Napoleon was exiled to Elba as a treaty provision after having lost the war to pretty much every other country in Europe. A lot of French still revered him, but many were glad to see him go. He had, after all, declared himself Emperor, which was a complete repudiation of the ideas of the Revolution. The Bourbon dynasty, which was installed to replace him, of course enforced the official state line that he was a monster. So back to the press: Here are the Paris press' headlines, from the moment they hear that Napoleon has violated his treaty terms and escaped from Elba, to when he lands on French soil, to when he begins gathering his old loyalists (grognards), to when he is within a few days' march of Paris, to when he actually arrives.Napoleon's march on Paris as reported via newspaper headlines (1831) As published in The Museum of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art, Volume XVIII The French newspapers which, in 1815, were subject to the censor, announced the departure of Bonaparte from Elba, his progress through France, and his entry into Paris in the following ingenious manner: -- 9th March, the Anthropophagus [literally "Man-eater"] has quitted his den -- 10th, the Corsican Ogre has landed at Cape Juan -- 11th, the Tiger has arrived at Gap -- 12th, the Monster slept at Grenoble -- 13th, the Tyrant has passed through Lyons -- 14th, the Usurper is directing his steps towards Dijon, but the brave and loyal Burgundians have risen en masse and surrounded him on all sides -- 18th, Bonaparte is only sixty leagues from the capital; he has been fortunate enough to escape the hands of his pursuers -- 19th, Bonaparte is advancing with rapid steps, but he will never enter Paris -- 20th, Napoleon will, tomorrow, be under our ramparts — 21st, the Emperor is at Fontainbleau -- 22nd, His Imperial and Royal Majesty, yesterday evening, arrived at the Tuileries, amidst the joyful acclamations of his devoted and faithful subjects.I don't know if this is the same thing, really, but here's some changing-of-a-tune from a CNN "analyst:"

This is why we have Fen's Law:
The Left doesn't really believe in the things they lecture the rest of us about If you thought their position on Russian "collusion" had the silver lining that they had boxed themselves in re election fraud in general, you haven't been paying attention. They aren't vulnerable to the Hypocrisy Card because they never believed election fraud was bad to begin with. Only when their enemies do it. We have to stop assuming the Left operates under the same value system we do. We expect them to be in morally consistent and are continually shocked off balance when they are not. We would be ashamed and embarrassed at such intellectual dishonesty. But for them it doesn't even register. Stop expecting terrorists to abide by the laws of war. Something became clear to me the other day that is a prime obstacle in fighting back the Left:
-The Left's definition of itself (good, virtuous, holy, loving) is the premise we are given to begin with, and-- -The Left's definition of Us (haters, bigots, greedy, Hitler) is the starting line are given to begin with. We start in a hole. Our arguments are dispensed with (since we are monsters), and rejection of the Left is itself rejected (since they are such bright angels). This premise originates in simple-minded emotionalism and the rationales provided by Academia, but the enforcer of that dogma is the media. Every small victory we have will be driven from memory and the starting point will again be pushed back to the original baseline by a media that renews the Narrative perpetually. Also when the hell do they count the 30,000 plus military ballots coming in? I'm so f****** livid about this Posted by: Getcha Pull at November 12, 2018 08:14 PM (aR6C/) 94

One point that struck home for the female (who was already hostile to abortion) was that PP started as a way to kill blacks. After I proved this to her, she was pretty upset, and then I told her to pay attention to where they concentrate their offices in our city - a few locations in the burbs, and then a ton in the hood. Dems also won 233 in 2006. Which is right where they will end up in 218. So enough of this "Nancy has the teeniest tiniest majority post WW2 and won't pass anything". Wait, what happened after 2006? Anything? Did that majority endure? Someone refresh my memory because I seem to recall some epic red waves between then and now. Serious question: Does anyone not understand that GOPe purposefully threw the House majority away? 40 retirements, Paul Ryan openly dick-tripping and thwarting easy layups like defunding Planned Parenthood. So even with the SITTING GOP SPEAKER ACTIVELY WORKING FOR THEM the Dem result was...okay. Not a wave, not great, but okay. Now the traitors have been flushed out. Are we going to do Napoleon III tomorrow? Posted by: Bandersnatch at November 12, 2018 07:53 PM (fuK7c) Perhaps Klemens von Metternich? Far more appealing in paint and truly the man who made both Emperor Napoleon III and Bismarck possible in his attempt to keep Europe from changing and leaving the Austrian Empire behind in the dust. There is a nice allegorical painting of Napoleon sitting with Otto von Bismarck after the battle of Sedan, with the captured head of state sitting slumped disconsolate in his red trousers and Republican blue greatcoat and Bismarck in his pickelhaube and leaning on his saber like a concerned grey haired uncle. @24 Napoleon is much beloved in France. Still.
-------------------- Not only was he a great military strategist (to the point that he effectively rewrote the book on how to conduct war in his era), but he also put a stop to the excesses of the Revolution. Admittedly, he did so by running home after abandoning his army in Egypt, and confronting the French government before news got back about the state of the army he'd left behind. But that doesn't change the fact that most Frenchmen probably breathed a sigh of relief when comparing the state of things before Napoleon took over, and after. We start in a hole. Our arguments are dispensed with (since we are monsters), and rejection of the Left is itself rejected (since they are such bright angels). This premise originates in simple-minded emotionalism and the rationales provided by Academia, but the enforcer of that dogma is the media. Denial of objective reality removes the need for consistency and allows their starting premise to work forever and always. The solution to this is to say NO and make it stick. Menthol only survived because of the intervention of (I kid you not) the Congressional Black Caucus members. They're now trying to do this with vape juice. @244 I've always viewed Napoleon's mistake as being the same as Hitler's: launching a spring offensive against Russia while fighting a rearguard action in the West (in his case Spain, instead of Britain).
----------------- What was going on in Spain didn't really make any difference. Napoleon essentially lost his entire army in Russia. And without the army, he had no solid core of veterans to build around the following year. Unlike the Germans in World War 2, the countries that Napoleon had defeated during his campaigns still existed, many of them with their original rulers. They even sent small contingents of troops to fight against Russia (though those units weren't with the main army heading to Moscow, iirc). So when Napoleon lost his army in Russia, Austria and Prussia increased the sizes of their existing armies, and announced that they were marching on Paris the following year. The biggest battle of the Napoleonic Era was the Battle of Nations which had troops from pretty much every country that fought in Europe during that time period (including troops from Sweden, under their new king, who was one of Napoleon's old generals, now fighting against Napoleon). It took place the year after the disaster in Russia. The British contribution to that battle consisted of a single rocket battery. What's the gain, though? --------- First of all, there is no such thing as land war anymore. But, that aside, as Palp would tell you, one of the Russians strengths is that they have no regard for casualties. In the first ten days of Barbarosa, they lost 2,000,000 men. Throughout the war, they lost ~25,000,000. After that, Stalin started in on his own people. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at November 12, 2018 08:46 PM (CDGwz) 286

I mean, we can just go back to the way it was before humans lived in California -- years of drought led to multi-year long forest fires that burned everything down except the strongest trees, then everything was good for a few years or decades until it repeated itself. On a similar topic, they need to fucking improve their water infrastructure, too. ...But the environmentalists won't let them. ----------------- Reminds me... Not Mongolian, but rock related... Instapundit had a link today to an article about a guy living in Los Angeles who made up a band (basically himself, and some hired performers), and then made up the *entire* (fake) institutional support that a successful band would have, such as a booking agent, recording studio, etc... And then using all of that, he booked an entire European tour. Only problem was, since the "band" didn't actually have any fans, the only people who showed up to watch them perform at the locations they've visited so far were the invited guests from the warm-up band. The locales that booked him for his performances are understandably just a bit upset with him. Posted by: junior at November 12, 2018 09:12 PM (S1hih) 394

Posted by: rickl at November 12, 2018 09:09 PM (sdi6R) ++++++++++++ Is he getting away with that? Several years of a strapped forest service, large-scale failures at mitigation and many laws passed that hamper mitigation, and the abject lack of planning for and response to drought surely has *nothing* to do with this. In CO, we were in a drought for the better part of a decade. Each year we saw new things being done about it - mitigation, controlled burns (usually, one big one went completely out of control, but they were usually successful), severe non-agricultural outdoor water use restrictions, ramping up on wildland firefighting capability, etc. It wasn't a picnic by any means and we had some brutal fires anyway but we didn't go around blaming the global warming boogeyman. The press and professors did, but the state forest service got down to business and the rural counties took some major actions on mitigation and clearing the decks to make it easier. CA is a couple of years into its drought and they can't blame Trump for that. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at November 12, 2018 09:15 PM (hYcqw) 409

And we're sure that wasn't Neil Young? Posted by: BackwardsBoy at November 12, 2018 09:16 PM (HaL55) 415

Haven't read it yet, but it sounds hilarious. Gotta be expensive for him, though-- I assume that the performer gets a cut of the ticket sales? I guess it's almost like what vanity publishing used to be-- you'd order X copies of a book from a publisher, then you own them and it's up to you to sell them. Only as a lark.
