Flu shots? Please. That just increases the immunity of microbes to our
vaccines. Um, we have these things called immune systems which will deal

microbes are not viri, and vaccines are not antibiotics.

ABX either kill microbes, or inhibit their reproduction.

Vaccines strengthen your immune system so that it recognizes and attacks viri invaders when they appear in your system. you may still have some signs and symptoms, but the virus in question has a harder time running wild if you've been inoculated.

Posted by: Moki at October 18, 2018 08:17 PM (mFoNl)

You can get the shot once you have had a shingles outbreak. The doctor will put you on a course of Zovirax pills for a week, and then you have to wait about 3 weeks before getting the shot.

Alternatively, if you have not had an outbreak, you can get the shot immediately.

It either prevents another outbreak or lessens the severity.

Shingles are the same virus as chicken pox, which is the same as herpes. If you've had chicken pox as a kid, then you have the virus in your body but dormant. It could manifest as shingles at any time or even never in your entire life.

133 fred macmurray, who played just about every type role in movies - drama, comedy, westerns, leading man, bad guy - had such leverage that his contract for "my three sons" allowed for him to set his own filming schedule: all of his scenes for the season were shot first, he went home to his ranch and the rest of the cast and crew filmed the rest separately.

this gave macmurray about 10 months at home on his ranch - he had extensive real estate holdings including working farms, cattle, horses and vineyards. his macmurray wines still win awards.

Shingles can be incredibly painful. Damn stuff lurks in the facial nerves with me and twice got close to my eye.

Now, it can result in long-lasting pain known as post-herpetic neuralgia, a particularly excruciating facial version known as tic douloureux, or trigeminal neuralgia.

My doctor once told me to simply pray I didn't get that. I'd wish I was dead, he said.

That reminds me...I would like some advice again.

The guy I went walking with last week is a widower. Happily married ten years, she died unexpectedly, has been widowed about 3. We have talked about her before and talked about her on the walk a bit. I guess she knew the first night they met at a fair she was going to marry him. One of those sad beautiful romances. No kids. He's still friends with her fam.

I have no problem dating a widower; at my age any available men will most likely have been married before. He's in his 40s, which is too young I think to decide to throw in the towel on relationships, especially if it was happy. I can't tell if he is healed enough and ready to date again. He hasn't contacted me this week about doing anything or even to just chat. Am I foolish for pursuing something with him? Want to ask him outright if he is interested in me in that way, but am afraid of messing things up.

Ugh, the joys and agonies of dating.

1) Don't leave the contacting up to him. Invite him for another walk.

b) When you're far enough along that you're antsy about whether he's interested in you that way, ask him. This may be too soon.

III) In any case take care of you. If the antsy is driving you crazy, ask him. If you want to see him tell him. If you don't get the answer you want sitting around wondering won't change it.

Had a fun day at work, surprisingly. Busy morning, with a conference call that was actually productive. Then we had a customer come in on his off time for lunch (he's a long-time friend of the company, who's helped us on a lot of stuff). Brought his 10 yr old son in as well.

I ended up hanging out with the kid after we got back to the shop, launching wadded up paper balls from my little desktop catapult (onager-type), trying out my Bug-A-Salt (no flies around though), and showing him the guitar build I'm currently working on, which is stashed alongside my workbench. The last time he visited, I slipped him some bubble wrap to take home, which really annoyed his dad.

Also, one of the hardest things when you lose a spouse is no longer having that person to talk to. I think letting this guy know that you enjoy talking to him would be a good thing to do. It could lead to something more, when he's ready.

So it's not just me.

I consider myself to be a "man of science" but like every time I have gotten a flu shot, I get sick a few days later. I know that's not supposed to be how it works, but it has for me.

So one year I decided I would not get a flu shot and see how long until I got the flu before I would start getting them again. I basically did that for 10 years and never got it.

So I like the idea of getting a flu shot, I would gladly take a shot to not get badly ill, but it really seems like they don't work as well as they are touted.

My advice, worth $0.00? Wait another week or two, then invite him to something innocuous and low-key (e.g., lunch).

There's no telling what his state of mind is. He might not be interested, or he might be grappling with issues regarding his late wife. Either way, forcing the issue will almost guarantee an adverse response. Think about it: what's your first reaction to being put on the spot? It's reflexive to respond negatively.

Give him time. It'll either happen, or not. You can only guarantee the latter by pushing it.

Some info for you about the nasal vaccine.

Xxxxxxx

Why is the nasal spray being recommended as an option this year when it has been shown to not be effective in past flu seasons?

While observational data from 2010-11 through 2015-16 flu seasons indicate that LAIV was not effective among 2 through 17-year-olds against H1N1pdm09 influenza viruses in the U.S., LAIV was effective against influenza B viruses, and was similarly effective to inactivated influenza vaccines against H3N2 viruses. Some data suggest that the new H1N1 vaccine virus included in the new LAIV vaccines will have improved effectiveness against circulating H1N1 viruses; however, no published effectiveness estimates are available yet.

396 That reminds me...I would like some advice again.

The guy I went walking with last week is a widower. Happily married
ten years, she died unexpectedly, has been widowed about 3. We have
talked about her before and talked about her on the walk a bit. I guess
she knew the first night they met at a fair she was going to marry him.
One of those sad beautiful romances. No kids. He's still friends with
her fam.

I have no problem dating a widower; at my age any available men will
most likely have been married before. He's in his 40s, which is too
young I think to decide to throw in the towel on relationships,
especially if it was happy. I can't tell if he is healed enough and
ready to date again. He hasn't contacted me this week about doing
anything or even to just chat. Am I foolish for pursuing something with
him? Want to ask him outright if he is interested in me in that way, but
am afraid of messing things up.

Ugh, the joys and agonies of dating.

Posted by: LizLem at October 18, 2018 08:42 PM (TnaCl)

If
its been 3 years, that's about the average time it takes for people to
think about moving on. He will have to get comfortable around you, and
comfortable with the actual idea of moving on with his life. I'm
guessing he is waging a small minor war in his conscience right now.
You'll need to find the right balance of letting him ease into it, and
at the same time not be invisible. If you have his number it wouldn't be
a bad thing to call him every so often, but don't corner him. Just ask how he's doing and let him go at his speed. You are basically auditioning for a spot that somebody else had that probably meant a lot to him. I guess the short version is give him the space to find his way, but don't be a sucker either. Some dudes can easily accept a new face in their life, and some are going to try and hunt for an exact replacement. Those types can be very hard to deal with. You need to find out just which type he is.

Tetanus vaccine is so effective there are scolarly arguments that routine boosters are probably not needed or can be much further spaced out. There is a very terrible syndrome some get after the shot and more common site of Injection complications.

I dropped soil contaminated steel garden sheers into the top of my foot and had to get a tetanus shot, and given the injury I'd go back in time and still get the shot, but I got that shot in late 2015 and my arm still hurts from it. Injection site is still tender.

Common interests are super-important in long-term relationships. My wife and I met in a Star Wars chatroom (back when there were such things) and it helped break the ice. Not a lot of women get into Star Wars and it sounds like this guy is first generation (like me, though I'm only 29).

So even though it sounds dumb, the fact that you have a classic Leia costume is actually a really good sign because it means that you will share an interest and respect something important to him from his childhood.

Same advice for you, btw.

Don't go looking for women per se. Go looking for things that interest you that are also likely to attract women.

When I was a lad, a friend of mine had a small horse farm. He pointed out that equestrian chicks were slender, usually smoking hot and rich as hell.

He offered to help me learn to ride and take care of horses just to meet upper-tier targets.

Alas, I had horrible allergies and Claritin had not yet been invented. Between the hay and the horses I was a sneezing, mucus-streaming wreck.

By the way, if you can tolerate hay and horses, the advice still stands.

Okay, trying to be a little more serious here...

Common interests are super-important in long-term relationships.

Even more important: common values. Sharing an interest in stamp collecting or whatever is nice, but it's more important to be on the same page about what is important in life.
