John Singer Sargent

Hmmm...I'm not a fan of Sargent's "softer" work (watercolors?). I like his portraits better. But this is an interesting scene, and his skill is undeniable.

This one really embiggens. I love seeing the brush strokes.

This violates the rule of thirds in having our main subject smack dab in the middle and all the rest of the action on the left, but it works. All of their attention is focused left, yet the huge negative space on the right draws you back. I like the tension.

I don't yet have a theory for the symbolism of a geyser coming out of the guy's head.

60 Sargent is one of those guys that -- I dunno, this is going to say more about me than about Sargent -- that I took too long to get a taste for because I encountered him too late in life.

It's like there's a name and you've heard the name but you don't know what to associate it with and then finally the thing clicks and oh that's Sargent. And then your brain, well, my brain, says fuck that guy how could I have gone all these years without knowing him. There must be something wrong with him because otherwise I have to feel shame at having been ignorant.

So then there is some seething.

I don't see relaxed. So much opportunity to speculate, but I gotta think she doesn't trust him as far as she could throw him.

Dripping symbolism COULD be made of the hand, holding him at arms length, the paint palette on her lap (blocking access), and the huge white dropcloth like smock, covering her, preventing any "information" about her actual shape...

FWIW, the full title of this painting is The Fountain, Villa Torlonia, Frascati, Italy and was painted in 1907.

The villa itself was bombed to near-ruins during WWII and the gardens are now a public park.

90 This is a thoroughly pleasant painting. I think it was done in oils but has a watercolor feel about it. Appropriate for the subject. I like the way the stone work contrasts with the greenery and the water, the way the folds in the smock and other clothing show the softness of summer weight cloth, even the water matching the whites of the clothing. Sargent makes the viewer hear the fountain and feel the warmth of summer sunlight.

The composition is very close to the 'thirds' considered to be best but not so much that it feels calculated. It would be interesting to see this in person

She is focused and loose and clearly enjoying herself. The tenseness is from being controlled, not stressed.

Her legs are supporting her easily and not clenched or overly bracing her on the stool, her arms are extended and loose, and not retracted or curled. The extra brushes are held loosely between her left fingers and the hand is not clenched ot control them. Clenching or curling the arms would force her to hunch forward, and force her head to bend forward or tip back to keep her face forward, in either case causing her to hunch her shoulders.

Well, as someone who has lived in blue hellholes her entire life, I think there is more involved. If you're a person with strong family ties, the prospect of moving to a red state where everyone is a stranger is not appealing. Also, there just aren't that many jobs in Wyoming. And what about conservative blue staters who made the move only to find out that their new state has become a lib hellhole? I feel for conservatives who moved from Cali to Colorado or from Mass. to Virginia.

You'd probably be even more impressed with Sargent's skill if you saw the original. Stand close to the picture and the passages of bravura brushwork appear as abstract, but stand farther back and they coalesce into realism.

We put about 2/3 in the freezer and I'm eating the remainder for breakfast each day. Her Majesty had some and it caused a flare-up of her diverticulitis, so I have to polish it all off.

I actually agree with you. But more than once I've heard the bitching and when asked why they don't consider moving, it isn't family, or career, or fighting the good fight that's brought up first. Those are perfectly good reasons to endure the evils of living in the blue. It's the trivial things I get annoyed over, like bagels, the theater district (that they never visit), a decent cup of coffee etc. It's a minority of folks that do this, but there's enough that it's irritating.

Hey, I'm another blue state transplant that made the move to red. And to be fair, the bagel argument is correct, bagels in CenTX basically suck. But there's more to life than boiled and baked bread products.

In a matter of a few years, I will very likely be out of the big city (St. Louis), maybe the state. Missouri has its charms. Weather isn't one of them (nearly half a foot of Globall Warmening outside as we speak).

I think I'll head south. The reasons for not leaving now are real, and not needing to be cataloged. What I don't and wouldn't find useful at all, would be griping about having to be here now, because I'm a firm believer in, we seek the changes we do, and we don't seek the changes we don't, because of what's inside us, not what's out there in the rest of the world.

Also known as opium. (My dad crushed a disk in the '80s and waited a while to get it looked at because he was dad and stubborn. They operated on it after the pain got so bad that he couldn't walk straight, but it was '80s-level medical technology. He was in constant pain thereafter, worsening progressively over time. To be fair, he SHOULD be an insufferable little shite, given what he had to do to get there. And given the fact that it's one of the hardest jobs he'll ever have, whether he stays in the Army (and gets promoted) or not.

Among other things, muscle cells begin to burst and release just a little bit of myoglobin and other proteins into the intercellular matrix, but you haven't quite got warm enough for long enough to being the chain of Maillard reactions.

Raw muscle fiber is just Raw muscle fiber. Still delicious, still has its place in the world (acid-cured carpaccio, tartare, etc.), but I can get how it's not everyone's thing.

Perfectly rare meat is a joy to the heart and a thing of beauty.

Sargent was THE painter of the upper classses during the gilded age, so yep. He purposely stopped doing portraits of rich people later in life because he had enough eff you money by then. But he captured the soul of his subjects so well, and his technique is flawless. Easy to see why he was in such high demand.

The left claims he was gay because he never married. They claim every artist is gay until proven otherwise nowadays, so do with that what you will.

Serving raw hamburger meat or steak along with rye bread and onions used to be a staple at Milwaukee area wedding receptions when I was a kid. Of course, Wisconsin has many people of German descent. I was sickened by the sight of it when I was a kid, but about 12 years ago I went to a Christmas party and tried it for the first time - topped with plenty of freshly ground pepper and a little salt - and thought it was delicious. But I haven't seen it or had it since then. I'm sure health considerations and fear of lawsuits is why I haven't.

Yep. It's funny when I think that many of the adults I knew who happily wolfed down raw chopped beef with onions on rye bread at weddings when I was a kid ordered steaks well done in restaurants. It's like they wanted their beef either raw or cooked to a crisp.
Sadly, I wrecked a good piece of steak last week by over cooking it. No pink at all inside. I ate it but I was unhappy. It's exactly the way my dad would have liked it, but a well done steak is one step above dog food in my book.

368 I can't find the original post, but whomever is considering back surgery, try everything else before you take such a drastic step. I have worked for orthopedic surgeons, and you can come out worse off.

Try Inversion tables, acupuncture, that new Dr. Ho's back belt, exercises...everything. There's also a new contraption that loosens up the back and the compressed discs. Look into the new Laser surgery they are doing for backs.

Until you exhaust all those possibilities, avoid the surgery. If you insist on going through with it, investigate and find the absolute best orthopedic surgeon you can.

I can't emphasize these points enough.

Anyway, I really love the painting. I don't see the guy sitting, I see him leaning back on his arms. If he was asleep, I don't think he could hold that pose. The position of his left fingers add to my belief he is not asleep.

I think he is doing that wonderful thing where you close your eyes as you tilt your head back and put it toward the warm sunshine...on a day with perfect temps.

Or, he's resting his eyes as she paints. Or, she has told him she doesn't want him to see the painting until it is finished so keep his eyes closed.

It is possible she is not painting him at all. She may be painting a scene we can not see, and he has just accompanied her. Her face and eyes seem to indicate that, bcz it is not tilted down toward him at all. She is looking over and past him. I am partial to this interpretation.

I wish I could step into that painting.

371 The original hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago, and it is one of my favorite paintings there. It's a small work, maybe 16x12 inches (if I remember correctly), and clearly was painted very quickly. The subjects were friends of Sargent's, and his affection for them shows.
My take on Sargent's work is the opposite of CBD's: I love his smaller work, in particular the watercolors, of which he was the absolute master - better, even, than Homer or Turner (IMHO) - while his society portraits leave me cold. YMMV, and all that.
