Gun Thread: Well I Suppose That's One Way to Do It - [Weasel]

Interesting Variation on Classic IWB Carry

Anyone else using the IWB Lower Back Muzzle Peekaboo style for concealed carry?

A few weeks ago we talked about buying a first gun, and today I'd like to discuss carry permits and carrying a weapon.

I firmly believe that the single best carry gun in the universe is the one you actually have with you when you need it. Regardless of caliber, sights, custom trigger and all the rest, the gun you left at home in your sock drawer isn't going to do you a whole lot of good in an emergency. This is why some gun owners take the extra step to obtain a concealed weapon permit, and then carry a concealed weapon.

Before we begin the usual banter and fun commentary, a serious note:
Not everyone wants to carry a gun, and if you aren't comfortable doing so, then you probably shouldn't consider it further. I'd feel better if you did, but it's a big responsibility, and not something ever to be taken casually. Carrying a firearm is a very serious business and needs to be treated as such. If the unthinkable occurs and God forbid you use a weapon to defend yourself or others, in the time it takes to pull the trigger you will have changed your life, and presumably the target's life, forever.

Think about that.

As I write this, another horrific mass shooting has just been committed, this time at a nightclub in Thousand Oaks, California. What drove the person to commit such a heinous act will probably never be known. However, I think it's safe to say we do know a couple of important facts; we will never be able to un-invent (or confiscate) all of the guns now in existence, and just one competent and armed person in a crowd of hundreds would have at least had a chance to stop the massacre.

Think about that, too.

*******

The Permit
I live in Virginia, and like many states today, at one time it was nearly impossible to get a concealed carry permit here. Things have changed, and today as long as you pass a background check and can demonstrate competency with a firearm, you should be approved for a permit. For me the process was straightforward; submit an application and fingerprints, show that I'd attended a brief but practical course on the topic, and pay a fee to the city where I live. A few weeks later, the permit came in the mail. There are going to be some variables to the process based on where you live but Virginia is likely representative of other "shall issue" states, where one must only meet the criteria specified in the law and is not required to demonstrate a subjective 'need' to be considered for approval.

Do you have a permit? For those living in "may issue" states, what was the 'need' you specified and how were you required to support the claim?

What to Carry
You've gone through the process of obtaining a permit to carry a concealed weapon, and your next decision is likely what concealed weapon to carry.

As mentioned above, any gun is better than no gun. I would much rather be armed with some puny girly-man caliber handgun than relying on throwing bags of Fritos and Slim Jims at the bad guy holding up the gas station late at night. So which handgun is my carry gun, you ask? Well using my super-genius reasoning, they're all candidates, only varying by degrees of suitability. My usual carry gun is a Kimber Compact Custom in 45 ACP with a 4 inch barrel.

kimber scaled.jpg
Kimber Compact Custom

Another handgun that I carry is a revolver, the S&W Model 686 in .357 Magnum with a 2 1/2 inch barrel. I carry this gun mostly at the farm with the first two or three cylinders loaded with snake shot.

sw686 scaled.jpg
S&W Model 686

The common element for both guns is absolute reliability and a short barrel, and I practice with them enough to hit the center of a target at a reasonable distance.

Which gun do you carry and why? Is bigger always better, or is comfort and concealability a greater consideration for you?

How to Carry It
Now you've gone through the process of obtaining a permit to carry a concealed weapon and found the ideal weapon to carry - so what are your options for carrying it around?

Most people like to use holsters, but other options do exist. Like a handbag or purse for girls, and the manbag or satchel (*snicker*) for boys. There's even a rig employing the underbewb or frontal overhang region as a concealment area for the ladies (and some of the gentlemen). All sorts of contraptions exist to conceal a firearm, but in my opinion, the farther you get away from a simple and straightforward sidearm holster, the less useable the firearm becomes. Unless of course you're a super-badass quick drawing mo-fo with cat-like reflexes, of which the internet breeds many.
And don't forget that states have very specific definitions for weapons in vehicles and what is considered 'concealment' - know the laws wherever and however you travel.

I prefer Outside Waist Band (OWB) holsters over Inside Waist Band (IWB). They seem to be more comfortable to me, but either style will work. The best holster for you is the one that is comfortable for you, and isn't such a miserable experience you're tempted to leave the whole mess at home to begin with. Ask around and don't be surprised if you have to try a few over time to get one that feels right.

I like these holsters - do you have a favorite brand or style? What, if any, special clothing choices have you made to make concealing a weapon more practical?

Reloading Bench
This week, I suppose 'Ammo Counter' is a more appropriate title for this section. I use commercial handgun ammunition with heavy hollow point bullets in my carry guns without exception. While I have loaded thousands and thousands of handgun and rifle cartridges and never had a failure to fire solely related to ammunition that I can recall, the reason has to do more with making a compelling defense if I ever end up in court after defending myself with a firearm. Final Thoughts
Before you accept the responsibility of carrying a weapon, please do a few things:
- Get licensed: Having one may just save you a lot of legal grief when Officer Friendly realizes you have a gun in the car during a traffic stop.
- Get training: Drawing and firing from a holster is remarkably different than standing at a range bench and shooting. Very remarkably different.
- Get Educated: Buying a gun and a holster isn't the end of the process, it's the beginning. Know your rights and your responsibilities.

French St. Etienne Model 1873 Revolver

Lurker with an Old Frenchy Gun writes:

This is a French St. Etienne Model 1873 revolver, caliber 11mm. It was manufactured in 1882. The holster is original with the gun and even has 2 original cartridges in it. The story behind it is that my great uncle "removed" it from a Nazi soldier in WW2 whom he killed in hand-to-hand combat. The gun was already quite outdated for WW2 usage, and was certainly not something a German would have carried, so the German had likely taken it from a French gendarme or possibly a resistance fighter. Anyway, I've never fired it and have no intention to, but it's a very solidly made revolver. Virtually every part has the serial number stamped in it. The lockup is as tight as any modern production revolver. I'm proud of my great uncle's service and this gun will be passed on to my son someday.

20 I usually carry my P229 Legion simply because I am most comfortable with that weapon. But I also have over a thousand rounds through my P365, and it's tempting to take that because of the size. Depending on where I'm headed it's Kydex IWB or OWB.

21 Haven't been to the range for a bit because of my surgery. That said, Mrs. Old Blue came in with a flyer from Sportsman's Warehouse and one of the guns on sale was a Springfield Armory mil-spec 1911-A1 for $550.00. I asked the Horde what they thought and they said that seemed to be a pretty sweet deal. Mrs. Old Blue said that she would get it for me for an early Christmas present.

I am happy to announce that I am now the proud owner of a brandy new 1911 in .45 acp. Being as how I haven't owned a pistol in years, and the last time I fired a 1911 was in boot camp 48 years ago, my next step is to find a good qualified firearms instructor to teach me the finer points of ownership.
I'm not sure that I would carry it, it seems kind of large and the way I dress, I don't know where I could even conceal it.

24 Hi Weasel and thanks for another gun thread.
I normally carry a Smith M and P compact in 9mm or a Ruger 101 in 357 loaded with 38 special Plus P ammo. I don't use IWB holsters since I take up all the available space. I prefer pocket carry in a pocket holster. Not as convenient as at the waist but easier to conceal.

Mrs. JTB and I were qualified NRA safety instructors at one time and that took care of the 'training' requirement Virginia demands.

32 The 11mm st Etienne pistol cartridge was one of the cartridges reviewed in advance of beginning trials for the .45 ACP. It was considered "good, but will not pierce the skulls of horses" which was an important consideration.

I own two of them. One was rechambered to .45 ACP and I reload BP cartridges for, and the other is good but has a broken main spring.

Lovely pistol. Much nicer than the pinfire models used previously, and much more useful than the 9mm rimmed cartridges that were considered typical for European armies at the time.

34 I agree that carrying a gun is not to be taken lightly. It may be a right to keep and bear arms, but it's also a responsibility.

I just wish more people were willing and able to take that responsibility.

For me, it's part of being a man. Of being capable of protecting myself, my family, my friends. A man who can't or won't do that is diminished in my eyes.

It's also made me a better person, ironically. I avoid trouble now, don't get into arguments and temper my driving (somewhat), I avoid trouble areas because if things do escalate, I might have to kill someone. And I don't take that lightly.

Finally for me it's about having options. I've had a gun put in my face and felt that cold feeling down your guts when you realize you are at the other person's mercy, utterly. Because they had a gun and I didn't. I vowed never to be an unarmed victim again.

Hence the discipline. And carrying a gun all the time is a discipline, it's not easy. Not comfortable, often.

66 More fun is the gun part!

My criteria isn't so much size and weight, I carry OWB and living in the Seattle area, I can wear a jacket most of the year. Also I'm a large mammal so that....padding and my build helps with most concealment options.

But for me the gun has to be accurate and reliable. Reliability being the drop-dead requirement. (Which is why my PPQ is not in my carry rotation)

The most reliable guns I've found have been Springfield Armory's XD series. The XD9 and XD45, the former I've put north of 20k rounds through it. The gun digests everything and is very accurate if I focus. It's a little top-heavy, like a SIG, but it's my fav.

Secondarily, we have the Glocks. The Glock 19, 21 most of all. The Glock 19 I call The Great Compromise. It may not be the best in every specific area but it's very good in every area. It's light, accurate and with factory 15 round mags, it's perfectly reliable. I will add one cavet that every once in a while, larger capacity magazines (the 17, 22 and 33 round variety) have hiccuped. I don't recommend them for combat but they're great for the range.

I have other pistols I'll carry, especially in summer. A Smith and Wesson 36 hammerless and the Kel Tec FP9. Sometimes I'll carry a Makarov in my jacket liner pocket, Israel carry-style.

But tops for me are the XD and Glocks.

I carry crossdraw (left hip, 10 degree forward cant) OWB. The weapon is my 1911A1.
Never have had an issue with printing--yet--and I practice drawing the weapon regularly. The weapon is carried cocked and locked, as designed.
Only other thing is my shirt or coat has snaps rather than buttons or zipper.
No hangups when you pull quickly.

My family has long generations, and my grandpa chased Pancho Villa around Mexico with Pershing before shipping off to France as a Marine to fight the Hun. He was highly decorated, but we didn't know that until he died in 1978, because he never spoke of it. He named his youngest daughter Leila after a tiny little French lady he met over there (he was married, but it was war, you know) as far as we can tell by the letters we unearthed. And now you can find muster rolls from that time period on Ancestry by way of one of their services. So now we know that when he wasn't busy fighting someone, he was drinking on guard duty and getting busted down to bread and water.

Different times, but the same soldiers. God bless 'em all, living and dead.

72 I have a permit for "Sportsmen" activities which, in NY State basically allows you to carry during or on way to any of your customary outdoor activities, and while engaging in hiking, fishing, etc EXCEPT for anyplace on State wild land in which there are myriad separate regulations, including no guns in campgrounds, during hunting season other than in a legal hunting caliber etc.

This is the best I could get in our suburban blue county.

But my real point is that the biggest reason I'm not looking to carry regularly is that I'm genuinely concerned about the not-so-low probability of a traffic stop by LE while carrying. I've seen a good number of "how to" be stopped by LE when carrying, including by the always sensible and very informed Massad Ayoob.

But I've also seen the video of that panicky, POS Minnesota LE guy in the Castillo shooting just freaking out and giving contradictory, rapid-fire instructions and then shooting the guy.

95 When I lived in MA it was a may issue state. Basically town by town. If the sheriff didn't like guns you didn't get a permit. I lived in a town that was OK with guns, so I got one.

Now I've been in CT for mumble years and I had kept not finding the $200 for various filing fees to get a pistol permit. That's after the whatever the NRA course costs and includes filing fees to the state and the town and fingerprinting and passport photos and shipping and handling.

I made it a priority in late August. I got everything in. Now I'm two months in to the possibly four month process of waiting to find out if I'm approved for a temporary permit.

The weird thing about CT is I can't even buy long gun ammo without the pistol permit. There's some alternative pathway for a weird rifle-only license but it's as much a pain in the ass as the pistol permit so why not?

Anyway, I hope to know by Christmas how it turns out.

In addition to the excellent thread article, I would like to add that the ettes and the morons too, should look at the Well Armed Woman.com for all firearm related shopping and excellent articles on the subject.
Carrie Lightfoot, the owner, was elected to the BOD of the NRA this past spring. She has grown the WAW from a tiny online shop with a few holsters for women to an influential organization that now has shooting chapters for women across the country.

Also strongly recommend the Ukoala bag for both men and women. The carry version has either a zipper or magnetic closure compartment that has Velcro for attaching a holster. You can order a custom Kydex or they come with a nylon soft holster. Many men carry these to ride motorcycles, bicycles, and hunt and I love mine as a female. No more fear of leaving the shopping cart with my purse in it, no extra conceal holsters, etc.

98 A belt holster, whether OWB or IWB, is part of a system, the other primary component of which is the belt.

Don't skimp on the belt.

Also consider how to carry additional magazines, or ammo if using a revolver. Particularly with semis, a mag change is the fastest way away from a malfunction.

99 There's no good reason why my grandpa survived France in WWI, after being gassed and fighting at Alsace Lorraine, but I'm rather glad he did, or I would not be here to write about it. Imagine how England would be different without WWI. The generations would not have turned the way they did, for certain. As part of the protest vs stupid WA voters....and as an anniversary present to myself....I bought a Gen 3 Glock 17. It's a police trade in/blue box. LOTS of holster wear but mechanically sound as a truck.

Did some side by side comparison shooting vs my Glock 19 carry pistol. It is shooting consistently left and a little down for me, compared too the Glock 19 using the same ammo. I think it's the police trigger pull??? It's a bit heavier than my G19.

Any other morons who want to weigh in on why I'd suddenly be shooting left and down a bit, I'd welcome the feedback. Sights seem fine, in side by side comparison to my G19, rear sight seems centered.

It has a hook that can be removed if you like, but I feel much more comfortable not relying solely on the special material to keep things in place. Although it appears to do it fine and people rave about not needing anything hooked to their belt. That approach isn't for me, though.

It's the tuckable version, which is nice, but I wear suits or sportcoats almost all year so I generally just keep it hidden that way. I like having the option on days I'm more casual, though.

Posted by: Ben Had at November 11, 2018 07:47 PM (2TTOn)

Nah. Belly aside, it's not as secure. I don't want someone drawing my pistol from my holster easier than I can.

I go with a 3 or 4:30 position, strong-side. Or a 9 o-clock if I'm carrying left handed.

If I was sitting down all day, like a truck driver, that might change my answer.

153 The trick to carrying everyday is ...to carry...everyday. I have been doing that for 22 years, ever since I retired from the Navy (hint- Navy is kinda funny about carrying concealed while in uniform, yeah I know weird). Many ways/styles of carry and many different firearms, but ALWAYS carry. Always. When that bad shit happens, it happens unexpectedly and righteffing now. I love you people and want you safe on the other side of the crap on the horizon (or next door).

154 I have been having this ongoing discussion about my carry situation - I thought I had settled on the answer, but I am not satisfied with it.

Just a quick review, went from a belly band that did not do the trick, and moved to a shoulder hoslter that was elastic (and black) and then another that is white. (this goes under my dress shirts and sports coat).

The white one is tighter than the black one, and I moved back to the black one with darker shirts.

But with this there are a couple of things - its a bit warm, will work fine in the winter, but summer is gonna be a bear. Also, I kinda get the ettes and their need to be free of their bras at the end of the day. So starting to fail on my comfort category, but still up there on concealment and security.

So I am going to keep trying.

165 I carry one of two hammer-fired pistols in an IWB holster at 4:30. Pistol 1 is an M1911 with a 5-inch barrel but more lately I carry a Ruger Security 9 with a 4-inch barrel.

Both my pistols have a thumb safety and are carried cocked and locked.

Find a holster that is comfortable and accessible. Practice drawing from that holster.

Carry an extra magazine. Magazines can and do fail. I know this from personal experience. Practice clearing failures and dropping and inserting magazines.

I always carry Hornady Critical Defense JHP rounds. Practice with your carry rounds as well. Some shoot differently from FMJ range ammo.

I practice at the range at least 3 times a month. I seek out other training once or twice a year because firing at the range is not the same as tactical training.

Learn the laws of your state and of states you travel through or visit.

Visit Mr. Branca's Law of Self-Defense website regularly.

Consider carry insurance.

Practice situational awareness. Always know what is going on around you. I have left places that didn't feel "right." The first rule of a gun fight is to have a gun but the best gun fight is the one you avoid!

You must be the most calm, level-headed and polite person in the world when you carry. Legally and practically this matters. You do not have to draw and fire a firearm to be charged with a lot of things.

Be safe.

166 OK, here's a question about how you balance your carry choice with the scenarios you're preparing for.

Bad guy pointing at a good guy in a 7-11, you're at close quarters and a short .380 or snub nosed anything is fine. And way easier to carry.

Madman with an AR shooting up a nightclub is going to be too far away to hit with a 3" barrel, so how do you prepare to be the good guy with the gun?

169 Range day:

Today we did "shoot and move" - taking a cue from that 13 y.o. girl shooting 3-gun video, we set up targets at the base of big trees along a forest trail.
4 targets, a Mozambique each, move to next. (with an exception for the 5 shot J-frame)
Tried a couple courses firing without stopping, too.
It was ... interesting. Revealing, even. Coulda been worse.

The laser on the P290 seemed to help.

Bottom line, we still got some shots landing in the right places, and a lot of good reasons to do this again.

Loose clothing has been the trick for me, normal wear is jeans and sweats, so the baggy sweat hides the weapon well.

174 What is it with Europeans and their clunky revolver designs?
Posted by: Semi-Literate Thug at November 11, 2018 07:38 PM (rGIJb)

They started out with the lefaucheux pinfire design, and anything seems sleek and swift after that.

Actually the pistol was like a saber, it was the mark of authority not of use, and so big, bulky and in a clamshell holster that marks the officer is desired. Functionality was secondary, and even when they went to better designs they went with whimpy cartridges.

Pistols in warfare really didn't come into focus until trench warfare during WWI.

I mean, other than for the US that always considered pistols to be very important, and the Spanish that considered them to be the mark of a gentleman, not just an officer.

Yes, wearing your gun just above the goods in your pants.

Mr. Jen and I both have these for those occasions when you can't conceal well in a conventional IWB or belly band/Pistol wear type of holster. They are safe, work well and are comfortable. Our preference is smart carry.

Yes. Stay with the soft, neoprene type. Leather is too clunky and uncomfortable. Plan on using it to carry a small gun, such as a 380 as a back up or if there is no other option in your dressing situation, as your primary.

This one is on Well Armed Woman, but Mr. Jen has one and likes it immensely. It has a garter to aid in it staying up and a thumb latch to secure over the back strap of your gun. Very comfortable and adds little bulk, so it doesn't show. Even so, you still want to be aware of not crossing legs over knee, etc. LOL.

206 @156. I was intrigued by various revolvers that fire .45 Colt and .410 shotgun rounds but most of these revolvers have drawbacks that make them undesirable to me. Look up Paul Harrell Taurus Judge on youtube for three reviews.

CCI makes shotshells for virtually every pistol. I have at least one box of 10 for my 9 mm and my 45 ACP pistols. I have a .45 Colt single action revolver but it is not a carry gun.

For the few times you are ever likely to need shotshells from a pistol the CCI rounds just seem like a better idea rather than a really heavy revolver firing a very limited number of .45 Colt rounds.

I shoot a couple of 6.5mm cartridges but don't have any experience with the Creedmore. I think it's the same as the 260 Remington with a different shoulder angle, if I'm not mistaken.

211 Grey Fox. Seems to me that a larger pattern would be more effective in a clench situation.

If by "clench" you mean at grappling distance, I would think that if you are that close you could just push the muzzle of the gun into the other guy and pull the trigger. Hard to miss at that range...

--

I bought a $25 one from "blitzshot" on Amazon that I've been very pleased with for my Shield 9mm. It prints a bit in jeans, and shows a bit differently under khakis, but someone would probably need to be looking at it to puzzle out what it was.

It's not my first choice of carry, but it's nice to have the option. I usually will go with it if I know I'll be without my jacket and need to be very presentable or up close with people. I won't be getting into a quick-draw situation (probably ever), but it's nice to know I could maybe get my family to a fire exit or even just hole up and wait with a surprise if it came to it.

I might not stop a shooting, but by gosh I'm going to do my best to save my childrens' lives.

I don't think there's a verified example out there of new exotic boutique ammo being effectively cited by prosecutors as an aggravating factor in an otherwise legal shoot.

Having said that, I'm damned sure that I don't want to be the test case. So it's standard ordinary modern hollowpoints for me. Either Speer Gold Dot or Hornady Critical Duty/Defense, depending on the pistol. The modern hollowpoints are so good now that there's really not much of a difference between them in terms of effectiveness, so there's no advantage to using exotic ammo.

205 I've read it's harder to make bullets than it is to make a gun.

Making bullets isn't difficult, unless you require copper jacketing. Making modern gunpowder, primers, and cartridge casings would be more difficult, I think.
Posted by: Grey Fox at November 11, 2018 08:13 PM (bZ7mE)

Making jacketed bullets is just a matter of getting the dies, lead wire and jacket cups, and a hydraulic press. In fact, you can get the dies to make the jacket cups from sheet copper. As I recall, one of the companies that made the dies also made a kit to use spent 22lr cases to make .224 bullets. They'd basically be varmint bullets because of the thin brass, but it was a legit bullet for .223/5.56.

I looked into it years ago as part of my prepping thing, but realized that for me it wasn't worth the $.

267 A couple'o random thoughts.....

* In addition to your "Final Thoughts" of "Get Licensed/Get Training/Get Educated", I'd add "Practice(!)". Life-or-death shooting skills are basically muscle-memory. IMO, if you can't break away at least every other month to run a couple of boxes of ammo through your gun, you're doing yourself a disservice.

* As has been mentioned above, there is a difference between a belt and a gun belt. Get a good gun belt.

* The key to IWB carry (which is how I normally carry) is to admit that those 32/34/36" pants you wore in college don't really fit you any more. If you're like most of us [**A.J. raises his hand.**], they don't really fit you before you try to carry a gun IWB. Get the next larger size of pants.

* And the key to OWB carry is to wear loose shirts. I used to wear hawaiian shirts, but lately I just wear something big and loose. Dark colors conceal better than light; Patterns conceal better than solids.

* The class you take to get your CCW license is just that.....a licensing class. It is a big mistake to think that a CCW class is in any way training. It is not.

* If you shoot enough, you're going to begin to wear out some of your gun's parts...primarily springs. For a Glock, that'll be somewhere between 3000 and 5000 rounds. If your gun starts to act wonky, try replacing the springs. They aren't that expensive, and it isn't hard to do.

* While it works for some guys, I've always had a close enough attachment to my femoral artery that I've never been able to be comfortable with the idea of appendix carry.

And get out and practice.

285 I know this is off topic but Instapundit had a fascinating link to a sound recording made by the Americans at the end of WW1 that picked up the actual end of the war, Cannons and machine guns firing right up to 11;00 then silence then it picked up birds tweeting. Really amazing:
There's an interesting little article that goes with it.

296 i sent in my CnR FFL application back in August.

of course, the USPS quit tracking my registered letter 3 days after i mailed it, and there is no way to check to see if the money order was cashed w/o giving those assholes another $6.

even my carrier and his stuporvisor could find out more info.

from the local (CA) gun blogs, i expected news in 60 days.

Fryday i found a number to contact the ATFE licensing bureau.

my license was mailed 9 October, but someone substituted a "3" for a "1" as the second digit of my zip code, so it went to Bass Lake, up by Yosemite, rather than to me here in The Valley, like totally.

called back, got the head lady, explained my situation, and my concerns for both my personal data, AND liability for possible misuse of the document.

she canceled the first one, put notes in it's file that it was misaddressed, so that, in theory, *if* it is actually misused, i'm "covered"... and will be sending me a new one via e-mail early this week, hard copy to follow.

with my Certificate of Eligibility, i will, once again be able to mail order ammo, and certain other benefits also accrue.

go me!

320 Carry a Glock 36 (.45ACP) usually in a custom ankle holster. I like that carry option since I don't have to worry about the pistol "printing" in around my waistband. You do need a good ankle holster with the sheep-shearling padding for best comfort, however.

Only disadvantage of the ankle holster is you can't wear shorts but I typically don't. I have a Berreta Tomcat (.32ACP) that I carry in a FIST leather pocket holster in my right rear pants pocket for those occaisions. I like the FIST pocket holsters because they have a kydex tab to push the holster clear of the pistole.

Arguments about action type, caliber, etc. are ballistic masturbation until you have a core battery, ammo, training.

Any gun will do if you will do.

After you put a box of ammo through a G36, you definitely feel it. BUT you've got a .45ACP not much bigger than a Walther PPK/S but much more powerful. Glock really came up a with a winner in the G36: great pointability and ergonomics in a perfectly-sized semi-auto.

348 Springfield 1911 Loaded Galco outside waistband is my 80% carry gun. Tried clip on pancake holsters but they make it stick out much further.

Walther Ppk for hot weather but still working on holster. I have at least a dozen holsters for four guns but mostly only use two.

Inside waistband is great for concealment but I find it uncomfortable, possibly due to being slightly older with a slightly expanding waistline.

And remember, it isn't a carry gun unless you carry it.

350 Well, f****...I always miss the fun thread cuz' I'm always busy during it....
So one day when folks still are on when I see it, I need to ask about carry for less-catered-to pistols. My EDC is a Kahr PM-9, simply because it's the slimmest and lightest single-stack 9mm around. Wife and I have matching ones, because I'm of a mind of efficiency in magazine stock. Also, DAO and a trigger pull like butter.

Reason: I'm 5'7", and weigh 143 soaking wet...any double-stack (and I have some) is just right out...not only for the printing (which sometimes I care, sometimes I don't)...but the WEIGHT.
So my question would be...where do you Morons and 'Ettes that carry "not-Glocks or Shields" get your IWB holsters?
I prefer leather, but right now am fine with my Blackhawk (!) kydex...but I'll admit, it's WAY LESS comfortable than something in leather.
Any recommendations for leather IWB suppliers, or crafters, for the less popular makes?
(BTW, I doubt anybody is still here, because morons and squirrels, but whatevs...I can always paste next week).

357 I live in shall issue state (TX). You just apply, do a background check, take fingerprints, take a class, written test, shooting test and then get the license which is good for 5 years.

They relaxed it a bit, where you don't have to retake the class or get fingerprinted again to renew. License is good for 5 years. They also changed to open carry back in 2016.

I rarely open carry because I like the element of surprise. But I like that I can open carry when I hunt oir hike ion the woods and that takes away any penalties if your firearm happens to "print" on your clothing.

I used to carry a Beretta 92FS but changed to a CZ 82 because its smaller and easier to conceal in the summer.

In the winter when I can cover them up with a duster I wear a chopped AK on 1 side (AK psitol) and PPS 43C on the other side so I don't list to starboard while walking.

Carrying all that iron is good exercise.

361 Full time main carry is a Ruger LCP II, I know that unless events go south I will carry more than defend with it. It will be on me.Horseback, one of three, a Colt 1911A1, or a Colt Lawman Mk III until summer sweat starts to rust them, then it's a stainless SW M-640.I have CCW the 1911A1 it carries better than the Lawman. But heck three to five pounds is heavy.Holsters are IWB Kydex Fobus except the Lawman which has no current holsters made for it.OWB is Blackhawk and We the People. The 1911A1 I carry Skeeter Skelton style, Mexican on the hip no holster. Unless it's horseback or OWB then it is a Blackhawk Polymer.
No I've been carrying it for forty years Mex style and haven't shot myself yet.

362 G43 OWB in a Null Holster. I've been using Ken's products for 25+ years. He uses pretty thin (~1/8") unlined leather, that's molded to a particular make and model. I like it as it adds' little to the overall width. He's not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Other mode of carry is the 511 undershirt (white or black, take your pick. V neck or not) for either the 43 or an old SW Model #38 Airweight (the one with the shrouded hammer).

Interesting story about the #38. During the decades that the Michigan State Police wore cross draw holsters, they also were issued the #38 and carried them in their right pants pocket. The bottom of the pocket was sewn and reinforced, to allow carry without the weapon shifting.
A number of us from other agencies thought that would be a "good thing" and did the same mod's and picked up the #38.
So now ya know a little factoid about the #38, and about me...

363 I live in MA, which is may issue for lack of a better category. In the end, it's very dependent on the town you live in, as the local PD is the issuing body. Inside the greater Boston metro area is pretty much never issue to may issue at best, but outside the city it's somewhere between may issue and shall issue in an ever changing map. Luckily, I live in one of the basically shall issue areas, so they accepted "All Lawful Purposes" as the need/reason. Everything else was the same basic stuff: take course, fill out application, pay fee, pass background check, wait a couple months.

I carry a Shield 9mm in an RCS Morrigan IWB, worn at 3:30 or so. Printing is a big no-no in MA, so that means compact and IWB. It is easier in winter, though coats bring their own challenges for how to draw quickly and safely. I'm looking at switching to AIWB specifically to solve the long winter coat issues, but haven't found a holster plus ride height that's comfortable when sitting yet.
