Uplifting ONT

Everything in tonight's ONT is either good news, heartwarming or funny. NO NEGATIVE CRAP!

I'll post all that shit tomorrow so you can be depressed all weekend.

Good news.jpg

Keeping it Clean

I think ALL high school students should have to take home ec. Not just laundry, but cooking, cleaning, sewing and shop too. Along with a lifeskills course that teaches them things like how to to balance a checkbook, change a tire and mow a lawn.

27 That gas station one....

As most of you do as well I'm sure, I'm asked for money all the time by people who need a bus ticket to see their dying grandmother. Or some shit.

One night I was at a gas station, this woman pulls up, she does the old "could you spare a few dollars for gas, I need to get to my dying grandmother's hospital bed?" routine. I was in a "what the fuck" mood and said OK, I'll fill up your tank, figuring it's a scam, but whatever.

This woman broke down, literally falling to her knees bawling, and thanking me. Then I looked in her car and looked like she was living in the car. She said with a full tank she can make it to see her son in the hospital before he goes.

I damn near started crying myself. OK fine, I did cry a little myself too. That video brought that emotion back. Damn you Twitters!!!!

43 Uplifting? I went to one of the last Halloween cruise nights tonight. Usually you put out a small bucket of candy for the kids, and the parents bring the kids, who are wearing their costumes. Between me and the guy next to me we gave out 10 frigging pounds of candy. 10 pounds! The costumes were cute, one kid was a ghost buster, had the pack, the whole deal. One little girl was dressed as a barbie doll in a box. Never saw that one before. No PC shit, so political costumes, just regular kids having fun. I got a kick out of some of the kids who saw the roadrunner badge/decal on the car and were waving at it. That damn decal made the kids more excited than the candy. The dude next to me asked how it felt driving a cartoon car. lol

I have a philosophy that you can get buy in most activities by knowing five basic forms of the activity.

Social dancing? Know five basic figures for five different dances and you'll be good to go.

Woodworking? Know know how to use five basic tools to make five different basic objects and you can make almost anything else.

Auto shop? Know five basic repairs and you'll cover most of what your car will need.

Cooking? Know five basic recipes, involving five different techniques among them all.

It's basically a version of the Pareto Principle.

Nah, you just make big meals and save the leftovers. Make a lasagna, freeze a half dozen squares after you eat. Make a stew, then can the leftovers. You get the fun of cooking a great meal, and when you don't feel like cooking there's always a nice selection of good food that just needs to be reheated.

Everything is gone now. Those shop classes were the best.

One thing you'll hear some complaints about that kids aren't taught basic finance and balancing checkbooks and personal responsibility. How about the ability to figure simple interest? I've read some parents have pushed for these classes in schools and experienced some pushback even. The conspiracy minded types argue that local businesses want un-educated types - it's easier to sell cars to people who don't understand economics. I'm not necessarily persuaded, but it is true that people who understand money and credit don't get into as much trouble.

One should not have to use a calculator to take such tests. If math skills are important, then the test-takers should be able to do the math, mentally, or on paper, the old-fashioned way. If the math is incidental to the question being asked, then structure the test questions so that they test for knowledge, not key-punching acumen.

201 Chicken & Rice is about the easiest recipe I know. I use Cream of Mushroom and/or Cream of Celery condensed soups, maybe a little onion, and yes definitely - Kikkoman Soy sauce. A little butter, maybe a bay leaf... Garlic. Fresh garlic is so much better than powdered in this dish. Ginger is always good.. a little Cayenne. Frozen peas, if I remember to buy some, which I never do.

I bake it in the oven. I used to let chicken breasts thaw slightly, and cut them into chunks. Then I discovered this is not necessary! Why wasn't I informed of this? Just slap them breasts in, and chunk them when it's fully cooked and tender.
Since I'm pretty much a cro-magnon I gnaw on this for dinner, breakfast and maybe lunch the the next day.

Surprisingly, yes, although I knew enough by that time not to need any help. With both my late sister when younger, and my daughter several years ago, I got calls when they had flats.

I got there and in the case of my sister, began just telling her what to do. She pissed and moaned that I didn't just do it for her, but she learned how for life that day.

In my daughter's case, when I pulled up and walked up to the car, she said "you're just going to tell me how and watch me, aren't you?" Smart kid.

No, it's not. The problem may have been of your own making, but the gift was still a kind one that you should appreciate. Here's what you do: consider this a chance to make a change for the better. Use the money for your trip, but sit down beforehand and figure out a way to set aside that same amount for a donation to the church in a few months to help another needy family.

Well, I would say regular gibson PAF spacing, but gibson does actually have a bridge spaced configuration on the hotter ones like the 500T. Sooo, not really sure what he makes, so I'm guessing if he makes a PAF type its probably going to be PAF spaced. I do like anything PAF on the hotter side. Better question, what spacing DOES he actually make?

Last time someone asked me that I was in a good mood.
Me: "Sure. Which pump?"
Woman: "Oh, my car's not here."
Me: "Your car isn't here? Where is it?"
Woman: "It's at the other gas station."
Narrator: "The other gas station is 3/4 miles away. It is night. The street has no streetlights or sidewalks."
Me: "You need to work on your script."

260 I don't know how to contact OregonMuse so I'll post this in this open thread:

Here's a fun image for the Ace of Spades book thread. This is a bookshop in a fantasy comic. The protagonist has picked up a trashy novel and is amused by how silly it is. The author's comments are fun: the gargoyles aren't just for show, they chase down thieves... the eyes over the door are magic eyes that actually watch people... the store provides those floating candles because it forbids any fire or exothermic magic...

http://www.daughterofthelilies.com/dotl/806

BTW I'm pretty sure that any Morons who like web comics would like this one. It's called Daughter of the Lilies, and the woman who writes and draws it is a Christian who said she wanted to make something like the Narnia books, an uplifting and somewhat religious work that isn't preachy or boring. The comic features a world of magic and fantastic creatures... but it is apparently our world in the future, after some catastrophe. The main character is a woman who never reveals her face, and it's a big mystery as to who she really is and why she never shows her face. She's a "mage" (can use magic) whose best skills involve making plants grow. If you read all the way through, she does eventually reveal her face to us readers, but I don't want to spoil the surprise so I won't say more than that.

Posted by: Ace's liver at October 25, 2018 10:44 PM

It's not an instinctual thing. And we don't get as many flats as they did in the time of _A Christmas Story_.

Park on as level surface as possible
Chock the tires.
Find jack in trunk.
Figure out how to remove it from trunk
Find spare. In trunk or underneath car.
Figure out how to remove it.
Find worthless lug wrench. (no tire iron)
Break tension on lug nuts. Hopefully they aren't torqued on too much.
Find jack points on car. If not you might just puncture the sheet metal.
Work scissors jack. Make sure its lifting straight.
Finish removing lug nuts.
Remove tire without tipping jack.
Place spare correctly.
(reverse order)

Most of the difficulty is the default lug wrench isn't a cross lug wrench so you can't generate any torque.
The other difficulty is finding the correct jack points.

291 53 -- Colorado Alex -- I've been bitching about that for years. There were us idiots who had spent four years learning all kinds of useless suit so we could pass the SAT and waste another four years learning more useless shit. Then there were the kids in my class who had spent four years in shop or office, and were able to walk into any manufacturer or office the day after graduation fully prepared to start work immediately.

I blame The Greatest Generation. They struggled through the Great Depression and WW II, and swore their kids would get it all. The worst thing they brought with them from WW II was the idea that no kid of theirs would ever work with their hands or backs. College for everyone! Never mind if the kid didn't want to go -- he was going!

My high school was typical of the breed. The school board bragged endlessly about what percentage of kids they sent on to college. They never admitted how many of us dropped out and were forced to take crap jobs because we didn't know how to do anything.

305 The wheel lug nuts, particularly if they have been worked on by one of the shops, will have been reefed down to several yard-tons of torque, and a teenager, particularly someone unfamiliar with the task may not be able to break them loose.

The one thing I've noticed is the sheer obliviousness people have sometimes to how their problem will inconvenience others. If your car breaks down in the turn lane at an intersection, your first priority is to get that POS out of the road. People just break down and sit there.

310 Colorado Alex -- I've been bitching about that for years.

Trades come with their own risks, which to many WWII generation and boomers would have seemed a lot more real than the risks from a college career path.

Plus, the people on the school boards are likely college educated professionals, so there's probably some bias as well against the trades. If you have to choose between shop class, that your son won't take, or paying for IB classes that could help your son get into a better college, which would you choose as a school board member?

Oh well. Probably never happen. If they did, I'd suggest storing it in the glove box.

It had all kinds of cool and exotic teas, spices, canned foods, baked goods, etc. We got a pint of green tea flavored ice cream and a couple of plastic spoons and ate it in the car before going to get our shots. Okay. One quick funny story before I go, speaking of things getting stuck via galvanic action. I was seeing a kid in clinic that I have known since he was about five, chronic heat condition. He is now 18. I hadn't seen him for about a year so we were reviewing his interim medical history. I asked if he'd been to the ER for anything during the interim and he sort of glanced at his mom. She said, "Do you want to tell him or should I?"

He said, "I'll tell him. Well doc, I've got this girlfriend and we were getting a little what you might call sexual activity going on and...well...I'm not circumcised, and my foreskin got stuck back around the...you know... the other part."

I said, "Stop right there, I get the picture. Way too much ibformation."

Well. If the doors look like they could swap from one car to the other, chances are the parts inside the door might swap, too. Or the basic actuator device might be the same, but the linkage rod from it to the door latch might be different.

Find a friendly auto wrecker, and ask them to look up the parts in their Hollander Guide. Hollander is a publishing company that compiles books of parts interchange information. Now on line, too. 384 376 Our new-to-us 2001 Lexus RX300 needs some door lock actuators replaced. It's a long shot, but since Toyota makes Lexus, I wondered if we could scavenge actuators from the 1996 Toyota Avalon that has been retired. The problem is I've been unable to find anything on the internet about whether they would be compatible.

Do any of the car geniuses here tonight know anything about this?
Posted by: Emmie at October 25, 2018 11:47 PM (4HMW

Well. If the doors look like they could swap from one car to the other, chances are the parts inside the door might swap, too. Or the basic actuator device might be the same, but the linkage rod from it to the door latch might be different.

389 Emmie. Look at eBay for your 2001 Lexus actuators.

I think the jump from 96 to 01 is an entire platform change in the cars, so I wouldn't expect much of any interchangabity there.

Search term on ebay.

"2001 Lexus RX-300 door lock actuators"

Bet you'll find some bargains there. Caution though. Buy only OEM, not cheap Chinese knock offs.

404 310 -- Colorado Alex -- Yeah, a lot of the anti-gay blue collar attitude came from pure snobism. I grew up in Camden County, NJ. My high school years were spent in a "development" that was basically a bedroom for Philadelphia. A lot of the fathers were the first members of their families to actually finish high school. Then they all went off to WW II or Korea, then took advantage of the G. I. Bill, entering the white collar work world. No more blue collar slavery for them!

Many of my neighbors were fresh from the city and suburbia was heaven to them. They loved mowing their very own yards with lawnmowers with engines. And they had patios in the back! And charcoal grills! And they didn't share walls with anyone so they didn't have to listen to the neighbors fighting or playing their tvs too loud.

One night, my father heard a strange noise in the back yard and went out to investgate. It was the guy from next door, holding a big clod of dirt in one hand and a flashlight in the other. " There's a rat in your back yard!" the guy hollered. "I'm just gonna throw this dirt at him and scare him away!" My poor father nearly stroked out on the spot. It wasn't a rat, it was a skunk, and it was right under our open dining room window. Having spent his whole life in the city, the guy only understood rats. If it was big and furry, it had to be a rat.

Heh. Back in the 1950's, early '60's, there was a terror campaign by a cult called the Sons of Freedom Doukhobors in southern British Columbia. They blew up railway bridges, roads, and school buses. Blew up a school bus parked outside the home of my late uncle Leo. Their bombs were time bombs, using a cheap dollar pocket watch as the timer. They would remove the minute hand, polish the hour hand to bright metal, and place a screw in the plastic watch crystal, which the hour hand would hit upon its advance. That gave them up to a 12 hour delay. Then the clever bastards found they could add mass to the balance wheel in the watch, and slow it down to near half-speed, and get close to 20 hours delay.

416 AOP. The PATS on the F-150 can certainly be killed via a dealer-grade OBD-II two-way diagnostic/command tool.

Same device lets you punch in a non-standard tire size, and the truck's computer will adjust the speedometer, accordingly.

IIRC, if you have a full owner's manual, there was a complex dance that could be played on the Odometer Reset and some other dash-buttons to also override the PATS, but that's long forgotten in my cranial files.

No, it's automatic, and that is faulty. No direct drive happening. Might be the direct drive clutch, might be a shfit solenoid, too. That was my first thought when someone said there was a clock.

In the 1940s German saboteurs used dried peas in a tube of water. Over time the peas would soak up the water and expand, eventually pushing the metal contact at the top of the tube against the housing. Probably work with rice, too.

Not something you'd sent through the mail, though.

He was a farmer. It turns out he worked the farm since he was a kid, kept up till he was 42, till last Mon.

Dad was retiring this yr and older brother came home after 2 DUIs and losing his job. So Dad says the farm goes to the oldest, despite the other working there for yrs.

Well Mike had depression issues and was being treated for them, doing fine it seemed. He kept talking to his Dad about the situation.

After harvest on Mon. he texted his wife he loved her and their son. She found him later in the work shed hanging and dead.

Back in the 1950's, early '60's, there was a terror campaign by a cult called the Sons of Freedom Doukhobors in southern British Columbia.

But the transition for this pre-industrial, rural, Russian Christian sect was not easy; their concepts of pacifism, animal rights and anti-materialism split the Doukhobor community into three factions. The most active of these was the 'Sons of Freedom', whose millennial zeal manifested itself in now-legendary nude marches and acts of violence that ran counter to their fundamental tenet of non-violence

446 OK, Weird Dave!

You want happy talk? Here's some damn happy talk, then... from that famously cheery ole GOP cheerleader... MSNBC!

So, listen up, then. OK?

NOW HEAR THIS! But first, remember that 2016 was a PRESIDENTIAL election year, not a gd MIDTERM, & Trump kicked adz in 2016, recall? (It was in all the newspapers)

So... stay with me now:

"Two weeks before the [midterm] election, the current nationwide total of early and absentee ballots received is 8,157,000, which exceeds the 2016 total by over 200,000... the estimated GOP percentage of the early vote is 44% & the Democratic percentage is 40%... a change compared to 2016 when Democrats were outpacing Republicans."

447 If we only replace one actuator/solenoid, it would probably be front passenger. Front driver is easy enough to lock/unlock by the driver.
Posted by: Emmie at October 26, 2018 12:38 AM (4HMW

If none of the actuators work, it may be a power source issue for the door lock system, unless the actuators failed one by one. Modern lock actuators are often not simple solenoids, but rather tiny electric motors with a gear train, that drives a toothed rack to create the linear motion. They are surprisingly robust, too.

Part of the Cease Fire will include a gun buyback program to help stop the violence in Indy.

Indy's Cease Fire Weekend is November 2-4 at the MLK Center located at 40 W. 40th Street, at North Illinois Street on the near northwest side. The event will include wraparound services for people wanting counseling, a free smoke detector and help with employment services as part of a job fair.

"Life does Life Things......The only way way through it, is to LIVE."

Given the number of folks I interact with, "Life doing it's thing" rears its head on a regular basis......

Those folks that accept that Life Happens and then eventually continue to Live......seem to adjust the Best.

Accepting that Living has pain.......just as it has joy can be tough to reconcile until experienced......

I reckon wisdom is made up of that in part.

Are private gun transfers legal in Indiana?

If they are, you and some of your friends should advertise that you'll buy any gun in usable condition for above the price that the buy back is offering with no questions asked. Perhaps you could set up a tent or something about a block away from the event. I guarantee you'll end up saving quite a few pieces of history from the scrap heap.

sounds like it might be a limit switch failure, allowing the motor to be powered up until it burns out. You might be better off swapping in the actuators from the old Toyota if you are willing to do the necessary modifications to make them work (if they can work at all). There might be some fundamental design difference that makes the wiring incompatible, such as 3-wire vs 2-wire, etc.

This is where a Lexus enthusiast bulletin board could be useful. If it's a common problem, some smart person has already done that homework, and can tell you which Brand X actuator to buy, and what mods need to be done to make it work in the Lexus doors.

481 Hello Horde.

Yes, this is me in the prayer chain.

I am writing to ask for your help. To be clear, I asked for and received help once already, in early July. I wanted all to know that. Circumstances are such that I find myself needing ask another time.

10/23-Calm Mentor is battling an infection that came from an abscessed tooth and could use all the help he could get. He is going through a very difficult time right now. He has a new GoFundMe page:

https://www.gofundme.com/help-with-time-to-find-employment

The campaign tells the story, but this is my situation:

I am partially handicapped, with limited mobility and only 25% use of my strong right arm. Up until June, I was still able to drive for Uber, and did so for over a year. I was deactivated as a driver at that time.

My only family is a brother who I was helping financially while working. My "friends", I found, consisted of those from a marriage of 17 years which ended three years ago. I have been turned down for welfare benefits because, as reported, I made too much money this year to qualify. I applied for SSDI in July, and am awaiting their first denial, ascc I'm told this is their standard practice.

While working, I had built up a small reserve of money, one that was used up recently to pay an oral surgeon to treat a badly abscessed tooth.

I have been everywhere in applying for jobs, and in the past 3.5 months have only gotten 3 days of good freelance work, and 5 days of temp work. I will find something, as failure is not an option. In the meantime, I am looking at homelessness next week. This is the reason for my request. Anything you could do would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for listening, and I have put my email in my nic if anyone would like to contact me off of the board. I will post this once only per thread for today and tomorrow. Be well.

483 Good Happy news. Old New Girlfriend keeps getting better and better. She looks at me the same way and does all the little things I remember when we were 13, 14, and 15 years old. We make out constantly like teenagers. I've never made another woman or person this happy and excited since she wa my first Girlfriend 25 years ago. We are that couple that looks alike, act alike, are alike glow, and makes others (who are not killjoys) happy. I dont believe in one true loves, but I do believe in the science of pair bonding, chemistry, and bio chemistry.

I was not expecting this in a million years and neither was she.

Exit question: is it normal for late 30 year old's to make out for 4-6 hours straight while staring into each other's eyes and laughing flirting the entire time? It's like we are teenagers. It's crazy.

But there might be the odd really collectible old piece that the dumb fuck holding it doesn't know its value. And you could offset some of your expenses by selling the real crap guns to the legit buyback.

And you'd be getting them off "the streets" which is the goal of the buyback, after all.

I think the intent is to stop the bullying. It follows the formula - the best way to stop a bully is to punch him in the nose.

I could imagine some dude getting real pissed off one night and throwing this together overnight or next couple days... but I'm not sure this could've been pulled off that quickly. People have said that getting a courier to deliver, at least for the CNN address, takes some coordination.

Yesterday was my mom's 82nd birthday. Her health is definitely in decline. Last Sunday, a close cousin of mine called me to set up him driving 400 miles one way to deliver a cake to my mom; I'm like "Okay, if that is what you want to do".

It was a huge success. Mom couldn't remember about anyone making that big of a deal about her BD in over 30 years. She is still stunned. We went to the casino for a bit, had some cake, then he headed back to Houston.

When she flags a bit about about all the Dr appointments, the new disabilities, the weight losses...

Friends and family are right there to cheer her on. I like to think of myself as head cheerleader.

It was a good day.

515 I think ALL high school students should have to take home ec. Not just laundry, but cooking, cleaning, sewing and shop too. Along with a lifeskills course that teaches them things like how to to balance a checkbook, change a tire and mow a lawn.

I suppose so, but....

Shouldn't those things really be taught by parents? Looks to me like one more area our society is falling down, and there's a limit to how much we can expect schools to pick up the slack.

Further, consider what schools, as they are today, would make of it. Boys would be made to sew dresses, and wear them. Wood shop would be stalled completely by students who say their projects identify as made of metal, or stone, or some organic soy shit.

However I had a strange thing happen to me last time there. I used to drink a fosters oil can before each race to kind of get things going. I am walking around drinking a fosters and big black state trooper tells me to throw away my beer. I look around and most everyone has a beer in hand but I decide I do not need an ass whipping that day. Throw beer in trash and trooper stomps off like he is mad I did not give him excuse.

@549

That is indeed the question isn't it? It's tough to answer, because...things are so great when we are together and I'm so happy, and I'm certain that's not sustainable in a close-distance relationship. That euphoria just isn't sustainable long term. So...if we were together in close proximity for an extended period of time...that's the test, I guess.

I hope so.

But being that from what is known so far I believe a person of interest should have been developed by now I'm not hopeful.

Take the 1st fake bomb at CNN allegedly dropped off by a courier.

As I have said yesterday, I know how deliveries and packages get in and out of CNN so if it was dropped off by a courier the courier would be logged, the package would be logged and the courier would have been captured on CCTV.

All of the pictures of the fake bomb packages do not have canceled or stamped so they were not "sent" in the mail form Florida.

And the use of "sent" by the FBI is too cute by half.

Most of the packages were "found" at sorting facilities which means they were dropped in a drop/mail box and brought to the sorting facility and "discovered"

It's all bullshit and I don't trust LE specifically the FIB to tell the truth and do an honest and real investigation.

---

The NYPD has video of the courier who dropped the package off at cnn. And they most likely have already questioned him on who gave him the package to deliver.

The uncancelled stamps are an issue. To me that means they never went over the counter at the Post Office and were somehow dumped into the mail stream without anyone noticing. From the pictures that I have seen those packages would not fit in any of the free standing mail boxes I use so they got to the sorting facility some other way.

That shows a sophistication that is way out of proportion to the cartoonish "bombs" themselves.
