Wow: Heidi Heitkamp Puts Out Campaign Ad Identifying Sexual Assault Victims by Name and Address... Without Their Permission

The wheels are coming off all the buses.

Some women say they're not even sexual assault victims.

"We are here to let you know that you are wrong -- this is not 'a movement toward victimization' it's about being a survivor," the ad reads. "We are here to let you know that we have all suffered from domestic violence, sexual assault, or rape -- and that yes, we expect somebody to believe us when we say it. Because it happened."

At the bottom of the letter is a long list of North Dakotan women who are identified as sexual assault survivors. However, some of the women named in the ad say the campaign did not seek their permission.

"A lot of these people listed, including me, did not give anyone permission for our names to be posted," Kady Miller wrote on Facebook. "I don't even support Heidi Heitkamp and I am not a domestic abuse survivor."

"This is completely unprofessional," commenter Keeley Beck, who also found her name on Heitkamp's list, wrote. "I want justice," she added. "For myself and others who were illegally used and taken advantage of for corrupt, infactual, political propaganda."

Another women wrote on Facebook that she was "disgusted" and "furious" to see her name in the ad.

Phil Kerpen has a long thread in which he quotes Heidi Heitkamp's response, presumably from a press conference. She takes responsibility, which isn't really a heroic gesture -- she is responsible for this. She's not being magnanimous.

Here's one of the women, venting:

I'm not really sure what legal theory you'd sue on, unless there's something shady about how she came by this list.

Sounds kind of like someone just pulled a list of people from Facebook who were members of a group that supported victims of domestic violence or something? Idk, article isn't really clear.

I *guess* you could say it's defamation to label someone a domestic violence survivor if you have a good plaintiff? (ie: been with the same dude since high school, so the allegation that she suffered from DV in her life brings embarrassment on to her family and could hurt her husbands career prospects, or something... but even then, what are the provable damages? Some kind of loss of status? Ehhh...)

Campaigns have their public message, then their individual curated messages to individual donors and volunteers and whomever.

Guaranteed if a guy wearing a hi-vis vest over his camo overalls walked in with a checkbook, the staff would be saying, "well, Claire is actually a closet gun enthusiast. She owns an arsenal, really. Loves hunting. But them city folk, you know how they are -- they would primary her if they knew of her real, secret passion for guns."

So an O'Keefe guy walks in pretending to be a potential staffer or donor or whatever but says, "I'll only give the money if she's anti gun!" so the staffers say, "yep, hates guns. Wants to melt them all down and turn them into peace necklaces."

I've pointed out to him that white populations are running at or below replacement levels, that for anyone who is worried about overpopulation, then the only real issue is - How do the Rich White People get rid of all of the surplus brown and black babies? I mean Margaret Sanger knew that was the deal, right from the start.

Well, the Ju 87 did have a built-in Jericho-Trompete to scare the wits out of anyone within hearing distance as it went into its dive. The other reason it's fitting to compare Heitkamp to a Stuka is that the Ju 87 was already obsolete by 1939; it was a slow aircraft and easily shot down by British fighters in the Battle of Britain. The RAF pilots used to say they liked nothing better than a "Stuka party," which was their 1940 version of the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot of 1944.

That marxist identity politics cancer is so toxic you can legitimately see the actual destruction of the Democratic Party.

It's infection in the media is so complete it has destroyed it's 5th Column power. The current crop are too ideologically rigid and dim and can't play the Cronkite stealth commie.

The hardcore activists (or what passes for the Dem base) are so extreme and driven they would have turned off a Soviet commissar. And they are uncontrollable by anything approaching a moderating influencer.

I just can't see a reasonable path back from where they are today without losing the entire base to a 3rd party movement. Even the Republicans seem solid by comparison, and we were grumbling about a 3rd party not that long ago.

Wonderful to see as I don't see America as being close to onboard politically as the blinders come off even with their years of the long march through the institutions and the resultan brainwashing.

districting / gerrymandering has an effect, but honestly, I don't worry too much about the house or the senate.

I don't think we'll see a wave in any direction, but I think we'll wake up the day after the election with something pretty close to the status quo, numbers wise.

403 That marxist identity politics cancer is so toxic you can legitimately see the actual destruction of the Democratic Party.

It's infection in the media is so complete it has destroyed it's 5th Column power. The current crop are too ideologically rigid and dim and can't play the Cronkite stealth commie.

I think that, paradoxically, their problem is the completeness of the Red takeover of the Democrat Party and the MSM. They so dominate both institutions that they've created their own bubble, and are now subject to the Pauline Kael effect.

Much like the Commies in Berkeley, who always used to rant in stilted Marxist cliches, many Dems don't realize how they come across to normals.

In this context I always think of a rabid feminist who complained to me how the guys in her office avoided her like the plague outside of work, and this after all she'd done to assiduously point out any and all sexism on their part.

I don't know what to think of polling anymore.

I don't distrust it like so many people, but I understand its limitations at the same time.

The generic ballot is useful, but the news that the 61 battleground states are at R+1 on average(?) cuts into the idea.

Polling is a bit broken, but I also don't want to insist that the rest of America is seeing the same thing the same way I am.

I'm inclined to think that the polls are weighted wrong, almost across the board, based on poor assumptions by polling firms, but that feels too conspiratorial for me to rely on with any strong sense.

I waver between thinking we'll have 58 seats and maintain the majority to we'll have 52 seats and barely lose the majority in the House.

441 TR made the United States a global nation.

The problem with Jefferson is that he and that Frenchman Citizen Genet and the Democrats chose party of nation in dealing with President John Adams.

Jefferson did a great job with the Declaration of Independence, but he wasn't president when he wrote it. He sucked as Governor of Virginia and ineptly allowed Benedict Arnold and the British to sack Richmond. He gave us the Louisiana Purchase, when in fact he could have taken that land because France was decimated already and couldn't defend it.

Just not a Jefferson fan.

Oh, and he had an Oedipal complex with his mommy too.

It's actually an ancient thing done by Empires to proclaim their power for all time. The Egyptian Pharaohs did it, and the Persian Rulers of Antiquity left some astoundingly huge carvings in the side of some of their mountains, that are still clearly visible today, 2500 years later.

I don't think political polling is much better than that.

For it to be statistically valid, it needs to
a: be completely randomized (near impossible to do, there's a selection bias in who answers the phone, or who agrees to do the survey, etc.)

and

b: of a significant sample size to accurately represent the population -- again almost impossible to do.

So what the pollsters do (and it's logical to do this) is to start weighing numbers -- "well, we only got 300 democrats our of 1,000 responses, we think that the population is more like 40% democrat, so we need to weight that more heavily. Except we only got 4% black women, who we suspect will make up 8% of the voters on election day, so we need to weight that..."

and eventually, you're back in "guessing" territory and pretty far from actual, you know, statistics.

And statistics is good enough, in general, when you're measuring HUGE samples and accuracy isn't as important as getting a baseline trend is.

When you're dealing with something like a political election where it might come down to 51%-49%, ... it's just not accurate enough to predict that.

495 Theory: Keeping in mind that Facebook (1) is very good at scraping data; and (2) is now clearly overtly political, one must assume that a viable "category" of user that can be identified by the platform is "self-identified sexual assault victim." Now there may not be a huge commercial market for that data (primarily therapy, one would think), BUT... for political purposes in the #metoo era, that would be regarded as very valuable for DEMOCRATIC politicos. Someone should ask Facebook whether they scraped the data and provided it to the campaign.

Posted by: Michael at October 16, 2018 04:57 PM (xv1Rh)

496 440, 447,
Several things come to mind. First, in the era of machine politics from the 1870's to 1900's, you had pretty accurate information coming out as well as voting was a public act.

A lot of states were not competitive as well at the presidential level--e.g. the solid south for dems and the midwest and new england for reps. The west and some major industrial swing states--NY, PA, OH, IL were the outliers.

Second, 447, I agree that the wheels are falling off of polling. The presidential approval rating may not be as useful as it once was with Trump either (see the shy Tory/Ed Bradley effect).

Second, most of those historical midterm models have a recession or slow recovery built into the first two years or so of a new president. Reagan lost seats in 1982, Eisenhower in 1952, Truman in 1946, Carter in 1978, Bush in 1990, Obama 2010, Clinton in 1994, Nixon in 1970, Johnson in 1966, and so forth. The switch in seats especially used to occur in the House after wave presidential elections (buyer's remorse). Political scientists use a lot of way to try to normalize a district's vote but congressional districts are simply hard and expensive to estimate accurately. The outliers were FDR (1934) and GWB (2002) who gained House seats and Kennedy who lost only one seat in 1962. Notably, each had an improving economy at the time.
