Vice: Generation Z is Skipping College and Going Into the Trades to Make Fat Money with No Debt

What cannot go on, will not.

As the Brookings Institution noted in 2017, participation in career and technical education (CTE) has declined for several decades. That was in part because of a lack of funding and the fact that many states implemented more stringent academic requirements. However, the growing belief that everyone should obtain a college education also surely played a part. The National Center for Education Studies found that the number of CTE credits earned by American high school students declined by 14 percent between 1990 and 2009.

But the jobs are still there. NPR reported in April that the pressure to attend a four-year college remained so strong in American society that many high-paying jobs in the trades were currently sitting empty. Melissa Burg, the principal of Queens Tech, insisted that New York City's Department of Education and some savvy parents had taken note of this dynamic, increasingly regarding a bachelor's degree as the new high school diploma.

"I think those [trade] jobs go unfilled because skilled labor is looked down upon, even though those skilled labor people make more money than I do," she explained. "I don’t know if people don’t want to work as physically hard as they used to, or if they see their families who’ve worked hard physically, or if those families are saying, 'Don’t do what I did.'"

The article actually doesn't have much evidence that this is the hot new trend, though, despite promising that in the title.

29 A college education with Federal student loans is 10 years of indentured servitude, working to pay off an extortionate debt load, for something that may not meaningfully improve your job prospects.

If you're not going into a STEM career, skip college and go into trades.

Eventually the corporate world will remember that you don't need a 4 year degree to push paper, and that good management is a social skill, not something taught in a classroom.

38 Skilled labor is looked down on by many people, but shouldn't be. I always point this out in discussions on this topic: my brother-in-law with the master plumber's license always out-earned me (lawyer), did so without the debt, and did not have to work any harder. I don't regret my choice; it was right for me. But people can make a good living doing work we all depend on without the college rigmarole.

39 I hope this trend continues.

My BIL runs a company that installs and repairs restaurant equipment. His company offers a starting salary (with no experience necessary) of $18.00 an hour (with OJT and plenty of overtime), pays for all of the necessary training and certifications, give you a take home vehicle, and still can't find interested young applicants to fill his vacancies.

A good friend run a construction company, and can't find good employees. He said the young people he hires can't stay focused. They are too busy on their phones.

91 The Moron Horde needs to found "No Bullshit University and Trade Schools, LLLC." Hire guys like Dennis Prager and Mike Rowe. Teach STEM courses, and the traditional Humanities, traditionally taught. Plus also have trades programs. No grievance studies, nothing called "studies", no psychology, no journalism, no sociology, no anthropology, no other bullshit courses. Have some crossover available, so trades students can snag some art or literature for credit, and for interest, and so Humanities or STEM students can pick up some basic trade knowledge.

Start it fairly small in some flyover State, and if it becomes successful, franchise it out. Needless to say, no "safe spaces", and students who try to act as SJW's get expelled, and their tuition not refunded.

98 I know there are shared generationial experiences. But the media always wants to recreate the Greatest Gen and the Boomers.

Those two generations were bound together by major, major experiences that effected everyone at the same time. Great Depression, WW2, the 60's, Vietnam, JFK etc.

The generations now are around at the same time, but there are not nearly as many universal events that shape generations any more. Maybe thats a good thing, maybe not. I just dont think you can lump everyone together like that given current trends.

And two terms being likely, it's an eight year stretch with time for the transition being ten years.

166 When you say that skilled tradesman can be replaced by 3rd world labor you have to realize that the Baby Boomer generation were their own worst competitors when too many baby boomers were competing for too few jobs in the labor market.

Now, after what, forty years of Planned Parenthood, we have a shortage of labor and suddenly the skilled craftsman can make money again.

Then you realize that high taxes and heavy government regulation are the other side of the equation when it comes to jobs. Without a booming economy, without an economy unencumbered by taxes and regulations, there are no jobs for anyone.

Then you realize what Trump has done for the country, and what his policies are doing to the democrats who gave us stagflation, high unemployment, and burger flipping minimum wage jobs.

A couple of years ago, an electrical company (electricians) had a program for HS graduates. First year apprentice year, 30k guaranteed salary.

2d year salary guaranteed 60k.

So, even assuming that years 3 and 4 do not have any increase in pay, you are 210k to the good for 4 years, and you did NOT pay $100-300k in tuition.

That is a quarter to half million dollar swing over 4 years.

I work in a creative trade (went to college for something else entirely).

One of the guys I used to follow (can't remember who) gave a lot of good advice to younger guys in this business.

He gave one piece of advice I chose not to follow, but probably works: pretend to be gay.

Many women will automatically defer to a gay designer on about any idea, because women think gays are very stylish.

Most men will as well - because even if they think your idea is dumb as hell, they don't want to seem gayer than the designer.

183 This all dates back to the depression. When a college degree of any type would guarantee a job while being a tradesman simply did not. Mostly because degrees were rare, and tradesmen were common, and oh-by-the-way a depression was on. In the generations that followed, those that lived through and survived the era pushed their kids to get degrees because of their idea that it "guarantees a job" even in a bad economy.

In 80 years with persistent pressure from grandmas and grandpas who suffered, and therefore flooded the markets with their kids and their kids' kids, with easy to get degrees, the economics has changed. Merely having a degree no longer makes you "special". With the number of humanities degrees handed out by colleges there is simply no shortage of degree holders. The Economy itself has only so much use for humanities majors as such, and that market is flooded with supply. Mostly that degree only means "was able to get a degree of some sort" to a potential employer.

Ask those women's studies majors today if having a degree guarantees a job. It certainly does not (Having a degree that says "I will be a constant, persistent, painful, puss filled boil on HR's butt" doesn't help) to which an invisible hand might quietly opine, "maybe you should have learned how to do something useful".

It becomes less dangerous every year. Drilling contractors have learned that injuries and deaths cost money, so safety is now heavily stressed. Often to the point of slowing down the work flow. I am "supposed to" don a harness and fall arrest gear to go on the roof of my shack to place a cellphone antenna.

And many modern rigs have done away with manually doing drill pipe connections and the use of spinning chains, which claimed many a finger. Some rigs now have automated pipe handling, and the driller makes the splice by working a joystick on the driller's console in the doghouse, just like a vidya game.

NO.
End federal loans period. End all federal involvement in education.

If we really do need people in STEM fields, if that education is truly cost-effective, the market will respond with incentives. Banks and STEM corporations will gladly lend the money--- and schools will co-sign the loans.

The very idea of the Almighty State deciding what "we" need is an abomination. And any government help ends up being a subsidy.

Same here, though mine was a bookkeeper. He kept saying, "You'll have that college degree to fall back on." Maybe if I'd lived in a climate where you didn't sweat for 10 months a year just walking outside to get the mail, I'd have been more open to physical work.

Computer programming was a new-ish thing then. If I could have gone to a school specifically for that (or even studied it in college), I'd have been doing extremely well for quite a few years.

Yeah the problem a lot of people here have with college today is with what its become, not what it was and is meant to be. Philosophy, Art, Literature, History, etc are all not only valid but critical areas of study for higher learning, but they have all been so grotesquely bastardized and ruined by the far radical extremist left that they're the monstrosity we have today.

Reel it back a century or so and you have something worth teaching again.

Nah. Toothbrush salesman.

When I was a little tyke, my dad told me a story about a salesman with a hare lip.

Naturally, his voice made it hard for him to get a job, and after being rejected by everyone in town, he begged his cousin who managed it. After a lot of "please, please, just give me a chance", he relented. "If you can sell this box in one week, you have a job."

The newly minted salesman came back at the end of the day for another, with receipts for all of the sales. The cousin couldn't believe it, but hired him on, and so began a meteoric rise, breaking record after record.

Years later, as a VP of sales, the company manager asked him to share his secrets with the new hires.

"So you go to the grocery store, and set up your table. Over here you have your chips, here's your lip, and the toothbrushes stay in the box at the end. First they take a chip, then they try some dip, then they go "This dip tastes like shit". That's when you go "It is shit! Would you like to buy a toothbrush?"

Sometimes you can get a good job. And sometimes, well...

My managers and supervisors always seem to like me. The corporates who run the IT Solutions companies that I always end up working contract jobs for are apparently oblivious to this little piece of information. On my last job, a different company took over the contract I was working. They extended offers to a bunch of my co-workers with huge raises, but not me (despite promising that everyone would be brought over). My out-going supervisor thought I was so useful to the contract that he went out of his way to get me signed on with the new company through an alternate route. I managed to transition over as a result. I was making about twenty percent less than the other veterans, but it was still a nice raise over my old pay rate (which says a lot about how little I was making earlier, and how ridiculously huge the raises were for the others). And then about a month and a half into the new employer, after they *seriously* screwed up some stuff...
Guess who got the layoff notice?

>So you figure college is just a really expensive, big trade school for technical degrees, then? Got it.

Wow somebody flunked out of or didn't take their economics elective. And has ideas about education that are about 100 years outdated. Lemme fill you in, you only loan money on something that the expected *objective* value will cover the risk of the loan.

That be said I think ending loans for humanities degrees is wrong, but the interest rate for different majors should be market driven and reflect the increased risk of non-payment.

Finally if actual higher education and not a degree is a goal there are ***FAR*** cheaper ways to achieve that end, thanks to the advances in communication made over the last century. This isn't the 1100's there are more places to study than actually being physically present at a University.

For the record, most folks going into BA in humanities aren't in it for the "education". They are in it for the degree. The school only represents a means to the end of "having a degree in something".

If you take the annuity and immediately invest your winnings in something safe that gives you a modest return, then yes.

The problem is that lottery winners are usually not the sort of people who are good with money. So instead they spend all of their money and find themselves broke a few years later.

The same thing happens to musicians and athletes.

I went to college because I had no choice. Upper middle class Jewish parents were an MD and an RN. They'd have been mortified if I did anything else. I got a degree in Psychology and Theology. I haven't had a single job even remotely related to either field. I'm an accountant now - guess how many accounting credits I had in college?

I don't regret college because I was fortunate enough to not need student loans and most of my current friends are people I met in college. But it sure feels like a waste of time.

378 Give 100 inner-city residents $10,000 apiece and 5 will use it to repair their lives and 95 will spend it in a week on bling and 40 ouncers.

Sure, or trailer park, or redneck living in Tennessee, etc. The mindset is the same: unfamiliarity with how to manage money (because they never had any) and a "I get everything I want now" attitude.

Getting lots of stuff without earning it almost never works out well. We all know this, from watching (or being, or raising) kids grow up being given everything. Some very few turn out okay, most are worthless.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 19, 2018 02:35 PM (39g3+)

379 It's definitely a trend, but the supply might not come from where pollyana wants it. Kids born in the USA, raised in the USA, and brainwashed via the USA Education system may, indeed, be snowflakes. Kids raised south of the border, OTOH, most definitely are not.

Like the Italians and the Poles and the Irish and the Czech, etc., who came before them - these people will trade their sweat for a living wage. Put $85,000 in front of them, and they'll find a way to endure working outside in the cold rain or snow.

You've seen the pictures of those guys having lunch on the high steel, back in the 1920's? Who do you think those were, the Lowells and Cabots?

American kids have an opportunity, of this there can be no doubt. Will they take it? Of this there can be some doubt.

Where there is a demand for skilled labor that can be learned without a lot of money, but with a lot of sweat? That situation ALWAYS works out, as long as the labor is allowed to flow. Bring the workers in legally. Screen for the best and the brightest.

It'll work out just fine.

I agree with you. Take the lump sum for sure. You can invest the bulk of it, keep some aside for mad money, and generate your own annuity. How good will the lotto corp annuity be if the State goes broke, hmmm? In that scenario, the annuity winners will be deemed to be "fat cats" who "already got theirs".

All that aside, for a very young person with no financial experience or discipline, the annuity might make sense, but if the odometer has ticked off 29 more than once, the lump sum could be better, actuarily speaking.

It's really tough to get started if you don't have degree/GD cert., but once you've got some documented experience under your belt, it's ok.

The main thing that being rich does for you is that it gives you options. You have the means to make radical changes in your life if you decide that it'll make you happy.

The stress point in being poor is the feeling that you don't have a way out, that your life path is preordained.

407 I never understand why going to college is so frowned upon here and other right leaning blogs. All available data says college pays off in the long run even with debt paydowns.

I don't think people here are necessarily down on college; they're just not down on trades and see some comparative advantages.

Longterm data is not very useful here, because longterm data necessarily is about the past, and the past is not proof of the future. To take an example, after the GWB-era crash, the legal profession has never truly recovered and there's no reason to think that longterm earnings of those who got their law degrees since then will be like the earnings of prior generations.

There are lots of signs that college has problems that were not present in the past (proliferation of worthless degrees, general lowering of college standards, the meteoric rise in the expense of college).

they are much more susceptible to economic swings, you may need to go though an official apprenticeship which is hard to get, you likely have to join a union, and nearly all are hourly.

That's what its supposed to be, but society, educators, and pop culture have succeeded in convincing generations that college is a really expensive trade school.

A liberal arts education is meant to be about teaching young minds to structure their thoughts, understand why and how we got where we are, what it means, and give them the tools to think and come up with new solutions for themselves. Its not about getting a job.

For the record, most folks going into BA in humanities aren't in it
for the "education". They are in it for the degree. The school only
represents a means to the end of "having a degree in something".
=====

I was astonished at my youngest who talked about BA humanities people (last week in fact regarding a cousin) as aspiring to their 'MRS' degrees. I didn't hear that back in the 70s and only read about it -- that 'ladies' went to college to hunt and land the wealthier guys. Good grief.

Not that I think you'll disagree, but:

(1) most universities aren't much interested in providing a traditional liberal arts education of the sort you describe anymore;

(2) if the cost of attending four years is in the $200k range, as it is at many, you either need to be rich or it needs to provide you with meaningful job opportunities.

Well, clearly, they've abandoned every pretense of teaching young minds the tools to think for themselves and simply are teaching them what to think. The last thing they want is a liberal arts education. No establishment will ever willingly teach you what you need to know to overthrow it.

(2) if the cost of attending four years is in the $200k range, as it is at many, you either need to be rich or it needs to provide you with meaningful job opportunities.

Well the cost has skyrocketed as the quality has plummeted, but that's always been college degrees: they are the realm of the wealthy. The recent attempts to make it available to everyone is part of the reason for the skyrocketing costs and plummeting quality.

488 >>>The skills are badly withered now. I'm half afraid another "course correction" will just put me farther out when the rug gets yanked out AGAIN.

Well to be sure we can't know the future about outsourcing. What I can tell you is industry likes to have local, not overseas, support for their products, and will pay a hefty penny to get it. The reasons are purely economic, forced production outages can cost real money, and support that can respond and get you back into production quickly makes dollars and sense, even if that support costs more than over 3x as much as overseas support.

As far as the automation outlook in the US, the entire economy is moving in that direction, now clearly many automation products are "canned" which can be easily outsourced, but so many applications are custom and site specific.

The shortage of people going into industrial controls is so profound that GE actually put out an entire ad series for the field. https://www.ispot.tv/ad/AVck/general-electric-whats-the-matter-with-owen-zazzies

I understand if you are deep into your field and want to stick with it. My point was, yes the market shifted and the type of jobs shifted as some types of solutions were outsourced, but no, the demand for the technical skill of computer programming is alive and well.

492 Generation Z. Like "millennials", et al, this is preferable to treating people like, oh, I don't know, individuals. This IS the United States, after all, where individuality is SICKENING, and IS A DISEASE THAT CANNOT AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

Anyways, the biggest problem is this, ultimately: who teaches the kids? College-educated teachers, for whom the path to getting a job went through college. And thus, EVERYONE needs to follow that path, for that is what worked for them.

I am convinced that this is the source for much of our public schools' mission to make sure kids are prepared to GO TO COLLEGE. Jobs that are necessary and may not require much more than the willingness to grind it out and possibly get your hands dirty are frowned upon in schools even today. Never mind that there is dignity in work. Never mind that, as I have learned over and over and over again in life, we ALL have our role.

We'd be better off if college was looked at as an OPTION at the grade school level, and if instead we try to find what our kids like to do and think about, and then help them find a course where they find work that plays to their strength, instead of focusing on making sure they find a CAREER by 14 - 99% of which will of course require college, as is the bias of public schools.
