Social Justice Warriors Now Outraged Over the "NPC" Meme
This article from Breitbart explains the meme.
The new "NPC" meme mocks leftists by depicting them as unthinking and reflexive automatons. The meme has upset the left so much that Twitter is now banning people posting it for "dehumanizing speech," but its humble origins are the computer-controlled characters of limited intelligence found in most video games. The popular NPC meme trend frames its targets as non-player characters (NPCs) who reflexively spout neo-Marxist axioms in response to real-world events. Actual NPCs are computer-controlled characters in video games with limited scripted responses given the parameters of the games in which they appear. For example, NPCs may assign quests to the player in games like Skyrim, or join the player as a companion in Fallout. Built on the long-running Wojak meme, the NPC meme mocks leftists as expressionless in appearance and bot-like in behavior. The universal standard appearance illustrates the left's political homogeneity.Breitbart has a good collection of memes, depicting leftists as barely-sentient simulated life-forms. Well that's not completely true. You did need them to open doors and such. Plus if you were under 50% in health they could heal you.
I found in certain places you could take one over and get it to do some strange stuff that were not predictable.

Eh, why stop there? The offense at NPC is taken because it a) "dehumanizes" the leftist, b) explains why the leftist spouts the nonsense that he does, because he's programmed to do so.
But the leftists have been using a) and b) in a variety of ways against conservatives for decades. Charges of "racism" or "sexism". Just apply the label. Why don't conservatives like Obama or his policies? They are racists! This is an attempt to dehumanize conservatives and also explain why they believe what they believe without having to address the actual arguments.
So I'm all in favor of NPC if it causes them butthurt. If they're too stupid to understand how hypocritical they are being? Well, I don't care any more. I'm starting to think that they are subhuman and there is no reasoning behind any of their positions. So our use of the tactic is legitimate and theirs is not.

Another one was a photo from the photo essay "A day in the lift of the Soviet Union" (Time-Life, maybe?). There was a picture of children playing a slag heap that often makes westerners stop in shock, but it is presented as normality. I long thought that was one of those scenarios where the photographer knew what he was doing, knew it would get sign-off, and knew it would have the opposite effect that the approvers thought it would.

On a slightly more serious note, he is a good ambassador for conservatism, although he styles himself as center-left. The ideas he speaks of at times are more traditionally thought of as conservative thought. I first ran across him on his timcast channel and he was trashing Vox, because he was maligned - as with Dave Rubin - as some sort of right-wing fascist, because he did not "tow the line" as we say.

They are computer-controlled characters who often exist just to move the story along (give instructions, follow them to the next objective, etc.). The meme works because NPCs will often spout the exact same words/text whenever you approach them, or variations of the same thing any time you engage with them in the game.
The "SJWs as NPCs" meme works so well because this is *exactly* what they do so often: it is a straight stimulus->response flow with one of a few pre-programmed outputs and no thought involved.

The term "mob" dates back quite a ways, and I've never been able to track down where and how it originated. But the best guesses that I've seen is that it's basically a shortened form of "mobile enemy". A mob in a video game is essentially any form of computer controlled sword bait, even if it isn't automatically unfriendly. If it's designed with the idea in mind that you can kill it, then it's a mob.
An NPC is usually thought of as a computer-controlled character that you can interact with in a non-combat fashion. But technically, a random orc that spawns right next to you in an online game and attacks you is an NPC, as well. Players just don't really think of them that way.
Conversely, one player's NPC can be another player's mob. If I'm playing an online game that includes faction warfare (i.e. my faction of players versus another faction of players), such as World of Warcraft, then NPCs that are part of my faction probably can't be attacked by me. But most of them *can* be attacked by players belonging to the other faction.

am considering the new faux StarControl game. it is in the spirit of

Also used in Red Line Brigs. Red lines every 50 ft or so. Prisoners have to stop at every line and request permission from nearest guard to cross.

I don't even know what a "500 year storm" is. He might have said "500 year floods" ... but private insurance companies generally don't do flood insurance along real flood plains.
Of course, a lot of flooding has more to do with water management, or lack thereof ... But there have been some "500 year floods" happening within decades. Strange, but not unheard of and highly unlikely to be connected to anything systemic.

That's classic. They ask for comment from someone they are calling out as perpetuating this cruel mem - and his only comment is "you misclassified me." I'll admit to not know who Ian Miles Cheong is, but almost everyone the press refers to as the "alt right" isn't.

the phrase "500 year storms" comes from statistical predictions of how likely certain events are, based on statistical theory.
In "The Black Swan", Nick Taleb uses this as an example to point out how flawed our current understanding and use of statistical theory is, especially in the frequency of extreme events, those that we consider extremely unlikely.
In real life, and there is hard data to back this up, 500 year storms in fact happen about every 30 years or so. And yet statistical theory still says they should only happen once every 500. We aren't as good at our theoretical math as we like to pretend that we are.

I've never heard that terminology applied to storms. Sure, I know the MFM likes to call every storm "The Storm of the Century!!" but I've never seen any serious labeling of storm intensity by probabilistic likelihood. Obviously, it's a legitimate analysis but I've just never seen anyone using it for anything.
Of course, we have far less historical data on storm intensity than flood occurrences (which are etched into the ground for millenia, and then some).
