Today Show Ratings Climb After Exit of MeAgain Kelly

A thaw after the departure of the Ice Queen.

Since Kelly’s exit from the third hour of "Today," viewership in the key demographic favored by advertisers in that time period is up around 10%, according to Nielsen. And in each of the last three weeks, overall audience for the flagship first two hours of the NBC A.M. mainstay has been larger than that for its main rival, ABC's "Good Morning America" -- a testament to some of the big breaking news stories that have recently gripped the nation, including a recent shooting tragedy in Pittsburgh.

In more happy news about people I don't like, Starbucks will be laying off around 5% of its corporate workforce.

And Bob Woodward is deriding CNN's lawsuit.

"In the news media there has been an emotional reaction to Trump," Woodward said, later adding, "Too many people for Trump or against Trump have become emotionally unhinged about this."

"The remedy [isn't a lawsuit]," he argued. "It's more serious reporting about what he's doing."

...

Woodward has cautioned reporters covering the president in recent months, once telling The Atlantic that the American people "see the smugness" of some in the press and that "following the facts" without injecting feelings and opinions into reporting is one way to help regain trust of the public.

No. Most of what they sell would more accurately be described as 'coffee-flavored milk drinks'. They over roast their beans to get some coffee flavor to punch through the milk.

Originally, they were taught roasting by the roastmasters at Peets. They have strayed far from that.

If you must, the 'blonde' roast is as close to drinkable as you'll find there.

90 Starbucks will be laying off around 5% of its corporate workforce.

I've long wondered how many large corporations would benefit from this, albeit I'd shoot for more than 5%. The only trouble is that they'd likely pick to good ones to throw out.

Probably the best way to handle it would be to protect the top 10% you think are good, and the bottom 10% you don't like, then have a lottery to choose who leaves.

BTW, I'm 90% serious. My own observation has been that we are not, in general, very good at picking whom to hire or to promote. And that view was formed long before the snowflakes started falling on the business world.

102 No. Most of what they sell would more accurately be described as 'coffee-flavored milk drinks'. They over roast their beans to get some coffee flavor to punch through the milk.

Yeah, they make coffee-flavored shakes, basically. But they also have straight coffee, and I have to admit the heavy roasting works well for iced coffee because of how it dilutes.

I don't think the ratings can be judged fairly until the finale for this season, and the average for next season after the novelty of a female doctor have worn off.

They're skipping the usual Christmas special this year which is kind of a big deal and no one's really sure why it's been cancelled.

The visual effects and general cinematographic quality are way up this year 'cause of budget and production staff, and I suspect that's what's really keeping viewers around short term in spite of the scripts and storytelling.

I wouldn't be surprised if Chris Chibnall got tossed as show runner after year two if things don't turn around for critics and old fans alike.

It's all gamesmanship now, politics and jockeying.

I was working for their Online Store division, the previous mgmt grew it to a one Billion (with a B) a year of income. Then he left and the jockeying began and it got handed to someone who knew nothing about e-commerce and didn't want to learn.

They augured that place into the ground. Outsourced all the staff who made it profitable.

It wouldn't shock me if they outsourced it all to Amazon by next year.

Though many enjoy blends where desired characteristics are assembled from more than one bean, I prefer single origin.

That is the irony of Starbucks, the customers think feel that they are connoisseurs of coffee, yet the extreme roasting that Starbucks performs on their beans converts what would be an enjoyable odyssey of discovery into a meaningless cup of dreck.

Maybe the genius of Starbucks is that the coffee is so awful and lacking of character that people pay large money to dope it up with additives that disguise that sorry excuse for coffee.

Sort of like taking Thunderbird wine and adding flavors to it since the disgusting brew left raw is only suitable for the undiscerning drugged up bum.

I'm confused about the quoting, here. If he didn't actually say "isn't a lawsuit" then what did he say? It must have been something close enough to assume he meant "isn't a lawsuit", I would guess ... but I can't figure out what it really was.

Look, I get liking it when bad things happen to people you don't like, but this is meaningless.

If someone can put out a competitive desktop OS and network infrastructure MS is dead on the desktop. Windows 10 is a mess. The October update that wiped out data on a lot of PCs was horrendous. Plus the system is unpredictable. I've seen two laptops, exactly the same, perform differently with no reason.

Plus the solution for most problems now is to "reset" the OS which wipes out every application.

My business partner had one client who wanted to do an Office 365 migration to an Office 365 migration. MS was, "You can't do that." He had to purchase third party software to make it happen.

270 If someone can put out a competitive desktop OS and network infrastructure MS is dead on the desktop.

Its well on its way.

I have been in IT since MS-DOS.

For a long while, Windows XP was the king of development until open source and Linux.

Then Apple made products that the Creatives had to have even if was for poser value only.

Then Microsoft made it possible to use their enterprise grade .NET frameworks available on iOS and Linux as well as Windows.

Then Amazon and other cloud services made it easy to try out different Operating Systems, then with Python, Node, .Net and Java one could make Serverless and Lambda functions.

Now there really is no need for Windows. In fact, I have seen one software shop after another when it came time to upgrade hardware, many went Linux and many more went Apple. Windows boxes are getting rarer and rarer to see in the Creative's world.

doubt if she knows what hunger feels like or to work two jobs or even WORK one job. She's been pampered and positioned since her birth and yet she thinks she comes from a family that were recently slaves.

I met a girl like this living in New Haven in the '70's
She was all like 'I know what it's(slavery) all about.' (she was attending Yale at the time) I stopped her and asked what plantation her parents were living on and when did they leave and when was she ever a slave. That shut her down but I got a lot of dirty looks from her pals (not all black).

So you see all this stuff going on was predictable 50 years ago as that's who's in charge at the top in so many places.

And it's not the boomers (which I say only includes those born after the war and before mid '50's) it was the generation after the boomers. The Police action plastic fantastics who's parents were born just before the war and so weren't in it and they also missed the Korean war. All they ever knew was peace. (there was the threat of nukes but no one really believed it would happen until Kennedy decided to be a dope).

They're considered boomers but they are a younger set and they're the ones doing all this crap because all they even knew is the propaganda put out by the commies in the Education schools in the '50's and then the crap in the Ivies in the '60's with the VN draft threatening.

The big appeal of Windows is minimum difficulty to use and customize, plus it comes with a computer. Linux takes a degree to use well and you gotta get it yourself. If someone is going to take Windows' place, they gotta offer Windows-type quality and ease of use. And it has to seamlessly run stuff Windows runs.

IT can be done, Both IE and Netscape were in that order blown out of the water by better, freer competitors. Its just a question of if anyone will step up.

I have a Mac Pro desktop which can hold up to four hard drives. Installing another HD is literally as easy as changing a light bulb. I have the Mac OS on one HD, and I bought the new one to install Linux on. Then I can boot from either one.

Where do I get a Linux DVD?

Mint is a superb distro for non-hardcore coders. Very easy interface, comes with lots of necessary functions/app/software installed, and good community forum access. http://tinyurl.com/y7tklpba

Also look at distrowatch.org for more resources and options.

Most Linux distros can be installed in parallel with a Windows OS. Easiest way is to add a second disk drive to a Windows system and run a bootable LINUX Install CD.

367 The October update that wiped out data on a lot of PCs was horrendous.

Any data loss is bad, but that was a pretty niche bug. MS estimated it affected 1/100 of 1% of users.

Basically you had to have told Windows to redirect one of the default folders (Downloads, My Documents, Pictures, etc) to a new location. So for example you have a Downloads folder in the usual place (C:\users\user\downloads) and you want to map that to D:\downloads. Now you have files in two places that are mapped as your Downloads folder. With the October update MS wiped out your files in the old mapped location.

It's a big oops, and it shouldn't have happened, but this is not something a lot of people do, or even know you CAN do.

378 Linux Mint is good. Google or bing Linux Mint. they will let you take a good size (32gb) removable drive or usb stick and turn it into a linux machine.

Some latency depending on what the media you put the Mint system on.

Works fine. Gets you accustomed to what using linux is like. I found very little to change from the download.

Very smooth and easy to install. Trouble is that if you have any proprietary windows or Apple software, you may have to do some studying up to make it work in a Linux environment.

Since I have XP still, I didn't feel the need to change. But now with a new laptop with win 10 I'm thinking seriously of a dual boot machine as I'm gonna need to start using this laptop soon so as to be ready when I finally can't use my XP installation because they wouldn't update it and the browsers won't provide updates for it anymore and I'm finding using the internet becoming trickier and trickier.

Mint was aimed at providing a windows experience on a linux operating system. Most stuff works the same. Some deeper system stuff is trickier so all your dos experience doesn't do you much good.

Am I the only one that thinks StarBucks tastes like burnt coffee

That is why pseudo-snobs love Starbucks. I roast coffee and
generally speaking, the less you roast, the more of the bean's character
is discovered in the cup.

More roasting means less character and less distinctive.

Though many enjoy blends where desired characteristics are assembled from more than one bean, I prefer single origin.

That is the irony of Starbucks, the customers think feel that
they are connoisseurs of coffee, yet the extreme roasting that
Starbucks performs on their beans converts what would be an enjoyable
odyssey of discovery into a meaningless cup of dreck.

Maybe the genius of Starbucks is that the coffee is so awful and
lacking of character that people pay large money to dope it up with
additives that disguise that sorry excuse for coffee.

Sort of like taking Thunderbird wine and adding flavors to it since
the disgusting brew left raw is only suitable for the undiscerning
drugged up bum.

Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at November 13, 2018 06:15 PM (lD3vL)

I roast coffee as well. SBUX house blend is half Sumatra, and half Papua New Guinea, roasted very dark. Coffee blends can be reverse engineered, just like software.

Neither bean tastes very well to me at any roast profile, although a lot of people like the earthy taste of the Sumatra. The PNG roasted medium has a winey taste that is sharp and acidic, ok for a change up but not as an every day blend.

Together, roasted very dark, they taste like chit. But there are also advantages: SBUX can get more shots out of a pound, their espresso blend carries well when mixed with hot milk, and that blend can stay on the shelf forever without going bad. Mainly because it is already bad and is difficult to tell a fresh roast SBUX espresso blend from an old and stale version of the same blend.

Very much this.

I have two big problems with Linux.

1. Any time I want to do a non-standard thing, I try the obvious thing, Linux breaks, and it takes me a week of research to find the super-cryptic CLI command to fix it. I hate that.

2. Linux is a hodge-podge of design philosophies written by a ton of enginerds who have no interest, experience, or talent at design.

There's a reason Apple products "just work" for Apple people. That reason is Apple has a unified design philosophy and anyone who has used Apple for a while will feel like any unknown piece of software is INTUITIVE. It's not really intuitive, it's simply conformant to Apple design philosophy. The end result is Apple people can try a few things that have worked for similar problems in the past and the solution will probably be in those places they will think to look.

Linux is nothing like this.

Linux-heads can spit out "closed source" and "walled garden" and "Apple geeks are told how to think" arguments all they want, but at the end of the day, having an intuition for how to solve problems in a new piece of software is both comforting and extremely productive. CLI commands with archaic command flags and extremely forgettable executable names simply do not compare.

What do they do between seasons? Usually I alternate between Central American beans and African with a Sumatra/Java to have a change.

I'm trying to find the ideal cold brew coffee. Though I am a total fan of City/City+ roasts particularly with the florals and citrus beans, it seems that cold brew kills all of the high notes and only leaves the heavier components.

My best success was a high elevation Kenyan mixed with a highly rated Rubusto (the latter has a much higher caffeine component to it, and the caffeine is what makes that bean so bitter but the blend and the cold brew seems to mellow that out)

414 37 And, the ratings for the chick Dr. Who are dropping like a rock.
People are criticizing it for being too PC.

Saw a kbdabear tweet on it today.

Doctor Who is an Englishman, period.

I'm not a big fan, just remember it from long ago 30+ years). Out of curiosity I watched an episode at least five years ago and it was rotten with PC and heavy handed anti-English propaganda (e.g. at some boarding school in 1912 or so, the kids were being instructed in the use of a Vickers gun so they could kill brown people. Not Germans. Brown people.)

It's Doctor Whoever from here on out. Within a decade the Doctor will be a muslim who uses the Tardis to travel through time to rape millions of white English children. The villain will try to stop him.

It was short. I have no idea, I've had longer interviews that go no where so we'll see.

416 When you run the Linux setup, it should prompt you when it comes to boot setup. Once done, every time you start the computer, there should be a dialogue that asks which OS you want to start, one of them being the default OS that will come up after x number of seconds.

Ummm. No.
The Greek diner at the end of the street has a better cup of coffee than Starbucks. Costs $ .75 and you get free refills.Just because someone has roasted coffee beans until they are the consistency of charcoal and then charges you $7.50 a cup does NOT make the coffee "better".You want good coffee? Get a percolator. Buy a good Colombian ground coffee. Perk it up yourself ("cold brew" wtf is that?) then enjoy.
Starbucks? It's coffee for stupid people.
