A motorcycle police officer stops a driver for shooting through a red light.The driver is a real jerk, steps out of his car and comes striding toward the officer, demanding to know why he is being harassed by the Gestapo! So the officer calmly tells him of the red light violation. The motorist instantly goes on a tirade, questioning the officer's ancestry, sexual orientation, etc., in rather explicit offensive terms. The tirade goes on without the officer saying anything. When the officer finishes writing the ticket he puts an "AH" in the lower right corner of the narrative portion of the ticket. He then hands it to The 'violator' for his signature. The guy signs the ticket angrily, and when presented with his copy points to the "AH" and demands to know what it stands for. The officer says, "That's so when we go to court, I'll remember that you're an asshole!" Two months later they're in court. The 'violator' has a bad driving record with a high number of points and is in danger of losing his license, so he hired a lawyer to represent him. On the stand the officer testifies to seeing the man run through the red light. Under cross examination the defense attorney asks; "Officer is this a reasonable facsimile of the ticket that you issued to my client?" Officer responds, "Yes, sir, that is the defendant's copy, his signature and mine, same number at the top." Lawyer: "Officer, is there any particular marking or notation on this ticket you don't normally make?" "Yes, sir, in the lower right corner of the narrative there is an "AH," underlined." "What does the "AH" stand for, officer?" "Aggressive and hostile, Sir."
"Aggressive and hostile?" "Yes, Sir. "Officer, are you sure it doesn't stand for asshole?" Well, sir, you know your client better than I do. How often can one get an attorney to incriminate his own client?

I am so sad that we weren't able to attend the TXMoMee this year. Unfortunately, my father-in-law, who has been ill for years and critically so for the past few weeks, passed away yesterday.
It may have been my last opportunity to attend the MoMee, as we will leave asap. But still, I wish we could have been there.
Please pray for our family. As much as you prepare for this outcome, it is never easy when it arrives.

For those who are unfamiliar with SoCal weather, a Santa Ana condition (which we're having now) is when the prevailing onshore winds reverse, and instead become offshore winds from the desert. The hot, dry conditions (oftentimes > 90 degrees, 10% humidity) all too often lead to wildfires, but if not, they're really quite nice.

Yeah this one has been beautiful. Not really that much wind (the real fire danger driver), and cool nights.
The change in wind direction means it's as quiet as the countryside here right now. Airliner pattern is overhead, though at several thousand, so you can just hear them powering down and descending as they head for their turn around Mt Miguel for final approach.
Miramar was incredibly active and noisy a few days this week. And, a real rarity, 3 F-18s, almost in formation, flew overhead here Thursday afternoon.
We lucked out a bit and had a freakish rain storm (any rain is a bit freaky here) recently. Cannot recall rain and a Santa Ana condition so close together, ever. But I guess plant moisture is so low, that rain only provided a few days' protection from fire.

Stupid question, but wouldn't a high blood alcohol level tend to cure diseases, since as a sterilizing agent it would kill bacteria and viruses? Fair point, but the same is true of chlorine bleach. The lowest concentration of ethanol you'd need in order to make your blood useful for sterilizing things is on the order of about 60%. That's what, 120 proof?

Any PC techies able to give advice? Got a comp that after the movers handled emits 6x audio beeps before startup. Been like this for 3 months. Sometimes the delay to launch windows is only a minute, sometimes 10. Power comes on, but won't activate screen or launch the OS until beeping stops.

You could open the case and remove/re-seat all the cards and memory modules, that will probably fix it. It's probably something that got shaken loose and makes sporadic contact until vibration or heat settles it... until it goes cold and you start it again the next time.

The beeps mean something, and the number of beeps is an important part of that. Unfortunately, exactly what the beeps mean is specific to your motherboard. If you can get information on what kind of motherboard is installed, then you can look it up online. Or, if it's a pre-built system, then you can go to the manufacturer's website, sign onto the forum there, and ask in the tech support forum what exactly it means for your specific model of computer.

Back in the day we had DSL, and always had shitty connection until late morning. Turned out that the marine layer, coming in at night, caused water to condense in the connection (up on the phone pole), which didn't dry out until late morning.
Once that was fixed, it worked fine.

Big story lately here in SoCal that Angels owner Arte Moreno has directed the organization to announce they're moving out of Angel Stadium in Anaheim soon (as in, after the 2019 season). They claim the stadium just doesn't meet standards for a major league baseball team anymore.
My hunch is that this is actually just a hardball move by Moreno to scare the City of Anaheim into paying for upgrades, so he doesn't have to do it.

You could open the case and remove/re-seat all the cards and memory modules, that will probably fix it. It's probably something that got shaken loose and makes sporadic contact until vibration or heat settles it... until it goes cold and you start it again the next time.

The beeps mean something, and the number of beeps is an important part of that. Unfortunately, exactly what the beeps mean is specific to your motherboard. If you can get information on what kind of motherboard is installed, then you can look it up online. Or, if it's a pre-built system, then you can go to the manufacturer's website, sign onto the forum there, and ask in the tech support forum what exactly it means for your specific model of computer.

Grab a flashlight, crack the case, and shoot some pictures of the board, then look them over and see what's silkscreened on the board.

Quite a few regulars, plus some new folks, including one 'Ette who came in from Maryland(!) just for the MoMe (fortuitously, her father lives here, and so she was able to squeeze in a visit with him as well).
Unfortunately, we were unable to maintain a successful FaceTime connection with our Lone Star State counterparts, but think we have a fix for next year.
On the bright side, we raised almost $60 for the Family Research Council, thanks to the raffling off of two autographed copies of The Deplorable Gourmet.

The answer depends mostly on the BIOS, and also on whether all beeps are the same duration. If it were a Dell computer, six beeps mean a video card problem. For an AMD (which is just the CPU), it's probably not a Dell (who almost exclusively used Intel). Turn on the computer and start hitting either F2 or Del (like a crack monkey) in an attempt to get into the BIOS screen. You can often find a place where it lists boot problems, and should be able to identify the BIOS manufacturer. Then google "BIOS-name POST beep codes" to find out what it means. If it happened during a move, you could try reseating (removing and repolacing) all the boards connected to the motherboard, but that is only a good idea if you know what you are doing.

Instead, there *had* to be a Game 163, which the tired Cubs lost, which forced them into the Wild Card game, which they lost. And the Brew Crew got to the division finals, and now they are on the verge of losing to the Trolley Dodgers.

You don't actually need all that information. You need to know the BIOS manufacturer and the BIOS version that was last flashed into the motherboard. If you identify the mainboard/motherboard you can look up what BIOS was shipped with the board, but not what BIOS is actually installed. I believe beep codes have actually changed with BIOS releases, which doesn't help with identifying the problem. If the computer boots at all, your best bet is to either catch the BIOS logo during the boot process, or get into the BIOS screens and find the BIOS information and maybe an error log. I always solved these problems by using a second computer to test parts or by swapping known good parts into the computer.
If the problem appeared after a move, it's most likely a loose connection or unseated board. If you want to try reseating the boards, make sure you have one hand on the metal chasis of the computer at all times while you are working inside it since many parts are static sensitive.

Oh bother, that's lousy. I didn't know they were changing the POST error codes by firmware version now. Ok yeah, you probably want to get into the BIOS menu - usually F2 or delete key right as it's booting - and copy down the revision number. Phone pictures are good for this too so you don't have to scribble down everything and later on find out that you need some other version number on the screen that you didn't copy down because it didn't look important at the time.

It's not as hard as it sounds, but it's best to get somebody who knows what they are doing to help you the first time. It can be hard to even tell what each part is at first.
In 30 years, I think I only broke one computer (which cost a whopping total of $5 new) while trying to fix it. Considering how many I have had to restore to working condition and how much some of them have cost ($30-50K), I'm kind of surprised.
You mentioned a bad disk - it's not likely to be that. If it is a bad disk you should get video early in the boot process and end with a screen that says something about the disk, although precisely what happens still depends on the BIOS.

Good advice, but only if you can follow proper anti-static precautions. Use a grounded wrist strap (or firmly grasp the metal computer chasis) at all times and make sure you place each part on or inside an anti-static bag while it is out of the computer. Don't do any of this near a rug or a cat or while wearing wool. I just mentioned two things you probably don't have (grounded wrist strap and anti-static bags). It's possible without these, but requires considerable care and concentration.
It's generally safe to remove and reinsert the boards that fit in the connectors on the motherboard, as long as you only touch them by the edge and don't put them down anywhere before reinserting them. It is also safe to unplug cables as long as the dangling end doesn't short against anything while the computer is on and you also need to remember where the cable came from so you can plug it back into the same spot.
If the screen is blank until you hear the beeps, my guess is you either need to reseat (remove and reinsert) or replace the video card. Also unplug the keyboard and plug it back in, since no keyboard will often generate a POST beep code (although it should display an error message as well).

If you hear a sequence of clicking noises from the hard disk it has failed or is in the process of failing. (These clicks are distinctly different from the normal chatter when the disk is in use.) When you first turn on power, you should feel the disk whine up to speed. There should be a single click (when the disk head is driven to a stop to establish it's location). If it doesn't spin up to speed or you hear multiple clicks, it's probably a bad sign.
There are easy ways to ask the disk whether it is healthy, but they require connecting the disk to another computer and running software that retrieve the SMART status from the disk,or booting the current computer using a Linux live CD (or USB stick) and running similar software.

It could also mean that your hard disk is actually a dolphin (there are other ways to check for this and I think there's a Linux kernel module that adds dolphin support).
I used to have a SparcStation 5 with /var/opt/oracle mounted from a SCSI disk in an external chassis. The disk was huge (2GB!) but had a serious stiction problem so to get it to start, I'd have to probe-scsi from the ok prompt and then thwack the external chassis. It would audibly spin up and then the results of the probe-scsi would come back.

There are easy ways to ask the disk whether it is healthy, but they require connecting the disk to another computer and running software that retrieve the SMART status from the disk,or booting the current computer using a Linux live CD (or USB stick) and running similar software.

I also have a computer dilemma. The other day, as I was going to log into eBay, the text on the login page suddenly changed to what appears to be Cyrillic. All of it. Even the stupid Facebook logo thing. So, I pretty much freaked. I closed the browser, turned off the wifi, unplugged my modem, then ran a virus/malware scan. Nothing. Of course, that doesn't mean my computer hasn't been turned into a zombie, but I don't know what to look for if it HAS been hacked. It's an older MacBook laptop - one of the white ones. Online research hasn't been very helpful. Any suggestions? I'm using my tablet to do password transactions online until I can vet the computer. I don't think a random keystroke could have changed the text like that, either.
Also - if there is malware, etc., would it also be on the backups on my external drive? Probably yes, so how would I get rid of it there?

Anyway, y'all may take heart that this mid term is going to be a nausea inducing one for the Dems. The game has changed because of one man and his unceasing efforts.
We aren't going to lose the House, the only speculation is how many seats past the majority will be gained. Senate the same way.

No, you do not need a separate OS for it. It will work for any version of Windows, 7 and higher. It includes the WD backup software.
I don't think it will work with an iPad, but I'll need to check with that. I think iOS only wants to back up to either the iCloud backup or to a PC or Mac and doesn't have the support for external disks.

OK so I'm not seeing any external backup solutions for iOS (iPhone or iPad) that don't use a separate PC or Mac. That doesn't mean they don't exist, just that I don't know of any offhand.
Option 1 is to use the online iCloud backup. Your iCloud account comes with 5 gigglebutts of backup free, and there are monthly paid plans for 50GB/$0.99, 200GB/$2.99, and 2TB/$9.99.
Option 2 is to plug it into your Mac or Windows PC, launch iTunes, and run the backup command. This is free (as long as you already have the computer) and doesn't store your backups offsite, if that's a concern. But you have to remember to plug it in and run the backup.

I watched a some of the different football games yesterday. I have got to find a way to cut out at least one of the announcers during the games. I think the 2 announcer thing used to be a play by play and a color man, usually an ex player or coach. The color guy would make some comments occasionally, but now,
they never shut the fukc up...never...not even to breath.
I turned the sound down to 3. Enough to hear the refs whistle.
