of his privacy. He does have family that would tend to his well-being - his fiancee, his children from his first marriage, and his parents. Maybe even siblings. So I suspect that he would be taken care of in the event of any illness, etc.

334 Also, if me or Joe Mannix turn up missing, contact the other. We stay in touch, and if one of us vanishes, the other will already be on the trail.

352 A flippant observation:

Most social-media, late-nite comedian style progressives fear conservatism as a retread of a failed old philosophy from the 1950's that lead to the wars and economic dysfunction of the following decades.

Most well-read conservatives fear so-called progressivism as a retread of a failed old philosophy from the 1850's that lead to the genocide and economic collapse of the following century.

1.Rb7 c5
2.Qa8+

Black's best response 1. Rb7 Qe5! which maintains the mate in two threat from black and provides a supported blocking position on e8.
