Politico: Democratic Edge on Generic Congressional Ballot Narrows to Just +3

Hope?

According to the poll, 43 percent of registered voters would vote for the Democratic congressional candidate in their district — only slightly more than the 40 percent who would vote for the Republican candidate. Eighteen percent of registered voters are undecided.

Among those who say they are very likely to vote or have already voted, Democrats lead by 4 percentage points, 47 percent to 43 percent.

Here's the problem for the GOP: The NeverTrump/liberal Republicans who are going to try to tank an election again, so that we'll put them back in charge of ruining our party and our country.

Despite the close overall result, the poll shows Democrats coalescing behind their party more than Republicans. Nearly nine-in-10 Democratic voters, 89 percent, say they will vote for the Democratic candidate for Congress in their district. By comparison, just 77 percent of GOP voters say they will vote for the Republican candidate

Update: Rasmussen finds the generic ballot is all tied up.

33 I've been reading thru the Election 2016 threads. There was some discussion while the results were solidifying, that it looked as if the polling was about 2.7 - 3% off in most of the contested races, and certainly for Trump. So 3% would be in line with that.

Posted by: grammie winger at November 05, 2018 03:51 PM (lwiT4)

34 I don't believe that "not coalescing" bullshit. Republican voters I know who are not big Trump fans understand what's at stake. Kind of like when we pulled the lever for McLame and Romney.
The big factor here is going to be people who show up, irrespective of affiliation or what they told pollsters, and vote Republican. It's about your own self interest.

Posted by: Huck Follywood,

It takes 5,000 calls to get 500 replies to any telephone poll. That means fully 90% of voters slam down the freakin' phone rather than talk to a pollster.

Since the basis of leftism is virtue-signalling, and since many conservatives live in rightfully paranoid Kafkaesque dystopian where they fear the consequences if the openly discuss supporting Trump, it seems almost certain that the vast majority of those 90% hangups are Trump supporters not wanting to "out" themselves to a stranger on the phone. A lib would merrily brag to anyone and everyone about Orange Man Bad.

Therefore, the polls only measure the 10% of the electorate willing to talk to pollsters -- and a non-representative 10% at that. The other 90% - -unmeasured - -are almost certainly vastly more pro-Trump.

I'd love to see those same numbers in 2016 just to compare.

I do think there's a lot of voters that try to straddle the whole "I'm a reasonable Republican and Trump concerns me" to pollsters and friends/family but ultimately votes just like an out and proud Trump supporter.

It does though always seem like our wing enjoys fighting among themselves more than Democrats do.

Why would Republicans feel this way? Have they started believing #FakeNews after having seen through and rejected it? Is it the lack of progress? The only reason Trump hasn't been able to achieve more is because of too many RINOs. Are they being duped into voting for spoilers as almost happened in Montana?

As to the NeverTrumpers at this point, I think it's pretty well established that they aren't Republicans. They never were. Not in any normal comprehension of the English language.

So, from here on out, NeverTrumpers, new or old, are to be referred to as Democrats. If they can't/won't recognize that Trump is doing those conservative, actual Republican, things that they have insisted upon for years to decades, then they have abdicated their titles. To the extent that they had authority, they abdicated that too.

They have also indicated that they're pretty damn stupid and useless, so they have that going for them.

I'm not sure what has happened since the 2016 election, other than the fact of the election itself, to make them now want a Democrat in that office.

Right.

I focus on Michigan because I know the state and can tell when I'm being bullshitted.

On top of that, this same pollster wants me to believe that the rural areas are going to go democrat by huge margins.

Sorry, but it just doesn't make sense. If the economy was in the tank, unemployment at 15% and taxes rising I could buy it, but not now.

Gee, on one hand, Trump - like Hitler (or so I'm told, I'm a millenial, they didn't teach Roman history in school) - has used his power to divide us by:

1. having a great economy, the best since 1998, whenever that was. I bet the president back then was sweating the midterms.

2. having rallies.

3. pointing out foreign folks trying to invade our country.

If you ask me, Hitler should've done something about the people invading his country, but that's why he's history's bad guy.

As for having rallies, it's not like those matter, right?

Anyway, my point is the polls are shit from what the pollsters are telling us now, Trumpler has massive positive upsides and is popular...and the donks have a bunch of old women who get naked for no reason.

Tomorrow may be an epic blow out sterilization of the DNC from american politics.

Yes, it's somewhat self-selecting, but it doesn't matter where Trump goes. Massive response despite essentially exclusive coverage from the MFM that Orange Man Bad. So, attendees may or may not appreciably support their local talent (and elections are local), but they damn well understand what's at stake in the big picture because Trump is drawing them in in massive doses. They will support Trump via their local election.

I think those days are long gone and 2016 pretty much backs me up on that. Most everyone polling had the dems up by 4-5 with a few ties until literally days before the election but Republicans picked up seats.

The polls started to tighten two days before the election but the majority of the Generic Congressional polls in November had the dems up before election day, some by a ridiculous amount.

172 I've come to agree that the best course of action for a conservative to take with pollsters is to tell them they're voting D and then do the opposite. If conservatives did that en masse, they would drive the pollsters out of business.
Posted by: Donna&&&&&&V

I disagree, I think a big reason Republicans had a mass retirement is the expert pollsters told them there was a blue wave.

Same with a lot of public policy.

Unfortunately, elected leaders look at polling and many "swing" votes put their finger in the air and that his how they govern.

So if huge amounts of conservatives no longer participate in polling, I could see Republicans going squishy once in office.

I guess I don't see a good reason for Republicans to opt out of telling people their opinion outside of just beclowning polling firms.

I call BS on the 90% Republican number. The Dems have been hardcore progressive nationally since 2016, the Kavanaugh deal, the Antifa riots.

Locally they have tried to match the state sentiments but they have been called out as fake centrists in the red/purple states and in states like Illinois they are running as pure progressive to lock down the big crappy cities but by doing so alienating blue collar white working dems.

We'll see, but I am encouraged.

This is the basic purpose of the poles in the modern media. To demoralize the right. The question is how much do the MSM NPC's have to lie to make the numbers work.
When the Dems have a truly insurmountable lead, the MSM NPC act much differently on TV and the Dem candidates in their public speaking.

Key give away, the constant telling of the Reps and PDT that they must stop campaigning.... for the good of the country. This means they know the Rep rhetoric is working and the Dem rhetoric is a dead end....therefore shut up they explain.

So, let me get this straight.

The Democrats are basing their comeback on the EXTREMISM!!!!!1111!! of a President who-

1) has strictly followed the Constitution

2) Has made his reputation for honesty by honoring and delivering on the promises that he made his voter

3) has worked to uphold the law and the order of law

He is all in on Government spying on us, for our own good... right up until I remind him of how he paid for his last year of College (growing pot).

Notice that Dems comfort themselves when they lose in a red district by saying "Well, she only lost by 3 points instead of by 10, so that's a good sign." If Sen. Pedophile is nervous about winning in NJ, well that's a good sign, even if he wins the election.

Yeah, she does. I understand Crowley is still on the ballot. Now I don't know doodle about the politics there, but my impression has been that Crowley got blindsided in the primary, when he barely campaigned, thinking it was in the bag, and Occasional-Cortex won with an 11% turnout.

Now that being the case, maybe his former constituents would vote for Crowley anyway.

At least, so I hope. I want to see Perez et al., who said that this Commie dingbat was the new face of the Democrat Party, eat dukey.

337 Useless poll data:1) President, Nationally2) "Generic" Congressional Ballot
We don't elect a President by national popular vote, so that statistic is utterly useless. Of the 435 HOR districts only about 50-60 are remotely competitive and among the non-competitive districts Democrats have at least 40-50 more than the GOP - so of course the "generic" ballot is going to skew DEM, they have a ton more non-competitive districts.

379 I already mailed in my vote two and a half weeks ago, but it's House district OR-3, including downtown Portland, which means it hasn't gone GOP since 1952. The state as a whole is *slightly* more sane, but no Senate race up this year either. Aside from sending in what tiny bit of money I could spare along with making a post online, I'm mostly just on the sidelines watching, here.
Tomorrow could be bad or it could be good. If it's bad, I don't want to read, hear, or think about it until some time has passed and I can get around to it. If it's good, then things are okay, but the way they report counting results is terrible where the same race can flip from "It's good! It's bad. It's good! It's bad. It's good!" multiple times in a night as they tally ballots in chunks and it'd be easier to just wait and skip to the end result. As it is, I'm not entirely sure what I'll occupy my time with waiting for eventual word that things are overally confirmed good or confirmed bad, because staying glued to every single "Breaking news! _____ has pulled ahead by 0.14% with 40% of precincts reporting!" is unduly tiring.

My younger brother is like that too. Many people treat political party membership like sports fandom. When devoted Packers fans move to Seattle or Miami, they normally remain Packers fans. My brother views politics like that. He was very upset when I changed teams. Instead of picking politicians based on policy, it's tribal for them, which is why pointing out the inconsistencies of their voting record compared to their own lifestyle doesn't work. Sadly, it's hard to think of anything the dems could do that would change his mind.

395 Generic Ballot is how Hillary won the Popular Vote and still lost.

When deep D districts are 90%+ for the Dems, it's easy to have a majority in some generic count. But every vote over the majority is moot.
Posted by: Mr. Peebles

Exactly. Her "popular vote win" nationally basically came from California. Didn't win her even one extra electoral college vote.. but it did bring her up to the predicted generic vote percents.

Which tells us that generic polls are friggin worthless.. especially at this point. If accurate, it means some districts running Dems will be blowouts.. so what????

418 RE: Generic Ballot
There are 9 Congressional Districts in MA (for now). Four of those districts the D is running unopposed and among the nine of them only MA-9 is even remotely competitive. Dems will win, by simple math alone, about 80% of the "generic" congressional vote in MA and yet Geoff Diehl (GOP Senate candidate against Liewatha) is certainly going to get substantially more than 20% of the vote.

One thing people miss about the popular vote stuff... Republicans were trying to win the election, that is, they were trying to accumulate electoral votes. If the contest had been decided by popular vote Trump's team would have put a lot some effort into places like CA and NY, which they basically ignored but to swing through for fundraising once or twice.

424 It sure seems to me as if we have transformed as a country into two tribal camps, with a whole lot of hate on both sides, and it is the hate that is driving the turnout.

The hatred on the left is plainly evident. If you live in a major metro area anywhere, no matter the state, you run the risk of having in-your-face hatred if you wear or display anything Republican on your body or your vehicle.

They hate us and we hate the idea of them being in charge, because of what it would mean to our our principles, our beliefs, and more. Thus we hate them for what they believe.

I have been a voter for a very long time and have never seen the polarity as great as it is today.
