Because he's smart. It's MUCH better to have too small a venue, and have people fighting to get in, than the converse. A crowded venue generates electricity and enthusiasm that is totally lost if the venue isn't easily filled. Attendees think that they were lucky to get in, which puts in a good mood. Conversely, attendees rattling around in a venue have the impression that they're chumps, that this is a loser, and everybody but them realized that.

Maybe even a federal holiday (for presidentials). Much of Yurup and Latin America do it on Sundays.
But no early voting. No regular "voting by mail" in-person voting, except for absentees for then normal reasons.
Paper ballots (good modern systems can count votes with this sort of ballot very very quickly.
And voter ID, for all the obvious reasons.

I knelt down by the foundation of my home by some bushes opening up a hatch for the water turn off. I only was there for a few minutes.
I got back in and was running my hand through my hair and ran into a tick. Luckily it was somewhere I could get at it and pulled it out before he got a good bite going.
They are deadly quick.

Jay Leno's wife was/is a moonbattish-ish kind of gal, human rights or women's rights-focused, I think, so back when Dubya was knocking off the Taliban regime in A'stan, as I recall she would not join in the usual slanders against him.
Good late-night comedy was a staple, or at least a routine pleasure, a lot of my life. Leno was the last one who was watchable. He really continued the tradition.

Same thing for a pager. Figured it would be like being on a leash.
I only got a cell phone in case I had a flat tire or some emergency.
Now, my iPhone is my freaking life support.

I recently voted in an election that was tied. Tied! And the recount was tied. This was after re-counting early votes or otherwise. Even single votes matter. The runoff was even separated by only a handful.

As Grump confirmed, counting of paper ballots can be very quick. Scanned (fill in the oval) more popular now after FL 2000 than punch-card style, but that's silly actually.
It was an early, but jaw-dropping, revelation to me when several people I knew, who weren't dummies, didn't understand how the FL "recount" was an abomination, in principle, not just in practice. And these people understood statistics. If the counting machines are functioning properly - *the totals they provide are accurate*. Period.
Several states, like FL, have/had particularly stupid election laws. The systems they pay good money for are disregarded, to add the illogical and invalid but emotionally satisfying "recount" concept. Money wasted on systems that don't require recounts, opportunities for corruption opened up, etc.
(Dubya's winning margin in FL 2000 was ..... drum roll .... almost exactly that reported on election night, as confirmed by 3 independent audit "recounts" done by newspapers in subsequent years. Surprise!)

I recently voted in an election that was tied. Tied! And the recount was tied. This was after re-counting early votes or otherwise. Even single votes matter. The runoff was even separated by only a handful.

Did this last time - got 4 blank stares of incomprehension back at me, followed by dismay and befuddlement when I explained.
Then let them know this system would probably not be recognized as valid by observers from the US, UN, or EU when helping facilitate elections in new democracies or post-civil war countries.

I'd say about 30% of the time, I still get ice. One time (at Chick-Fil-A!!) I asked for no ice and they gave me DOUBLE ice, so that I also got only about two drops of sweet tea.

I have to do this with a Dunkin near my house. The barrista seems to think that everyone takes creme in their coffee, which I hate. Even saying "No creme anywhere near it!" was not enough. I had to not even mention creme and say "black" about 4 times per order before he got it.

To be fair though, I'm nervous about leafy vegetables at restaurants. Something about sanitation, cultures that are weak on it, yada yada. As I understand it, there's a vast underreporting of food poisoning attributable to contaminated food that most people don't realize. I hate preparing food, but at least I know something about its origins and handling if I do it.
