An IT worker at a medical facility made a remarkable discovery about iPhones and Apple watches earlier this month, after a freshly installed MRI machine appeared to disable every iOS device in the hospital. 1. For Apple to make products that are fatally vulnerable to a commonly used, odorless, and tasteless industrial gas is totally negligent. There should be a class-action suit begun.
2. Large commercial and/or institutional users of helium should have helium recovery systems in place. There is not an unlimited supply of the stuff. Installations that waste vast quantities to the atmosphere are not doing themselves, or anyone else a lot of good.

Helium is the product of the breakdown of radioactive minerals, mainly found in primary igneous rock. When rock of that nature occurs as the basement to oil and gas reservoirs, some helium may leak into those reservoirs, and be recovered with the gas. Texas was the world's primary source for about a century. I think the Texas wells producing helium have now been all shut in, and all the world's helium now comes from the U.S. Strategic Helium Reserve, which was set up when airships were still a thing.
When that reserve is depleted, helium will become very scarce and expensive. Now, market forces will eventually correct that, but there will be pain.

Very, very little. Absent some special factors, there is no granparental rights.
While SMH's situation is an example of it being abused greatly, and in a spiteful way meant to punish her, we do pretty much want it to be parents who make the call.
One typical situation were it's a good thing to keep the grandparent away is a narcissist grandparent, for example. And the abusive situations.

Because the AI logic doesn't have sections identified as "AvoidPedestrianLogic" or "DontJumpSidewalk".
Machine Learning algorithms rely heavily on training data, and the "training" would probably involve many hours of driving over people and jumping sidewalks in order to establish the data sets.
But lets say that they managed to accomplish that, the car wouldn't even leave the parking area before targeting and chasing down the co-conspirators.
How do you provide the training data to avoid some people yet run over others?

Yes, that movie is still one of my holiday faves. The kids are all played by the same actors who were in the series, but some of the adults in the cast are different: Patricia Neal is the mother, Edgar Bergen is Grandpa Walton and Andrew Duggan (one of those ubiquitous 60s-70s era character actors) is the dad.

This is going to sound racist, but I have performed far too many rescue missions where companies thought that they would save some cash and have H1Bs perform the work and ended up with an empty budget, code that doesn't work, and missing the market window by a half a year or more.
Some cultures just don't have the chops, and the very, very few people in the world who can do this probably don't write any production code, they work at a much higher conceptual level, write PoCs at most and have a team of engineers actually do nearly all of the heavy lifting.
This isn't like Hollywood were some mastermind malevolent genius sits in a darkened basement and cranks out the sort of solutions that would do this thing.

I find watching an episode similar to being locked in a room with a person solemnly reading five "Sorry for your loss." Hallmark cards over and over and over.

OK, that sort of training data can be generated. The sensors that are in use now will have to have several generation improvements though.
I think it would be far, far easier to use the autonomous car to drive itself to the scene, then have installed some completely separate control system that would take over the steering and drivetrain controls. Perhaps use an overhead tracking drone as the eyes working double-duty as a radio relay to someone operating traditional radio-control systems off site.
I'm sure that 4chan could cobble up a system like that in a weekend.

Now that you mention it, that is an apt decision of half the episodes I watched as a child. (We were allowed to watch it with Grandma and Grandpa because it promoted the good values, and because my grandparents had lived the Waltons life in their own childhoods.) Yeah, lots of the feels, and these days I wouldn't make it through two episodes, let alone several seasons.

Amtrak is kind of that way, if you do it right. Really, stop laughing.
People complain about Amtrak because it takes days to get anywhere and it's always late and costs more than an airline ticket. Which is all true, if you think of it as a way to transport your a wretched human carcass. A coach ticket on a 737 will get you anywhere faster and cheaper than Amtrak.
But it's perfect for my parents, say. They're retired. They don't *have* to be anywhere. If it takes them four days instead of five hours to get to a national park or the southwest or the Willamette Valley, but they get their own little room and free meals and nice views and they can get up and wander around at stops from the midwest to wherever they're going, it's a hell of a lot more leisurely.

Probably St. Elmo's Fire, a static discharge. There were T-storms in the vicinity of Lakehurst that day. I remember reading that one thing that contributed to the rapid spread and destructiveness of the fire was the composition of the "dope" used to finish the colorless fabric envelope of the airship: red iron oxide plus powdered aluminum, in a resin of nitrocellulose lacquer. So, chemically speaking, the Nazis painted their airship with a mixture of thermite and smokeless powder. The article showed what happened when a postcard-sized piece of the Hindenburg's original fabric was placed in a spark gap. It ignited immediately, and burned brilliantly with a shower of sparks.

Zeppelin-style rigid airships and blimps are two different things. Rigid airships are, well, rigid, with an internal skeleton, and are way more resistant to external aerodynamic forces than blimps (which are basically just shaped balloons with no rigid skeleton at all).
Zeps had cruising speeds of 70-80 mph back in the 1930s. I can't help but think that would have increased a lot if they hadn't been abandoned.

I hope everybody had fun today. I didn't do politics at all today. Work, prepped meal for visiting missionary at church, picked daughter and her friend up from school, pizza, trick-or-treating, took them on a flashlight tour through the woods to a small family graveyard on the farm (the corgi started staring into the graveyard and barking, which was eerie), baked chocolate chip cookies, and they taught me how to play Fortnite and then they retired to sort candy out while giggling about whatever it is 13 year olds giggle about.
It was quite a nice, normal day enjoying what the United States of America offers, a relaxed time with family and friends.
I strongly recommend everyone take a day away from the noise periodically to remind yourself what exactly it is we are fighting for, lest we all grow weary of the battle.

This year, about 80-90 kids, at least, judging by candy exhaustion figures. Everything seemed earlier this year - few people on the street by eight PM. Youngest ones always cutest, some good ones this year, so young they could barely manage "trick or treat".

I went back into the Army in 2001, then deployed numerous times to Iraq between 2003-2009.
She needed me. She was 11 when I deployed the first time, and by my last deployment in 2008, she pretty much went off the rails.
So yes, I still feel guilt.

A lesser known airship tragedy is what happened to an Italian exploration team using the Norge to survey the Arctic. Mechanical issues is what doomed it. Among the lives claimed was Amundsen who was part of the rescue effort.

The Italia crashed on the ice, and the gondola detached. Most of the crew members in the gondola survived, but were marooned on the ice. Several others were in the airship, which drifted off uncontrolled. Its wreckage was never found.
The rescue efforts were a completely uncoordinated clusterfuck, and I think more people were killed in plane crashes trying to rescue the survivors than were killed in the original accident. Including Amundsen.
There was a 1970s movie "The Red Tent" about it. The movie is pretty uneven, but is worth watching anyway.

It would be interesting to crunch some numbers to see how a modern Zeppelin, powered by turboprop engines, would stack up against jet airliners, in terms of dollars per passenger-mile.
You know, as a freight platform, there might be one niche for which airships would be ideal: moving liquid natural gas to market. You build a fleet of big Zeppelins, designed to use methane as the lifting gas. It is lighter than air, but not so much as helium, of course. Cargo hold consists of huge Dewars of liquid methane, and methane that boils off goes to feed the engines that drive it. Should a lifting gas cell spring a leak, you have a supply of methane to replenish it. Deliver your cargo, take on a little fresh water as ballast, retain a little liquid methane for engine fuel, and motor on back to the source point.

As with ocean tankers, how long it takes for the tanker to get from Point A to Point B is unimportant; what matters is how many full tankers arrive per day at Point B, and how many empties at Point A.
With modern satellite weather prediction, Zeppelin tankers could be rerouted, or even grounded to avoid storms, if they were unable to simply fly above the storm layer.

Speaking of Lakehurst, NJ, a bit of trivia. First two battalions of para-Marines, US Marines trained as paratroopers, did so at Lakehurst. Later, just before and in early years of WWII, another battalion was formed in San Diego, at Camp Gillespie (now a general aviation airport). No drops performed, lots of combat alongside other famous units. Eventually disbanded and distributed to other Marine elements.

If you live in close proximity, I'd select some other kids from the neighborhood or school system that are less fortunate. Lavish them with your grandparently spoils, such as gifts, opportunities for camps, have hubs take them fishing, show up to watch them in plays, musicals, etc.
Make sure to let their parents know that you have your own grandchildren, but are estranged because your daughter rejects your Christianity. Make sure they know how much that hurts you and how much you love your own grandkids.
Your own grandkids wanting to see you and the community will wind up being the pressure that reconciles things for you.
So there you go, there is my outlandish plan for you.

Last year over 700 kids, and about as many this year (the couple on the corner keeps the Official Neighborhood Count and they haven't released the tally yet). But this year was extra special because along with the usual assortment of kids in costume, there was a man dressed as a cowboy leading a small horse. A real horse. We live in a small town on the edge of Kansas City. NavyDad proclaimed the horse the best costume ever.

Heh. That reminds me. I was going to rant bit, anyway. Today I changed the electricity provider for stately Peon Manor on the Alberta prairie. I didn't set out to do that, but that's what happened. To begin this tale, I had received a bill insert from Direct Energy Regulated Services (a Texas company) offering a chance to win $200 worth of free energy for signing up for their online paperless billing, and/or switching to auto-debit payments. I was planning to do the latter, anyway, so as not to have electric bills piling up while away from home.
So I go to Direct...'s website, and set up an account, and then attempted to set up the auto-debit. Their website is poorly designed, and kept returning errors when I typed in my bank account information. So....I called their help line. Get the usual canned BS, kept punching zero, and finally get connected to a nice lady who speaks with a bit of an accent that I couldn't place. I get her to walk me through the sign-up for auto pay, and she tells me which numbers to place in the blanks, and it still returns an error.
Finally, I ask her, "Just where in the world are you, ma'am?" "Guatemala City, but we have a call center in the Philippines, too." "Can you transfer me to someone in Canada? My hearing is none too good, and your accent makes it even harder for me." "We don't have any staff in Canada. Me: "Well, OK, then we are done here. Goodbye."
So, next step, I call ATCO power, which is the entity that actually owns and services the power lines and power plants, and the generators, too, IIRC. Got a human on the phone, and said, "I want to shitcan Direct Energy, and buy from you guys." "Well, this isn't the retail power vendor, but I will refer you to the Alberta Consumer Affairs Utilities Consumer Advocate service." So, I call that entity, and get a human on the line. Me: "I want to shitcan Direct Energy as my electric provider, and go with some other company. What can you recommend to me?" Him: "We cannot recommend specific companies, but I can refer you to our Web page which has a list of 30 companies selling retail electricity, and lists their prices and plans. I would suggest you look at a five-year fixed price plan, as we are going into a period of unstable electricity prices." Me: (twisting the knife a little) "Because we have an unstable government in Edmonton that is bound and determined to shut down reliable coal generation in favour of unsound "green" generation?" Him: "You could say that."
So, I spent an hour or so copying down information of the 30 companies listed. I clicked on the logo for each company, saw the offered plans, and priced out the 5-year fixed price plan (for seniors, since I am 29, you know). Decided that a company called BrighterFuture, based in Calgary, filled the bill. I called their number, and talked to a nice lady who walked me through applying for service through their website. I told her about my experience with Direct Energy, and she said, "I know. We hear that all the time." I asked if they used overseas call centers. "No, all our calls are taken here in Calgary." Me: "Ok, that sounds good, sign me up." "Do you want to pay extra for "green" energy?" Me: "No, never. Coal is fine, so is nuclear, if we had it. I'd even go for a reactor, buried in my own yard here, so it wouldn't irradiate the cows." She laughed. So, it is done. And my rate goes from 6.8 cents per kWh to 5.9 cents per kWh, which is almost a 15% reduction. Of course that reduction applies only to the power consumed, and not the fixed charges, but those should not change much.

Yeah, my neighborhood is pretty lame. On my way to bar, I noticed like half the houses had their lights off.
In my old neighborhood, it was a whole thing. The adults all hung out and drank adult beverages, the kids got full sized candy bars, decorations were everywhere.
It's weird out some neighborhoods go all out and others try to hide from the little moocher kids.
But yes -- that's a life hack -- hand out as much candy as possible as quickly as possible.

It couldn't be that they screwed up the shielding for the MRI machine and turned it on, destroying any nearby sensitive electronics. MRI machines that I have seen range from 3.5 T to 12 T magnetic fields. That's a huge field strength. There's a reason they ask an endless series of questions related to metals (including whether you have any tattoos). I can easily believe an unshielded varying 3.5 T magnetic field will induce currents that will destroy most electronics in the vicinity.

The article explained quite clearly why the helium venting destroyed Apple phones, and not Android phones. The Apple products use silicon "micromachines" for system clocks, and the helium atmosphere causes those devices to overspeed, and bad things happen. Android phones use quartz crystal for timebases.

Check the article. If it was just a shielding issue it would be affecting other electronics as well. But it was only iphones because of the chip that Apple uses for their clocks on the phone. Android and Apple both use it in their gyroscopes but only Apple is using it in their clock.

They claim that the helium interacted with the MEMS structures used for internal oscillators. That is possible since it affects the speed of sound in the volume surrounding the MEMS structure, but I would need to talk to a MEMS expert before I believed it. I would expect the oscillator to vary with atmospheric pressure and humidity if a low (low because no people passed out trying to breathe it) helium concentration had a significant effect. Helium might possibly increase MEMS resonant frequency and therefore the clock speed. If the clock speed got high enough, the CPU would generate enough heat to damage the circuit. However, every CPU design (including the ones Apple use) have thermal regulatory circuits that reduce the clock speed when the chip starts getting hot. From the outside you shouldn't see any effect unless clock speed gets too far out of the spec range. The only other failure mode I see is mechanical failure of the MEMS structure in a helium atmosphere. Might be possible, but I wouldn't bet on that.
Worse, where are the reports of everybody in the building having squeaky voices? They quote a 90000 litre leak. That's a little over 3000 cubic feet, not even enough to fill a 20 by 15 by 10 ft room, and every MRI room I've been in has been larger than that. That's not nearly enough helium to affect anything not in the same room.
This is a report in the MSM on a subject I know something about and where the details don't make sense. Do you really expect me to believe the report?

The secondary grounded side is not connected directly to the primary ground at all. It is isolated, and only grounded to earth at the service entrance or meter box. Other variations are possible.
But, indeed, as I was wondering, you do not want to tie the primary and secondary together directly.

MRI machines that I have seen range from 3.5 T to 12 T magnetic fields. That's a huge field strength. There's a reason they ask an endless series of questions related to metals (including whether you have any tattoos). The Apple stuff simply overclocked itself to death.
The other stuff used old fashioned quartz crystal clocks, which are unaffected by the surrounding atmosphere.
I bet if you put the Apple stuff in a bell jar vacuum it'd go on the fritz in the same way.

The phone died in 3 minutes. The concentration was high, and it diffused much faster.
They think enough was able to diffuse in over a 5 hour time period with the leaking MRI machine.

Interesting, some of the standards for SEWR systems. Again, the convergence zone around the electrode is the most problematic, and they want to limit it to voltage drop of no more than 20V/m across the drop.
This usually requires about 6m of ground rod driven, and the limit is an electrode resistance of no more than 5 to 10 ohms to ground ("to ground" is a term of art, someone complicated in definition, actually).
And no more than 10A of current should be sinked. More than that starts causing problem with adjacent wiring, like phone lines and such.

Quartz oscillators are in fact affected by atmospheric pressure, atmospheric density, temperature, humidity, and likely several other things that I don't remember. MEMS oscillators are significantly more sensitive to changes in at least atmospheric pressure and density.
If you put most CPUs in a vacuum they will not work very well. Almost every design assumes atmosphere is available to transport heat away from the circuit. Designing for a vacuum is seriously hard.
Increasing the clock speed increases heat within the CPU. Trying to transfer heat to a helium atmosphere decreases cooling, which also means a hotter CPU. When the CPU heats up, the device reduces the clock speed to reduce the heat. For damage to occur, the clock speed must be increased by more than range over which the circuit can reduce it. That's possible - I'm guessing a factor of 10 to 15 increase in oscillator speed moving from normal atmosphere (about 29 g per mole) to a pure helium atmosphere (2 g per mole). My desktop can only decrease the CPU clock by a factor of 4, so it's possible the CPU in the phone would start getting hot. I wouldn't expect permanent damage to the phone. I would expect dead people on the floor, since people can't survive more than a surprisingly short time in pure helium (loss of consciousness in seconds, death in minutes). I don't see reports of even unconscious people (I think this occurs between 10 and 20 percent helium), so I'm guessing the helium concentration was not high enough to cause the CPU clock to exceed the available feedback control range.

Put a person in the helium atmosphere inside that plastic bag. They will be unconscious in 15 seconds and dead in 2 to 3 minutes.
I'll believe this story when they start reporting all the dead bodies and the lawsuits against the idiots who made the helium connections without checking for leaks and without the sensors to detect a leak.
Also, if the leak was over a 5 hour period, the atmospheric concentration of helium was extremely low throughout the leak (helium is extremely difficult to contain even when you are trying - oddly enough it tends to go right through the walls and roof of a building) and there isn't enough helium to account for the observed effects.

I used to subscribe to Time decades ago. It used to tell a relatively unbiased view of current events. Movie reviews, sports, lifestyle stuff, trends.
It even reported on Global Cooling with some ideas from Edward Teller about how to put giant mirrors up in space and warm the planet up.
Then it grabbed onto the Global Warming fantasy and I've never been back.

When I see Time Magazine anywhere other than on a newsstand, I simply throw it away. No one misses it. If there is nowhere to throw it away I put under the stack of magazines or turn it face down. At my dentist's office I came back two months later and it was still there at the bottom, face down and dusty. Complete waste of paper. almost ten years ago I asked my parents why they still subscribed. They had no answer. I advised that as how it was so devoid of anything even remotely resembling "content" I estimated that only the staples in the fold kept it from floating away. They cancelled it soon thereafter.

Goldberg lost me pre-Trump. He's got a very narrow view of things, and is despite his denials, a pure ideologue in Kirk's sense.
That said, I can understand dislike of Trump's style. Hell, in many ways Trump reminds me of the kind of New Yorker I left to get away from. Of course, the same can be said of Goldberg.
But isn't a supposed "public intellectual" in politics supposed to see past that stuff, like to what the guy is actually doing? Does it never occur to that sort that they are just reading everything through a lens of personal taste?

Only had a couple myself. It's sad what trunk or treats have done to the holiday. I know it's all in the name of "safety" but to me, it just feels like an easy way for kids to go around and get lots of candy for minimal effort.

Remember - we are talking about doctors here, not scientists. As I used to say to jurors back in my med. mal. defense days: "Medicine is an art, NOT a science. Never forget that. Not here, not in your everyday lives."
Medicine uses science in its study, and scientific method in its use, but it is not an exact science, nor are most doctors scientists in any way, shape or form. This is a case in point.

It's worth remembering that when colleges referred to the "arts and sciences", medicine was one of the "arts". So was engineering.
The distinction was between "knowing that" and "knowing how".

That's about it. Sundays I go to a TLM. I feel
such joy that I go early to enjoy the silence in the sanctuary, broken
only by saying the Rosary. Compare with the variety show of an OF Mass.
