When the Dream of Diversity Goes Wrong [KT]

hanson 35.jpg

What happens when the left's goal of diversity runs into either reality or some of their other goals? Some vignettes from the news:

Rural California becomes less diverse, more dangerous

Victor Davis Hanson's message here is not new, but this piece is particularly graphic as a harbinger of where illegal immigration and Democratic rule are taking us.

I live on a farm beside a rural avenue in central California, the fifth generation to reside in the same house. And after years of thefts, home break-ins, and dangerous encounters, I have concluded that it is no longer safe to live where I was born. I stay for a while longer because I am sixty-five years old and either too old to move or too worried about selling the final family parcel of what was homesteaded in the 1870s.

Rural Fresno County used to be one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the United States. I grew up with first-, second-, and third-generation farmers--agrarians of Armenian, German, Greek, Mexican, Japanese, Portuguese, Punjabi, and Scandinavian descent.

Race and ethnicity were richly diverse; yet assimilation was the collective shared goal--made easier because immigration was almost entirely a legal and measured enterprise.

I have seen huge bags of trash thrown onto the side of Highway 43 through VDH's hometown, Selma. I haven't spent a lot of time on its back roads, but nearby I have seen dumped couches, beds and appliances. He describes worse.

The tragedy of illegal immigration is that it did not have to be this way. Legal, measured, meritocratic, and diverse immigration leads to rapid assimilation and Americanization and enriches the country culturally and economically.

Its antithesis--illegal, mass, non-meritocratic, and non-diverse immigration--hinders the melting pot. It fuels tribalism, while incurring vast costs in social services to ensure some sort of parity for those from impoverished southern Mexico and Central America. The wages of our citizen working poor and their access to needed social services are not helped by thousands of new arrivals without legality and English.

Yet illegal immigration in such numbers certainly empowers a host of special interests. . . .

He identifies some of them. Sure seems like we have been stupid about immigration for a long time.

Harvard vs. Asians

JJ Sefton picked up this piece by Justin Torres in City Journal on the discrimination case against Harvard, See Their Faces.

This week, after more than four years of pretrial litigation and sifting through 160,000 documents, Students for Fair Admission will get its day in a Massachusetts federal district court on allegations that Harvard University discriminates against Asian-American applicants. The trial is expected to last for at least three weeks. Based on the evidence that SFA presented in pretrial motions, Harvard--whether it wins or loses in court--is in for a long, embarrassing slog.

The case is the latest in the federal courts' tortured consideration of affirmative-action policies in higher education. (Harvard, as a private university, is not subject to constitutional requirements that apply to public universities, but because it accepts federal funding, it is subject to Title VI, the civil rights law that replicates much of the constitutional structure.) The law governing affirmative-action practices is a complete mess. . . .

Nice piece with some interesting details. Check it out.

Lost in the abstract discussion of numbers and trends is the fact that the victimized students are real people, often from disadvantaged backgrounds, with their own legitimate aspirations built on years of sterling academic achievement. The most poignant section of a motion bristling with statistics and regression analysis is an excerpt of deposition testimony from a college admissions counselor at Stuyvesant High School in New York City. Admissions to Stuyvesant are race-blind and based on test scores--at least for now, though Mayor Bill de Blasio is advocating for a "holistic" admissions review there as well. . .

Q. You want to keep going? You want to tell me why this is upsetting to you?

A. Because these numbers make it seem like there's discrimination, and I love these kids, and I know how hard they work. And these just look like numbers to all of you guys, but I see their faces.

Elizabeth Warren needs to Face the Music

Earlier this week, JJ Sefton linked a Daniel Greenfield piece that reminded us of some of the earlier transformations in the life of Elizabeth Warren, in addition to becoming a Native American:

Elizabeth Ann Herring has been many things in her life. All of them fake.

She represented an insurance company in an asbestos case before becoming a consumer rights crusader. She was paid $350,000 to teach a single course before deciding to fight student debt. She was a Republican, then became a socialist, and then announced, "I am a capitalist to my bones."

Ironic how her political career has intersected (ahem) in unfortunate ways changes in leftist causes over the years.

As OregonMuse suggested yesterday, even many on the left are concluding that Elizabeth Warren has now blown it big time. Here is one of them, in Current Affairs:

I like Elizabeth Warren a lot. She's probably my second-favorite elected official. It's only thanks to her that we have the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the best agency in the U.S. federal government. She is gutsy, smart, and she cares about the economic well-being of ordinary people. Which is why I am so frustrated that Warren has so badly mishandled this native ancestry issue.
Obviously Donald Trump does not care about Native people. (He put a picture of Andrew Jackson in the Oval Office, for God's sake.)

Side note: Dang, these people get upset over statues and portraits and such lately. Trump does a little symbolic reach across the aisle by hanging a portrait of the Democrat whose face is on the 20 dollar bill and it proves he hates Native Americans.

But back to Elizabeth Warren: The author of this piece outlines the times Warren has used the claim of Native American heritage professionally before ripping into her handing of the resulting controversy. His bottom line:

After offending Cherokee people and doubling down on an indefensible claim, Warren really cannot run for president.

Interesting to see his question about why Warren didn't consult with some Cherokees before proceeding, in light of Daniel Greenfield's comments on Native American attitudes toward DNA testing in the piece linked just above.

Perhaps it's time for Elizabeth Warren to relax and reflect on her natural tendency to choose the recipes of a French chef for a Native American cookbook. Could she be part French? When she was young, was she La Fille aux cheveux de lin? The Girl with the Flaxen Hair? Go ahead and retire to a little place in Provence, Elizabeth. Cook some of your favorite recipes and tell some stories. We won't mind.

Note: This is the Thread before the Gardening Thread.

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

Hope you have a great weekend.

7 "Diversity" is the trojan horse that the Left uses to drive things leftward.

Since they view everything in racial/identity group terms, and are confident of their ownership of any and all opinions held by identity groups, they use it to place people of their opinions and to move institutions and policies leftward.

9 Willowed:
Here's some polling info that came out last night for those who care.

No
statewide polls in Michigan since last week, but they polled two
congressional districts. A tie in the 11th, narrow GOP lead in the 8th
(which has a GOP incumbent.

Here's were things get interesting.
They also polled for US Senate in both districts and James was running
even in the 11th and was leading 50-45 in the 8th, which means he is
outperforming the congresscritter.

Stabenow was last polled at 9
points ahead, but if she's now losing the 8th, she may be in real
trouble. James is from the Detroit area and if he pulls just 20 percent
of the vote there, she's toast.

No one's looking at Michigan, even RCP has it "likely Dem" but the Dems could lose this seat.

11 Today's Dem/commie party is simply so arrogant that they think they can direct the tribalism their policies bring about to stay in power. Unfortunately it isn't only commie traitors and their useful idiots who suffer when they get enough power to impose their envy driven agendas or their schemes break down and countries devolve to full on tribalism.

17 It seems to me that the ambition of the modern Progressive Liberal Socialist is to rule over the population as was done in medieval time by the Feudal Warlords.

Modern Progressive Liberal Socialists seem to have difficulty competing with their middle-class peers who are not socialists so the remedy for the Socialist is to eliminate their competition. Thus the deliberate destruction of the middle class.

The result is absolute rule by the socialist elite over an army of inferior serfs. San Francisco, Los Angeles with their homeless and super rich and oppressive government regulation that forces the middle class to leave or drive the middle class into bankruptcy.

26 Went with my son to Virginia Tech last weekend for a pre-application visit.

Tech is a SERIOUS engineering school. THey have other stuff, but the largest section is the engineering school.

So, I was kind of surprised at the presentations.

First, the admissions department came up and talked about, you know, admissions.

Important to note - they use a "Coalition" application rather than the more common "Common app"

Here is the web page:

http://www.coalitionforcollegeaccess.org/

Anyone notice anything interesting about that page?

So, continuing, part of the Coalition application is to answer a handful of questions, in 120 words or less. One of the key questions is "How have you encoutered discrimination in your life and what did you do about it?"

We went to the engineering presentation afterward. On stage was a lady who was the head of admissions for engineering, and joining her were 6 engineering students, who were a Middle Eastern male, 3 African American females, an Indian female, and a Caucasian female.

They talked a LOT about how awesome the diversity in engineering programs are and how they got to help out underprivileged children. That got about as much time as the discussion of the engineering education.

Oh, btw, VT has 22% females in their engineering program. As I looked out over the crowd that was listening, I noticed that the students were overwhelmingly white and male.

You know those annual online trainings they make you do, so you can demonstrate you're with the program?

Doesn't matter what line of work you do, you have them. And they do vary greatly in how bad they're done, from bad to "worse than oral surgery without anesthesia" bad.

The worst part? The names and pictures they use for the vignettes. Egad, they are so diverse it makes me sick.

"Pablo comes to work, and notices that Pinjab is looking confused. He asked Pinjab, "what's the matter." Pinjab says, our boss, Veshamdofedisaba, says I have to have this report done by Friday. He says "this sounds like a personnel question, and Osama can help us sort this out."

33 6 Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Isn't this the agency that has no Congressional oversight because Dances with Lies designed it that way?
_____________

It's completely corrupt.

The CFPB bought itself a HQ building in a premium D.C. site, across the street from the White House (no actual reason for them to need such a pricey spot). Then they budgeted $55 million to renovate the already-nice office building, which quickly increased to $214 million, which the Federal Reserve Inspector General ultimately rejected as ludicrous.

But even the "slimmed down" renovations ended up costing taxpayers $339 a square foot, or more than the average costs of building a brand new office building in D.C.

This is just one example of "the best agency in the federal government." (How anybody could say that with a straight face is a testament to their total detachment from reality).

39 i asked this yesterday, and I'll ask it again now. And I am being genuine about it...I'm not being cheeky.

People constantly talk about how great Canada is, but...what's the diversity quotient in Canada? And I am not criticizing Canada at all. If people are of a certain background, they are of a certain background. Just like I don't criticize the small Midwestern towns for lack of diversity. It is what it is, and I am not gonna say one way is better than another.

I also hear how great Canada is, and I am sure it is a lovely country. But, I hear there is better education, better health care, nicer people, and so on. Why so the illegal immigrants stop here then? If Canada is this perfect utopia....why don't they keep moving northward? I don't get it. Again, I am not being cheeky.

One thing I've noticed with the commies and labor policy that your example also illustrates, is that they're focused almost exclusively on making it so that labor doesn't actually have to.... labor. Vacation time, PTO days, sick leave, maternity leave etc etc. All are good things IN MODERATION that attract workers and can provide for a good work environment.

But it's a balancing act between providing for the worker and actually getting the work done so that the company can stay profitable and healthy. The commies basically proceed on the premise that the company has no say in assigning work to it's own workers.

Something else to keep in mind. These mail in results do not include those since October 9th from 8 Florida counties affected by Hurricane Michael - all rabidly Red counties: Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty, Washington. The voting results from these counties in 2016 were 108,975 for PDT and 36,525 for Scankles. Just imagine if they were included in those totals.

Looked back at the 2012 Senatorial election map, and 6 of these counties went overwhelmingly for Connie Mack. the other two - Nelson won Holmes by 48 votes and Franklin by 1 (!).

And in 2014, Rick Scott won decisively over Crist in all 8 counties: 69,934 to 26.899

Gosh, hope these people will be able to vote by election day.

As this area is part of the Redneck Riviera, instinct says most of them will literally walk across broken glass to vote against Gillum & Nelson.

Two Proud Boys have been arrested, 8 more are being searched for, but NO ANTIFA have been arrested.

So much for Equal Application of the Law, if only we had some Federal Guy whose job it is to oversea these kinds of things... you know... some Attorney...

Right, but if there is to be a BLUE WAVE!!!1 those seats are the ones that need to flip. The Dems should be walking away with them.

More to the point, Stabenow should at least be running a few points ahead. She's been there for 18 years, universal name ID, etc.

I'm not saying it's a done deal, I'm saying the fight ain't over and the Dems could lose this seat.

No one thought Michigan was in play in 2016. No. One.

Well, except me. I knew that if Trump could get enough blue collar voters to flip, he could finally carry the state.

I also knew that with the combination of Michigan, Florida and Ohio, he would win. Pennsylvania and Wisconsin were the bonus round.

Same is true here. The Dems have been pissing away cash on a fool's errand in Texas while letting a solid seat get into trouble. If James wins, the schadenfreude will be delicious and we'll have our second black GOP Senator.

The problem lies in the people currently making it less diverse. If CA had negligible immigration all along and it was about as diverse as it was when Hanson's ancestors first lived on the farm in 1870, they'd be better off now.

He also feels obliged to do some handwaving in favor of illegals and "diversity" - a mild form of virtue signaling. I wish conservatives felt comfortable just making their points without qualifying them, due to the reflexive fear that's been ingrained in them by leftists. No matter how much Hanson tries to sound moderate, leftists will still hate him. We don't even owe the left a passing nod with respect to their points.

Under Trudeau, the government likes to pick its refugees. 25,000 Syrians? Sure, let them in with little or no background checks. People coming across the US border from further south? Not as great in the PR department. As well, the Syrians really stretched resources in the areas where they were being settled so when people were starting so show up from the south (particularly Haitians who had been staying in the US after the earthquake and their time had run out), the government put out a "Sorry, don't expect us to welcome you with open arms."

That being said, Canada's refugee system is much more lenient than its regular immigration system. If you're just a Joe Average wanting to immigrate to Canada via regular channels, good luck.

As for diversity? A lot of the provincial governments along with the federal government push it, including hiring and all the way through public policymaking. The Canadian military is especially being smacked around with this. They're buying planes and ships and other equipment from other countries that otherwise would be designated for the scrap heap because it's too expensive to buy new, but doggone it, we need 25% representation from women and minorities because that will bring greater diversity of thought! For perspective, there are more active duty US Marines than the entire Canadian military combined. Last I heard the women/minority representation in the Canadian military is about 14.2%.

I also expect it to be closer to the election to juice turnout, just as his famous midnight rally did in 2016. He seems to be targeting areas based on putting seats out of reach and demoralizing the Dems, hence hitting Arizona when McSally is starting to open up a gap.

The goal is to demoralize the Dems in the seats they need to keep/thought they would gain and get the GOP fired up. Then he can hit the more marginal states to create the wave effect.

This 1965 immigration (now open border, global trade) policy makes most sense if it is seen in its root source ... BigMoney and Commie influence that are both (if they are indeed separate) intent on a New World Order, and an end of the powerful American sovereign nation.

Turns out there was/is a Christian Church who is responsible for refugee resettlement and they get money from the US Government for the humanitarian work they do. It's also easier to disappear in the US. Canada's got a population of less than 40 million and a lot of it concentrated in just a few cities, so there are less options for not only where to live but also for blending in, so to speak. You're not going to find huge enclaves of Spanish-speakers in Canada.
As well, I can be corrected by a current Canadian resident about this, but from my time living there provinces require residency status before you can take advantage of health care services without having to pay up. So best thing to do is claim refugee status in order to get that along with other welfare goodies.

It has always been my impression that rock and roll chicks (I don't know about the music biz these days) were graded on a scale that gave them an extra point or two, because they were rock and roll chicks.

So take Stevie's bandmate, Christine McVey (sp?). At best, she'd be about a 4-5 on human terms. As a rock and roll chick, she's a 6.

Or the aforementioned Joan Jett, I remember looking at pictures of her that people had on their walls. I couldn't stand her music, so I'd be wondering "what's the appeal?" Yeah, all dolled up, snarly and covered in leather or whatever, she'd be about... what, a 7? But if you look the outfits and the makeup off, and saw her in a mall, she'd be a 5.

Don't even get me started on Lita Ford.

I do like maps, and one of the things that have changed about this world, is Google maps, with Google earth and satellite imagery, have changed how we can see some of this.

But back in the day, it was fascinating to me, to look at a map of Canada (or similarly, the old Soviet Union), see vast areas that are absolutely unpopulated, except for occasional dots here and there, and the maps would show all this blue area, large bodies of water, lakes and rivers of all sizes, and it's impossible to imagine what it actually looked like. In reality. Because nobody ever sees it.

Until Google Earth came along. Now we kinda sorta know. And the mystery is gone. Still lovely, I'm sure, but not as fascinating to me as the flat, paper maps.

Well, my thing is, I don't go anywhere near anybody who has anything to do with anybody who has anything to do with popular music.

If you are in the rock and roll hall of fame, I have no use for you.

As I am fond of saying, there a hundreds of competent to stunningly amazing acts that almost nobody knows anything about.

The Pierces are just one example of many. And I'd say, as lovely as they are, they're probably not in my top 50 of acts I love, that if they come to a large city, would be lucky to have 500 people know who they are, and show up to their show.

EKURHULENI, South Africa (AP) - As South Africa's passionate debate over land redistribution grows, one city outside Johannesburg is preparing what the mayor calls a "test case" for the nation - the seizure of hundreds of acres of land from private owners, without paying for it, to build low-cost housing.

Last month, Ekurhuleni's city council voted in favor of forging ahead with "expropriation without compensation," a legal tool that the ruling African National Congress says is necessary to correct the historic injustices of apartheid and distribute land more equitably.

195 We went to a party at the house of a friend of many decades standing in a gated community. I felt most ill-at-ease there, as it was apparent that everyone in the place was chi-chi liberal. (Turns out my friend's wife is fashionably liberal, although he is rock-ribbed conservative, and they were all HER friends.) How this marriage works I have no idea.)

But in any case no one seemed to appreciate the dissonance between "gotta love all the brothers" and the "keep THOSE people away from me." The funny part is that there ARE none of "those people" anywhere near this place. The only riff-raff they tried to keep out - unsuccessfully - was me.

I have absolutely no interest in going into their gated communities. I wouldn't go if invited, and don't care what I was invited for.

I drive past them, and they put stoplights outside their gates, stopping major thoroughfares for interminably long periods of time... just in case ONE of their privileged few needs to exit for some reason.

236 I feel for VDH and his situation, but that's not the half of it. Couple days ago I had to visit the local Social Security office to have my new address recorded. While there, waiting to see someone in order to have my address updated, I noted the other people in the room also waiting.

There were a few people there who were obviously either of retirement age and there to get their SS started, and a few others who were obviously disabled. But most of the people there were non citizens there to get signed up for some kind of "disability" payments. And while many were indeed from "south of the border" there were also plenty of Africans, Chinese and the like as well.

And I know none of these people have ever paid a dime into the system, are not citizens of this country, but there they were, getting signed up to feed at the public teat. It is to weep...

So the point of attack, to me, is not to keep fighting against the traditional democrat party groups, but to point out to them, relentlessly, continuously, that the Leftists have screwed them too.

Black people, old people, idiot college students, single women... all of these people have been screwed by the Left.

Time to shout from the rooftops for a new re-alignment. We're not asking you people to become Republicans. We're telling you that if you want to live your life, you HAVE to turn on the Democrat Party.

Kill it dead.

246 I'm not sure how all that works. I'm doing a bit of a dance with someone now, she's a few years younger than me, and has been indoctrinated, but otherwise has her head so screwed on straight, it's almost scary.

I can't see this going forward, too far, until we get out in the open, exactly how the politics thing gets handled. It may not. And that might be a deal breaker. Which is a shame. It really is, and I can't or won't say just how badly I want this to work out.

248 "Who mows their own lawn anymore!??"

*raises hand*

I just finished the front yard. During the summer I just mow without the bagging attachment, but in the fall I use it to pick up as many leaves as I can without raking. I also did some raking and swept the driveway and sidewalk. I filled four leaf bags today and the leaves have hardly started falling here yet.

I'm trying a new strategy to keep ahead of the leaves this year instead of playing catchup.

I still have to mow the back yard, but there aren't many leaves there yet so I won't bother bagging.

251 Re SS office

I too had the same experience. Went to office to get a new card since original was in tatters. At least 60% of the people waiting were non English speakers and under 40. Not a dime into the system and decades of benefits.

259 Cultural dissolution, another one discovered.

Perusing wiki in search of Eden a new terminology is presented: BP (before the present), as in 10000 BP.

Yep, no more of that BC and AD (in the year of our Lord) confusion, just a simple BP.

Sounds like a skin infection.

I have a leaf blower that also in another configuration accepts an optional vacuum attachment underneath and a bag on the exit port.

Blow the leaves together into piles, switch configuration, suck up the leaves, which are mulched by the impeller, and bag 'em. Easy.

262 Leaves, regrettably, I purchased a small, 2 cycle, leaf blower. Give a do-over I would buy a big one that harnessed the motor on my back.
