Polls: Blue Wave Receding

CNBC doesn't find Democrats outperforming their normal registration advantage.

CNBC All-America Economic Survey shows no big blue wave in November
3 Hours Ago | 00:52
With economic optimism soaring in the country, will Democrats be able to sweep to power in either house of Congress or will buoyant sentiment help Republicans keep hold of their Congressional majorities?

The latest CNBC All-America Economic Survey offers mixed signals, but leans against a wave Democratic election like that those that swept Republicans to power in 2010 and 2014.

The poll of 800 Americans across the country, with a margin of error of 3.5 percent, found a six-point Democratic lead on the question of who voters will choose in the November congressional elections. The 42 percent to 36 percent margin is not far from what pollsters would expect given the greater percentage of Democratic registered voters.

"A six point differential is not something that's going to cause a big electoral wave," said Micah Roberts, the Republican pollster on the CNBC poll, a partner Public Opinion Strategies. "Economic confidence that people have among a lot of groups is providing a buffer" for Republicans.

And while an ABC poll finds a nine point Democrat lead in the generic congressional poll -- 53-42 -- in the sixty-six districts that are actually competitive, that actually are in play, Republicans lead those by a single point, 47-46.

Guys, don't vote because you believe the Republican Party should be rewarded.

Vote because you hate the progressive totalitarians and dealing them a setback may actually drive them mad.

52 When the "Blue wave" topic started gaining traction part of me was confused . . . a "wave" election, as I understood it, was a sea change thing. The broad electorate is so fed up, so tired of the party in power that they act as an almost uncontrollable force to toss that party out.
Think the Gingrich revolution. Think the Tea Party wave. Even think about Pelosi's 2006 win at the height of Bush fatigue.
Nothing on the ground now looks like that. This isn't a wave election, properly understood.
The "Blue wave" was -- like so many other things these days -- a manufactured concept. A narrative to be sold.
The democrats may make some gains in the House. But they'll probably come up short.
Don't listen to me and be soothed. These people want to destroy us all; they would think nothing of personally destroying you, or your family, if it stood in the way of their power. Go vote. Turn out your GOP voter friends.

53 My incumbent Republican Rep is under indictment for insider trading. From what I've seen, he probably did it. He's still on the ballot. I double checked my registration last Friday and mentioned to a friend that If you sewed Jeffery Dahmer's reanimated head onto zombie Ted Bundy's shoulders so there was a two headed undead serial killer, he'd have my vote before the Democrat.

And besides, in Congress, he'd blend.

144 What does the NPC vote look like?

Posted by: torabora at October 16, 2018 07:38 PM (vCX3q)

145 Go back to 2006 and the last legitimate blue wave. You had then a President that was wildly unpopular, even within his own party, you had a Republican Congress that had abandoned its base and was ridden with scandal, and you had an economy that was doing well for certain sectors of the economy while at the same time offshoring good paying blue-collar manufacturing jobs with stagnating wages for those blue-collar jobs that still existed. You also had a Democratic platform that ran on ending the Iraq War, cleaning up Congress, creating blue-collar jobs, and making the rich pay their fair share.

Fast forward to today, and none of those conditions exist. Not a single one. The President has the total support of his base and party. The Republican Congress, while being generally disappointing, has delivered a massive victory for morale with the Kavanaugh confirmation and has generally avoided actively screwing the base. Wages are increasing for the first time in decades, there is record-low unemployment, and blue-collar jobs that were said to be gone forever are flooding back into the country. Meanwhile, the Democrats' sole message is "Orange man bad."

Furthermore, the Democrats have lost almost every special election held since Trump became President. If there was such resentment towards Trump, then shouldn't these special elections have all gone their way? The situations are nothing alike, so how can I believe that a blue wave is coming?

Posted by: Ghost of Lee Atwater at October 16, 2018 07:38 PM (nu45M)

I wouldn't call them in. Let leftist strongholds burn. Make leftist governors and mayors plead for the National Guard.

Otherwise they'll immediately blame Trump for everything that happens, and accuse him of "occupying" Red turf to impose his will.

Make them crawl for help. They've sown the wind. Let them reap the whirlwind.

(Afterthought: Trump could do some awesome trolling if they beg him for help. He could declare their municipalities "sanctuary cities" for the rioters.)

173 Yes, it is undoubtedly true, that if the Democrats lose in the midterms, they will go batshit crazy. However comma, if they win they will be even worse.

They must be dealt an un-spinnable, irrefutable, decisive and historic electoral loss. One for the record books. This will take plenty of nominal democrats to accomplish. It is the only way, though, to get things headed back to something approaching normalcy.

The NYT is polling this race right now and you can watch it live here (it won't resume until evening though):

https://www.nytimes.com/.../elections-poll-azsen-3.html

Don't make too much of the numbers until they get up to 250 people. There are some quirky things about how they stratify that distort the numbers at the early stages.

Also, this is a legitimate poll with serious methodology. Read the whole page and that should be obvious.
Posted by: WIGOPer

I really think that race is over.

It's not going to be the blowout it should be, but I feel pretty confident Sinema is going down. Probably 4-5 points.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at October 16, 2018 07:30 PM

This is an interesting point.
It is accepted law within the DOD that fraternization between the sexes of different rank amounts to rape when the difference in rank is so substantial that the junior party has no real recourse.

During Clinton's presidency, IIRC, an Army Captain met and fell in love with a Staff Sergeant. They planned to get married. This was made public, courts martial followed and both were sent to prison in Leavenworth, he for 6 years, she for 3 or 4. I recall reading they were eventually married after they got out.

The difference in rank between the Commander-in-Chief and an intern is as far apart as it gets. Using this line of reasoning, Monica was raped.

The double standard in play here is unbelievable.

243 237 I've been very suspicious about that blue wave bc the prog sites I occasionally visit have been frantically hyping voting - as if they know they're in trouble. They just don't show the confidence you would expect.

Of course, they also think they're going to get raped to death and forced to have babies. Probably in that order, knowing them.

244 That's how it goes if you count all presidents. Republican presidents only lose an average of 11 seats, which is not enough to turn the House and Trump is not an average Republican.

___________

Good to know, interesting statistic

Republicans do tend to be way better at midterm voting. Democrats are the Low Info Voter Party and need a draw at the top of the ticket.

Still, Republicans really dropped the ball on all of this early voting absentee ballot nonsense over the years. They really gave up a big advantage ceding that to Democrats. Should have stopped it cold. The idea of someone voting months early by mail is absurd. Way too much opportunity for fraud.

I think it's a little late for that. Ideally, I suspect a month before the election is about the right time for an October surprise. You need to give the surprise time to soak in, spread to the LIVs, make the talk show rounds, have some anguished editorials, have a 60 Minutes segment, etc., in short to fester nicely.

For example, I think ChiFi waited too long. She should've sprung that crap at least a week earlier, during the hearings, which she could have hijacked.

324 237 I've been very suspicious about that blue wave bc the prog sites I occasionally visit have been frantically hyping voting - as if they know they're in trouble. They just don't show the confidence you would expect.

Of course, they also think they're going to get raped to death and forced to have babies. Probably in that order, knowing them.
Posted by: Mrs. Peel at October 16, 2018 07:53 PM (JPRju)

They look at the 2016 election and see the vote total and think they've got a shot. Then they look and realize that all those extra democrat voters are just in California, and they could be fucked. I'm hoping that Republican enthusiasm is across the board, but the Democrats are more or less just in their nutty strongholds.

It's a bit like the use of the special election to be a gauge of things. Those tend to be low level below the radar things and then the democrats win them. When they've gotten excited and essentially nationalized those elections they've fucked up and lost. (Alabama being an outlier of #metoo destruction beta testing.) Well they can't hide from the people that there is an election on Nov. 6.

From what I can see so far on the voter's pamphlet. we have a gun
grabber initiative, one to jack up energy rates for "green energy" and
one to start taxing food items again. It just never stops

Posted by: notsothoreau at October 16, 2018 08:05 PM (JKNZq)
-------------------------------
The gun-grabber initiative is particularly offensive. Not only for restricting rights of adults 18 - 21 to own guns (would be made illegal), but a felony if you don't have a home safe for your guns to be stored at all times. Yeah, if a junior crook breaks into YOUR house and steals your gun, YOU are the felon.

Yeah, the crook breaks into a house, with an average 20 minute response time from the cops, and he is going to wait there while you fiddle with your safe's lock to open it and get your gun for defense.

But the biggest scam was the Wash State Supreme Court, who decided that an illegally confusing signature page to get the initiative on the ballot was ok anyway, even though it clearly was the opposite of what the words in the law actually say about not having confusing initiative signature gathering pages. An earlier district court judge struck it down as being unconstitutional, said it was obvious. The WSSC overturned it.

WSSC, really, go have intimate sexual relations with frozen pineapples. You are a bunch of anti-American traitors. We won't forget.

The interest rate also has a component, the "risk premium" that depends on the probability of default.

Now, the risk of default itself depends on the interest rate.

The result is that at some point, when the base risk of failure gets high enough, the risk premium will blow up. So, at some point, a venture becomes "unlendable".

Or...maybe... the higher interest payments will finally force a reckoning with the national debt.

You get that massive interest payments act as a check on government spending, right? Like in your personal life. When your variable interest rate loan spikes, you suddenly decide to maybe pay it the fck off or maybe not borrow so much.

Or you can believe that the Fed is still Obama's tool, and borrowing money for free is the natural state of nature.

I figure there's four ways this can go:

The Bitch is voted out in disgrace and LeDeon goes in as a junior chairborne Senator. He spends the next 6 years fetching coffee while the grownups talk.

The Bitch wins, and doesn't complete her term (death or resignation under pressure from the other Donks). LeDeon is appointed to the post by Moonbeam. He spends the next 6 years fetching coffee while the grownups talk.

The Bitch wins, serves out her term, and then LeDeon is elected in 2024. He spends the next 6 years fetching coffee while the grownups talk.

The Bitch wins, serves out her term, and some other commie cocksucker is elected because LeDeon died in a tragic and embarrassing accident with a Dyson vacuum, a vat of Crisco and a syphilitic armadillo.

I'll leave it to Teh Horde to decide which is preferable.

Indeed, we do not. However, if the economy overall grows faster than the debt (on a percentage basis), we are actually making up ground in the long run. I believe that this is what Dick Cheney was referring to when he once (infamously) said "deficits don't matter". You don't actually have to be paying down the debt to be improving the overall financial position of the country. It would be prudent, of course, to be well under that Plimsoll mark of financial success, to purchase leeway for future headwinds, but I'll take any progress I can get.

Right now, I think that means any deficit under $600B is a "win", although I would, of course, prefer that it be much lower than that.

percentage basis), we are actually making up ground in the long run. I
believe that this is what Dick Cheney was referring to when he once

well, economy is not able to keep up with debt, but that is the plan, to inflate faster than debt, even as debt grows ... it is a crazy DOOOOMed plan. ZIRP and QE screw too many people, inflating our way out is craycray. ... for now ... it is the path,

but at least bringing jobs back could MAYBE set us up better, for the "jubilee" ... or whatever (reset of some sort, I prefer the "renegotiate the debt to the foreign cheaters like China, and the oligarchs that were part of the coup ... millions to Hillary for favors, even as they plotted against Trump AND against of FreeElection Republic)

We bailed out massive mistakes of major banks that cheated, even ran money for drug cartels ... WTF? So They should pay, not the average American that they have used to mortgage America to back their 300:1 leveraged gambling debts. (LTCM, later Corzine and his gambling/thefts)

not sure what Cheney was referring to, but deficits always did matter ... the magic of free trade was always a lie, deficits only enriched China which used it to be global assets and build their military. The globalists are intent on making USA just a client state of their NWO ... imo.

and others followed our lead ... the bonfire of the currencies ... such a shame, but the "DeepState NWO" types led us down this path. Change will be hard ... might need more miracles on ice.

634 I'm reading a lot of commentators now saying "maybe it will be a split, with Dems taking the house and Republicans gaining in the Senate!"

Which means: Dems are doomed

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 16, 2018 09:29 PM (39g3+)

635 Continued GOP House is at minimum a crucial defensive measure, at most (not too likely) a step to Congress actually doing something about important issues.

So, GOP House better. But it's important to keep in mind why, and what we're dealing with.

I'm pondering whether a Max Red Scenario - 59 Senate seats, same # or a few pick-ups in the House - would constitute a "shock" to the system in a way that would help Trump enact some of his agenda (most of which Congress hasn't done zip about).

Hmmm, probably not likely. Beltway GOP will just take it as vindication of their do-nothing strategy, and it won't be an unreasonable take.

They outlasted the Tea Party phenomenon without doing much, they now have achieved an earlier goal of running without any theme or commitments whatsoever (they tried this in 2010 and 2014 but were forced to issue a program - which they did little to implement after the election, natch).

With the Dems becoming even more unhinged than before, "vote for us, our opponents are crazy!" is an even stronger message. With zero content.

732 As I said above, keeping the House GOP is mostly likely, at best, a defensive measure. Of sorts.

It's not impossible that a still-GOP House would actually enact some key Trump priorities, or show some tiny trace of fiscal sanity - oh, wait, no, that second thing IS impossible - but it's not the way to bet.

Definitely worth keeping, denying to the racist-authoritarians. But think more of "vote for Trump to ensure Hillary is not prez" sort of strategy than creating conditions for real action.

745 Continued GOP House is at minimum a crucial defensive measure, at most (not too likely) a step to Congress actually doing something about important issues.

You can't have it both ways. If the lesson the GOP learns by winning is "we don't have to do shit", well that's the lesson learned.

And having the GOP House as a defensive measure against crazy loons neglects the fact that the House is almost completely neutered. Let Pelosi bang her useless gavel.
