The fact is that the first time we had the ability to measure the ozone layer we saw this hole. We didn't know if it was always there. We didn't know if had just appeared. We didn't know anything about it because we didn't see it form, we just saw it on the first readings we had. We stil don't know if it's natural or not.
And the ban on antiperspirants didn't seem to do much of anything. Every year they would claim that they saw it lessening ... but then it would expand and then contract ... So they finally stopped talking about it, altogether.
And now they want to make a peep about it and then duck back under the covers.
From what I recall, everyone in Australia should have died of skin cancer by now.

You have no clue. I saw Rush at the Milwaukee Auditorium on the Rush to Excellence tour. Show opened with him in profile/silhouette with his gigantic cigar. Great show and people hung on every word. What he said mattered back then. He would be the first to break new polls and had legit inside info. Now, he's devolved into just another Bill Mitchell or Larry Schweikart, a guy who will tell you everything is great as you're about to get destroyed.

I don't watch the show (SNL), but while out around the noonish hour to get lunch, I did hear the clip in question on Rush.
They giggled like school girls about it. Rush pointed out that before the show, they have two live rehearsals, and Lorne Michaels cuts out anything that is not funny. So yeah, this is not spontaneous, it was written that way to mock Dan Crenshaw.

You might, you know. I saw the aurora borealis *once* in my parents' old driveway in Grand Rapids Michigan. Didn't have to go too far to see it. About 43° North latitude and -8° Fahrenheit.
If it had been in a movie, I'd have thought it was ridiculous and over the top. It's that mindblowing. Like seeing sunlight from underwater. It shimmers in real time - I always figured that was time lapse video, but newp. You can see it move.

The article coyly mentions that ozone is "made in the tropics" but notably fails to mention how, because that is an inconvenient truth. Ozone is created when a photon of ultraviolet light from the Sun hits a molecule of ordinary O2 oxygen, splitting it into two reactive atoms of monatomic oxygen. Some of the lone atoms meet up with similar loners, and join up to form O2 again. Others glom onto an existing O2 molecule, and form a molecule of ozone (O3).
This happens mostly in the tropics, where sunlight is strongest, and where it impinges almost straight down into the atmosphere.
Why is the "ozone hole" over Antartica? Because during the long Antarctic winter, the south polar region gets no Sunlight. The ozone that manages to drift down there from the tropics simply dies from attrition, because the stuff is very reactive, and will eventually react with something, and cease to exist as O3.
But all through the Antarctic winter, ozone is still being formed in the tropics.
It's indeed curious, that nobody knew about the "ozone hole" until we had polar-orbit satellites with instrumentation that could measure upper-atmosphere concentrations of various gases, isn't it?

I don't know if that first picture is Northern Lights, really. If it is, it is atypical. Predominant color is green, with red, pink, and blue showing up the brighter displays. I don't fart this off. Scientists whom I know and respect were concerned about the ozone layer for reasons that made sense. (Whether they were well-founded or not, I don't know, not being especially knowledgeable in this area, but the postulated mechanisms - ozone depletion catalyzed by Cl atoms or NOx molecules - are certainly plausible.
OTOH, I am extremely skeptical of the global warming crap because the proposed mechanism is not catalytic, but rather stoichiometric, in nature.

I wasn't sure what to think about Trump when he entered the primaries. I'd never paid much attention to him. The more I listened to what he said, the more I warmed up to him. I think the real turning point for me was when he went after the news media's bullshit. I suspect Rush went the same route.

What has happened in CO is analogous to what will happen to the country at large with unchecked immigration (though not as bad, obviously, since Californians are still generally Americans). First, you don't know the politics of people moving to Texas from California. When my mother passes, WE'RE likely to move there, to escape the People's Republic. I would expect that many Californians moving there are similarly motivated. It's like blaming people escaping from East Germany for being Communists.
Second, you failed to distinguish people who are Californians from people who had lived temporarily in California before moving on to infest somewhere else. So do you want to take ownership of every illegal alien in Texas as a Texan? How about when the Reds turn Texas Commie, and then Alabamans are complaining that the fucking Texans are infesting Alabama? All when a little bit of investigation will reveal that those "Texans" previously where "Californians" but before that were New Englanders, New Jerseyites, New Yorkers, etc. And when they fuck up Alabama, Mississippians will bitch about the Alabamans - but ultimately, the primary tumor was and always has been in the Northeast.

I'm not sure I agree. The industrial middle class as we know it has only existed for 150 years or so. It requires enough automation to produce a lot of wealth but not so much that it doesn't require a lot of labor. The existence of a middle class may be entirely transitory.

Austin was weird when I was there. It was only for a day - I was in San Antonio for work and had a weekend day to burn. San Antonio was really nice. I would consider moving there if the climate weren't completely unacceptable.

I was at Quesnel Lake during the Chinook salmon run. They spawn and die in a short run of the Quesnel River. Hundreds of bald eagles flock there to eat dead salmon. Took a walk along the river bank. The place absolutely reeked of dead fish and eagle shit, and the lower limbs of big trees were festooned with half-eaten salmon carcasses. Looked like a Salvador Dali painting.

Yeah, the guy who built the kit moved the valve from between the pilots legs to over the left shoulder. Denver had over 2700 hours logged as a pilot, so he knew what he was doing.
Oddly he'd been busted for drunk driving a bunch of times so the FAA wouldn't renew his pilot's license on a medical. The day he died he was flying illegally.

Although the poll claims that Gillum is leading by 5%, the other data from the poll, when applied to actual early vote numbers, tells a much different story -- the story of a photo-finish which DeSantis should be favored to win.
This poll (by St. Pete Polls) surveyed over 3000 Floridians from all over the state, and reports extensively on who has already voted, who plans to vote, and what percentage of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents are voting for DeSantis and Gillum.
According to the poll, 67% of all who plan to vote in Florida have already voted. When applied to the early vote data, we would then expect (roughly) 7.2 million total votes by end of day tomorrow. In 2016, about 9.5 million Floridians voted, so 7.2 million is a reasonable number considering how motivated voters are for this midterm.
When the percentage of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents who are voting for DeSantis and Gillum are applied to the early and mail-in vote totals, DeSantis has banked 2,311,262 votes and Gillum has banked 2,515,250. This is a lead of about 104,000 votes for Gillum.
However, 55.4% of Gillum voters have already voted as compared with only 41.8% of DeSantis voters who have already voted.
Based on the actual early vote numbers, I expect 55% of the remaining votes will go to DeSantis and 45% will go to Gillum.
Since there are about 2.38 million votes left to be cast, I expect DeSantis will receive approximately 1.30 million additional votes tomorrow, while Gillum will receive approximately 1.07 million additional votes tomorrow.
The final tally, based on these calculations, is DeSantis 3.616 million and Gillum 3.587 million -- or DeSantis 50.5% to Gillum 49.5%.
The numbers for the Senatorial race should be even slightly more favorable for the Republican, Rick Scott, over the Democrat, Bill Nelson.

Yeah, hatchery fish return to whatever location they were dumped into the ocean.
Alaska usually opens up dipnetting for locals on those (because there's no river for them to go into, so they'd just be wasted).
Probably a few of the wild-spawned fish get lost every year, which, yeah, would enable them to pioneer new rivers.
Too bad we don't still have the saber-toothed salmon around. Those would be a challenging catch, I think.

I bounced around as a kid ( KY, later moved to PA, then my dad came to CO for family and work and so on).
The different regions of the US all do have the upshot and the downside. My old man and my mom decided to settle in the Front Range, near my uncle, aunt and grandma. That was when I was ten or eleven, my brother was seven or eight.
CO was like a wonderland in the 90s/00s. It's a place I'm strongly considering leaving now.
If we can't turn it around, the smart thing to do is bail. It's sad to see us go this way

I have all the pipes and wires and linkages disconnected now, and the torque converter has been unbolted from the flex plate. Once I get the transfer case out of the way, the transmission is free to be removed.
None of it has gone real easy. Ford seems to have a passion to use inappropriate fasteners, and to locate them such that one cannot use air or electric tools to spin them out. It's diabolical.
The good thing is, if I get it up and running, similar trucks are advertised locally here in Alberta anywhere from two to five thousand bucks, so if I don't break the piggy bank buying tranny parts, I will have a truck I can sell for well over what I have in it.

One thing that pisses me off is the Jay Webber has simply not competed even one iota for the seat to replace Rodney Frelinghuysen.
His opponent and the Donks have pourd millions into buying up what looks like every slot across all media in the state and online.
I have seen literally two Jay Webber commercials in the last 4 months.
If the Donks win control of the House it's going to be through turning Red Seats in Blue States Blue.
I simply refuse to believe that the Donk hate for Trump and his style is going to win the day over the real world accomplishments.
But who knows what the fuck these dipshits who happen to inhabit my country will do and what motivates them because logic and reason apparently do not.
If the Donks win the House the would be a travesty if they win both houses then that would be a catastrophe ase everything grinds to a halt and Trump is impeached and probably convicted because I could easily see the GOP swamp rats like Romney and Sassehole voting to convict.

Here in NY, polls open at 6 a.m. I plan on being at the grade school down the block when the polls open. I've always hated voting in the evening. And this year, surprise surprise surprise, I actually have a contested House race (the one with Occassional-Cortex) where my vote actually has meaning; I haven't seen anyone oppose the Donk (Joseph Crowley) on the ballot in over a decade. Now I have Occassional-Cortex and Crowley on the Dem side and Pappas on the Repub side. Should be interesting to see if Crowley gets reelected (being on the Working Families Party line) without even campaigning. As much as I hate Crowley, I hate Ocassional-Cortex more. Her losing will not help the 'Democrat Socialists' (talk about an oxymoron!).

This is odd. We've been hearing for months now how well Republican fundraising was going and how badly the Dems were struggling to raise funds. I'd have thought the R's would have outspent them on ads. Maybe it was a few last minute donations from the likes of Soros and Steyer.

The GOP seems to be spending an extraordinary amount on consultants to consult but not run ads.
Really the only ads I have seen from any GOP candidate in NJ is Bob Hugin's because he is self funding.
I have literally seen 2 ads from Webber in the last four months and handful from Leaonard lance and that's pretty much it.
Meanwhile I can't turn on the fucking televison without seeing a "Mike" Sherrol ad or Tom Molanowski ad.
The GOP is keeping that money for leadership and not doling it out to run ads as far as I can tell.

Jersey is a solid blue state so if the GOP is going to change the calculus here they needed to be saturating the airwaves with ads and not depending on my historically red district staying red maybe they looked at throwing money in NJ as a waste, fair enough but they seem to have spent very little on ads in states that could be the difference elsewhere.

I am not young, so a pregnancy really would be surprising and very unlikely. But, just the way I was feeling was so unusual.

Yeah, I know it's not completely impossible, but usually people of my age need a little bit more help.
Also, I don't think we do it enough to worry about that. I mean, yes, I know all it takes is one time. And, we do it, like, a lot when we are together, but we don't see each other often enough that it's something to worry about.

For one, there is only a 12-24 hour period in any given month it's even possible. For two, the swimmers have to get up there. And even if something is conceived, it still has to attach itself to the woman's uterus. So to me, it sounds like there are a lot of moving parts that have to line up just right.
